- Another day, another project... but this is a small one. We shall tidy this old girl up, add a couple of cylinders and have a nice quiet cruiser. There's a few other jobs ahead of it, but in any case, please enjoy!
I have had many ZK `s funniest one i purchased was from a small asian lady that had blocks of wood on the brake pedal so she could reach it she was like 4 foot 6 in high heals ,, but the car was spotless only 56000 Ks everything worked even the aircon
Great Vid Peter ,

Does it keep you happy? Don’t stress what others think
That is the ideal thought but people post things on UA-cam to get gratification from other people liking what they do, point being that if a person doesn’t care what other think about it they more than likely won’t be posting it on social media.
@@aural_supremacy if you actually knew Peter you would know that everything you just said was false. Peter does it for a few reasons, none of which are self promotion or gratification. Peter is just a car guy sharing his passion
Hey Peter, Congrats on the Fairlane. I love these kind of shabby-mini resto jobs. I have no doubt you'll make it look like a gem.
It's the closest thing we're going to see to an XD/XE V8 conversion too. I do look forward to joining you on this journey.
It'll be a good refresher too, watching how you tackle the engine and gearbox wiring looms to suit.
I have some great memories of the old ZJ and ZK, but the ZK was that little bit nicer and the 302 will be just so sweet.
Keep the content coming. I enjoy everything you do.
Love, peace and joy to you and your family mate.
Regards
Tony
Always liked the look of that era of Fairlane, before Ford started using the same front and rear design as the LTD. The firewall looks good on it, seen a lot of the XD-XFs rust there
Very cool Peter. As I mentioned before, I have a blue V8 ZK. Great cars. Yours has ZD hubcaps (ZC was quite different whereas the ZD ones are copied off the Lincoln and were used on 1970 Mercury Montegos). The decal on the back is “Ford Australia - We’re Moving with you”. Like mine, yours also has the LTD louvres in the sixth windows. They were available as accessories. The ZK had the new grille, tail lights, Watts Link rear suspension and the woodgrain on the dash versus the ZJ. It also had the soft feel centre console trim and the diagonal trim. If you know where I can get that trim in blue I need a small piece for my driver’s side bolster - the rest is mint. The ZK also had the new steering wheel with the offset spokes. The front door speakers are correct Ford fitment. The colour of yours was used on the brochure and also on the TV commercial. I hope you enjoyed all of that useless information 😊.
Well done Peter!! Glad the Map light has a fitting home to go to. I really like that colour and interior combo, good to see the woodgrain is in tact too. My brother and I had a ZJ twenty years ago that we converted to XF EFI. Looking forward to your adventures with it, have fun 👍👍
The gas fitters would have removed the headrests when fitting the tank, and fitted the spacer rings to lift the speakers, as the magnets hang too low at hit the tank. I’ve had a few of these over the years (2x FC LTDs, 1 each ZJ, ZK & ZL, most converted to gas) and found they either did it properly, or cut corners and thumped the speakers up with a hammer, and ground off the threads from the headrest studs to clear the tank.
My in-laws had a ZK from new, and the trims from the bonnet and over the headlights extended all the way down the sides. I never really liked that on most ZKs, but on theirs it separated the 2 colours (it was a 2 tone sportsman, carby 6) and it suited it.
I put the ULP EFI 4.1 from an 87 ZL into the ZK - it made a huge difference. These days it would be ripe for a Barra swap, but back in the mid 90s we didn’t have those options.
I might be a Holden fan, but I quite like Aussie fords too (and drive one daily). I have a soft spot for the “Blackwood boxes” from the 80s. This transformation will be great.
Thanks mate and thanks for the info on the gasfitters, speaker spacers and rear headrests; I had no idea. I'll now try to find a set of rear headrests and see how we go, cheers.
This is going to be a great restoration- really like this model Ford - and I’m a Holden guy
Classic with some of the old fashioned plastic!
I've always liked the ZK. I find those headlights that look like dual round lights but are actually square, very unique.
I was a bit disappointed there was no power windows. Someone on our neighbourhood bought a white one brand new to replace a white VE Valiant. It had the Bosch J-tronic EFI six with that stunning polished inlet manifold.
No PW on it either though. Great memories riding in it. It was so silent.
First time I've seen any Fairlane of that body shape with a carby six. I had heard they existed though.
