The hard truth about decluttering.

  • I know, decluttering can be tough, especially when we aren't ready to let go of our old stuff.
"I might need it later" is tragic for decluttering. 😬
I don't consider everything to be clutter. If the item means a lot to me, it brings me joy, or it is truly irreplaceable, I do not consider it to be clutter in my home.
If something does not hold value to me, I don't like it anymore, etc., then that is what I would consider to be clutter.
For example, I have some sentimental items from my grandparents, who are no longer with us. The things I have from them may not be used on a daily basis, but they are important to me nonetheless. Those are truly irreplaceable because of the value they hold in my heart.
Now, if I have clothes from high school that no longer fit me, are not my style, or even hold unpleasant memories whenever I look at them, then I would consider that to be clutter in my home.
Keeping something only for the chance that we might need it later is truly holding us back on our journies of decluttering our homes and lives. If we can get past the notion that everything holds value and needs to be kept, then we could be making far more progress on this journey.
When we go to the store, most of us do not buy things simply for the idea that we might need them someday. No. We typically buy things when we need them, or slightly before we know we will need them. So, why do we keep everything in our homes "just in case"?
Some might see it as wasteful to get rid of things, just to buy them again later.
Here's my take on that. If I KNOW I will use something, I will not get rid of it. If I am unsure of whether I will use something, I will think realistically about the chances of using it in the next few years. If those chances are high, I will consider hanging onto it, depending on the value of the item and how much it would cost me to purchase it again. If the chances are very low, I will let go of the item and pass it on to someone else who could appreciate it more than me.
During this journey of decluttering, it is so important for us to take responsibility for our old stuff and clutter. But, taking responsibility for our things does not mean we have to store them in our homes. Taking responsibility means finding the best course of action to ensure the item is not wasted, or thrown away if it is still in good condition.

So true. I saved so many things just in case and they were organized, fit in the space allowed, etc, and yet I’ve now decluttered them because things are meant to be used. When they sit, even properly stored, they really don’t hold up well. Use things or pass them on.

As someone who has decluttered thousands of items, not only would it be difficult to remember (without the help of photos and lists,) everything I have decluttered but I also haven't re purchased or missed any of it . Only keep what you are using now.
    Great reminder, Thank You!

I have a whole closet of "I might need it later" but I do have a empty box to get started on it.
