Yes, the First Doctor lasted a really long time. He's the only one of them who started out as a child and ended up as an old man. Unlike the later Doctors, the First Doctor had a peaceful life for most of that incarnation, since he didn't leave Gallifrey until later in life after he'd had children (remember in Fear Her, when he said "I was a dad once.") and as we see with Susan, grandchildren. Every incarnation after that have all had really dangerous lives, so none of them have lived as long as the first one had.
The sonic screwdriver actually came into being in the Second Doctor's era, but by the Fifth Doctor's era, the producers started foregoing it's use and making the Doctor go without one.
And yes, the Second and Third Doctors had met before, as well as the First, in an earlier anniversary story called The Three Doctors. It was William Hartnell's last appearance as the First Doctor, and he passed away about a year or two later.
OH! And if you happen to find the anniversary version of The Five Doctors DVD, there's a hidden Easter egg commentary where David Tennant, Phil Collinson (producer) and Helen Raynor (writer and script editor) get drunk on champagne and ramble hilariously. (The part where David comments about needing some alone time as a teen when he first saw Peri in a bikini in Planet of Fire is a classic.)

I would love it I’ve only seen the first few of the first doctors stories and the 90s TV movie with the either doctor but I always wanted to watch the whole classic series but I haven’t not because it’s so old because I like old shot but it’s because there’s sooooo many episodes of the classic series and I like the revival where it’s like a villain of the week thing and every episode is a different adventure with 2 or 3 two parters per season the classic series is more like a serial and each story is usually about 4 episodes
They should elbow the modern feeble New Who shit and concentrate on proper Doctor Who!
The second doctor knew the 3rd doctor as he has met him before in the story "The three doctors"
And later in was in an episode called "The two doctors" where he met with the sixth
Elana I think that would have been a better Multi Doctor Story To react to The Chemistry between the 2nd And 3rd Doctor was Excellent and They get to see the real First Doctor
The second Doctor was the best anyway...too bad so many of his episodes are missing. (But the recreations they did so far are acceptable substitutes)
But if you want to go for an episode that has the most stuff that gets referenced in the new series you kinda had to go for the five doctors.
Or watch one good episode for each of the enemies.
Or the preferred method, just watch all of them..there are only 26 years worth of episodes :D

There was a special called the Three Doctors so yes 2 & 3 have met before.
I wouldn't really call it a special. It featured the first 3 Doctors together, but otherwise it was a regular 4-part serial at the start of season 10, about 11 months _before_ the 10th anniversary. The Five Doctors was the only episode in the classic run which wasn't part of a normal season.

Classic Doctor Who is great storytelling, it will look old of course but get immersed in the plot, it's amazing.

It's amazing how they pulled it off considering how poor the budget was back then. They really had to up their game in storytelling to make up for the poor effects at the time.
I've watched all Classic Who and this was a really fun watch. It was amazing(ly funny) seeing what folks with only a passing knowledge of Who history thought of such a continuity-heavy episode.

The Dalek's are his most feared adversaries and the Cybermen a rank below them but The Master is essentially the Joker of this show.
The Master is more of a Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock.

You guys chose one of the worst stories to review. You should do:
- Genesis of the Daleks
- City of Death
- Inferno
- The Invasion
- Robots of Death
- Talons of Weng-Chiang
- The Caves of Androzani
They're all great stories, but the 6-7 parters can be a bit challenging for the unfamiliar. Safer with the 4-parters; so City of Death, Robots of Death and Caves of Androzani are must-sees. Other good 4-parters (one from each era) would be:
- Remembrance of the Daleks
- Vengeance on Varos (2 parts, but 45 mins each)
- Earthshock
- The Brain of Morbius
- The Time Warrior
- Tomb of the Cybermen
- The War Machines
@@ftumschk I'm not sure who to reply to here. You can't do Robots of Death and Talons of Weng-Chiang unless you do Face of Evil. And Leela was the absolute best. And if these guys have seen School Reunion then they should see Invisible Enemy, Sun Makers and Invasion of Time. It has been a VERY long time since I've seen some of these but I don't remember them being all that good. I remember The Daemons being particularly good; especial with the reference to them in The Satan Pit. Of course, it's probably moot with this being an almost 3 year old video.

I grew up watching Doctor Who on Saturday Night's on PBS and Baker is still my favorite Doctor, Eric is correct this blew away anything else on TV at the time except maybe Battlestar Galactica and Greatest American Hero.
I tried to re-watch Greatest American Hero on Netflix. It hasn't held up well at all. I loved it when it came out.
The special effects and costumes are definitely dated but even now when I hear the Theme song I love it.

This episode isn't really that good, it's an anniversary story that's basically fanservice for the sake of fanservice.

I do like Pyramids of Mars quite a bit.