As soon as you said Gas is for BBQ's you got a new sub mate. Love car resto videos, especially Australian ones, there's some real hidden gems out there that deserve some TLC 👍🏼🇦🇺
What a whacky steering wheel spoke design. The front end looks like an early 80’s USA spec Datsun 810/Maxima/Bluebird. Love the light green color
Well, in these days when we're all being told we need to go 'green', it looks like your ahead of the game Pete, with two green cars in the drive now...
Dam have to change my top 5 Peter Anderson car's now😊 . Love the colour can't wait to see you fix her up. Don't worry about what other people think sir you do you. But get an 1800 land 🦀 crab. Not much on UA-cam about that great car.
I personally think the ZJ to ZL have great looking dashboards
I recall during my time in primary school, one of the teachers arrived with a brand new one of these in white. She held onto it for numerous years, and I frequently spotted it in Essendon and it was always in immaculate condition. I often wondered about where the car ended up.
I'll be watching this when I go on the treadmill, I always look forward to your clips.
Yeah it looks pretty clean or what you say as tidy. Looks like a Fairmont to me. You made me laugh when you said I hope it doesn't jump into drive. Ah memories. Good video. Happy Motoring.
Yes, I worked at a couple of Ford dealerships and saw a couple of cars jam themselves under work benches while being revved... fortunately in both occasions the tech was standing to the side, very dangerous. Fairmont and Fairlane trim is very similar, The Fairlane is a longer wheelbase, cheers.
Two videos in one week, how could anyone be upset. I don’t mind you buying more cars as it means more content from you.
Mate I wish there was more people like you I love how you don't swear your fuckin fantastic and I love how your so thoroughly good with your work
Thanks mate, actually I did somewhere in this video I think, but no normally never haha, cheers.
My uncle had a late(November build) 1983 ZK in white with the 6 cylinder EFI, it had a blue interior, power windows, and a non premium sound system(an aftermarket Sanyo head unit). He had it from 1995 to circa 1999 and traded on a TF Magna. I remember the nice soft plush seats and the retro push button boot release. It looked good in the golf club carpark when he played his weekend Donald Trump style game of golf.
Love the colour Peter and the trim My wife and I had a ZK brown with the cream velour trim 302 auto one of the best cars I had we kept it bog standard except for 7in chrome 12 slotters
The ZK looks like a good place to start from. I cant wait wait to see you get started.
Like you Peter, those things are etched into my memory from when I was a kid. A family friend was the GM of fleet vehicles at Ford and would turnover cars every few months, including a string of ZK Fairlanes and LTDs. Been looking for one myself but garage currently too short so the WQ Fiesta XR4 will have to do for now. Looking forward to watching how it progresses.
A friend of mine had a later model Fairlane. Maybe 87... and I remember it had ash trays in every door. And in the centre.
Hi there! Nice Fairlane project! Not bad for 400000 kms. I think there are zero of these here in Finland, never seen anyways. It will be awesome with that 302!
Don´t worry about buying a new project. I just sold one finished and bought one for me and 2 more with my son........ All Fords.
Great find Peter
Be a nice car with the 4.9 in it
My dad purchased a new ZJ in 81 Great cars
Thanks Michael, They're a bit "plasticy" but built on a solid foundation and very reliable, I'm stoked with it, cheers.
Same colour as mine. Nice find!!! 🎉
I'm actually looking forward to what you do with this one!
2 videos in a week's tone? YOU MAD MAN!! LOL
So good to see you Peter. Was worried for you there for a bit.
I'm glad you are still buying cars. Means the passion is still alive in ya!!
I'm currently trying to get my new shed squared away and I've got 3 cats that need working on of MONE and several more for family and friends!!
God bless you my friend!! Peace and love from Michigan!!
Brian
Such a pleasure to hear from you Brian! Your support is so well appreciated, take care buddy, cheers.
Great purchase, always loved the look of the ZJ / ZK Fairlanes front etc they are a great car, I own a 81 FC LTD 4.1 and love the simplicity and reliability of those donks!
I couldn't agree more... I just have this little 302 which needs a new home... you know the rest of the story.
Magnificent as always 👍
Hi Peter from Hamilton New Zealand keep the good work up bro
What a good score fu%& she is a clean old girl very honest well done 👍👌
Hi Peter, I have some doors and maybe a few bits here in Ballarat you are welcome to if you're interested.
