Great review! I just received mine yesterday and shot some video with it today. That ‘detect only’ AF feature is a game changer for me! I LOVE this camera.
Got the R6 II this week and it's amazing! The high ISOs and shadow recovery is about 1 stop better than my 5D IV and the AF is soooo bang on. Even my adapted Sigma 50mm 1.4 is perfection, and I still can get full H+ high speed FPS shooting with this lens. Wow. Another cool thing is that the electronic shutter goes up to 1/16000s... not even the R5 can do this.
Hey...so both are great but the Canon R6II has better autofocus performance and a few extra video features. So if the price difference isn't a big issue I'd probably say go R6II
Dan, you're IT man! Amazing footage and great skills. Today I will subscribe to your channel. Truly top stuff Dan! Bravissimo (Superlative for Bravo in Italian). I shoot Nikon Z6ii now, would you recommend the Canon for Video instead?
Means a lot!!! Appreciate that. If 4k60 is important, that's the biggest benefit to the R6II but you also get 10bit 422 in log which can definitely help. The R6II costs a bit more but it is a better camera overall. The Z6II is still solid though and I like Nikon's flat profile so I wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade. There is a good chance that the stunning video features from the Nikon Z8 will start working their way to a Nikon Z6III sometime soon
Any word if any of the 1080p modes are oversampled? 1080p quality has been getting badly ignored by everybody lately. Storage is expensive, let's see some optimized 1080p as an option too!
It's not oversampled but there is a 2nd crop mode for 1080p that gives more of a crop but a full sensor readout for better quality, but it only works up to 30fps. But whatever sub sampling Canon is doing in 1080p looks surprisingly good
look forward to seeing your reviews. I'm a Nikon user, but I've also used Canon a long time ago. The feeling is new. I wish you good things in the future.
That sequence off the top!!! I like that Canon has implemented the lock button into the switch, I just wish they stayed more consistent. On the C70, C300 Mark III, and all of their cine line of cameras the power switches always go (off, on, lock) so I don't understand why they have it (off, lock, on) for the R6 Mark II. Very minor gripe, great review as always!
A7IV wins on IQ for stills without a doubt but everything else it's Canon. Unless you need some small primes with decent video AF in which case you need the Sony.
Two questions in electronic shutter mode: 1. Does it have a shutter sound and if so can you turn it on and off? 2. Can you adjust the frame rate on h+, h, l speeds so you don't have to shoot the full 40 fps? Please answer. This is a deciding factor to buy for me.
Yes, you can turn the shutter sound off when shooting in electronic shutter. However, the shutter on the R6II is super quiet so it's one of the few cameras that I rarely even want to use the silent mode You can change the frame rate although I'm not sure how the rates change when in E shutter so for example, i don't know what the fps is in normal h. I'll double check when I get the camera back
@@learningcameras awesome thanks so much. Hopefully you can let me know what the different speeds for h+, h, l are when you get the camera back. I have the R5 right now and wish it had those features. It would be so helpful
But - I think the canon menu system and full touch screen control and battery performance and weather sealing and ergonomics and tap to focus and tap to shutter and costs make this a natural progression for canon users
Would LOVE to see a photo comparison between the R6 and the R6 II. My wife shoots photo weddings on two R6 bodies. She’d love to add an R6 II but is concerned that with the new sensor the colors will be different and require color matching.
@@77dris "R6 original was a bit off". Are you referring to the yellow-ish hue every one was talking about? Also, is the yellow hue only evident when shooting raw (post-processing)? Or does it show up when shooting JPEG/ HEIF formats as well?
Fantastic review! I love the lock button, its pretty much my most important button during the first dance at a wedding! I switch between the bodies a lot at this time and the camera straps have often threw my settings around, and also it stops me trying to compensate for when I move around the dance floor - really like keeping the same settings for the whole dance and think compositionally rather than have my mind on micro adjustments to exposure
That ISO 12,800 video looks incredible viewed close up on a 5K monitor! I suspect because the larger downsample video will look better than the R6. I wonder how it holds up for photos though?
You would think that a lot of the software and firmware changes could be ported to the R6. Especially, the Focus ability, the video mode facility and I dare say the video record limits. It will be interesting to see if Canon does do this.
