  • Alan Watts was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker known for his profound insights into Eastern philosophy, particularly Zen Buddhism, and for his ability to bridge Eastern and Western thought. Born on January 6, 1915, in Chislehurst, England, Watts showed an early interest in spirituality and philosophy. He began studying the teachings of Buddhism and Taoism at a young age, which deeply influenced his intellectual development.
Watts embarked on a lifelong journey of exploration, delving into various philosophical and spiritual traditions from around the world. He received a master's degree in theology from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Illinois, where he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. However, Watts soon became disillusioned with traditional Christianity and shifted his focus to Eastern philosophy.
Throughout his life, Watts wrote numerous books and delivered countless lectures, captivating audiences with his eloquence and wit. He became known for his ability to convey complex philosophical concepts in a clear and accessible manner, making Eastern wisdom accessible to Western audiences.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Watts gained widespread popularity through his radio broadcasts and public speaking engagements, where he discussed topics such as the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and the pursuit of happiness. He became a prominent figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s, influencing a generation of seekers and spiritual explorers.
Despite his popularity, Watts remained humble and down-to-earth, emphasizing the importance of direct experience over intellectual speculation. He encouraged individuals to embrace the present moment and to cultivate a sense of wonder and awe for the mysteries of existence.
Alan Watts passed away on November 16, 1973, but his legacy continues to resonate with people around the world. His writings and lectures continue to inspire and challenge readers to question their assumptions, explore new perspectives, and live more fully in the present moment. Alan Watts's life serves as a testament to the power of wisdom, compassion, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

Knowing some answers, WHY did he choose for YEARS to drink himself to death? Thats a reason to disbelieve his entire lifes work

An artist's self-harm does not invalidate the beauty of his work. He (I believe) would say that you are free to discard his work for whatever reason you choose, and that is simply your own opinion. I choose the view that we are fortunate that he was able to impart such a brilliant and hopeful philosophy to the world, in spite of his self-harmful behavior. By observing, suspending judgement, and accepting life with all its complexity and contradictions, we can live out his philosophy.

What's to believe or disbelieve? He entertains. His goal.

@@stutaylor2584This! Alan called himself an entertainer and talked about gurus not being what we all think they are.

Exactly! He often says it himself - that he is an entertainer, presenting different views of the world. What we do with that - take meaning from it or discard it or simply enjoy it like music, or any combination of these - is up to us.

You’re saying because someone did something you disagree with there is no value in anything they’ve done? That seems strange.