I have a ZJ 302c so I love seeing your new ZK on your channel
Love the shape of these Fairlanes. Love the colour and trim combo. These slightly lowered look very neat. Cool cruiser
Glad you like it, cheers
"I feel I paid too much for this". I know the feeling mate, I picked up an 83 ZK back in 2021 peak covid times/prices. Was desperate for a project so just bit the bullet. Falcons of the same condition were 5 to 10k more than my budget at the time. Let me know if your interested and I'll share a few photos and what I paid, maybe we can both feel a little better about our purchases 😂! Looking forward to the build. cheers.
re seat covers, ive seen before with velour you remove the cover and soak it in water that has a few bottles of hair conditioner in it and leave it for a few days. never tried it myself though.
Awesome mate love it
Glad you enjoyed it mate!!
The Fairlane looks good and mostly complete, I just think it's reached that age where everything on it is tired and needs restored or refurbished if it's going to live on as a driveable car. I don't see the need to keep it original so putting the 302 in it would be better. I'll be excited to see the XC finished. I think you'll be happy to acquire a country property at some point, even if you don't live there full time for a while, having a extra space to do what you want is so much more enjoyable.
My first boss Laburnum butchers had 1 of these, his wife used to take me out in it doing deliveries , don't remember much about the car but she would always wear a short skirt on those days.
I cannot wait for more zk fairlane vids!
Great to hear what you are doing and your plans and new car!! :)
You’ll have more cars than Kevin Dennis soon! LOL. She’s a beaut, as HubNut would say “a car for wafting along in”.
Thanks! And yes, it will be a 'wafter' I'll keep it silent... too many noisy V8's here haha, cheers and thanks!
It looks very good and the styling is wonderfully 80s. Looking forward to all your projects. 😊
Great to see you do another Fairlaine, hope this one, if you decide to sell, makes more dollars than the last one.
This one really has me interested!!! 😎
Keep ‘em coming!
Well worth a tidy up. A bit of rust but nothing to get despondent about.
I Had one same colour Pete slow 6 cyl on gas, good cruiser .
I am speechless
You should know him by now. I unsubbed 18 months ago bc of the never ending XC resto. Have a sticky beak every 6 months or so to see where he's at and it's the usual shenanigans. Nothing finished, nothing done on the XC and another distracting toy in the driveway lol. His perogative but it's also my perogative to invest my time in other channels instead.
who's a naughty boy then eh? Looking forward to seeing the work on this one too 👍
Nice work, Peter! I'm really keen to see the progress on this one. Sounds vaguely similar to the 4.0 in my EB II, but with that unmistakeable carby sound.
Yes they do have their own sound, good engines
I have a new old stock plate for the electric windows with all the lettering. My ZK v8 was stolen before fitting. Looks like you haven't got electric windows yet, bugger, I'll donate it if you fit electric windows and can get the center console, etc.. I also have the factory service manuals for the ZK (two thick pink'ish books), will loan but want them back. If its a 6 and you want an 8 the front springs and metal bolt in engine mounts at the main change. You need a long fan shield or run electric fan. The fuel pipe in the 6 comes into the engine bay behind the shock tower, the 8 it's in front. The steel fuel pipe has a soft pipe under the A pillar where the pipe can be changed. C4, FMX and Borg Warner auto all have the mount hole in the chassis, move the screws, same cross member works. The borg warner T bar and the C4 T bar go different sides so it was easier to change the T bar as a unit. You probably can't get the plastic speedo drive cogs any more but the factory manual gives the colour to go with the combo of diff ratio and auto box type so the speedo reads correctly,. The same electric speedo sender fits BW and C4. And the C4 case and bell housing for the 6 and 8 are different. I have a C4 to fit a Clevo which has sat for too many years, would need a rebuild and torque converter. Try getting a v8 tacho dash will be mission impossible now days. Have fun. I did one in the 90's when new stock was still available but you've got a challenge so good luck. Getting a bracket for the that power steering pump on a clevo was hard. Can make the mounts to sit the AC pump (mine looked like a different model to yours) on a Clevo AC pump platform. From memory the tail shaft fit but my spare C4 has a yoke on it which may have been the only change on the tail shaft. Not sure if I have any other bits which could help. I'm Qld based now but happy for a message. This brings back some good memories, until the bad when some a-hole stole my car.
G'day awesome one of my dream cars
Did my time on these back in the lantern motors dayz as cabbs we did everything to em
As you said they will never be as expensive as a falcon. 2 years ago I was looking for a bonnet and guards for my XE van the local Ford wreckers wanted $1800. I bought a primo deceased Doctors😮 estate ZL LTD with only a 50c rust hole at the base of the rear window for $800. Cut out the headlight brackets, ripped off the bonnet and guards for the van and wrecked the rest fo a grand. Looking back now I should of done it up and saved for parts for the van.
