    You mentioned the Brigadier punching The Master but another epic fan favourite scene is the Raston warrior robot massacring an entire squadron of Cybermen. Reportedly Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were disappointed they didn't get more scenes together because they enjoyed the good-natured ribbing between them so much which they re-enacted at many fan conventions. God I wish I could have met them, same with Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen and more, so many legends no longer with us. For Borusa, immortality was a curse but for all those bright and shining Doctors and companions forever preserved in this wonderful celebration of the show's legacy, it's truly a blessing.

      Nah, the Brigadier punch was far better. That fully established him as The Man Who Dared, and a clear BEST FRIEND to The TARDIS.
      After so many violations from the fiend, no wonder Zagreus chose his voice for The TARDIS.

      @@1funkyflyguy the Fourth Doctor and Romana II scenes were from Shada, a story only partially filmed due to industrial action (they did the location filming but not the studio). For years it was a near-mythical 'lost story' and the shots on the punt and of the TARDIS in the alleyway were tantalising glimpses and in a way 'original' material of Tom Baker, not clips from broadcast episodes.
      Shada has been released in several forms since, most recently with animation and even a new filmed insert with Tom Baker at the end.

    I love the 5th Doctor's horror and sadness at seeing Borusa revealed as the villain.
    He was his school teacher. A good teacher can be so inspiring to a student. The Doctor admired and looked up to Borusa. They had become friends. Then he sees him getting up to all these corrupt shenanigans. Peter Davison does such a good job of showing the Doctor's brokenheartedness.

    Originally, when producer John Nathan-Turner and screenwriter Terrance Dicks believed that Tom Baker would participate in the special, the script would be considerably different: the Fourth Doctor would be accused of being the villain and he would go to Gallifrey and unmask Borusa. Meanwhile, the First Doctor would stay in the TARDIS with Susan and Turlough and the Fifth Doctor would go with Tegan to the Tower. When Tom Baker decided not to return, the script was rewritten for the Fifth Doctor to go to Gallifrey and the First Doctor to go with Tegan to the tower.

I always forget Mike and Liz showing up, but feel so bad that Jamie and Zoe never got their memories restored (outside of the comic strip, novelizations, etc.). 2 of my personal favorite moments are the Cybermassacre and the whole 'easy as pi' exchange between The Master and The First Doctor. For many of us who first saw DW via PBS in the early 80s, this special was our first exposure to the the earlier Doctors and their companions. Shoot, For a percentage of that group, it was our introduction to Davison's Doctor as well! I mean, in my case, WFSU started airing the Tom Baker stories in august 1982 and were still in the midst of those serials when "The Five Doctors" premiered in November '83. So, yeah, it was my first time seeing Davison, Pertwee, Troughton and Hartnell (his brief scene pre credits). Eventually, the Tallahassee based PBS station got Davison and Pertwee (I can't recall if it ever got Colin and McCoy), but those two eras were a couple of years later. If I'm uncertain about WFSU's catalog, I definitely saw Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy via Georgia Public Broadcasting. Alas, neither affiliate ever ran the surviving Hartnell or Troughton episodes. GPB promised them when they ran a special fundraising broadcast of "An Unearthly Child", but it never carried through with that announcement and by 1990 or 91, upon playing 'Survival", it stopped running DW all together.

    The reaction to Mike Yates was the part I was looking forward to the most. Just because I knew there'd be a scream. :) My picks for a Doctor crossover would have to be Two and Eleven. Imagine the quirkiness!
    I agree with you about the lack of interactivity between the Doctors. It's only the last 20 minutes where they all come together. Not many characters have much to do throughout the story either. Turlough, Tegan and Sarah Jane do nothing (and Susan only pushes a Dalek at the start). I actually think the Master is a highlight because at least he gets things done. I like the story apart from that though and like you said, the Second Doctor and the Brigadier are incredible together!

    The Rastan Warrior's costume is recycled from Earthshock - painted silver over the original black. The mysterious black androids in Earthshock were plenty scary in the dark, but Keith Hodiak's acrobatic performance along with the brutal weapon SFX make it an absolute terror out in the daylight. Of course, it's (ironically) slaughtering Cybermen, which is absolutely thrilling considering how terrifying they were in Earthshock.

      JNT directed the Raston-Cyberman fight as second unit work. It's a standout moment (much as I love The Five Doctors, the direction can be a little stagey, like Sarah's fall, or inexplicable like the Cybermen somehow not spotting Tegan and the First Doctor).

