- Venice, a city deserted. Filming while wearing protective masks, filming in a northern Italy that has been devastated by the coronavirus.
Markus Frings and Marco Polo, both from South Tyrol, needed special permission to travel through northern Italy. They wore masks and gloves to protect themselves from the virus. They filmed checkpoints and nighttime disinfection crews cleaning the streets. They talked to virologists, local business people and of course the residents themselves.
Cameraman Marco shows us how his family in Bolzano has come to terms with these exceptional times of closed schools and restricted movement. And we learn that many Italians appear to have adjusted to this most abnormal of new normalities.

We are not the most welcoming, we are a country full of double face bastards. Italy is An old country full of only old people because change is not welcome here. Kids complain about schools when they have schools to go to. Now I believe they appreciate their time at schools. They want to know when they can go back to schools to play and meet friends again. Bawling watching this. I don't know why. Maybe because I remember a lively Venice when I visited in 2017. An amazing experience, a gorgeous city bustling with locals and tourists. And now a ghost town. Sigh, the impact of COVID-19 is incredible. God bless the people of Italy, you will get through this! Stay strong and safe. See you once this is over.
The clearer water of Venice's canals should make us rethinking our future.
I don't see money in the clear water.
Its just because there are no boats atm.
Venice is a luxury swamp
I ONLY SEE POLLUTION IN canal!
Before or after the sea will swallow that swamp. Just an idiot would build a city in a place like that
How come nearly no one in this seems to know how to wear a mask correctly? If you stick you nose out you might as well not wear a mask at all... even the presenter guy at times has his nose out.
I am glad they got some video out so the rest of the world can get a sense of how things are there, I grew up largely in Italy and lived for a time in the north and have many friends there. But it's very different to see with you own eyes how things are there. The obituaries on every second page of the newspaper were really saddening.
As I read this a guy walking past with nose hanging out
Masks won't save you.
Masks do not do anything to keep you from getting an airborne virus.
However they do keep you from giving the virus to somebody if you have it.
@Nomadic Zak As soon as they told me don't touch your face I'm like.... I'm dead.
Cause I know I always touch my face.

These are very difficult times but even with a great loss of life and economy in shambles things will bounce back better than ever before. Mass tourism may be a thing of the past so countries like Italy will need to refocus on developing other industries to make their country stronger than before. For all their people, not just a select few.

@@user-hs6uw9lr2v tourists will be local less dependent on other nations our life will be hard but less globalized is better
@Seb BaI was planning on visiting Rome for the first time this year but I hated the idea of doing the tourist thing and I wanted to mix with the locals. I missed my chance and it doesn't look like I'll be able to visit anytime soon but I'm ok with it. I never liked the idea of being part of mass tourism. If it's dead, I'm glad it's dead. The people of Europe need to reclaim their land and cities for themselves not to just selfish foreign tourists who have no respect for the locals ala Venice.
Seb Ba How can you build something like this? These buildings have history, that’s why people visit them. I think that is impossible to divert tourism from Italy, it’s not like any other country, you can’t just stop visiting it because architects have built nice buildings in your country, it just can’t be the same thing.
Italy is all tourism! All my family are either restaurant owners or own hotels
Great reporting
Many risky conducts can be seen on the video: In the Coffe Shop, one guy laughes over the counter (and the cups?); the masks are down the chin many times, even the filming crew makes this mistake. This is why people get the virus: Lack of attention to those details. These are very exceptional times, and even if this sounds exaggerated, it is the truth. Please, let's stay healthy and take this seriously. Thanks a lot for telling the world what's going on there.
I noticed that as well, at 8:04 the guy had it covering his mouth, and not his nose, which concerned me a bit...
