I bought one five months ago, and this channel was a major reason why. Judging by the comments, I'm not alone. I've been very pleased so far. It keeps me coming back to play.
Hi Robert! I hope you're still practising after almost a year! I hope you're doing well and it's so nice to hear someone enjoying a new hobby...it gets expensive though Haha! Eric is the guy to follow though. Killer musician with brilliant tutorials and music theory
That's good to hear as I have stumbled upon a really nice used one exactly like this for sale at a good price, I'm seriously considering buying it due to this review, sound magnificent with that lowish midrange snarl/shimmer from the Mahogany, I love it, sound and look.
Man, great playing. This clip convinced me to get a D-140. AND, after you mentioned that you liked the F-20 I had to check those out too...and ended up picking one up in a trade. I couldn’t be happier! After playing Gibsons and Martins for years I am now a Guild man all the way!
Cool! I love my guilds! I think they've done a great job at hitting that perfect balance of classic style, playability, and affordability - my three favorite things!
For those curious, the intro song is "On the Road to Find Out" by Cat Stevens. By the way, I was going to buy the Guild OM-120/140 as I heard elsewhere that the D-120/140 lacked the clarity for finger picking, but your rendition of Don't Think Twice convinced me otherwise. D-120/140 for the win!
Aww shucks, thanks so much Joylon! I play a lot of electric, but I really digging the purity of this big, full-bodied dreadnought. Classic acoustic tones :-)
Thanks Eric, the guitar arrived Monday and it’s just like you said it looks great and sounds even better,I’m going to have my tech set it for me and would like to know how you had yours set up ? I ended up putting 11s instead of the 12s that came on it - plays a bit easier that way. Also, my tech noticed they had a shim under the bridge saddle to jack the strings up higher, he removed that and now it plays quite low and comfortable, still no buzzes :-)
I wasn't shopping for a new guitar, but, well, I've had this old Epiphone EJ-160 since high school...Long story short, played and purchased a D-140 with a natural finish a couple days after seeing this video. Sounds great, of course. But the craftsmanship is high quality, too: perfect frets, clean binding, really solid construction.
Welcome to the party! Congrats! These D-140s are a tremendous value. I had my tech tweak the setup and put on 11s now and it plays like butter! How's the setup on yours?
It was pretty good out of the box (or, rather, out of that odd-but-cool polyfoam case), but I'll probably do a minor adjustment. Haven't decided whether to switch to 11s like I had on the old Epiphone or stay with the 12s, which I'm kind of digging.
I just placed an order for this exact guitar Guild D-140 at my local GC. After many reviews and narrowing down to this one. I'm somewhat new to guitar, but not really. Been on and off with lower end cost guitars that prevented my progression. So i never stuck with learning. I took a plunge out of my price range, but this Guitar is Amazing 😁
Oh, no!!!! I HAVE to get this guitar to match my Guild 2512 Jumbo 12 string with the same finish. I'll have to sell what I have to do it, but....I'll find a way. I LOVE Guild Guitars. Eric, your videos are the best! Thanks!
Guild, Guild, a thousand times Guild! For those looking for a guitar a little off the beaten path for exceptional value, I think Guild can’t be beat. I have an M20 and love it. Eric, your new guitar sounds so great!
I ordered this guild d140 about a week ago. It's currently on back order, but is supposed to be here in a week or so. Very excited! And I keep watching your video...excellent playing, and I enjoy the Tom Waits tune.
Eric! Shopping for a new guitar during a pandemic and with two young kids at home is not easy (or super fun). So thanks for this review. It compelled me to buy a Guild D-140 about a week and a half ago and I'm having a hard time putting it down. Thanks for this video and all the others.
I've mentioned before, I love the sound of Guild acoustics! Very nice guitar. I have a 1974 D-35 that I picked up in a pawn shop in NYC many years ago; and I wouldn't trade that tone for anything! Congtrats, always nice to get new toys!