They need to watch The War Games. It's a pivotal checkpoint in the history of the series.
Spearhead From Space would have been a good starting point A New Doctor and it's the first time the show was in colour and it features a similar enemy
It's good for them to see the Master ahead of season 3
I reckon ‘Spearhead from Space’ would be an ideal classic story to react to. Both the story and the effects are very well done. Also the fact the it is entirely shot on location and film help to give it a more realistic and cinematic feel. Also it does the autons justice, showing then to be quite creepy and menacing as well as explaining what they are unlike in rose where they were just sort of there and seemed rather silly and gimmicky.
The Time Warrior would be better. Sontarans and Sarah's first appearence.
This is hardly representative of the classic series.... This is more like the classic version of a Christmas special. Campy, goofy....
I have seen this story dozens of times but damn, your reactions made it so hilarious to watch again. Please consider watching more classic who. I love it so much. Once you get used to the pacing its amazing. Hilarious (not always intentional) and heartbreaking. I recommend starting and sticking to one era at a time so you can get to know the doctor and the characters. I feel like such a dork cause I'm watching the discussion cause I want to over explain all of your questions. XD

Mint Dragon Because this ties in to the end of series 3 so the reveal actually means something. They will probably do Genesis of the Daleks before series 4 starts.

I would've said to start with "Spearhead from Space".
Honestly, Genesis is overrated. Power, Remembrance, and even Revelation are much better than Genesis.
I would say Terror of the Autons. That's the first story ever with the master in it and also one of the best.
The 4th doctor becomes president of galifrey (i think in the deadly assassin, which is a sole doctor story between sarah jane and lela) and he left the bad guy in charge, so them mentioning the 5th doctor being the president.
The reason the third doctor has a car is because he was banished to earth by the time lords
This episode isn't a great look at the different Doctors, the 1st Doctor is sadly replaced by another actor, who while he does his best, isn't quite Hartnell. The 5th Doctor is probably the most generic classic Doctor, if you've seen the 10th Doctor then you've seen the 5th already. And the 4th Doctor isn't really in it at all.
This episode also includes Daleks and Cybermen, but both at their worst, if you want a good Dalek story go watch Genesis of the Daleks, and if you want good Cybermen then go watch The Tenth Planet.
I would suggest a baker story, so i.e Genesis of the Daleks over The Tenth Planet as its aged like wine in comparison.

That feeling when a New Who fan tries to pass themself off as a Classic Who fan. Ouch that's cringe. How in the hell is the Fifth Doctor the most generic classic Doctor? Classic Who is predominantly built on mischievous, childish old men who act as grandfatherly figures. The Fifth Doctor is mild-mannered, sarcastic as hell and straight-laced to the point of being a killjoy. If anything he is the most unique Doctor of them all. Certainly the most unique of the Classic Series.
Though it would be true to say the he's definitely the blueprint for the New Who Doctors, in that he's portrayed more as a reckless, naive friend than a grandfatherly figure like the first four Doctors.

It's true that 5 and 10 have similarities but thats because David tennant was a fan of 5 and was inspired by his run
but saying they're essentially the same [which I'm sure the dumbass says because they're both young] is the most ignorant comment ever
To be quite honest, while I obviously don't have any problems with anyone who likes Tennant, I'm really not the biggest fan of the Tenth Doctor. He's actually my least favourite Doctor of them all. The Fifth, however, I would most definitely call my favourite.
But what I found so bizarre about the original comment is that the Fifth Doctor is about the furthest you could possibly get from the Tenth Doctor in terms of personality. As you said, Time Crash highlighted a few stylistic similarities, but that's about as far as it went. Other than those few stylistic elements, the two couldn't be any more different.
The Tenth is egotistical, the Fifth is modest. The Tenth is loud, the Fifth is quiet. The Tenth is decisive, the Fifth is dithering. The Tenth is laid back, the Fifth is uptight. The Tenth is intimate, the Fifth is impersonal. They're at completely different ends of the spectrum in terms of personality. I really think the OP is a New Who fan whose only experience of the Fifth Doctor is through Time Crash. They are absolutely nothing alike.
Firstly, the fifth and tenth Doctors are nothing alike. Secondly, Earthshock would be a much better choice of Cyberman story for them to watch

Aw, this was a lot of fun. :D Even if of course, there would have been a different reaction had you guys watched more Classic Who (and I did feel sorry for Calvin since there was no Tom Baker), this was still a lot of fun - especially the robot reaction. And their reaction to the Master (and I love that outfit!), Time Lords and the different Doctors. (And Turlough! Eric's comment when Five and Turlough was looking at the painting in the FL made me crack up.)
So while it might not have been the best episode you've watched, I think it'll serve you well in the future, and even if not, it was a ton of fun to watch. :D
13:00 the footage of Tom Baker was taken from an incomplete and unaired serial called “Shada”, from his run as The Doctor. The BBC had tried to get him to return for this episode, but he turned them down, hence his absence here.
13:25 that is true. The First Doctor was originally played by William Hartnell, who died in 1975. This episode was made in 1983, so the First Doctor had to be recast, with Richard Herndall in the role.

