Decluttering (Even "Taking it There NOW") In Unideal Situations

  • It isn't quite as hot as it could be here in Texas yet, but I know it's coming. I made this last summer in the midst of the LONG and HOT and DRY summer we had. We made so much progress, even when the last thing we wanted to do was declutter out in the garage.

I say this a lot, but it bears repeating: "TAKE IT THERE NOW" CHANGED MY LIFE. Not just for decluttering but it has spilled into other areas of my life. My mother's "If you cahn't do a PROPER job, don't do it all" led to procrastination and perfection paralysis. You help people take mountains and turn them into molehills. THANK YOU, Dana!!!

Indeed , I break chores down into manageable chunks. At least I still have the situation "better." Wearing my self out, or causing allergy symptoms to flair up just isn't worth getting the task completed in one session. Thanks Dana. Great comments Reid :)

This has been my biggest problem and so far these are what's helping me: having small enough to easily carry bags or boxes to put things in and when it's full take it there, and giving myself permission to leave it unfinished and just shove the bags etc in a corner, but only if I focus on one area at a time. This lets me keep the space at least functional if I suddenly get an injury or something (I have multiple chronic illnesses) and I can leave it for weeks if I have to and then I can get back where I left it when I'm ready.

1st, nice to “meet” your husband. 😁 2nd, I like his added benefit of “take it there now” in non-ideal situations: you escape the non-ideal situation for a bit as you take the item where it belongs. 🎉 And yes, 3rd, Reid’s editorial comments at the end are HiLaRiOuS! 😂

The wet towel around your neck helps in hot conditions. I've even kept a supply of wet towels in the refrigerator to change out as the towel absorbs heat from my neck. It's a game changer for triple digit spaces.

Yes! I discovered this years ago and it has saved me from overheating countless times. Like Dana, I’m in Texas, so the summers are just grueling. This summer was the worst I’ve ever seen…it was still 95 degrees at 3 a.m. many, many nights (night owl here). During the day, it does literally feel like stepping into an oven when you go outside. And thank you so much for sharing your tip about keeping the towels in the fridge…awesomeness! My tip is…..if you’re working outside in the garden, wet down your whole shirt, wring it out just enough to be able to get it on and outside before it starts dripping. With the wet shirt and wet towel, I’ve been able to bear it. For front yard stuff, I make sure my shirt is a darker color, so as not to be “flashing everyone” with transparency. Oh!!! I also wet down my head and hair…a little bit if it’s early in the day, or all of it in the afternoon. I keep having to find additional ways to not overheat the older I get, and having had heat exhaustion twice or thrice causes lower and lower tolerance to heat for me. Okay, I’ll shut up now. 🤪Have a wonderful day.

Yup! South TX my whole life and our 8-9 months of "Summer" is on the way. Have already had glancing blows of heat. I'm 60s and can no longer handle much time in the extreme heat so I'm working on the garage now. Best I ever did the garage was when I started in February and think we finished March/April. Not done but much better organized, enough to life with it. Was unable to start it sooner this year so I began in April. Love your Take it There NOW! Kudos to you going at it in the triples!:)

I don't take it there now all the time. I live in a small house, so usually, things just need to go upstairs or down. If it's to go upstairs, I gather items at the bottom of the stairs, but when I go up, I just take all of those items and put them where they belong straight away. I do the same thing going downstairs, everything to go down goes on the windowsill, and when I go down, everything comes with me and is put away straight away. The key for me is to not allow things to stay on the windowsill or stair.

I do a walk through of my house every couple of days on my lunch hour to tidy and taking it there now means if I decide to stop I haven't got a pile of stuff just moving from flat surface to flat surface. I was really glad to see the orange bucket in this video. Previously I was a bit disheartened because if I had to “take it there now” every item or even a few items at a time I’d have to stop decluttering a lot sooner due to pain and energy issues. Sometimes I only have a few passes of the house in me. But I agree it’s a supper helpful concept so what I do is instead of just grabbing random things to make decisions about, I grab all like items or items i know will live in the same room/area of the house and fill my basket. Then I efficiently make my rounds around the house, and head back to my declutter spot. Does it mean there is the possibility that I need to end a declutter session with a basket that hasn’t been emptied? Yep. But for me, that’s okay. It’s worth the risk in order to not have to stop my sessions short every time because I was walking back and forth around my house too much. That’s much more demotivating for me than an occasional basket that needs to be emptied at a later time. My space is still better than it was when I started, and my pretty basket sitting there won’t bother me.

I got fond of my mask during the pandemic, and may always wear one when I go to crowded places with likely sick people like doctor waiting rooms and the pharmacy line. Anyway, I also started wearing them doing dusty work and it has sure made a difference in preventing irritation. Take it there now makes a huge difference even if only one person actively does it. In an ideal world everybody would put things away as they finish using them, but if that is not the case as in many homes, one person can bring a lot of order anyway. Having orderly common areas is more important than the fairness principle to me.

Masks are a MUST as a preventative, no matter what your health 😉. FL is an oven BUT just like Dana,
I "screwed my courage to the sticking point".
I took advantage of the afternoon storms that temporarily bring the temperature down a bit or work very late at night, and did it in very small increments of time (agh, not an hour) and with LOTS of cool off breaks.
I was able to get lots of Decluttering done in the yard (before hurricanes start) and storage shed.
The outside shed always gets put off but not anymore!

I had been hoping that the "un-ideal situation" would be when you can't get to the place where the item goes because there is too much clutter blocking access to that closet, shelf, drawer, or room. I'd love more clarification on this, because that is the #1 thing that I don't understand about Take It There Now. It seems like this method is already assuming you can walk freely through your home. I can't get to any of the places where any of my things live, because of the piles of clutter that stand in the way. So I need to know if, in that situation, a different method would be needed to just create a starting point.

Maybe plan to start decluttering the things blocking where you would like to put the thing. Sounds like you may have to do temporarily putting the things in a container close to where you would prefer they live. Please don't give up on this, you are making progress . I think Dana says in her books to put it as close as possible. There will be a time come to work on the blocked area.

That's me too! I also need some family help to lift & move stuff. They promise to help but it's never convenient for them & if I'm pushy, they're angry & unhelpful 😢

What if you had a box outside each room? As you are working on a pile of clutter take each thing to the box. When you are done with a session slip each box into its room. Which ever box is the fullest try to put away what you can reasonably reach. Try to work in a different room each time and whenever a box gets full try to repeat. Or stay in one room until you feel satisfied. It kind of depends on your personality and your personal work style. Just a few suggestions, I hope it helps. Hang in there!

My grocery store makes it so complicated to verify that I'm getting the advertised sales price. I "take it there now" by taking 2-3 minutes to review my billl, with calculator in hand, right after I complete my purchase. Usually the bill is accurate, but they overcharged me last week and I resolved the issue immediately rather than adding it to "my to do list". When I get home, I immediately file the receipt and throw it out after I review my monthly statement. (In the past, I would procrastinate before reviewing my receipt and throw it on the table for a week so that I couldn't find it when the statement arrived.)
