Dose Soundexchange Collect Royalties?
SoundExchange collects royalties for ALL sound recordings played on non-interactive digital radio. This includes recordings and soundtracks made by actors, comedians, and spoken word artists in addition to musicians.
What Is A Mechanical Royalty?
Mechanical royalties are a royalty paid to a songwriter whenever a copy of one of their songs is made. For instance, when a record label presses a CD of your song, you are due a mechanical royalty. That is the basic story, but it gets a little more complicated.
What Is Music Reports?
Music Reports (MRI) helps songwriters collect mechanical royalties in the USA. Their service allows musicians to better track and manage their music rights, licensing, and royalties.
What Is Music Publishing?
In short, music publishing is really all about songwriters and copyrights. ... A music publishing company can offer multiple services for songwriters. As a 'publishing administrator', they administer the copyright - protecting the use of songs as well as collecting royalties owed from use.

You have the most educational videos that I've come across on UA-cam, thank you for sharing music business knowledge.
This helps a lot. Thank you for taking time to explain in words that everyone can understand.
Background music is too loud and distracting my man. Content is good though

Yooo all I gotta say is My Brother, I definitely appreciate you for your the knowledge that you're giving. I already have the SoundExchange with the Spreadsheet, now I just need to do that Music Reports now. Thank You my Brother.

Dear Piff, I am in the process of releasing singles from my 50+ years of music catalog. I found your video most helpful. I clicked the "Subscribe & Like" buttons on this specific video to connect with your UA-cam Channel. I look forward to finding answers to more music-related questions as I find your advice very valuable at the stage of the game. Thank you for this informative video. Sincerely, Millard Randolph Curry.

@PIFFBEATZ Great video man! Thanks for clearing some of this up. However, do you still need to sign up for Music Reports if you already have Songtrust taking care of Mechanical Royalties? Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!
Nope if you already have Songtrust then they will collect your mechanical royalties from the HFA on your behalf.
Great Video Thanks Man!!!

