Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Ryan made the decision as Joseph Emerson pleaded not guilty to reduced charges of reckless endangerment; he previously faced attempted murder charges.
Emerson, of Pleasant Hill, California, has also pleaded not guilty to a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew. The judge in that case also agreed that he could be released pending trial.

There's more to this story as I understand it.
The pilot had been suffering from depression for a number of years. Because of strict drug regulation and fear of admitting to a psychological condition or taking a prescribed anti-depressant (which would terminate his employment) he chose to self medicate with mushrooms to alleviate depression. He ended his career regardless. One man's personal tragedy could have been a catastrophic tragedy for all onboard.

Wow! At 2:24 in the video, it shows the area where I lived for 50 years! That little lake at the bottom of the screen, is Panther Lake, which was about 1 mile from my home. I didn't know that they actually used real terrain and stuff in these CGI re-creations. Also, that big lake right above it, is Lake Youngs Reservoir; which supplies Seattle with water. This is cool.

    • @jimmyb8060

Then it said that it was 60 miles SW of Portland, which cannot be, as it would be at least that much NORTH of Portland, if this area is as I claimed it to be. Oh well.

The pilot had a psychotic episode. His best friend had died, he went to stay with other buddies for a memorial. They pulled out mushrooms, he tried them, and as they do in some people, plunged him in psychosis. He felt he was not alive or in a dream state for days.
He lost the career he wanted since he was a kid, which is sad but appropriate. He didn’t mean to harm anybody and didn’t understand what he was doing, so he should not face attempted murder charges. Sad story all around. The moral is don’t play with your brain chemistry. He’s not the only person who has had a psychotic episode from “micro dosing” mushrooms. They are not a safe drug for anybody, but certainly not when depressed. Unless you are under a doctors care, don’t try to fix problems with psychedelics.

He lost his career and will never be in a cockpit again. The chance of recidivism is pretty low. Had he hit the fire bottles instead so the engines couldn't be re-lit, then it would have been a much larger tragedy. Throwing him in jail for the rest of his life would not have undone what happened, or prevented others from doing the same thing since the number of people who have the opportunity are astonishingly small.

This pilot got off to easy, for it will set the bar for future cases. Pilots know to seek medical attention, as a condition of their pilot license to fly. Cockpit jump seat are for only legal qualified pilots and that would exclude those that cannot preform the duties of a pilot. Pilots that use the jump seat must qualified and fit to assume a pilot roll, and clearly this pilot was not fit as a pilot and should not asked for a seat in on the flight deck. That pilot could have taken a passenger seat or a flight attendant jump seat but did not. I would consider this to be a hijacking event.

IT’s Portland everyone gets away with everything there. Oh, I guess you could cross the line in some way. Like being a Republican and jaywalking. That would probably get you a couple years in jail.😊😷

It's the entire left coast of North America except for Alaska. That would include Canada, WA, Oregon and CA. You could travel that entire region and you would not notice any difference in culture, high taxes, stupidity and intolerance.

The story could have been told in half the time or less. The "stock" footage of an airplane flying and empty seats is pointless and just wastes time.

These recreations, with flight sims, are very popular with millions of subscribers across the many creators making them. Why don't you make your own? Because the millions of us who like them the way they are would prefer they keep doing it their way.
