Hi Nigel, you are firstly a superb fly tier and angler. I have 3 of Berts original mettican bugs (which i bought direct from Bert 17 yrs ago and he told me he tied few i bought he tied them the previous day) and last week stripped one that was battered a bit to see Bert's tying as i wanted to tie the original with same materials and doubles fly is tied on. Learned a lot and how to tie in the original eyes which Bert said to me not many can do. Im getting there, taking my time and learning as i try to tie the original out of pure interest. I agree vid looks nothing like the original mettican bug and eyes take a bit of thought at first working out how Bert tied them, im getting there.

The one Bert tied was all calf tail and wing and tail where not as long never kill any on that one but the other one killed a lot of fish which was his best killer of all which not many know

Hi Ryan. I kinda like this version. I think the teal imitates the big eyes we see on many of salmons prey including young salmon. I know back in the 60s or 70s when they banned the sale of jungle cock we tried many substitutes. There is no substitute. Keep em coming and get out and fish. Take care.

You are very good as a fly tier, but that is not an original tying of or anywhere near Bert's original mettican bug. I own 3 original mettican bugs i bought direct from Bert 17 years ago which he tied himself the previous day and takes a lot longer to tie as mentioned to me by Bert himself than 1:20 a lot longer. He told me himself many years these do not come up for sale often as they take a long time to tie and not many can do the eyes. When i asked him who could tie me up a few originals, he said there is not many at all that can tie it right, i know of two that can and Bert was right as others have tried and what they tied me was nowhere near the original. I have stripped one of my Bert's originals down that he tied himself which i bought direct from him leaving me two in pretty good shape, helps when one has the originals in front of them.

it would be great for you to share then so we all can learn from the original
time to tie a fly however is totally irrelevant and will always vary between different fly dressers

Sounds like somebody fell hard for a marketing pitch and paid too much for flies

@@RyanHoustonflytying Hi Ryan, i have many of Bert's originals and flies tied by Bert, private use only. Re time tying fly it was Bert who told me this himself. Tight lines.

If I remember correctly there was a video from the late 80s or early 90s with bert tying a mettican bug it wasn't tight lines on the agivey but another. I have one of his from that time calf tail for wing and tail yellow floss body ribbed with embossed silver and teal eyes.