I have one of these (the natural version) and I effing LOVE this guitar. I also own a Martin D-28, and they both compliment each other very, very well. The D28 has a slightly pronounced bass, crystal top end, with a somewhat scooped and focused midrange. The D140 has a pronounced, woody, and somewhat airy midrange with a glassy top end, and present but not overwhelming bass. Both guitars are overall balanced, not having one tonal aspect that jumps WAY out in front of everything else.. but each have their own signature personalities. The D28 works very well for flatpicking and arpeggiated chords while the D140 shines at fingerstyle and strumming. I think the D140 is a more overall usable guitar than the D28 because it's sounds almost as good with flatpicking, single note lines, and arpeggiated chords as the D28....but works WAY better with strumming and fingerstyle than the Martin. IMO....you know. And just because I think it's an important distinguishment to make, you can purchase five D140s for the price of one D28. Let that sink in....... My D140 is flawless. I've literally gone over it with a magnifying glass (I'm serious) and the only flaws I can find are the neck/headstock joint was made at not quite 90° to the neck so it looks a little strange if you stand the guitar up and look at the back of the neck toward the headstock. The neck is perfectly straight and in line with the headstock.....just the slightly visible line where the two pieces of wood were joined is not at a perfect 90°. There also is a tiny, tiny bit of glue squeeze-out above the nut, and on a couple of braces inside the guitar. And I mean tiny amount. None of this is affecting the playability or tone of the guitar. Also, the top isn't bookmatched.....I wouldn't imagine a $750 guitar would be, and I'm not convinced it has any noticeably negative affect on the sound. Everything else about the guitar is absolutely perfect. The back is from a single, quality piece of African mahogany....which has beautiful grain and a nice elegant arch. The sides look fantastic and don't appear to have any unsightly grain anomalies. The top has very straight and uniform grain structure, and doesn't have any weird striping, shading, or other unsightly issues. All the binding and inlays are absolutely PERFECT....no wild lines, gaps, or squeeze-out. The neck and bridge joint are airtight. The neck is straight and the frets are immaculate, although I think it's going to need a light fret leveling and when the guitar is done settling in......welcome to the world of precision construction with organic materials. Also, I think the guitar would probably benefit somewhat from a change in saddle, nut, and bridge pin materials. The gig bag is very nice, also. I can't say enough good things about this guitar. I don't know if I managed to get an exceptional specimen or what, but.....especially at this price....these things should be flying off the proverbial shelves.
what a beautiful guitar. i really loved your nick drake section, he was a magical guitarist. i would love to hear this d-140 in open-d... thanks for sharing it with us, eric
Nice new guitar, Eric! My main acoustic is a Guild D40, same colour as yours, made in 1989 in westerly, Rhode Island. It's a lovely guitar and it was cheap, one of my best deals.
Awesome Guild! Sounds sweeet, great bass tones. Love nick Drake. I have a D-25, all Mahogany. Love to hear some open tunings. Happy New Guitar Friday ! Thanks for sharing Eric.
I bought a D-50 and D-55 both at the same time back in the 90's... both wonderful guitars. I also have a 1964 Gibson Hummingbird by dad used when he played the Opry. The Guild 55 is the best of the 3.
Jack Gray...played the opry a lot in the late 60's earyly 70's. He opened fro Merle and played a lot with Mel Tillis. My dad's bass player was married to Irlene Mandrell. Ralph Emery loved my dad and wanted him in Nashville full time.. my dad declined and moved home.
This guitar really has the Guild sound that I remember so well. I had a few D-25s and a nice D-50 that had a mellower sound than this. I was considering buying a cheaper laminate Guild but this convinced me to save a little bit more. Nice guitar and great playing.
Thanks Chuck! Yeah, I can't wait for this one to break in and mellow out some more. It's full bodied and punchy now, but in a few years should develop that warmth!
Hi, I enjoyed your playing and cheerfullness:) I am impressed with the sound of D-140. I have few questions if I may. This is the best sounding review fo D-140 I could find. So what mike do you use to get such sound, is the recording processed afterwards (I Guess not) ? Is the guitar crafted in China or USA and is there by your knowledge any difference in manufacturing and sound between China or USA made Guilds? Thank you.
There's a touch of EQ and compression that I add in garageband after the fact. I would wager that the USA Guilds are indeed more high quality, but I haven't had the chance to compare them :-)
I see on Guild page that all westerly collection is made in China, so it is cleared. Please tell me, how does the guitar behave in lower tunings. I use them a lot, Joni Mitchell, my own stuff and some blues.