It will look awesome Peter if you out the original hub caps on especially lowered! Lookong forward to seeing this one come back to life.
I was actually looking for some good originals too.
@@PeterAndersons I'll keep an eye out and if anything comes past my way, I'll let you know.
nice find matey got to love an old ford. it strikes me how hideous that steering wheel is though lol
Yes the steering wheel is a bit of a weird thing, but it's very indicative alternative 80's styling. The first time I saw one as a kid I thought it was stupid haha.
a diamond in the rough. I may have a few zk fairlane bits left if ya need bits let me know and I'll see what's left.
Brilliant thanks, Any of the cream coloured lower dash trims? Cheers.
irrerlevant what others think, your dosh, your car. if you wanted to put a slant 6 into an A9X then more power to you - there's a thought :)
Smashing looking brew. 👍Cars not bad either Peter.
Yes mate I am fussy with my tea... it must be strong!
Hi Pete, if you wanted another ZJ there is a red one on marketplace at the moment. Looks rougher than yours, but it's an original 302 and 1 owner. Currently $5k (marked down already)
Looks as though the rear headrests have been removed, going by the holes left in the rear parcel tray. if you decide to save that LH front door I have that inner corner rust cut. My XE Ghia i'm still rebuilding has 417K km on it, this ZK is not too bad overall, perfect candidate for the big block. the more you dig the more you will find. the hub caps you could sell as large dog food bowls. 😂
Hey Peter just a thought, with the v8 conversion look into an electric power steer unit off an Astra, just to change it up a bit, i have one on my XE and i fabricated a bracket to fit behind passenger shock tower but you can buy mounts for them now. They are a great conversion and using original hardware too.
I didn't know about these conversions, so thanks very much for pointing me in that direction. I watched a guy doing Project XB with one fitted and his explanations regarding the fitting and time delay relay were brilliant. The Fairlane already has power steering and uses a Saginaw pump, so it's easy to transfer to a V8, but if the pump has a leak or needs new lines, I'll keep it in mind. Cheers and thanks again.
I remember that we hated these boxy things, not they're old and rare.
Peter. Been a while. Glad you joined the Fairlane club as well. Toss in a 302 and then some slots with 50's and you are in business. What is this air conditioning you keep describing? Where is the GT250? I am building a hotter 302 for my Fairlane and building the T350 motor again to try and solve issues. Check in anytime.
Hey Andy, so nice to hear from you! The car has AC but I'm not sure if it works, plus its on the other side of the engine being a six. So I need to de-gas it and get other lines etc etc. T250 is here and dirty as hell, need to ride it! I saw your email too, we'll definitely catch up. Best wishes to you and your family, cheers buddy.
if you looking for a nice tone horn for a big car the London Taxi TX4 is two separate high and low horns, really nice note, would fit the size and stature of a luxury car, the ones before it were rubbish.
soon as i heard them when we had the first one in the body shop in uk, i said " i want those on my car"
Great score. Jealous to say the least.
Early non EFI ZK without the rear head rests so 1982. Most ZJ and ZK Fairlanes had 1970's hubcaps which didn't really suit the shape of the car. The alloy wheels looked much better.
Cool, so 82 models didn't have the rear headrests? I had no idea... This is a Brisbane built April 1982 car.
Lol I had an Alloy head 2 250 in my TE cortina back in the late 90's
That little guy would have shifted!
I currently have a dilemma, looking at an xd 6cyl spac I believe and also a 81 fairlane factory 351 . Hard choice
The air cleaner pipe is the same as used on the 4.1 air cleaner
Congrats on the new purchase. Looking forward to watching the build.
What ended up hapening to your Sigma? I enjoyed that build as I had one as a first car and hotted it up a bit
The Sigma is alive and well, it lives on a country property, cheers.
So, Peter is the plan to get enough cars on restricted (historic ) registration to be able to drive one car to the mandated limit for historic regos and then swap into another historic car, drive that to the mandated limit then swap into another car and do the same until you can legally drive the first one again. Is the mileage limit 5K per year or 90 days on the diary ?
I’m
The opposite - I prefer Holden V8s and Ford 6s!
You could get really creative and convert it to an LTD😮
Shame they changed the original stereo as it had the philips premium sound system option which was and is very expensive option back in the day. They are original door trim speakers peter. They are philips brand
Cool stuff mate, have you ever fitted up a 6cyl power steer pump to v8 ??