I have all the RF L primes and the 15-35 and 70-200. Don't feel like I would even want to own any 3rd party lenses so I'm happy with Canon's choice. Red Ring Gang. I'm just waiting on that RF 35 L at this point. The R6mii is a solid choice for sure.
@@kenjiyamamoto8765 once again, you don't need them but there are others that do need them. Sony has a 24-70mm G-Master that goes for $2,300 us dollars. Sigma has a Art 24-70mm that goes for $1,300.00 us dollars. Tamron has a 28-75mm that goes for $900 us dollars. Rokinon has a 24-70mm that retails for $850 us dollars as well. Sony's 2nd lens that is on the $1,000 dollars level is their 24-70mm F/4 that goes for $800 dollars. The build qualities are all different for the 5 lenses but the prices are the biggest factors in people going with the brand. And if 3rd party lenses weren't that important, I'm pretty sure Rokinon, Sigma, and Tamron all be out of business right now. Canon on the other hand, cannot afford to lose money on their lenses or cameras which is why you will never see them go on sale until black friday. Sony wins easily because they allow 3rd party lens development.
@@harryvuemedia dude as a canon shooter it does't matter to me if 3rd party lenses are existed, i will always shoot with native lenses,. that's arguments are just coming from sony users,. we canon shooters doest care other camera bodies because we know are camera brand is no.1 and reliable,. sony camera bodies depreciates like sh!t in aftermarket,. thats how bad sony comapies are., 🤣
Opening video was sick Dan! You’re definitely one that has got the art and the tech down! Have had the R6 for about 1.5 years and it’s been great with the exception of overheating on a couple jobs. Latest firmware update, a couple settings to make sure are on, and recording externally on Ninja V, pretty much corrects the overheating in video. Now just recently picked up an R5 and on the latest firmware I don’t get any overheating recording internally and externally. Using the R5 as main and R6 for 2nd body. Not sure if the R6ii is spec’d enough to upgrade my R6 while the R5 is my main body. I like the Photo/Video switch but it’s in a completely different position than R5 and R6i. I’ve always felt the power switch should always be on the right side so you can operate the entire camera with one hand. I do like the face only video focus option (should add to other cameras via firmware), the uncropped 4k60, and unlimited recording (granted I can get unlimited with Ninja V). So looks like the options are: • Sell R6i and get R6ii • Sell R6i and get a used R5 • Do nothing
For photography, if you currently own the R6, then the Mark II is not much of an upgrade. Unless you're a true hybrid shooter - 50/ 50, then yes, sell your current Mark 1 to get the Mark II; I reckon the color sensor from the R5 would complement the R6 II better. Or simply keep the Mark 2 as a back up camera.
My spouse would appreciate option 3 - do nothing. But, that won’t quench the inner hunger for a better camera. It’s a never ending endeavor in the pursuit of perfection. I am only human. And I crave to tech temptation. 😂
In regards to low light performance i would’ve loved to see you compare the footage of the test you did comparing it to the mki. Zoomed in on the noise especially.
Also the rolling shutter in video you mentioned looked horrible. A comparison to the original would be nice to see as i’ve never noticed my r6 having that bad of rolling shutter during video
@@colekidd2 watch other reviewers and the rolling shutter wasn’t that bad. A lot of his looked due to bad framing and picking out one bad photo over plenty of good ones.
Would love a video on comparison of the top Sony, Nikon, Canon cameras at extreme ISOs... I.e. If there's just not enough light and you have to shoot at ISO 12000+, are some models significantly cleaner / clearer than others?
On the power switch… it’s not even similar to the one on the R7. Not just for the movie mode but also it turns in opposite direction! I won’t have both cameras but I can see it could be very annoying for some people. And there was no reason to mix things up.
@@frankfeng2701 absolutely, I was not referring to the whole layout, I agree with you on that. As per today R5, R6 and R7 have completely different power switches. I just find it inconvenient if you own two of those bodies. Nothing that affects overall performance of course, just awkward.
You had me at the opening shots of Olympian Connor Fields ..lol..Im a old school BMX head. It actually was a nice selling point. And props to Canon for having yall in Sony's backyard literally...lol.