Nothing says a happy home like 3 Guild acoustics in the family! The 12 string model is on my bucket list, this video may have upped the count on my list.
I plan on rigging a Victory Lowrider Goldfoil sound hole pickup for a greasy blues thing. Check out their pickups and cigar box guitars on Reverb and on UA-cam, bud.
You just showed me a different way to play River Man too! The fingering seems much easier in your version and it sounds true to the original. I'll have to see if you have a tab for this.
great guitar great jams and an extra special thanks for turning me onto that george harrison tune iv never heard before and those sweet chord changes... the G to C#m7b5...wow
Was looking to replace my current acoustic as it's very dull sounding and not inspiring. Came across this when I was looking at Guilds. Gave Sweetwater my money soon after :) Great video and lovely playing.
A man after my own heart! I have a Guild DV-52 that looks exactly like your D-140, only mine has Rosewood back and sides. I've had it for 20 years and man does it have a rich, warm tone! I've gotten a number of compliments on its sound. I've been jonesing for a Collings D1 but then I wouldn't play my Guild as much and that would be a crying shame. What's your favorite acoustic guitar?
EXCELLENT review! One of the best reviews I've ever seen. Love how it sounds. Anyways, I am probably going to buy that model in the cutaway version so I will take this review as a pretty good reflection of how the ce model will sound (hopefully). They're on backorder so I'm waiting for it to arrive. I'm really a huge fan of Guild too! Excellent playing by the way! Do you have any idea how the ce model sounds? Have you ever played one?
Agree entirely on the Guild 12's. Have an earlier GAD G212 in natural. Wonderful for Tom Petty tunes. And just got a California made D20 solid mahogany. My friend for life.
This sounds fantastic. What model/place of manufacture is this one exactly? Thanx. I'm looking for a medium priced, full size Dreadnaught with a lot of low end and volume.
This is one of the made in China models. I would describe is as "flat/balanced" frequency response - nothing seems too hyped, everything is represented :-)
In my opinion: the best sounding/playable guitar under $1000 hands down. The resonation you get back toward your body is soothing and the major thing he pointed out that’s pure fact: it’s LOUD and yet crystal CLEAR. 10/10 in my books. Guild is a highly underrated brand.
Totally! I've got this one, also one of their 2512 jumbo acoustic 12 strings (so magical), and I just picked up a Starfire III - I love them all! Totally fits the niche between Gibson and Gretsch. They're the 3rd G!
Just got the Natural and absolutely love it. For the price, it feels like I stoled it ($450 Factory refurb/new cond, with the case). This is a solid wood guitar with Scalloped bracing, not many guitars for under $1500 that has those features. Closer to a Martin HD-28 and sounds every bit as good (In its own way). Construction wise it is flawless, great neck, perfectly intonated, great action. Well balanced tonally that makes harmonic goodness. I really like the old school ragtime voicing, yet still has plenty of low end if you want to do good ol' bluegrass runs. I'm sold on the African Mahagony, really like tones from it.
Been contemplating getting a d140 in cherry burst but also thinking about a martin dx2e in burst... obviously the d140 is solid so it has that over the dx2e but the dx2e still has that martin sound 😫... ive watched every video on both guitars on youtube and can honestly say this video has just made my choice easier. thank you. Il look forward to getting my D140.
Eric Haugen I agree. I love his stuff. Assuming you’ve heard your friend’s Guild, how does it compare to this one? It’s about 2x the price and I’m sure it’s a great value.
Hey Eric, I'm ordering this exact guitar, thanks largely to this super informative review... just wondering if you had a recommendation for a pickup that would work well with the D-140? From past experience I'm not the biggest fan of piezos, but I'm open to any suggestion - thank you :)
I was in the music store to see for the Yamaha FG830 SB. they didn't have it and I had to wait for 6 weeks if I should buy it, but my eye fell on this beautiful guitar. I took it out of the rack and played it and oooooh what a sound. I was branded on Yamaha but that fell into pieces with this sound I was longing for so long on a beautiful Guild D-140. that sound, the clarity and sustain wow, I got to have it. Sorry, Yamaha no offense. Other times maybe.