It had all been carefully planned to happen at once on the 23rd (the actual anniversary), but then some bigwig at the BBC decided they should make "The Five Doctors" part of that year's Children in Need telethon, on the 25th. It probably helped boost viewing figures for both shows/events, but some of us couldn't resist spoiling ourselves by reading the whole book on the day it came out. =:o}

The classic era may not look as slick as the CG and VFX ridden show of today but with great actors and writers, it shows how it can pull you into its world. Something that the biggest budgets can’t seem to manage on TV these days

    When this aired in the US in the '80s, it was the first time many Americans saw not only scenes of Shada, but also Troughton and Pertwee! One tidbit: Writer Terrance Dicks had said that if Tom Baker HAD said yes to appearing, it would have been the FOURTH Doctor who ends up interacting with the High Council and confronting Borusa, which would have been more impactful since we'd seen Four and Borusa interacting in two different Gallfirey stories. In that scenario, the First and Fifth Doctors would have gone together to the Tower. Also, for the Brig's epic punchout of the Master, check out the Third Doctor doing a "Haiyaa!" kick to disarm him at the same time! Great stuff, and a great reaction. Thank you!

      @Epsilon1Zeta 2 місяці тому +1

      Yes I remember Terrance Dicks saying that he thought that of all the Five Doctors, Tom Baker's version was the one that had the possibility of a dark side to his character and it would have been something to see him interact with Borusa.

    Doctor Who trivia: Patrick Troughton' grandson played Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter. Peter Davidson's daughter is triply linked to the series: via 1. her father, 2. she's married to David Tennant and 3. she (Georgina Moffat) appeared as the 'doctor's daughter' the episode of the same name.

    I stumbled upon your reaction to this story and was captivated by the joy you experienced and so watched the whole video! I am in my 60's now, and remember watching this story on its first broadcast. In fact my earliest TV memories are of Troughton cowering under the platform in Web of Fear. In my twenties I became co-ordinator of the UK Dr Who Appreciation Society so was blessed to get to know some of the stars personally, like Jon P, Frazer, Wendy, Liz Sladen, Lou Jameson, and many more. I became an actor and was fortunate to be a supporting artist in The Caves of Androzani and The Twin Dilemma, stories considered to be the very best and very worst! I shall watch with interest to see what you think of Caves...! I since worked on over 40 Big Finish stories, working with Peter, Colin and Sylvester, especially the Gallifrey series where I worked regularly with Lalla, Lou, Jon Leeson, and Carole Anne Ford and Mary Tamm on a couple of episodes.
    Your amazement and thrill of watching the classic stories is delight, and it warms the heart to see that this clunky old Tv show can still touch and enthrall new viewers. All the best to you, Steven Wickham

    According to script writer Terrance Dicks, in the original script, the 4th Doctor was supposed to be the one who went to Gallifrey and discovered the president's betrayal. Also, originally, Jo Grant was to be with the 3rd Doctor, but she was unavailable and Sarah Jane was supposed to be with the 4th Doctor. So, they teamed her up with the 3rd Doctor when Tom Baker turned it down. The footage of the 4th Doctor is from "Shada", which at the time was unfinished and the footage hadn't been seen yet. I think Victoria was also supposed to have been with the 2nd Doctor, but she also was unavailable, which is why he was paired with the Brigadier.
    There's also a special edition of this story with cleaned up effects and is about 20 minutes longer. I think it's actually better.

    • @jcortese3300
      @jcortese3300 2 місяці тому

      I wish they had gotten Jo -- she'd have ziplined with no complaints, that's for sure. And I think the whole continuity business with Jamie and Zoe came up because they were originally going to have Victoria call the Brig "Brigadier," despite him being a Colonel when she knew him. So they had to come up with another "slip up" that would reveal the illusion to the Second Doctor.

    I do say Seska given that in the original script had Tom Baker, been in it his Doctor would have been stopped by the Master and then the Cybermen would have tried to capture them the Master would have been knocked out by the blast of a Cybergun and the 4th Doctor stolen the Masters teleport device to escape to Gallifrey and expose the villain. It was also in one draft Sarah Jane gets menaced by an army of Autons, and the 3rd Doctor drives up in Bessie and says get in Sarah Jane to escape the Autons.

    So, at this time, Frazier Hines was in the middle of a 22-year run on EMMERDALE, a British soap opera. They originally wanted him to be the companion to the 2nd Doctor but he was unavailable as he had this other TV show. So, John Nathan-Turner told him to contact him if he had a day off. While blocking out his next run of shooting, Frazier found had a free day, contacted JNT, who in turn wrote the scene where the 2nd Doctor encounters Jamie and Zoe.

