Cheap 302 Cleveland Rebuild - Tearing Down

- In this video, we take a look at my brothers modified MGC (5 mins), then we pay Jason Hill a visit (3 mins), then we attack the old 302 Cleveland to see what secrets it hides. This engine divulges a few surprises as they always do, but is a fine candidate for our ZK Fairlane project! Hope you enjoy!
For those interested in Jasons modified 351 engine build videos, there are three of them which are located on his channel. Here are the links:

I worked in a foundry for many years. Wouldn't worry about the imperfections in the casting/manifold. Sand moulds are never perfect 😊
love seeing you back on the clevos peter!
The junk yard v8 was what brought me to this awesome channel!
I'm re-living it now haha, cheers.
Looks like a decent V8.
Nice to see the strip down mate…
Good stuff Peter always enjoy watching your content. And you're "Just an observation" is always something that I learn from.
Love your work
Globes on the XA for sure mate
I'm inclined to agree, cheers.
@@PeterAndersons I’m a Holden guy, but I love an XA,B,C with a set of globes. The wider at the rear the better. Ugh Evan Green why oh why did you write that article.
Hey Pete, hope your feeling better mate 👍
Man I do enjoy watching your vids Peter, and Jason's too. Living overseas here for a while now, it's just so nice to see the cars I grew up with being talked about by fellas with good Aus. accents and sense of humour.
And the bird sounds
Peter, FYI. From 1 July 1976 through to March 1978, all 302's and 351's used the same manifold - the one you have on your engine. Come XC Update, Ford changed the 302 manifold to the tapered version (to increase air speed, ergo, reduce bogging down). 351 manifold stayed same. Circa May/June 1978, all 302's changed over to the electronic ignition.
Excellent, I didn't know first gen 302 XC's all had the larger manifold. This is a May 1974 XB engine, so originally would have had the 2 barrel manifold with a Strommy WW. Thanks for the great info, I learnt from you, cheers.
I love these kinds of responses. Sharing knowledge only makes us all better
Did the 302 XC Cobras have points or electronic? They were built in July '78. My GXL is June'78 and came with points.
302 Clevelands had electronic ignition from late XC. The change over was around August-September '78. My June '78 302 GXL was points ignition and I know of a midnight blue September "78 GXL302 that has factory electronic ignition.
Yes mate, so I found out, cheers and thanks
great work Peter. good content
Much appreciated, cheers.
Great job on the xA mate 👏
My 11/78 GXL has electronic ignition on 302 factory, and xd overflow and washer bottles
What's the plan for the engine? Keeping it a 302 and maintaining it factory spec? Or add a few tweaks and goodies bits? Looking forward to the build videos.
Hi mate, it will be rebuilt on the cheap and used in the ZK Fairlane, cheers.
Shocking how much water was in that engine in places it should not be.
It boggles the mind that it missed everything and caused zero damage... how often does that happen??
At 40, use a stone in your drill, and smooth the surface, then do a die penetration crack test, or magnetic particle test. i cant see why it would crack there,.
Wow your brother's MGC's a beauty, not entirely original but she's still a beauty. Personally if I had a chance to own an MG I'd prefer the open top like yours rather than the hardtop like your brother's. Though I wouldn't say 'no' to a nice hardtop if I could afford one.
In my line of work I sometimes come in contact with people who have classic cars and I often see that they've changed their original temp gauge to a mechanical believing the mechanical is more reliable. Really, they're not. Mechanical temp gauges can suffer from a broken capillary tube usually where it connects to the bulb from vibration.
As for that suspicious line on the manifold, it just looks like a casting error, at least it does from this side of the monitor.
How much does it cost for a used 302 Cleveland in Australia
Depends on the condition and how realistic the owner is... Some people still think COVID tax applies and ask several thousand. Generally, for a rebuilder, $600 and up. 'With current prices in mind, I wouldn't pay any more than about $1300 for an original bore one. There are also people who sell the bare long block, then advertise pulleys, brackets, et al separately. I'd want at least some of them included. A good runner would go for more, but I always look for rebuilders so I can strip them and see what's there, cheers.
Gday Peter
Cool video mate love the jasons fairlane
If you get time share my video of strapping a car down to john it might help him out.
Take it easy mate Byron 👍
Hi Peter, Good to hear from you again mate.
Love the junkyard engine videos.
Looking forward to the build.
Take care and God Bless.

Tony
Thanks, you too Tony!