Hey, this sounds amazing! Do you know if you got yours with the pau ferro or rosewood fretboard? Thanks in advanced! These Guild imports are pretty nice. I have a Starfire II ST and it is fantastic. Competes with a much more expensive Gretsch I have.
@@EricHaugenGuitar do you have any opinion on what string gauge would be good on this guitar for tunning down a half step to e flat? Thanks. Nice playing by the way!
I think you'd be fine with the 12s that come with it! Personally, I'm not a big fan of the heavy bottom string that some folks like - too unbalanced for me
Greetings fellow Eric! I bought this one online - my wife has a Guild f20, I already have a 2512e, and my buddy has the mahogany version of this one, so I was familiar with the feel and build quality of these sturdy guitars :-)
I’m looking to buy my first GUILD! I never play Guild, so I don’t know this brand guitar. I like the dreadnought style guitar. This D140 seems interesting for my first Guild 👍🧐🧐🧐
I reached out to the nice folks at Guild, told them my deal - that I have 2 Guilds already, a UA-cam channel , Berklee degree, plus all my other “professional” accomplishments. They were cool with letting me have this one as long as I use it on the channel - which I most certainly will!
Ha ha ha! I feel really bad for the Gibson employees. I hope someone can swoop in and buy the name so all those people can keep working. They shouldn't have to suffer for upper management's dumb dumb decisions :-)
I think you'd be fine either way - the D-150 might be a little darker due to the rosewood, or maybe the opposite I dunno :-) One is mahogany sides (soft wood) and the other rosewood (harder) - I'm not exactly sure what difference that has on tone or if I'd even notice!
Eric, i have the same guild D-140! I got to tell you that i'm not shy playing my D-140 against any high end guitar, like the Martin D-28 for example! By the way, can you tell me what you used to record this video? Sounds so nice! I think i recognise the shure 57 as your mic, but what else do you use please! Thank you Eric, keep up the good work!
Cool! You're team Guild too! That mic is actually a Rode NT5 small diaphragm condenser. It's running into an Art Tube MP preamp ($50), and then my Tascam DR 40 field recorder. I EQ it and Compress it a little bit in post.
You think sometime maybe for a small demo you could show us how you use the Tascam dr-40 I'm a little too old school and more just plug and play chord guitar amp maybe a peddle or two and I record with a cell phone direct but I was curious to know you talked about it so much and I seen it online and all the music shops but maybe you could show how it works like a little demo? Sweet Guild by way.
Yeah I should do that! The DR-40 can be really useful but truth be told I have to keep the manual handy at all times. Finding the appropriate menu screens to adjust things can be confusing.
I'm really considering this one, but I'm still a little curious about the low end and dynamics. When you listen to a D-40, it's a beast you are listening to! I wonder how different the D-140 can be from the D-140 (besides the countries they are made). If you could tell me about your feeling about the low end and the dynamics of this guitar, I'd appreciate it a lot. Btw, thanks for this video and the other ones you are playing this guitar, they are great to have a good idea about this nice guitar.
I know what you mean, Caetano! A lot of new guitars lack a little bit of low end warmth compared to some 20-40 yr old broken in acoustic. Mine is still warming up, but I'm quite happy with the even representation of all the frequencies I like. It's not vintage, but it's certainly not thin :-)
I have the China-made Westerly D-140 (same as Eric is playing here).. I also have an all-solid D45 copy (custom build to same spec. as Martin D45).. The bass response of the Guild D-140 compares favourable to my D-45 copy.. The D-45 is a little more mid-focused and the D-140 more even, balanced and warm.. But the bass response is killer on both.. IMO close to as good as it gan get for any acoustic.. Never heard a USA-made D40 but I imagine the D-140 would hold its own as it is a joy to play and hear..
can you do a video with the new guild d40 for comparison please? (not traditional, just the usa model in satin. I love the sound of this made in china guild, was just wondering what sound you get for a bit more bucks :] cheers
I just played the OM versions of this line in a store, the OM140 and the OM150ce. The OM140 was the better of the two, and I compared it with s Martin OM18ce and OM28ce, and with Taylor 314, 414 and 614. The Guild held its own for a fraction of the price. The Martins and Taylors were all warmer and had more bass. The Guild was louder, zingy-er and clearer though, with fantastic projection and note definition.. I hear some of the same character in your demo; I think this line tends to have those characteristics. If you like a warm, bassy guitar, this might not be the one for you, but I like it, as I love high-end sparkle and zing.