The stereo is from a xf gl Falcon
I thought the 6 cylinder ZK Fairlanes had the EFi 4.1 in them
Not the pre '83 models. Instead, they had the option of V8 power if you didn't want the 4-1 carb motor.
mistake mine was zl ally rocker cover fairlane 86
Would like to build a big block ford 2..75 9 inch overdrive and gear vendors to use 9 liters to 100 maybe better
Why do you like Holden 6 cylinders over Ford ones?
I had a six-cylinder 202 HQ once and the motor did not inspire me at all. I am sure it could have been built to be far better, however, the car was very much end of life due to lots of hidden rust and very poor overall condition.
It has nothing to do with efficiency, power or who made it... I love a Holden red six in an LC/J. An HQ, J, X or Z would naturally need to be a 253 or preferably a 308. It's just a fondness for them really. Where Ford are concerned, I prefer a (Windsor or Clevo) V8 to a six. The Barra is the way to go and that's irrefutable, I just prefer old school, that's all.
@@PeterAndersons An Uncle had an EH wagon. The motor in that was very smooth and quiet. You could hardly hear it running. The car seemed to last forever.
Why not just leave it as a 6 and keep it factory? Its very honest and original
I could, but it'll be smoother, quieter, more powerful, yet still look factory when I'm finished. I also am yet to find out whether or not this is the original engine. If it is, I'll hold on to it.
Hi Peter, CHASING SOME STARLET PARTS.... how do I contact you, thanks
These are beautiful cars Peter, but the colour is revolting. Even new it would have looked like a luxury bogey. We all know your paint "touch up" will be a complete strip and respray lol...maybe consider another factory colour? Unless you like it of course....but I can imagine how quiet and cruisy this would be on a country trip..great score!
Shouldn’t be a Webber 32/36 that what you would find on like an escort these have a Webber 34adm
Why not put a Barra in it??
Nah, I have no funds for this one and have pretty much everything here for a 302 conversion. Barra's are awesome, but I also prefer old school.
I'm mad. Not because of your video, I'm just a grumpy old man.
Still got the Sigma Pete?
Yes mate, it's alive and well!
Hi Peter, ever considered going live? Great opportunity to answer the many many questions I see in the comments, also, looking for a hatch for a Starlet if you have one in white???
3 Weeks move it
If you want another car then you have to have it…..
Better than regretting a missed opportunity
Do it up and sell it to a farmer?😅
Not a fan of the steering wheel anyway who would pop rivet chrome moldings on that would buckle another adopted car Peter you know what you're doing I'm glad you will pull out the 6 cylinder and put a v8 in it cheers.
Hmmm I think your time, money and energy would be better spent on finishing your XC than the green shita, but that’s just my opinion mate.
Should give the ej away surely someone would want it
Looks an interesting video but I can’t watch people who talk shit. Classic cars have taken a dive in price?? 50K plus for some Toranas, VH commodores etc, please tell us all where your buying these cut price classic cars
People are still asking crazy money for cars, but very few are selling (and most don’t sell for the crazy prices you see on the free advertising places). Auction results and actual sales tell the true market value.
A VH that I inspected for a guy back around Easter this year was listed for $45K. How did he arrive at that price? Because that’s what he saw others being listed for on marketplace. Turned out it was an SLX tarted up into an SLE (poorly done too) and had severe rust in the boot floor and under the rear window. We walked away. It stayed for sale for months & months. I later heard it sold for $20k. That was still too much IMO. Really clean original VHs I have looked at, that actually sold, were getting anywhere from $15-35K depending on the trim level & driveline.
Nobody's talking shit mate, open your eyes and take a look at the bulk of what's been offered. As stated, asking prices and sale prices are a different thing entirely. Granted some higher end classics such as certain models of Torana or GT Falcons may still be up there, but the bulk of resto projects and less collectible models aren't. It's also closely tied in with interest rates and people's disposable income, just basic economics.
I watch the market closely and it's funny you look in Unique Cars lately the same cars just keep getting advertised month after month and lots of stuff is getting passed over at auction.
Definitely cheaper now, stuff on my105 for example is going for half the price I saw it asking in 2021 for example. It's becoming a sellers market now, as almost every necessity in life has doubled if not tripled in price not helped by people overindulging in expensive wants during the crisis either
I had a ZK in the mid 80's. What a shitbox. 🙄
Hey Bro YOU CAN GET CUP WARMERS TO PLUG INTO TECH After 460.428or 429 with Ford overdrive auto or 5 speed for Lincoln LOW and SLOW to buy