2:23 as a mirrorless user, theres a habit of turning off the camera to conserve batteries. Canon did the right thing because now you can turn off your camera with just 1 hand.
I'm a sony boy, I hate to say it but those canon colours & that 4k 60 no crop, but the kicker for me is that 120 & 180fps in 1080P quality which looks buttery, for the price...damn it!
One thing no one mentions on the videos is the R6 mkII uses about 90% of the viewfinder for focusing the RF 600 and 800mm F/11 lenses. The original R6 only used about 40% with these lenses.
Fantastic footage. Wow. Spoke volumes. Great vid. I have the 6R and LOVE IT. In fact, just bought a second one (used). The only thing I really miss from the 6R Mark II is the 60fps at 1080. If I shot sports and/or weddings, I'd be realizing I really need this one. Of course it's still the better camera but fortunately I can still be happy with my two 6Rs.
Your b-roll is the best I've seen so far from this camera pReview series. Anxiously awaiting low light and shadow recovery for photos! I still haven't found a mirrorless that is as good as my trusty 5D Mark IV (most mirrorless exhibit banding that isn't there for DSLRs. The EOS R was terrible for this).
Thanks so much! Yep, hoping I get the camera back in the studio for some more formal tests. The reason for banding is typically the way the phase detection autofocus points are on the sensor itself, on a DSLR the autofocus is a separate system. But the bonus to mirrorless is that the AF sensor can be intelligent!
It depends on a lot of specifics. The R6 Mark II is cheaper and actually better in a few ways but it's lower resolution, can't do 8k and 4k120, and the hardware on the R5 is a bit better.
Hello Dan. Long time fan here. Question: if I press the record video button and Im in photo mode which video settings will be used. Can it be custom set like the R5 where it goes to C3 video settings ?? I need this function and my current R6 or my A74 do not support this. Please check or test. Thank you.
I was contemplating for 2 years getting the R6, I mainly just shoot stills and low light sports; would I be better just getting the mark 2, even though itll be 400€ more? not sure its worth the increase. Im mainly a sports shooter.
Your EF Sigma lens with the adapter will work perfectly. But you will have to use adapters. Unless Canon changes, there will never be a new RF version of that Sigma lens
Thanks for the video… That opening sequence was amazing work. I'm currently shooting on an EOS R and was thinking of upgrading to an R5. I'm mostly a photographer (travel, events, and some sports), but do videography maybe a quarter of the time. Now I'm thinking the R6 Mark II offers a better feature-set for most photographers, even ignoring the price difference. The R5 doesn't have the new hotshoe, limitless 4K HQ video recording, 40 fps electronic frame rate, the pre-recording frames/video option, or in-camera HDR and focus stacking options. The R5 does offer 8K and ALL-I recording, but I can't imagine many use those recording modes, and the 6K external recording is a nice option on the R6 Mark II. I suppose the R5 does do 4K 120, which I could see myself using. The 45mp resolution bump seems to be the last major benefit of the R5. But those don't strike me as being worth the extra $1200… What are your thoughts if choosing between the two?
Honestly 4k120 on the R5 is super limiting anyway...it can only be used in 422 10bit ALL-I so MASSIVE file sizes, limited recording times, and the files are already slowed down with no audio. The R6II is absolutely the best for the price. I fully expect to see an R5II in the next few months though due to those limitations you mentioned. The new hotshoe will become an issue because the new Flashes that Canon is releasing will not work on the R5
@@learningcameras Thanks for the reply and for pointing out the drawback of 4K 120 on the current R5. I hope you're right. It does make sense to see an updated R5 sooner rather than later, especially for hardware changes like the flash hot shoe. But it's hard to say since the 5D/R5 line has traditionally had a longer lifespan between updates.
For photography, if you currently own the R6, then the Mark II is not much of an upgrade. Unless you're a true hybrid shooter - 50/ 50, then yes. Sell your Mark 1 to get the Mark II; Or simply keep the Mark 2 as a back up camera.