I think your description hits the nail on the head! Loud, Zingy, Clear, and Defined! I'm hoping that as this puppy ages, more and more warmth comes in.
Hey Eric ! Couple Q.s What style bracing is on the top ? How old is it ? Sounds amazingly open, warm, & deep. I'm super happy for ya ! In 1982 I sacrificed my D-40 for a Fender Precision Bass. I'm never gonna be the same... Got a 10yr old HD-28 now & still pine for my Guild.
This is one of the 2018 models. It does indeed sound amazingly full and open for a new guitar! Here's the specs, I believe it's X bracing on the top: guildguitars.com/g/westerly-d-140-sb/
Eric - Went with the Guild D140e and left the Taylor. Bone nut and bridge added and set up with Elexir Nanoweb Light Gauge strings. Has a great tone. Still haven’t plugged it in, except for when the tech tested it. Thank you for your review!
Eric Haugen It does. According to the tech it sounds as good as most of the high end guitars. He suggested the change to bone. Guess he knew this guitar merited it. It has the same pickup as the cutaways that replaced it. I think a Gibson luthier joined Guild and Cardoba bought into Guild, too. I have a GAD 30R that I’ve kept because it sounded so sweet. About 10 years old or so and solid woods. Not sure when this luthier joined. So, these newest models are getting much better, IMO. Best to you and really enjoy your videos. Ren Ferguson Here’s a video with him... m.ua-cam.com/video/09Kf6jyBuak/v-deo.html
Liked your Cat Stevens songs. I've been playing "How can I tell you"and"I listen to the Wind"! But my favorites are "Peace Train"and"Moon Shadow". Have to get out my '72 Guild D-25 and play it again. It's been neglected for years!⏳
"Spoiler alert: it's gonna respond well" jaja😂🤣. Very nice guitar, man! I'm thinking on buying one but I'm wondering if the cutaway electric version (D 140ce) would sound as good as this one. What you think? Cheers from Argentina!
Ha! I'm silly sometimes! I was just talking to fellow UA-cam guitar teacher Pedro bellora the other day - he's in Argentina too! I think the cutaway should sound just about the same, I'm just such a retro fanatic that I don't like the look of it - but that's just my taste!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yes! I follow him on UA-cam, very good teacher. You're right, I also love the vintage retro style guitars, this one is gorgeous and not so expensive. Here in Argentina it's only available without cutaway, so maybe I'll go for her! Thanks for your time, love your channel!
Tempted to get this only I'm left handed. I have a really good luthier who has converted a right hander for me in the past. I notice this guitar has scalloped braces. Would that make a left handed conversion sound wrong?

Bought a nice used one today after watching this video. Sounds balanced and as good as my more expensive guitars. What a value- Thanks Eric!!
Congrats!
Yeah these are great bang-for-buck workhorses!
what a beautiful guitar. i really loved your nick drake section, he was a magical guitarist. i would love to hear this d-140 in open-d... thanks for sharing it with us, eric
I love Nick Drake! I gotta work out some arrangements for the channel! Maybe something off Bryter Later....
What a nice guy and great demo!
Great review and great playing. I’m looking at one of these now, yours sounds lovely.
Nice new guitar, Eric! My main acoustic is a Guild D40, same colour as yours, made in 1989 in westerly, Rhode Island. It's a lovely guitar and it was cheap, one of my best deals.
Oooh the RI ones are solid! This ones MIC but still dang tight!
Awesome Guild! Sounds sweeet, great bass tones. Love nick Drake. I have a D-25, all Mahogany. Love to hear some open tunings. Happy New Guitar Friday ! Thanks for sharing Eric.
Oooh I love the mahogany tops! So pretty, so warm!
And yeah, I gotta do some Drake deconstruction on the channel - such a brilliant artist.
Very nice playing!!
This guitar sounds so lovely....I have a D15 1992.... love it.
