I've seen a lot of people try to imitate this bit, both professional comics and amateurs, and none have come close to achieving the timing and understanding of it. No mistakes, not going off track, and doing it with conviction. This is one of the funniest comic bits ever made, and they were the best at it.
"Who's on Stage" by Slappy Squirrel and Skippy Squirrel on _Animaniacs_ comes close.
@@Wired4Life2 Yeah, it was funny. But to see it performed live without a script, extra takes, or someone controlling the audio is again, far more impressive. But yeah, funny and well scripted, but not close.
I disagree, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal and a couple of other comedians did a great follow-on to “Who’s on First”, you should look it up. I say that as a long time fan of the old radio and movie comedy teams (I’m a boomer and some of them were still alive when I was a little kid watching them with my parents.)
@@captainnerd6452 I saw it when it aired. They changed the script, they had errors, they missed in their timing a bunch of times, the didn't do it at the incredible pace these guys did it, and they didn't act it as well. Sorry. Wrong...and I'm a boomer as well.

When my daughter was in high school, we were talking about something and she said something that triggered me to respond as if in this skit.
(It’s been 8-10 years ago now, she might have said “I don’t know” and I responded “Third Base”)
She looked very confused. But since she is generally patient with her mother’s variety of crazy, she allowed me the time to find a UA-cam clip to show her. She laughed and enjoyed the humor.
The best part was, a few days later, one of her teachers made a passing reference to the skit, and she was so tickled to be the only one in class to get the reference 😎

Here's a little history on Who's On First. "Who's on First?" is Abbott and Costello's signature routine. Time magazine (December 26, 1999) named it the best comedy routine of the 20th century. The sketch was based on other earlier burlesque wordplay routines. They began honing the routine shortly after teaming up in 1936, and performed it in vaudeville acts in 1937 and 1938. It was first heard by a national radio audience on March 24, 1938 when the team were regulars on the Kate Smith radio show.[2] By then, John Grant had been writing or adapting other sketches for the team and may have helped expand "Who's on First?" prior to its radio debut. He stayed on as their head writer into the 1950s.
Depending upon the version, Abbott has either organized a new baseball team and the players have nicknames, or he points out the proliferation of nicknames in baseball (citing St. Louis Cardinals sibling pitchers Dizzy and Daffy Dean) before launching into the routine. The infielders' nicknames are Who (first base), What (second base) and I Don't Know (third base). The key to the routine is Costello's mounting frustration set against Abbott's unyielding formality. Audio recordings are readily available on the Internet.
A notable version is the first television performance on the 1951 Colgate Comedy Hour.
"Who's on First?" is believed to be available in as many as twenty versions, ranging from one minute to up to ten minutes. The team could time the routine at will, adding or deleting portions as needed for films, radio or television. The longest version is seen in "The Actors' Home" episode of their filmed TV series, running approximately eight minutes. A live performance commemorating the opening day of the Lou Costello Jr Youth Foundation in 1947 was recorded, and has been included in numerous comedy albums. The team's final performance of "Who's on First?" on TV was on Steve Allen's variety show in 1957.
They were a comedy team in the 40s. Classic comedy. Nothing dirty just good wholesome humor if you can keep up with them.
Many believe this is the greatest comedy skit ever written. It was performed by Abbott and Costello and their timing was flawless I remember listening to this as a kid and it never gets old.
Blows my mind how they could go through that routine and both of them keep straight faces while the audience is busting up laughing!

That version was the best. My son and his friend did this skit for a talent show when he was is 6th grade. The whole crowd laughed loud. And booed when they didn’t even place in top 3.!! The parents weren’t happy!! Which made me feel proud.!!
I love that it's funny and clean. It doesn't require a lot of foul language. It's funny and you wouldn't mind you kids listening.