Wait a minute. Tamron G2 for canon can't work with autoficus for this R6 mark ii? Beacause I already got one and I recently ordered a Tamron lens. Please do enlighten me. Thank you
They only work with an adapter. The R6II uses an RF lens mount and the Tamron is only available in EF mount. You can use an adapter but they don't work natively. You will get autofocus with the adapter but it will be more limited than if it was a Canon RF lens since Canon isn't allowing 3rd party lens makers to support RF natively just yet
Great overview. Just subscribed. I have a 5D Mark IV and have been thinking about moving to mirrorless. Had been contemplating either R6 or R5. Rented an R6 and, while I liked it overall, I was a bit concerned about the limitations on IQ when cropping. This had me thinking more about the R5 but dang, that price! QUESTION: Is the additional resolution significant enought that you would see a noticable improvement in the IQ when cropping? Obviously it would not be as good as the R5, but is it noticably better than the R6?
Appreciate it! So with 24MP, you can do a decent crop and still have great IQ. Interesting you ask because in the presentation they actually mentioned the 5D Mark IV and said this new R6II actually looks just as detailed with a 100% crop despite having fewer pixels! It still won't really be an image quality upgrade per say but some massive new features, better AF, new lens options, and night and day upgrades to both video quality and features so probably worth it
In the same boat! Was deciding between the R5 and R6 m2. The R5 was also on sale here so the price difference was only $800! I still decided to go with R6 m2 though because I dont need 45mp and the large file size. Also for personal use I just keep JPEGs and even those were significantly larger given 45mp. There is option to shoot in compressed RAW and even reduce jpeg size to Medium which would make it 20mp then. I still decided on R6 m2 tho cause I didnt want to shoot compressed and have 20mp jpegs (rather have 24 lol plus not be anxious over quality reduction since Im at Medium jpegs) Also decided to use the extra money towards rf lenses Have you decided yet?
@@hnm54 I am 99% sure I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on the R6 Mark II but also keep my 5D Mark IV. 24 MP isn't too far from the 30MP my 5D4 has and Dan's comment about the Cannon Rep stating the IQ for the R62 would be just as detailed as the 5D4 when cropped to 100% makes me feel a little better about the lower-than-R5 resolution. I also really like some of the AF features and the faster shutter speed in electronic shutter. I also like the fact that both card slots are the same so no need to go invest in expensive CF Express cars and reader, etc. This might be my best option to stick my toe in the mirrorless world at this time.
Great review as always, thanks! Canon always feels like the cool kid who just moved to a new school. Canon has the largest user-base, phenomenal history, manufacturing, and artistic acumen to draw from and yet, they can't figure out an on/off switch, add touch-bars, and then deny users one of the top reasons everyone switches to Sony, 3rd Party glass. The new cool kid is often trying to test the wind to see how things work where he's landed (as a military Brat I resemble these remarks :D)... even if the new kid recognizes the differences, he rarely ever really "gets it" till he's lived there several years. Canon should not have these "new cool kid" issues at this stage in their game. Put the on/off switch where everyone else does, support Tammy, Sammy, Sigma, etc... their kids need to eat also, and get with the full-HDMI picture. That said, great camera! Even though I just purchased an A7iv, Canon is still my favorite user experience overall.
Thanks! Yep, 24MP is plenty. Maybe product photography/advertising could use more (and the R5 works for that), but for everything else, 24MP should be good
HDR PQ does allow 10bit color along with the LOG profiles. I'm honestly not sure exactly why you would use HDR PQ instead of log unless you are using a specific HDR workflow
I can try. I'm usually changing my lenses so much though lol. But all Canon RF glass...I own all the F2.8 zoom trinity and a 50mm F1.2 so I use those the most
Thanks for the video. Do you see improvements in IBIS performance in video (wobble)? And do you know if you can toggle the IBIS off in settings while leaving the RF lens IS on? That is not possible on the R6. And one more question: Are the C1, C2 and C3 program modes now also available for video?
We were both at the same event shooting the same bikers. We were usually not next to each other shooting at the same time but yeah, we shot the same event with about 15 other camera reviewers from different publications. We previewed the camera at an event together but we definitely aren't sharing images if that's the suggestion...we had cameras so anything in his video was shot by him and anything in mine was exclusively shot and edited by me
The more important thing is that the photo/video switch is also on the right side of almost every other camera. That's the one I wish was on the right for 1 handed fast switching. It's the fact that they moved that to the left that's confusing in favor of moving the on off switch. But very small issue lol...more of a question of why change that
“Or you need to use adapters and old EF lenses which is not a great solution” … just curious, what’s not great about using Canon EF lenses on the R6 II?