Oooh the ones from the 90s are excellent! I'm jealous!
Hi Eric! I love your videos and how beautifully you play. Have you ever checked out the Rosewood version of this guitar (D150 I think)?
I bought a D-50 and D-55 both at the same time back in the 90's... both wonderful guitars. I also have a 1964 Gibson Hummingbird by dad used when he played the Opry. The Guild 55 is the best of the 3.
Ooh that’s a nice collection! Plus, I gotta ask - who’s your dad??
Jack Gray...played the opry a lot in the late 60's earyly 70's. He opened fro Merle and played a lot with Mel Tillis. My dad's bass player was married to Irlene Mandrell. Ralph Emery loved my dad and wanted him in Nashville full time.. my dad declined and moved home.
Wow! That's so cool!
Lucky!!
Good for you coach. It sounds so beautiful.👍👍
Thanks!
I've been playing it a lot since a I got it - that's always a sign of a good new addition to the collection :-)
Just bought mine. Thanks! Beautiful guitar.
Cool! Congrats!
It's a great bang-for-buck guitar! Really balanced well, and LOUD!
Thank you.
Sorry, I just noticed you have the mic stated. Do you prefer recording with 2 NT5 for stereo o
r mono, like in this video?
There's a touch of EQ and compression that I add in garageband after the fact. I would wager that the USA Guilds are indeed more high quality, but I haven't had the chance to compare them :-)
So is the one you play westerlies series, made in USA or crafted in China?
I see on Guild page that all westerly collection is made in China, so it is cleared. Please tell me, how does the guitar behave in lower tunings. I use them a lot, Joni Mitchell, my own stuff and some blues.
Guild's have such a wonderful tone. I have one of the D-25 Natural models. Another great video. Enjoy!
Nice! One of my buddies has a D-25 - I like that guitar!
I have an 80's D-50 - It's an exercise to play but it sounds like thunder.
Oh yeah I bet!
I can't wait till this one breaks in - it's already well balanced, but in 10 years or so it's gonna get SMOOOOOOOTH!
Love these Guilds, currently have an M120E and it's been fantastic. Been eyeing the D140 for some time, just waiting to run across a deal.
Yeah! My buddy has the M120E and I love that little guitar!
The D140 go for $400-$600 used so you'll probably be able to find a good deal on one :-)
Congratulations! Fantastic sound, I’m almost as smitten by it as I am by the 12 string.
Thanks! It’s really fun to have 3 Guilds now - my wife’s F-20, this D-140, and the 12 all have such different voices!
Nothing says a happy home like 3 Guild acoustics in the family! The 12 string model is on my bucket list, this video may have upped the count on my list.
Beautiful shade top! Congrats
Thanks man! Ya gotta love a good sunburst!
Happy NGD!!! I just bought a Tanglewood Slope Shoulder Historic (J45 Style). Digging the finish on your Guild as well.
Oooh I love the J45 slope shoulder style! I’ll have to check those Tanglewoods out!
I plan on rigging a Victory Lowrider Goldfoil sound hole pickup for a greasy blues thing. Check out their pickups and cigar box guitars on Reverb and on UA-cam, bud.
Cool! Will do! I love the idea of a soundhole goldfoil! Nasty!
You just showed me a different way to play River Man too! The fingering seems much easier in your version and it sounds true to the original. I'll have to see if you have a tab for this.
I'm pretty sure my buddy Adrian @anyonecanplayguitar.uk has a lesson on it!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Cool!
Super mon gars ! Merci de partager.
the las riff is john prine 'fish and whistle'
Yeah! I love John Prine!
You sold me, brother. (The 1-3/4" nut was the deal maker. Mines shipping from the UK tomorrow! 🥰
It's a great bang-for-buck gtr! You'll see!
Eric Haugen I had to send that 2512 back. Had a crack in the top.
nice playin mate
Thanks so much Scott!
great guitar great jams and an extra special thanks for turning me onto that george harrison tune iv never heard before and those sweet chord changes... the G to C#m7b5...wow
Thanks Rob! Yeah, that whole Harrison record is excellent ! In fact, the first solo record by each of the Beatles is amazing in its own way!
thanks man ill have to dive deeper and check them out
Sweet sound Man Good choice
Thanks Kent!
