to be very honest only a section of whole corridor of kanpur metro is opened and people are passing judgement only on the basis of 9 km priority section .........just wait for the line to be completed ,the route chosen by upmrc is actually the most crowded route of kanpur and will surely attract people ,bcuz everyone needs better and comfortable transportation ........and the speed at which upmrc is building kanpur metro is really commendable .

The problem I see with building metros in any Tier-2 or Tier-3 city of importance is that a Metro network requires humongous initial capital which is mostly drawn through borrowings. If the city in discussion already suffers from poor urban planning, then pouring such huge capital into metro project will only scarce the resources for other PWD needs, like bus services, roads, pedestrian friendly paths, traffic management etc as Metro becomes the highlight for that city and politicians wants to focus more on that.
Even after commencing operation, Metro network still needs huge capital to function at a subsidized price for years to come that will always squeeze city funds. Yes, new avenues for earnings can be made but even that would only work when the footfalls increases.
This issue isn't only limited to small cities, Metro isn't the answer to fix Bengaluru poor road conditions or urban planning.
If a city can be projected to grow that would need a Metro Network within a decade or two, then Metro Network can be a good idea but rapid building metro projects with little or no vision on is the city's growth and metro's role in its future is just a waste of resource that could have been otherwise used for roads and urban planning.

Delhi Metro owes its sustenance, mainly because of the University crowd coming from as far away as Dhola Kuan & Janak puri as they have no other dependable alternative. The horrendous & notorious bus transport is the only other choice. Office goers joined later followed by daily traders running their shops. A Metro needs to be popularised, after the prospective clientele (I mean those who can afford the ride) choose to patronise it. All this needs a thorough study, before the Metro is taken up for a city. Also it can wait a year at the most without profits (not breaking "even"), but not for a decade or more (that means it isn't viable) as someone pointed out above. A city (& its activities) must grow to deserve a Metro.

You are adamant & don't want to see hard facts (losses most Metros in small cities face). In the days to come, some Metros will be there for namesake, unable to make up the year on year losses & depleted staff (retrenched) &. for the sake of GDP some become jobless. In fact in many such cities the ordinary daily wager for who it is meant it is unaffordable (like Rs.50 per trip). You don't want to know these facts.

It connects Railway Station, Airport, MG Road, Rajwada(City Center & Tourist Attraction), Vijay Nagar, Super Corridor in a circular manner which no other metro does in the India. It will be game changer for Indore. As it will reduce 60% of Emission in the city.

As an Indori, I agree with the fact that metro surely helps in decongesting traffic and also, developing new areas in the city. But yes, it is also true that metro should be built only in the areas which are subsceptible to heavy traffic. But In India, it is hard to introduce alternate public transport medium such as trams or BRTS. It is because... The roads have to be made private vehicle free. People will be only incentivised to use public transport if they find public transport more convenient, faster etc than Private Transport.
But there is also another truth that single use zoning breeds a car centric society.
    Whereas
Mixed use zoning breeds a transit oriented society.
I believe that 25 - 75 mix of both are needed in our cities. And also... Some PURELY residential area should be disincentivised.
Our Rajwada was truly awesome before cars arrived. As of now, Rajwada is literally place to visit in Indore due to congestion. I hope metro brings some changes in the scene. Great video anyway!!

Jaipur metro's small phase has been constructed first rather than main phase that's why it's not attracting people.

This is really insightful. So watched a video a few months back about "why the northeast will never get a metro" and one of the reasons was population density. Then this year I heard the news about Bhubaneswar metro. I travel to Bhubaneswar every year and in the memory of that moment, I felt that Bhubaneswar does not need a metro as the city is comparatively small and the population is less. I am in Bhubaneswar right now. And to be honest this is a very fast-developing city. And I could see crowds and traffic(though less) in the city. At this moment this thought struck me that yes. Maybe right now Bhubaneswar does not need a metro but at the current pace of development, it will after 5 years. So, to cater to the public in maybe 2028, the construction needs to start now.
Being from Kolkata, I can see that building a metro system right now in Bhubaneswar will benefit the city hugely, as the Kolkata metro is the slowest in terms of construction. The Kolkata metro misses deadline after deadline. Like a part of the 4th line was supposed to open in October but there is no news about it anymore. Same, recently heard that the 5th line of Kolkata will open before March 2024 but only for 2 stations. This just seems like a tactic to please voters before the upcoming elections. If this is the state of the construction of the metro I feel really bad as a regular user at it is very much required for office goers travelling from far away places.
The orange line of Kolkata connects the north and south parts of Kolkata will the IT hub of Kolkata, if this line completes, we can expect an IT hub in Kolkata similar to Hyderabad or Pune. But this may well take longer than 2030 to complete as I am sure they will miss the 2027 deadline for the completion of the entire orange line.