Oops, no, it has only focus bracketing and not focus stacking. I just looked at the online user’s manual. You have to stack the shots in PS or some other software.
Great video and looks like me stepping up from the original EOS-r to the R6 MK II was a good move. Curious if R6 accessories like a cage or HDMI guard are the same.
Thanks! So I can't say that all cages will work but the smallrig one does appear to work. I haven't personally tested it to see if there are any functionality issues with the switches but it does fit. Since the sizes are so similar though, I'm sure cages and HDMI guards will be fully supported very soon...like as soon as the camera ships and they can verify fits
hi, i have a 5dm3, so it's very old. to focus on moving subjects we have to use AI Servo and hold focus down. are you saying with these new cameras, you don't select any different "mode" at all? you simply just keep it on AUTO detection, hold the shutter down halfway, and it will remain focused on the subject?
So what is the bit-depth for electronic shutter? Is it only 12-bit at all speeds? Can you choose only one speed? No info anywhere on this. Thank you for your video.
It will be 12bit. I'm not sure if that's also when using it at the slower speeds but definitely at 40fps it is 12bit compared to 14 bit raw in mechanical shutter up to 12fps
Hello, Dan. Great review on the Canon & Sony A7 IV. I'm a hybrid shooter (videos & photos) and I'm shooting mostly events and sometimes personal photoshoots. Now I'm shooting with Panasonic G9 and I'll change the system and my current system will be used for backup camera. My main problem is that I can't decide which camera & system to choose between Sony A7IV & Canon R6 Mark II. 1-st lense which I'll buy with the camera is the 24-70 and then 85mm & 70-200 in the bright future. Do you have any preferences for any of these systems and can you suggest me which one will be better for me per your opinion?
It's probably the toughest choice ever hahaha. The downside for Canon is lenses...you are stuck with Canon only which are good but expensive and there are still a few gaps. Biggest disadvantage for Sony is frame rates (6-7fps in full 14bit raw vs 12+ on the Canon) and no full frame 4k60 so deciding is about figuring out which of those are the biggest issues.
Cool review Dan, very useful... this new model sounds appealing. Now if I may ask: as a junior videographer (for documentary, events, business and some weddings and sports), would you suggest me to buy this camera or the R5C? Is the price difference of the R5C worth it according to you? I want to upgrade from an old Canon EOS 80D APSC DSLR (1K video), and I feel it would be a good time to go mirrorless and Full Frame, do you agree? I don't know much about Panasonic (S5?) or Sony equivalent cameras, would you suggest checking them first? Thx
Thanks! So the R5C is a very video focused camera and to a fault of the photo aspects. I think the R6II would be a better way to go unless you plan on using the R5c completely for video and ideally less run & gun since the battery life isn't good and Canon took away IBIS for example. The Sony FX3 would be a better option if you plan on shooting video almost exclusively otherwise the R6II is an amazing hybrid all around camera
Beautiful review and footage! I have the R6 for video and thought I might skip the mk2 until I watched this! One question, as with the R6, does the R6 mk2 lcd still go off when using an external hdmi monitor?
Thanks for all the information! I just have one question: Is it possible to lower the 40 fps in electronic(!) shutter mode? I do mostly weddings and already the 20fps in the R6 is great but in some situations a bit too much. (I know I can switch to mechanical but that has other disadvantages...)
@@janmartinnolle7903 once in the electronic shutter I just went to where I always change the speed on the lower left side of the touch screen. It changes the same way you would change it when I’m the mechanical shutter mode
Great review. The camera is awesome. The only thing Canon needs to improve is dynamic range (especially in video) and silent RF lenses. Sony is ahead in both of these areas. RF lenses are surprisingly noisy when autofocusing. Any on-board mic picks up the constant "ticking", especially in a quiet environment.
@@TC-hl1ws The new mount allows for new optical formulas and faster communication with the cameras for better autofocus performance as well as adding custom dials to lenses
Complaining about the power switch is kind of a proof of: You can never make happy everyone... I always loved one-handed ergonomics on the Nikons, and complained about the quite arbitrary power switch on the Canon's. So I am for once happy that finally the power on-off is on the right side.