I gotta say, this sturdy D-140 is a really great bang-for-buck guitar. Good projection, balanced tone, and looks nice!
great playing
Thanks Tom!
Was looking to replace my current acoustic as it's very dull sounding and not inspiring. Came across this when I was looking at Guilds. Gave Sweetwater my money soon after :) Great video and lovely playing.
Great review, very engaging
Thanks Anthony!
My 1962 Goya S-14!
Got it for $275 back in 2003 and it has the most unique, ghostly tone!
What a beautiful machine.
Typically I'm into real plain-bodied items with few accoutrements, like the mahogany D15m from Martin. But… this!
Thanks Andy! I’m really digging it!
Your excitement is palpable.
I haven't had the chance to play the CE but I'd imagine it's quite similar!
Agree entirely on the Guild 12's. Have an earlier GAD G212 in natural. Wonderful for Tom Petty tunes.
And just got a California made D20 solid mahogany. My friend for life.
Oooooh now I'm jealous!
Looks nice and sounds great! Enjoy!
Thanks Thomas! I haven’t had a new acoustic since I was 19 - I’m really enjoying breaking this one in!
I think you'll be fine with the stock strings!
They ship with 12s, which should sound very good in Eb!
Muchas muchas gracias por su ayuda y sus videos☺️👍
Lovely sounding guitar amigo
Thanks Dave! It’s next appearance on the channel it’s gonna tackle some Rawlings. It’s not an archtop, but it still sounds damn good!
Yeeesssss....anything Rawlingsy always gleefully gobbled up
крутая гитара, жаль что мне по карману, если только кто подарит, за талант)
I believe you could make a broom handle, baling twine, and wood crate sound good.
Ha! Thanks so much Doug! You're too kind!
Congrats! That's a great deal you got!
Yeah, these guitars have probably the best bang : buck ratio!
Prine! Definitely a “nice” final tune. I love my D-240E.
Yeah! Thanks man!
I LOVE John Prine. He's an american treasure.
A buddy of mine has a 240E - it's a great guitar!
Eric Haugen I agree. I love his stuff. Assuming you’ve heard your friend’s Guild, how does it compare to this one? It’s about 2x the price and I’m sure it’s a great value.
How does the 240 compare to the 140 with respect to overall volume?
Hey Eric, I'm ordering this exact guitar, thanks largely to this super informative review... just wondering if you had a recommendation for a pickup that would work well with the D-140? From past experience I'm not the biggest fan of piezos, but I'm open to any suggestion - thank you :)
Yay! It’s a great workhorse!
I’m with you on pickups on acoustics - never like em.
My buddy had a cheap dean markley soundhole pickup that was ok
I was in the music store to see for the Yamaha FG830 SB. they didn't have it and I had to wait for 6 weeks if I should buy it, but my eye fell on this beautiful guitar. I took it out of the rack and played it and oooooh what a sound. I was branded on Yamaha but that fell into pieces with this sound I was longing for so long on a beautiful Guild D-140. that sound, the clarity and sustain wow, I got to have it. Sorry, Yamaha no offense. Other times maybe.
I love Yamahas too! Those old FGs sound so good!
Could you please tell me the name of the tune you first played at the start of the video?
Oh yeah I forgot to mention it - Cat Stevens "On The Road To Find Out" - great tune!
Hey, this sounds amazing! Do you know if you got yours with the pau ferro or rosewood fretboard? Thanks in advanced! These Guild imports are pretty nice. I have a Starfire II ST and it is fantastic. Competes with a much more expensive Gretsch I have.
Yeah these new Guilds are great deals!
Mine has the rosewood fretboard btw :-)
Eric Haugen do you mind me asking what brand strings and gauge you have on it?
I switched out the factory 12s with d'addario coated 11s - it plays pretty dang easy now!
@@EricHaugenGuitar do you have any opinion on what string gauge would be good on this guitar for tunning down a half step to e flat? Thanks. Nice playing by the way!
I think you'd be fine with the 12s that come with it!
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the heavy bottom string that some folks like - too unbalanced for me
Were you able to find this locally, or on the web? Congrats on your new guitar Eric! - another Eric.
