I’ll preface this with... it’s MY used mattress topper, lol! I’m not sure I would’ve used just anyones used mattress topper for this project - but if you want to, to each their own! Just be sure to sanitize either way :)
I drew out the dimensions of the headboard I wanted to make. Originally I wanted 3 straight panels across, but I didn’t have any scrap plywood that would be long enough to do that. So I decided to make a split panel headboard!
I cut four 34” x 14” pieces of 1/4” plywood with my @kregjig Rip Cut
I used the edge of a pint of paint to draw out rounded edges on one side of either panel. I cut with my @harttoolsusa jig saw!
I used fabric scissors I found at an estate sale to cut the foam of the mattress pad into TWO 34” x 14” pieces
I then used a steak knife I had at Goodwill to butterfly it in half
I bought some very cheap upholstery lining at hobby lobby and used a @harttoolsusa crown stapler to upholster it to the plywood & foam. Pro tip - leave the edges for last!
I used a dreamy green velvet fabric I also got from Hobby Lobby, and upholstered that on top of the lining
I dry fit the panels together to see how they would look, then flipped back over & screwed on scraps of plywood to secure each panel together. I used random screws I had laying around the house! Nothing longer than 3/4”
I decided I wanted my headboard to be 52” in height, so I used plywood (this one I found on the side of the road) and used my miter saw to cut two pieces to size
I screwed in these pieces so they would act as legs to elevate the headboard to my desired height
I then brought it to its new room & pushed my bedframe against it to secure!
What do you think?!? I think this was a really fun, budget friendly DIY project that elevated the look of my guest room 🙌🏻 Now I can’t wait to add all the decor! 💃🏼

This is an awesome idea! I think I'll make one now 😊
Do it!!
Seems like a great idea; but how do you sanitize the mattress topper?