While I appreciate the effort you put into researching and presenting your analysis, there seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the population figures of Bhubaneswar and the surrounding areas. As an Odia residing in the area, I would like to provide some updated information to offer a more accurate perspective.
The official data might indicate a population of 12 lakhs, but the ground reality is that the population of Bhubaneswar has significantly increased since then. The city, along with its surrounding areas such as Khurda and Jatni, easily surpasses the 30-lakh mark. Additionally, when considering the population of Cuttack and its urban areas, the overall figure is substantially higher than what was presented in your analysis.
It's crucial to note that Bhubaneswar and Cuttack serve as major hubs for the entire region, impacting a much larger population than suggested by the data you referenced. The local transit system, especially MO BUS, is a clear indication of the growing demand for efficient transportation in the area, with buses frequently reaching full capacity.
Moreover, the logic that a metro should come to an area if the population density is ten lakh per square kilometer is somewhat misguided and oversimplified. Population density alone does not determine the necessity or success of a metro system. Factors such as urban planning, traffic congestion, economic development, and the capacity of existing transportation systems play a crucial role in making such decisions.
As an Odia, I firmly believe that Bhubaneswar needs a metro system to address the increasing transportation needs of the growing population. The success of metro systems in other state capitals reinforces the necessity of such infrastructure for a smoother urban living experience.
I hope this information provides a more accurate and nuanced perspective on the situation. I would be happy to discuss this further and collaborate on content that sheds light on the positive aspects and potential success of the Bhubaneswar Metro.

With the rush across the country (of the 29 states, about 20 capitals have no running Metro now)for more & more Metros, certain norms should be laid down by the Centre. Every new Metro (almost all) can't break even to profits for at least two years. It acts as a drag in giving Metros to new cities, but is essential. Living in Kanpur, I would like to cite 3 reasons for not using Metro-
    1) Few stations are not at Proper places. Eg. Rawatpur Station is neither closed to Rawatpur Station or Rawatpur crossing (people prefer tempo instead as they are always available on these places as these are busy areas like crossroads, Malls nearby etc.)
    2) Metro is neither a first mile nor a last mile connectivity system as of now. So you have to catch an auto/tempo/cab/bus, then ride a metro, catch a cab again.
    3) Routes are not proper until new infra is built. Metro is not helping people to reach Offices/Colleges, it is connecting two dots. Eg. People travel Ramadevi to Kalyanpur, Mandhna (GT Road), JK to Phoolbagh/Bada Chauraha and they buy flats accordingly as there are enroute offices, malls. Metro is not parallel to these existing routes.

Delhi Metro was planned, constructed, the men recruited & adjacent infrastructure developed by a (your "some") governtme(n)t officer only; his name is E. Sreedharan who graduated in Engineering from Kakinada (yes, it is in India) way back in 1950s). There are many such GOVERNMENT OFFICERS (another bigger personality was Verghese Kurian to whom we owe the supply of daily milk packets). These eminent citizens of India (at least these two) deserve Bharat Ratna. You must know them before commenting as an Indian citizen, with a sweeping statement that you must have learnt from some politician.

Viewed from today's Metro they are ancient. But they served well at least half a dozen generations well. So people say thanks to them.
Culture of the denizens there is one we need to emulate like Lee Kuan Yu, the first PM of Singapore who made Singapore what it is now. During the war (WW II) amidst all that bombing on London, he lived there. One ascends the steps from underground (Metro that they call it "tube"), to reach street level. He used to see a neat pile of daily newspapers on the parapet, with a tin box by the side. Everyone (desiring to read the days' news) used to pick one copy & drop its price as change, in the box next. There was none to supervise & none steals the money collected. He (Lee Kuan Yu) decided then & took an oath, "I'll make Singapore like this (a city of responsible citizens)". And he did it.