So the problem is it's not 1 handed to switch between photo and video anymore... I'd way prefer that. They took that aspect away by changing things up the way they did. I agree that 1 handed operation is best but my argument is this change took that away if you switch between photo and video which I'm way more likely to want to do 1 handed than shutting down the camera
The R6II is an upgrade to the R7 in every way but that doesn't mean you should switch. If you want the next up in quality and features and the cost isn't an issue for you, I'd say go for it but the R7 is still a VERY good camera. The R6II is on a massive sale right now though: bhpho.to/3T0lCuy
For the outdoor video shots, did you use an ND filter while keeping the shutter speed at double the frame rate (i.e., 1/60 for 30fps, 1/48 for 24fps, etc.), or did you increase shutter speed?
Most outdoor shots were using an ND filter. Since I was also shooting photos, there were probably a few times though I did a quick switch from photo to video without digging out an ND filter. But typically I'll aim to dial in the shutter for video
Awesome job, the footage really sets your stuff apart from all the reviews that drops at the same time.

Another cool thing is that the electronic shutter goes up to 1/16000s... not even the R5 can do this.
Do you like more files of the R6 II or the R5?
R5 is slightly clearer and a tad more resolution visibly, but side by side photo print almost indistinguishable. R6 mk ii is really good.
Would you recommend the Nikon Z6II or the Canon r6 II as a first professional camera? Would love to hear!
Hey...so both are great but the Canon R6II has better autofocus performance and a few extra video features. So if the price difference isn't a big issue I'd probably say go R6II

Thanks. What's holding me back is the dynamic range. I hope you will review it
That sequence off the top!!!
With the new 24 MP sensor, did they fix the "yellow-ish" hue skin-tone a lot of photographers were noticing on the Mark 1?
Why only 24mp for photography when the eos r is 30? What camera will put out better photos ?
Was that 20 second write with UHS-1 or UHS-2 cards? That’s an insane time to write all those photos 😅
A7IV wins on IQ for stills without a doubt but everything else it's Canon. Unless you need some small primes with decent video AF in which case you need the Sony.
Two questions in electronic shutter mode:
However, the shutter on the R6II is super quiet so it's one of the few cameras that I rarely even want to use the silent mode
You can change the frame rate although I'm not sure how the rates change when in E shutter so for example, i don't know what the fps is in normal h. I'll double check when I get the camera back
@@learningcameras awesome thanks so much. Hopefully you can let me know what the different speeds for h+, h, l are when you get the camera back. I have the R5 right now and wish it had those features. It would be so helpful

Would LOVE to see a photo comparison between the R6 and the R6 II. My wife shoots photo weddings on two R6 bodies. She’d love to add an R6 II but is concerned that with the new sensor the colors will be different and require color matching.

I switch between the bodies a lot at this time and the camera straps have often threw my settings around, and also it stops me trying to compensate for when I move around the dance floor - really like keeping the same settings for the whole dance and think compositionally rather than have my mind on micro adjustments to exposure
11:30 Gary Young rider? bmx
Yep!
That ISO 12,800 video looks incredible viewed close up on a 5K monitor! I suspect because the larger downsample video will look better than the R6. I wonder how it holds up for photos though?
I wonder if Canon fixed the issue with AI focusing when using flash unit on the R6 Mark II during low light/ near pitch black condition?
You would think that a lot of the software and firmware changes could be ported to the R6. Especially, the Focus ability, the video mode facility and I dare say the video record limits. It will be interesting to see if Canon does do this.
Superb review. Thank you! 😊
I have all the RF L primes and the 15-35 and 70-200. Don't feel like I would even want to own any 3rd party lenses so I'm happy with Canon's choice. Red Ring Gang. I'm just waiting on that RF 35 L at this point. The R6mii is a solid choice for sure.
but there are so many people who can't afford canon's RF lineup that they do prefer 3rd party lenses.
100% i have canon R6 also 24-70 2.8 and RF 50mm 1.2 i feel i dont need any 3rd party lenses too,.