After seeing significant amount of the Twitch stream, I saw serials of the Fifth Doctor for the first time. With that, I finally had enough information to truly appreciate this serial. And after just watching it, I immediately came here to watch the video I've been putting off for 8 months.Guess that's a testament to how I feel about Blind Wave...
I loved you guys reacting to Classic Who! Though not my first choice of episode BUT a cool look at each of the Doctors personality-wise. (I laughed so hard at your reaction to the Raston Warrior Robot. Oh the early 80's cheese...)
I would love if you to do one these once a month to mix it up between New Who and Torchwood. Classic Who is definately a piece of work, but they have some great stories and some cool moments once in a while. (And bubble wrap is a common thing that turns up in some episodes/serials.)
Baker refused to be in it. They used unused footage from his previous episodes. He didn't want to play second fiddle to Davison
Specifically, the footage used of Tom as well as Lalla Ward as Romana 2 was from the untransmitted Douglas Adams story "Shada" at the end of season 17, the 2nd to last for Tom's 7, that was finished at the time due to a strike at the BBC. It has since been finished with animation and voice overs for unfilmed material and was released on DVD. It had only been 2 years since Baker left the show. His first appearance on TV since he regenerated was in the 50th anniversary but he has done a ton of Big Finish audio stories and continues to make them.

When they promoted this, they had all five Doctors line up for a photo. Tom Baker didn't even want to turn up for _that_, so they used a Madam Tussauds waxwork to stand in for him.
Interesting to note that they watched this right after series 2.

Remembrance has one of my fav companions beating up a Dalek with a baseball bat & is also one of the most well paced CW serials imho.

It's a fun anniversary story. It allowed the fans to get to see the original 2nd and 3rd doctor once again. Tom Baker (4th) was originally supposed to be in it, but decided to pull out of the project. Hence they used stock footage from Shada episode and provide is the reason to why he was unable to appear in the episode. I do love the 5 doctors, but that's because I've seen the first 5 classic who doctor's run. So I am familiar with the Classic Doctors and their personality and companions. To watch this without really knowing the classic who individual trait/reference does throw you off.
There was a previous 10th anniversary special "The Three Doctors" which is how the second and third recognise each other. Tom Baker didn't want to take part saying that it was too soon after his leaving. The footage used was from the incomplete unaired episode "Shada".
The scene with Tom Baker and Lalla Ward on the boat is from the unaired Shada serial. And although writer Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) never wanted it published it is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories. Especially after I had already read one of Adams' last work Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
Things to remember from this episode are:
- The Master (dude with the goatee and the black cloak).
- Rassilon the guy who started the Time lord council.
- The Doctor is now "Lord President" of the Time lords' High council.
Oh and the Brigadier and UNIT.

IN the 3 Doctors story, the 2nd Doctor met the 3rd in an adventure with Omega. So that would explain how they knew each other.

For classic Tom Baker eps I would try Fang Rock and Robots of Death.
I always think Spearhead from Space from Season 7 is a good jumping on point for weaning yourself into Classic Doctor Who. It is the first series filmed in colour, it effectively reboots the series so you don't need to know too much about the previous stories, apart from the fact the Brigadier has met the Doctor before... and its shot entirely on film, so it looks a lot more modern. Season 7 itself has a bit more of an 'adult' sensibility which keeps it in line with the modern series. Inferno, from the same season, is one of my favourite Classic Who stories of all time....
Yeah, Troughton is the best Doctor. Next time you take a side trip, watch Enemy of the World. It's one of the serials that was just recovered recently, and honestly one of the best stories in all classic Who. And it's got two Troughtons.
Man I wish Tom Baker was in this one. You should totally react to Genesis of the Daleks, it’s one of the greatest episodes of classic who.

You guys should watch genesis if the daleks, especially if you want to see the best doctor, tom baker. Or just watch the whole of that series (it's on blu ray), robot, ark in space (if you like bubble wrap you'll like this), genesis, sontaron experiment amd revenge of the cybermen.
On another note: Since this was not put in the playlist at the point where you watched this I figured that you watched The Movie also. I would kinda suggest you watch An Unearthly child at some point. Part of the following serial is lost (and still not recreated afaik) but well that just gives you the feeling of frustration all of us Whovians experience. But the vibe in that very first episode is just something that people should experience. And well it is also nice if you grasp all the references in The Day of The Doctor to the beginnings of the show. (I just realied that you saw that last year... well...)

Since you guys react to other shows I can give you a few cool bits of trivia. The 3rd Doctor (the one who was with Sarah Jane and drove the car) was played by John Pertwee. You would know his son Sean who plays Alfred on Gotham. The 5th Doctor (the one with the Celery) is played by Peter Davison he is the father in law of David Tennant who played the 10th Doctor
you should watch the 3 doctors, it will explain later. the three doctors is a 10th anniversary special where the first three doctors meet up to fight a founding father of the timelords. check it out.

Yeah, first doctor was replaced, The 3rd doctor drove a car because in his run his knowledge of time travel was removed by the time lords so he was stuck on Earth mostly.

'Bessie'. I've driven her too when I worked at The Doctor Who Experience back in 1996! The gears were terrible by the time I got to sit behind the wheel.

I watched this when it first aired on BBC one. It is a bit lame in places but I totally love it. The car is called Bessie. The third doctor is always referred to as the James Bond doctor because he drove lots of vehicles and was a sort of action man with his Venution aikido. The people walking through the tunnels were past companions.
With this, I hope we will get to see the mini episode of 5 and 10 at the end of next season.
