I've been scammed. The last person that TRIED to scam me, pulled every stunt you said: the inability to use PayPal, the same cash apps you mentioned, the gift card. She even wanted me to put it in her daughter's account under "Family and Friends", so she didn't get charged any business fees. She added a 2nd plant at a very good price too. It was everything you said. I finally said, "I can't do this, I'm not comfortable with it." She got a little pissy, but oh well. Don't be a thief.
That's the same Camaroon arseholes who stole money from me. They knew I was a single mum, struggling and had saved for the plant. I learned a lot from that interaction and am even more careful now, but if you don't know what to look for...they can be very convincing. The one I dealt with was, he had done his research and it genuinely was convincing...until the end. He gave himself away by blocking me, then reinstated the account to try to scam more off me. I'm in Australia, we do not import here, and he was trying to tell me he WAS going to ship the plant, of course, but he needed more money for a phyto certificate. To ship from Sydney. That is plain ludicrous. I actually strung him along for a bit then got angry, called him out for the disgusting scum he was...and he did that same thing of repeatedly trying to ring me. I blocked them. I posted in a group warning others and didcovered there that its a syndicate running out of Camaroon, and they even use locals in AUstralia to seem more convincing. A huge red flag too is if someone contacts YOU offering a plant after you've commented on a group, rather than you contacting them from a fb ad. I know that now...an expensive, sad lesson. It really messed me up for a while. In Austalia we also get endless Indonesian sellers trying to convince us to smuggle plants into the country. Just no.
Thank you for letting people know about this. I have been very diligent letting other people know about these things. Because how crappy this stuff is going out. The fact that you made it right for that kid that got scammed, what a beautiful thing to do.
Reminds of when a scammer called me trying to get my health insurance info. He even said it's not a scam I have your SS #. I said everyone has it it was stolen. I refused to give him my info because he said he was calling from the insurance company. I said then you have my info. He said that's not how it works. When I kept him on the phone for 30 minutes he finally called me a F'n moron and hung up. Then called back and left a message filled with curses. Still insisting he was from my insurance company. 😂
Thanks for bringing attention to this. Scammers exist in every strata from housing rentals to new home purchases, pet sales, and plant sales... and those are just from my personal encounters. Jeez, just think if they actually put their energies into something legit.

Also, the fact that they are taking advantage of kids is awful. Facebook is riddled with scammers. I wish FB would do alot more to rid scam profiles from their platform. I used to buy from fb plant groups but not anymore I only trade/buy from local groups that can meet up. The internet is a blessing and a curse.

Venmo blocked for them *45* hours 😂 There's always small give aways like this but it's easy to overlook the signs when you want something bad enough (speaking from the experience of buying a pothos node sold as obliqua🤦) I dont know how these people can do this for a living. The guilt alone would eat me alive.

Etsy plant scams are all over the place, too. The shop is almost always located in Sri Lanka and has "Ceylon" in the shop name.