So looks like the options are:
• Sell R6i and get R6ii
• Sell R6i and get a used R5
• Do nothing
Personally I think some of these features will be added to r5 via firmware
@@ljs2274 hope so, unless Canon plans for a R5ii.
Any issues with R5? Reviews on b&H not giving me confidence
I didn't expect the R6 Mark II that soon
I’ve just uploaded a video on my channel on how I’ve (almost) got rid of the overheating issue on the R6 😁
return the old one and get the new one
Would love a video on comparison of the top Sony, Nikon, Canon cameras at extreme ISOs... I.e. If there's just not enough light and you have to shoot at ISO 12000+, are some models significantly cleaner / clearer than others?
5DmkIV or R6mk2? :)
On the power switch… it’s not even similar to the one on the R7. Not just for the movie mode but also it turns in opposite direction! I won’t have both cameras but I can see it could be very annoying for some people. And there was no reason to mix things up.
To be fair, R7's button layout is a lot more different from R6's than is R6ii's from R6's.
The prices on the new RF lenses are absurd. And its insane we need to get an adapter to use EFs.
Is the R6 mark 2 better in low light than the mark 1?
Yes and no. The R6II has more detail but more noise at higher ISO.
2:23 as a mirrorless user, theres a habit of turning off the camera to conserve batteries.
Canon did the right thing because now you can turn off your camera with just 1 hand.
I still think it would be better to switch from photo to video with 1 hand
I'm a sony boy, I hate to say it but those canon colours & that 4k 60 no crop, but the kicker for me is that 120 & 180fps in 1080P quality which looks buttery, for the price...damn it!
CANON is KING! Always has been! 💪
Great review, mate! Many thanks 👍
One thing no one mentions on the videos is the R6 mkII uses about 90% of the viewfinder for focusing the RF 600 and 800mm F/11 lenses. The original R6 only used about 40% with these lenses.
Would this be an upgraded from a Canon 80d?
Absolutely... Big upgrade
Excellent video, Dan. Nice to see you out there. Do you shoot your canon videos in h.265? Thanks!
Hey! Yes, pretty much everything I'm shooting on Canon is CLOG because that's the only way to get 10bit and that forces you to h.265
Really appreciate that! Yep, the R6 is still amazing
@@learningcameras Yes! This is what I had read too. The R5 and R6 seem improved over the R for sure though.

Hey Dan, can you do a comparison between the R7 and the R6ii?
Yep!

It depends on a lot of specifics. The R6 Mark II is cheaper and actually better in a few ways but it's lower resolution, can't do 8k and 4k120, and the hardware on the R5 is a bit better.

I was contemplating for 2 years getting the R6, I mainly just shoot stills and low light sports; would I be better just getting the mark 2, even though itll be 400€ more? not sure its worth the increase. Im mainly a sports shooter.
Better autofocus and frame rates in electronic shutter so those might be usable features
@@learningcameras how is the rolling shutter? would you still use it for sports and is it an improvement on the R6?

Your EF Sigma lens with the adapter will work perfectly. But you will have to use adapters. Unless Canon changes, there will never be a new RF version of that Sigma lens
Okay thanks! I'll get the adapter until I can afford to switch the lens line up to RF. Gonna preorder the R6 II! Thanks for the help.
Hi! Did you use ND filters recording the test videos?
Yep, most of the video was shot with this ND filter: bhpho.to/3zz5GsC
Your audio quality...amazing ❤❤❤
But those don't strike me as being worth the extra $1200…
What are your thoughts if choosing between the two?
Still debating if it’s worth upgrading from the original R6 or not. Thoughts?
For photography, if you currently own the R6, then the Mark II is not much of an upgrade. Unless you're a true hybrid shooter - 50/ 50, then yes. Sell your Mark 1 to get the Mark II; Or simply keep the Mark 2 as a back up camera.

Can you create custom video shooting profiles c1-c2-c3 for video ?
Wait a minute. Tamron G2 for canon can't work with autoficus for this R6 mark ii? Beacause I already got one and I recently ordered a Tamron lens. Please do enlighten me. Thank you
It's the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 for canon.
