  • I'm just going to stand here, smoking and staring at you, without giving any indication of how long I've been watching you sleep.

Watson: What is it, a fire?!?!?!?

"Cute-weird" is definitely the best way to describe it. And I wonder how long he was standing there watching before he said anything... XD

Calling sherlock holmes a creeper gotta be the most weird thing ever, he's just caring for his friend trying his best not to disturb and wake him inappropriately , in his mind solving the crimes is the first and foremost important thing! Alas nothing creepy

The most sexiest Sherlock Holmes ever: Jeremy Brett.

I love the way he stares! Almost Voyeuristic! Not that I particularly support the idea of the Watson/Holmes sexual chemistry, but I would have LOVED to be inside Holmes's great mind during this scene!

If it really had been a fire, Holmes would have just slung Watson over his shoulder and carried him out, the same way he did with the poor Paul Katrides in The Greek Interpreter out of that room with the sulfur gas. (Just how strong is he anyway? I mean, we later see him unbend a steel firepoker, which actually takes considerably more effort to do than to just bend it)

What the heck, my brother does this to me all the time. He talks to me while I'm sleeping and I wake up like Watson like "what the hell?" My eyes are closed, by breathing is slow and even, what makes you think I'm conscious, you boob? "Is it a fire?" Don't wake me up unless it has almost blocked out the exits. Even then, I'll take my chances.

For those, who think this is somehow "not heterosexual" you must be very privileged. This scene has nothing to do with sexuality. Think back in history: even as late as in the 1920s and 1930s a family of 9 had to live in a single room of 20 squere meters. It was due to economic:poor family could not afford to live anywhere else even thought the parents worked. In that situation, the children had to share bed together. Nothing weird about that. And even now adays, for example college students, who live in student housing, sometimes gave to share a room, so that two same sex student share a room together. In hospitals up to 4 patients of same sex share a room together simply because there is no space for single rooms for everyone. It is economic and save space. It is also question of culture, in my culture it is normal to go to Sauna together with same sex people. Naked. Nothing sexual. However, if one is not used to this kind of culture, he/she may be shoked. However, we have done this centuries for hygenic reasons.
So, what is happening in that scene between the two men: they simply trust one another. They have worked together to catch the criminals-a job that is highly dangerous-trust is utmost important. Without trust they could not survive. They truly are best friends.

People are not calling this gay because of 2 dudes sleeping in the same room. They’re calling it gay because of Holmes staring at a sleeping Watson until waking him up. Holmes and Watson DID NOT sleep in the same room together. They were middle class not poor and rented a flat together but they had their own separate bedrooms. Watson’s is upstairs (ACD’s short stories often make note of the 17 steps up to Watson’s room) while Holmes’s bedroom is on the same floor as their living space. In this scene, Holmes goes to Watson’s bedroom and stares at a sleeping Watson until he wakes up on his own. People are calling it gay because Holmes chooses to do that instead of just physically waking up Watson.

I think people are referring to the physical chemistry the actors have

Jeremy Brett was brilliant, but just a little tiny bit camp. It doesn't spoil his Holmes, but it does make you wonder what he & Watson got up to off-camera

Sherlock Holmes was described like that in the book. Jeremy Brett just played him like that. You need to blame Sherlock Holmes for that, or better: Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes was also a drug addict and Jeremy Brett has also played that part well, but it doesn’t mean that Jeremy Brett injected an opium in his arm every day in real life, too. You need to separate the character and the actor here. Sherlock Holmes was a creep. I think Jeremy Brett did the best job here, the other Sherlock Holmes actors were not nearly that good. Jeremy Brett was bisexual, but I think that Sherlock Holmes was asexual. Arthur Conan Doyle didn’t tell somewhere that Sherlock Holmes had a real sex relationship with someone. He also respected Irene Adler a lot, after she had beaten him. Sherlock Holmes was only beaten four times. But as far as I can see, he never tried to get in touch with her afterwards again. Jeremy Brett also played on Love Boat and some other films where he showed a completely other version of himself, e.g. where he kissed women. That would have been quite unusual for Sherlock Holmes. Btw, it reminds me that scene in Star Trek somehow, too: ua-cam.com/video/E-FCYtxfDMw/v-deo.html - it was equally funny and weird at the same time.

Described in the books as what? Camp? Bisexual? That would’ve made Conan Doyle’s work very difficult to publish in Victorian and Edwardian England, I suspect, unless done with immense subtlety. So subtle that it isn’t really being “described”.
But the beauty with dramatising books is that there is no single unambiguous pathway to how to play a part or re-work it for on screen story-telling.The scope for interpretation is always present, no matter how tightly the character is written and how precisely described. Such is human nature and such is life. This is the same reason why there is no single and unanimously agreed-upon opinion here about who played Holmes best.
Even if ACD were alive today and able to comment on all the on-screen performances there have ever been, it would not automatically be the case that the majority of viewers would agree with him, or that his view was the correct one, or that anyone who disagreed with that was a less authentic Holmes fan.

Ah.... Lucky you Watson. A dressed-in-suit Jeremy Brett to wake you up. It must be something indeed to open your eyes, only to see a handsome face staring at you, first thing in the morning. That said, I'm totally astonished by others who find some meaning in him waking his friend up. You guys push the limit sometimes.

@l0neghost - thumbs up to that. While I believe I understand Mikisnas' intention in their comment, I think perhaps another word could be used in place of 'rape'. As a aside, I am shocked how many people want Holmes and Watson to get together, as it were.
