I played this today for my twin grand babies, almost a year old. I marched around for them and they loved it, joining in waving their arms. Bring this music to your little ones.
What a happy memory you made, marching w/ your grandbabies! I think they will never forget such a wonderful grandma!❤ The first time I remember singing was in church with adults towering above me. Everyone was standing & all I could see was the back of the pew & their backs! But I thought it was the most new & wonderful place in the world. 🕊
I love this song so much. I love how it starts out with one part, then goes to another part, then onto the other parts before weaving them all together at the end. It really is exquisite.
If you like that, listen to King Cotton. Very similar in that regard. Although if you listen to this, you probably have already heard the other as well.
On every INDEPENDENCE DAY ( July 4th 1776) I play John Philip Spousa marches. His military marches are the best and I am proud of him and of his great Love for The United States of America, my adoptive country since 1975. The Land I Love.,.
In his 1928 autobiography, aptly entitled "Marching Along", Sousa related that he was on vacation in Europe when he got word that his band's manager Blakely had died. The march composed itself in his head during the voyage home, to finalize arrangements for an upcoming tour. The 1952 movie took a liberty with this: an epidemic of some sort sent him to sea.
Love the flute and piccolo part at the end! Our band featured me and the other flute players when we played this at a summer concert, although unfortunately our band didn't have any piccolo players.
I am American woman from Fort Worth, Texas and I can say: John Sousa he is the most famous composer of American marches ( he composed over 130 of them) and one of the most famous composer of marches in the world ...
79 years ago, US forces declared victory in Okinawa, with this song being played in the ceremony as the US flag was raised. This year, a joint US-Japan military concert was held between the US Marines band and the JGSDF Band in Okinawa. In the final song which was a remix of several military marches of both nations, the piccolo solo from this song was played. However, it was not a Marine playing it, but 2 Japanese flutists. Both nations have come so far.
Ukraїnian congratulations to the whole planet) You can treat the USA differently ... but Souza is really a strong composer in his profile. One of his best marches the planet has received.
Can anyone explain to me why Sousa hated French Horns? Basically in every march the French Horns play the intro and the dogfight sections, but everywhere else, they are turned into a rhythm section. Playing nothing but afterbeats or some rhythmic da da dat repeat. Annoying
I’m not sure, but I’ve seen the bassoon part for King Cotton, and the same can be said for them too. It’s really a shame because both French horn and bassoon are beautiful instruments.
I can explain. there are two ways you can think of this. one way is like a gun, the low woodeinds and low brass (sometimes bass trombone or trombone 3 and euphonium is doubling tuba( being the 1 and 2 being the trigger and the horns being the two ands being the shot. the other way is military march form. low woodwinds and brass being the left (the initial step) and the horns being the right. Now, it 3:42 is limiting these instruments to these roles good. No. but is it used a lot because of tradition. yes.
De gustibus non est disputandum it has been wisely said, but I regard Sousa as America's greatest composer, more worthy of a Nobel Prize even than the great Dylan.
JPS greatly distrusted recorded music because he rightly foresaw that it would tend to discourage a lot of people from learning to play and sing in live performances.
this march is performed by many musical groups around the world and many of them change it up or shorten it. perhaps they think it will be better if they leave out a little something here or there, or they interpret it their own way, but that is a huge mistake. an original, full, and true rendition is the best and only way to perform this march ! i was so pissed off when keith lockhart, the anointed hip boy genius who replaced john williams as the conductor for the boston pops orchestra, decided to do a disjointed and shortened medley of sousa marches on the iconic and traditional 4th of july concert on the esplanade in boston. he would bring in featured 4th acts like cyndi lauper, which left out any listeners over the age of 30. i like cyndi lauper, but this was a show for all ages, not just hipster wannabes like keith lockhart. by herself on july 5th, she would have her own huge crowd, but on the 4th of july show, little keith left half of the crowd saying -- cyndi who ? then he mangled the music for the fireworks, including the 1812 overture.
Well as the story goes, during John Philip Sousa's and his wife's memorable visit to Italy, the humourous Italians claimed that "The Stars and Stripes Forever March" was arranged by a well-known Italian composer named "Giovanni Filippo Sousa". This just goes to show that music can bridge the gap between different cultures and bring people together, no matter where they come from.
A marching band came through my town playing this the other day. Oddly enough they were all using saxophones but you could still hear every other instrument somehow. Not a single one of them would sign my petition to make whiny congressmen play violent video games. 0/10
I don't dis-like S&SF, but I get tired of hearing it when there are sooooooooooooo many really great Sousa marches that could be played - as per these wonderful CDs by the USMCB.
@@anthonycaro2582 I agree that there a re better Sousa marches and that S&SF is overplayed...but I also think is overplayed bevause ot was literally named the national march of the U.S..

Yes, because I would have known J.P. Sousa. On the other hand, life was a little harder back then.
His marches are epic "symphonies on the march."
Yeah but they were all sitting down when recording this lol
Yes I appreciate so much glory and beauty
In an army of alternates
I consider John Philip Sousa an American hero, his music had stirred up massive patriotic passion. He was king of the military March .
I have to second you on that
Not bad for the son of an immigrant father from Spain.
I wish I had found this earlier. This is the cleanest and most well-played performance I’ve ever heard recorded of this piece, much love!
It is, except for the f'n piccolo overkill. Hate that.
This is literally the official USMB channel, obviously it’s clean
This version is faithful to the version that John Philip Sousa wrote, it’s supposed to be like that
God bless John Philip Sousa and God bless America!

The piccolo obligato.
that sucks