VERY VERY VERY GOOD VIDEO
Good job brother
You real fam! thanks
Excellent video, thank you! I'm a newbie. I just submitted 3 songs via soundexchange direct. Am I done, or do I have to go to Associated Recordings and check boxes next to my songs? I don't understand how the the two processes relate to each other. Thanks again!
Hello thanks for the great info. Let’s say you have another artist featured on your record and you guys are splitting the royalty on Distrokid. For sound exchange do you out that same percentage when ask you about percentage?
Thank you so much
TY bro. Is Music Reports the same as MLC???
I appreciate the Bag Lesson
Thanks bro
💯💯💯
This need more views
Hey Piff, video was very informative, I have more questions can you help??
Hello... Man.. please can you explain what you insert on the information part.. your artist name or the name name on the ID?
Helpful
Thank you
Hi, can you show us how you actually make claims in soundexchange?? When I search for my band and recordings in the claim panel, nothing shows up, even though they are definitely on spotify! Do you have to submit sound recordings and then claim them?
Songtrust can now collect what BMI/ASCAP /Soundexchange is doing all in one. Any thoughts?
Thanks
💯💯
Man I feel so dumb, I'm trying to work all this stuff out and it just feels like a mountain. Where to even start.
bro thanks
🙏🏼
❤
Under Solo Artists Name do you put your real name or your stage name?
So is Bmi a publisher or songtrust
Because when filing the music reports form they ask these questions
Question: If you have featured singers but you'd rather not pay them royalties, can you pay them upfront with a work for hire agreement, and then say in SoundExchange that there's no featured singer(even though there is one technically), but you paid them upfront and signed an agreement that they wouldn't receive royalties? Is that ok?
💯
Hi Piff, Thanks for the Very Helpful Video! I have a few questions regarding signing up for "Music Reports" On the first page there where is says "Company Name" and "Society" does that refer to my PRO(SOCAN) and if not and I don't have my own incorporated company can I just leave those blank? and for "Role" should I put 'Artist' ? I hope to hear from you so I can go forward with this. Thanks Man!
Thank you for this Video but what if I have my owner Record Label how do register it on Soundexchange and what percentage will I fill 50% or 100%?
Do you have to show proof of copyright in order to start receiving the payments from soundexchange and music reports
How long does it take for you to get the soundexchange direct link? I’m still having trouble n this my second time trying to make an account
This is key right here
Yes❤️❤️❤️❤️
what is that void check i gotta submit a picture of it for sound exchange?
Full of key info.
Sup bro I signed up for sound exchange like 4 months ago but haven’t got word back does it take long?
Hey great really video. it help mea lot! However this website you shaw later (Music Reports) it is something like Songtrust? so if i have songtrust i dont need that right? I now saw you mention soundexchange and music reports is the same things im confused whats the point of registering to both? You have my thumbs up!
Thanks
Ronni Zag great question!! So songtrust is like the CDbaby of publishing. There great!! The collect all of your publishing royalties including mechanical (Music Reports) for a small fee I believe %15. I highly recommend them for anyone, but if you were a super Indie artist and wanted to do everything yourself (I don’t Recommend) or if you like to self publish your own work then you would have to Manuel signup for all of these different services in order to collect all of your money. And Soundexchange and Music Reports are the same but very different. They both collect royalties on your behalf for the music you created but Music Reports collects your Mechanical Royalties (Reproduction of your song, Downloads, Etc) where Soundexchange collects your non interactive royalties (Streaming where you can’t choose your next song [Pandora, Sirius XM, Spotify Free, etc) Hope that helps.
@@PiffBeatzHey thanks for your detailed explanation. Actually i definately go with songtrust i dont want to huslte and do everything on my own. Now makes sence about what is the job of music reports but here there is another question rising from that. We said Music Reports collects your Mechanical Royalties (Reproduction of your song, Downloads, Etc) , arent downloads covered from distrokid for example? and the reproduction of my song covered from my PRO? with that said we should registered with sound exchange and music reports and pro and distrokid then?
@@ronnizag he doesn’t kno does he lol
Is this only for songs??? Or you can earn money from your beats??
im tryna get my royalties from a song i produced, but it wants me to put in the album that its on, including the UPC number which i cant find. Also, there was no negotiaion about how many points i get, so i cant submit it... The label ignores me so what do i do know? songtrust wise im getting 33%
if you miss clicked something at the beginning. Can you change it afterwards?
I am an artist under a record label, do I register as a performer or sound recording owner?
I just joined ASCAP, that was $50. Is there a membership fee for Soundexchange?
i only have 176,000 plays on spotify but only a 3 songs that have over 20-30k streams.. is it even worth the time of registering my works right now? so far i have been collecting minor payments from my distributor. at what point do i need to make sure im signed up for BMI, song trust, and sound exchange?
should you opt out of "membership"?
What is the difference between sound recording owner and a copy right owner. I’m a little confused. I need help.
You’re video is very helpful. Thanks you. Question: Since I’m a member and registered my songs with ASCAP as both writer and publisher, and registered with SoundExchange, and the US Copyright office, is there any need to use or pay for a Publisher Administrator? My songs will be released next month using TuneCore Digital Distributor. My next registration will be with either SongTrust or Music Reports. TuneCore offers Publishing Administration for $75. Not sure if that’s wasted money and a redundant service with everything I have set up so far. Thanks.
Please how can I sign the electric signature on my
Whats the difference between Songtrust and Soundexchange?
If you collab do you chose register for someone else
I'm in high school doing music as a fun side hustle and I need to know Urgently if getting publishers like bmi and getting sound exchange are really worth it or will I just be good on CD baby
The answer is, you need it all or there is money being left on the table that you would never know about.
@@MDNGHTDRV i didn't see this comment on time but thanks
Hi great video. This may sound stupid, but how does the electronic signature work? Apparently it is a textbox, so should I just write my name on it?
Yep it works you should be okay
@@chasemoney1924 Thank you very much. God Bless!
Hi ! Can anyone from other country other than the US can register for this? Thanks
Can you stilljoin without having your music copyrighted?
Does it apply to UA-cam too
Do u know, if u have money from soundexchange, would it show up in your account before its paid out to u? Like if they found money but u dont have a direct deposit setup? Also do u know some of the best places your music can be played at that soundexchange collects from? Thanks!
Yea, they should hold your money until you come to collect. And they have fast customer service.
@@PiffBeatz Well i just logged into my SoundExchange now and noticed a few things have changed. Signed up and did few registrations ignorantly and might need to update them. But i think what Spiritual was asking is if any earnings are displayed on the SoundExchange profile just like Distrokid usually post all earnings from streams. I have most of my audience on pandora radio and might wanna reach out to SoundExchange to see if they have anything for me.
@@PiffBeatz what if you own some of the beats but not all do you still sign up as both artist/recording owner or just as an artist?
can't actually log in because there IS NO SCREEN WHERE YOU ENTER YOUR PASSWORD ONLY EMAIL :(((((
Please which name should I use to register, is it my artist name or real name(legal name)
If someone had claimed my recording would Sexchange tell me when I go to register it?
lol😅
how do I register as a producer ?
You didn't have to upload a voided check???