Me and my girlfriend argue like this. I believe she does it on purpose inorder to win the argument. I'll get mad and say, 😡"That was another discombobulated rebuttal!" She'll say, "No it wasn't." I'll say, "Forget it!" She then walks away smiling.
On another note I appreciate what you do and say to people about getting help or asking for help when you need it. I also like that you encourage people to talk to someone when they feel like they want to do harm to themselves. I myself have been there before and was lucky enough to realize it was ok to ask for help from my family and friends. I had gotten better and felt more loved than ever, had things start going my way, my life was improving and then craps. My health started having issues and then my mom passed away. I'm on the edge right now but I'm trying not to let anything or anyone push me over that edge. When I watch channels like yours I get a laugh and feel better, so keep being yourself. You're a blessed soul and I hope one day I might get to meet you one day. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Abbott and Costello are my favourite comedy act. In the 80s I showed this to a friend of mine, and he burst a gut laughing. Another great one is when Lou explains how 7 goes into 28, 13 times. People should check out their many movies.

Costello is the short guy. I've been watching comedy like this all my life. My mother loved the old black-and-white movies and I grew up on them and love them as well. A lot of younger folks don't want to watch anything in black-and-white and won't watch unless it's in color, my son included. They're the ones losing out because, as you said, they are comedy gold. Those early movies, all different genres, from scary to gangster to funny to romance, are the best.
Who's on First is one of the greatest comedy bits of all time. The next one you do is more modern. Top Soccer Shootout with Scott Sterling and Top Volleyball Blocks with Scott Sterling. You will NOT be disappointed.

I ended up doing this routine with my father driving him nuts. He went to visit relatives in Ware, Massachusetts, but I didn't know that. So I asked him where he went last weekend, and he said "Ware." I said "don't ask me where you went, I'm asking you." He said "Ware," I said "I don't know where you went lasts weekend, that is why I am asking you -- where did you go??? He said "I went to Ware in Massachusetts." I said "I don't know where you went in Massachusetts, you tell me where you went, I'm not a mind reader..... and this went on and on -- it was so funny.

I usher at a theater and saw an amazing comedian Jeanne Robertson this past year before things have been closed. She's an older woman that is clean and clever. Her poundcake sketch about her husband left brain is so funny. She gives the audience a card with the recipe and leftbrains on the back. She also came down and took a picture with everyone that wanted one with her after the show. Before the show she even came down at our meeting and introduced herself to us and took pictures. She is an amazing woman. She also has a sketch about naked bungee jumping or the whitewater rafting with Baptists and so many other funny sketches. I admit I was surprised because I had never heard of her and left a fan.

Watched some group reaction videos of Abbott & Costello but hated it. Sadly people of today seem to have dumbed down to such a level that they (excluding some like you) fail to spot the differences between the eras & just vainly keep laughing weirdly.

If you listen closely to this routine (which is from their 1945 movie “the naughty 90s”), the cameramen are on their laughing. They did a few retakes and they couldn’t get the camera meant to stop laughing so they just finally went with this take. They perform this routine thousands of times from 1936 until 1956. This is their most famous routine and as I mentioned earlier it’s considered the greatest comedy routine of all time. There were other routines in burlesque with similar wording but they made this one their own by adding their own lines.
This was just beyond a classic.. its referenced & loved to this day... amazing. Ive seen it a thousand times & it never gets old. My father loved this, & a gang called the Bowery Boys, this was always on in my home when i was a little kid.. love it 🖤

They actually would often change the specific details of the act to keep the argument feeling organic, so the popular 50s recording is tangibly different than this one.

One show that I wish you'd watch is a classic called Father knows best. It still comes on my tv every day for an hour and the lessons are still true to today. It had funny moments and it has lessons that should be taught today.
I used to watch them all the time as a kid. I also watched the Little Rascals, Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, and the Bowery Boys.
My First scene in 7th grade that I thought was dumb. Now as an adult I appreciate the simplicity of this skit

This was a famous routine Abbott and Cosetto developed in there burlesque days .. This was a long bit that really was difficult to duplicate over the years by other performers .. Very complex... Fun fact during WW2 they were so popular that they were the highest paid act in the country ..

"Who's On First" is actually in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. As you go through the museum, there's a room with benches to sit on and a screen where this routine is looped. Really cool!
I loved all of their movies too, Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein was the best.