That guitar sounds great Eric , is it comped or did you by it ? Why dont you demonstrate a B&G little sister cross roads ? Great sounding guitar !
I reached out to the nice folks at Guild, told them my deal - that I have 2 Guilds already, a UA-cam channel , Berklee degree, plus all my other “professional” accomplishments. They were cool with letting me have this one as long as I use it on the channel - which I most certainly will!
You shouldn't even have to ask , as good as you are they should be calling you ! I have looked at the Guild semi-hollow body but still looking.
Eric Haugen reach out to Gibson and offer to resuscitate them if they let you have a Byrdland
Those new Starfires are dang pretty!
Ha ha ha!
I feel really bad for the Gibson employees. I hope someone can swoop in and buy the name so all those people can keep working. They shouldn't have to suffer for upper management's dumb dumb decisions :-)
Hey, nice job man! I'm wondering about D-140 (nat) or D-150... For rock and folk strumming, what do u recommend? Thank you!
I think you'd be fine either way - the D-150 might be a little darker due to the rosewood, or maybe the opposite I dunno :-)
One is mahogany sides (soft wood) and the other rosewood (harder) - I'm not exactly sure what difference that has on tone or if I'd even notice!
@@EricHaugenGuitar thank you sir!
I love how hounst this guy is,he’s one of the best guitar players here on UA-cam so talented
What,s your tunimg on the video please?
Have you Gotten a chance to play a 40 versus a 140 yet? I am curious which one has more volume from the sound hole. Thanks
This guitar plays percussion and steel too!? 🤯
What was that last tune you played?
Ah yes I forgot about that one - it's John Prine's "Fish and Whistle." Great song!
Sounds and looks great. How would you describe the playability / action / feel?
The action was a little high when it arrived, but after a setup with 11s it's quite comfortable now!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thank you so much. That's exactly the feedback I was looking for.
on the road to find out - cat stevens
can you do a video with the new guild d40 for comparison please? (not traditional, just the usa model in satin. I love the sound of this made in china guild, was just wondering what sound you get for a bit more bucks :] cheers
Yeah I should do that!
That would be interesting
Following...
Happy New guitar day.... perhaps some Elliot Smith songs / lessons would sound good on that guitar?
Good idea!
I've gotta do some Nick Drake/Elliott Smith stuff. Such brilliant composers - so masterfully tragic!
Is that a new one, or an older one? Current production seems to have red in the burst. I prefer yours that doesn' t have the red.
It's brand new - 2018 model. You're right - on the website it looks more red.
Nice guitar!
Excellent Review!

Thanks Virgil!
Hey Eric ! Couple Q.s
What style bracing is on the top ?
How old is it ?
Sounds amazingly open, warm, & deep. I'm super happy for ya ! In 1982 I sacrificed my D-40 for a Fender Precision Bass. I'm never gonna be the same...
Got a 10yr old HD-28 now & still pine for my Guild.
This is one of the 2018 models. It does indeed sound amazingly full and open for a new guitar!
Here's the specs, I believe it's X bracing on the top: guildguitars.com/g/westerly-d-140-sb/
Eric -
Went with the Guild D140e and left the Taylor.
Bone nut and bridge added and set up with Elexir Nanoweb Light Gauge strings.
Has a great tone.
Still haven’t plugged it in, except for when the tech tested it.
Thank you for your review!
Oooooh congrats!
Now I wanna have my tech upgrade the bridge and saddle on mine - I bet it sounds killer!
Eric Haugen
It does.

Hrmmm I haven’t had the chance!
what strings and gauge on this? What flat pick and thickness? Sounds balanced, woody with very good bottom end/bass. somewhat Martin sounding.
D'addario 11s with a 1mm dunlop pick - easy to play, sounds loud enough :-)

Thanks! I'm loving this Guild :-)
HI ERIC IS THAT A FULLSIZE DREADNOUGHT?
Yup! Loud and clear!
Tempted to get this only I'm left handed. I have a really good luthier who has converted a right hander for me in the past. I notice this guitar has scalloped braces. Would that make a left handed conversion sound wrong?
Hrmmm honestly I don't know!