    I first viewed Who on PBS, scheduled at when "dinner" would be in my family - episodes of Tom Baker, then an episode of Monty Python in 1981. Random, as when dinner was ready. I was 12 years. A few years later in 1985, my local PBS started WHO in "movie format", all edited together, on Saturday nights. As I was a quiet Geek teen, who was not dating or partying -yet! -and when had a video recorder, I went through Tom Baker. PBS showed "The Five Doctors" as a Xmas special, after "Creature from the Pit".....Peter's Doctor would start in Feb'1986, through the summer. Even on family vacation, I could program our video for a story or two. PBS received the remains of the Sixties stories that summer (17 Hartnell, 5 Troughton) which were amazing. Then Pertwee (1/4 were in monochrome then -recovered)-then as started College in 1987, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy - it took until 1991 to see all that was. Video's were released, started buying, as they were without PBS pledge-breaks, restoration of film, colorized Pertwee. I had read a number of the Target novel adaptions, and some stories one never thought could be experienced. Now, with more episodes recovered, animations - would be fun to do my own marathon, when time allows. Glad to watch reactions, like you Jess, and other to discover these stories. I'm 55 years now - delight in seeing other fans enjoy!!!!

    We were used to the screams in 'The Three Doctors' - which is where that 2 and 3 dynamic starts out. And that was a story, of course, on which the writer of this special acted as script-editor. Which is the point really. They needed someone well versed in the show to that point and he delivered. Yes, the whole thing with Borusa (who was initially going to be confronted by Tom's Doctor - before he finally elected to drop out of the project) gives off Palpatine vibes. But why not? This was, after all, the year when Ian McDairmid made his debut as the Emperor in 'Return of the Jedi'. Twin mythologies for the times.

    Y'know, I found your channel originally through your reactions to the 9th and 10th Doctor's episodes. I know you weren't the biggest fan of those eras, but honestly, after watching all of the Classic series, it might be a fun idea to redo those reactions, or at least to a handful of the episodes, now that you have all this hindsight knowledge.
    When you watch 'School Reunion' and see the 10th Doctor meet Sarah-Jane Smith, it hits SO much harder when you've seen her older episodes with the 3rd and 4th Doctors. Similarly, the Doctor's fear at seeing old enemies again (Daleks, Cybermen, the Master, etc) hit harder too, and the brief times the Doctor mentions having a family in the past.
    You've already seen the episodes, sure, but it'd be fun to see you go through them again with the the aforementioned hindsight and notice all the little things and subtle nods you may have not caught before.

    #TheFiveDoctors is my all-time favorite #ClassicWho story and will forever be in my Top 10 overall!!! Episode Trivia: We in America got to see this a few days before the folks in Britain did! The Beeb knew they had a moneymaker to distribute!
    In New Jersey we watched "Whovies" every Saturday night on the local PBS station. (The local Whovian club answered the phones come pledge time and the station even went to England to do Who documentaries! Look up "Doctor Who In America" and find about the now-defunct New Jersey Network. Also check UA-cam under "New Jersey Network" and "Doctor Who"; I think one of the docs is here!) Baker had not yet regenerated in Northern New Jersey, so this was our first taste of Davison. Me and my high school Whovian buddy were not impressed with Five because, at least speaking for myself, Baker was practically a superhero to us.
    I only knew about Four, Sarah Jane, Leela, Romana I and II and K9 at the time so I didn't know who these other people were at all! LOL!!! (I became a Whovian after Baker left the Brig and Harry Sullivan behind.) But I still loved this story and I knew I had seen something special. So those were the other Doctors, huh? Hmmm.....
    A couple of years later, NJN switched to Pertwee and I got to see my second favorite Classic Who story, #TheThreeDoctors!

    In Re: Classic Doctor Team Ups -- I would like to have seen 4 and any of the others, simply because (minor spoiler, but I think you've already figured this out by this point via context) he never did any Classic reunion stories. He's essentially, and correctly, considered the definitive "image" of Classic Era DW, not just in most Brits' minds but around the world (particularly in the US) when DW was show in delayed showings on PBS stations back in the 70s and 80s, so it would have been nice to have seen him in a multi-doctor story. (Even in the NuWho era when T. Baker appeared in the 50th anniversary he wasn't 4 but a future incarnation of the Doctor -- The Curator -- so it wasn't a proper team up, as such.)

    In the original draft, when they thought they might be able to get Tom to come back, he was the one who went to the Capitol and discovered Borusa was the culprit, while Doctors One and Five would have gone to the Tower together.
    Your summation of this story is spot on, it's a simple plot because it doesn't need to be more complex, the point of it is to squeeze in as many old monsters and companions as they can.