It still won't really be an image quality upgrade per say but some massive new features, better AF, new lens options, and night and day upgrades to both video quality and features so probably worth it
@@learningcameras When you say “they” do you mean Canon reps? If cropping IQ looks as good as my 5D4 I would be ok with that.
@@basilbcf Yep, the Canon representatives who first gave us a demo of the camera before we got to test it out
In the same boat!
I still decided on R6 m2 tho cause I didnt want to shoot compressed and have 20mp jpegs (rather have 24 lol plus not be anxious over quality reduction since Im at Medium jpegs)
Also decided to use the extra money towards rf lenses
Have you decided yet?
Is the Panasonic S5ii a better choice for photography now?
Not just for photography but for video, it has quite a few advantages

Hi, does it shoot video on shutter/aperture priority mode?
Dan, in your opinion, is 24 mp sufficient for resolution? great presentation.

We previewed the camera at an event together but we definitely aren't sharing images if that's the suggestion...we had cameras so anything in his video was shot by him and anything in mine was exclusively shot and edited by me
really curious whether they've fixed the yellowcast for the video?
2:22 nopte. on off switch is on the right on almost every camera. Canon is the only special kid.
The more important thing is that the photo/video switch is also on the right side of almost every other camera. That's the one I wish was on the right for 1 handed fast switching. It's the fact that they moved that to the left that's confusing in favor of moving the on off switch. But very small issue lol...more of a question of why change that

hi, i have a 5dm3, so it's very old. to focus on moving subjects we have to use AI Servo and hold focus down. are you saying with these new cameras, you don't select any different "mode" at all? you simply just keep it on AUTO detection, hold the shutter down halfway, and it will remain focused on the subject?
Thanks!!! So unfortunately yes, it behaves the same when using a monitor. I think Canon and Sony both do this
Beautiful image
Thanks for all the information! I just have one question: Is it possible to lower the 40 fps in electronic(!) shutter mode? I do mostly weddings and already the 20fps in the R6 is great but in some situations a bit too much. (I know I can switch to mechanical but that has other disadvantages...)
You can change the shooting speed in the electronic shutter mode in the current R6. I use it during weddings
@@pianofinger Great - how?

What are the disadvantages when shooting mechanical continuous? Is 12fps too slow for you?
Great review. The camera is awesome. The only thing Canon needs to improve is dynamic range (especially in video) and silent RF lenses. Sony is ahead in both of these areas. RF lenses are surprisingly noisy when autofocusing. Any on-board mic picks up the constant "ticking", especially in a quiet environment.
Does it overheat like the R6 Original or they fixed that? I shot weddings films and with the original Im always getting warning during the Ceremony 😱
It's WAY better. You should get at least double the record times from what I'm seeing and no more recording limits!
How would my Canon 70-200 f2.8 is ii lens with an adapter function with this camera. What would be the downside of not using an RF lens?
So your lens won't perform any worse when used on the R6II with an adapter but it won't utilize a few of the improvements of having a new mount
@@learningcameras What improvements might these be? Thank you.
I have the r7 should I switch?
The R6II is an upgrade to the R7 in every way but that doesn't mean you should switch. If you want the next up in quality and features and the cost isn't an issue for you, I'd say go for it but the R7 is still a VERY good camera. The R6II is on a massive sale right now though: bhpho.to/3T0lCuy
Sony A7 IV Or Canon R6 M2? Which one would you recommend most for filmmaking?
Super tough choice. I like different things on both cameras but the lack of 4k60 full frame is pretty limiting on the A74 for me. I shoot 4k60 a LOT
sony very fast focusing camera
For the outdoor video shots, did you use an ND filter while keeping the shutter speed at double the frame rate (i.e., 1/60 for 30fps, 1/48 for 24fps, etc.), or did you increase shutter speed?
Most outdoor shots were using an ND filter. Since I was also shooting photos, there were probably a few times though I did a quick switch from photo to video without digging out an ND filter. But typically I'll aim to dial in the shutter for video
very disappointed, the lack of a full size hdmi port is a deal breaker. Had so much trouble on my Sony A7R111 with that.
The solution is to wait until companies have make a camera cage and then typically those will have a cable lock
@@learningcameras Thank you Dan but I want as less weight as possible and having a monitor only on my gimbal is all I want. Best to you.
