The idea of ~I can do it too~ is important because women, people of color, lgbt people, we're told that we can't do it because we're dumber or uglier or whatever nonsense. So seeing successful people who are women, people of color, lgbt is important in that sense. Its not just 'projecting yourself' it's realizing that certain opportunities that were formerly closed are available to you.

For that time she was more boyish in that she just didn't give a fuhhhh! But she also cared a whole lot at the same time. She was just about living, enjoying life, and just being herself. A strong badass that wasn't limited by her "disability". A "disabled" girl that refused to be handicapped. Stronger than anyone on that show both physically AND mentally!!! I love'er!!!

It helped me while I was younger and getting teased for my red hair. All I wanted was to be brunette so I could be like everyone else. Now that I'm older, I gravitate more to Belle because I love the story and her "I'm odd and satisfied with that" attitude. Not so much who I look like the most because if that were the case, then that would be Merida or Anna. And I honestly don't like those two very much. If we use the Disney Princess example, there are multiple white princesses and only one black, asian, arabic, native american, latin, and polynesian princess (I can't wait for Moana :D). So if we are only basing who we gravitate to by who looks the most like us, I would have more options of princesses than someone who is black and only has Tiana. Not all black people look like Tiana and not all asian people look like Mulan. I feel like every little girl should see someone that looks like her in the media, whether it's through music or movies. Likewise, I also wish I didn't get criticism for enjoying "non-white" celebrities and movies. I can't wait to see Hidden Figures in January, but I've already been given comments like "Why are you going to see that? You aren't black" and "What would you know about the struggles those women went through?". I want to see that movie because it's a fascinating and inspiring story that I want to learn more about, but apparently I have ulterior motives.

Now that I'm older, I gravitate more to Belle because I love the story and her "I'm odd and satisfied with that" attitude. Not so much who I look like the most because if that were the case, then that would be Merida or Anna. And I honestly don't like those two very much.
June Hatter I understand what you are saying, and it is sadly true. If we use the Disney Princess example, there are multiple white princesses and only one black, asian, arabic, native american, latin, and polynesian princess (I can't wait for Moana :D). So if we are only basing who we gravitate to by who looks the most like us, I would have more options of princesses than someone who is black and only has Tiana. Not all black people look like Tiana and not all asian people look like Mulan. I feel like every little girl should see someone that looks like her in the media, whether it's through music or movies. Likewise, I also wish I didn't get criticism for enjoying "non-white" celebrities and movies. I can't wait to see Hidden Figures in January, but I've already been given comments like "Why are you going to see that? You aren't black" and "What would you know about the struggles those women went through?". I want to see that movie because it's a fascinating and inspiring story that I want to learn more about, but apparently I have ulterior motives.
