- We tried traditional Malay kuih which is Malaysia's version of cake and dessert.
It was recommended by many of our subscribers to try these types of kuih after we posted a video of us trying kuih raya for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri.
On this video we tried:
1. Kuih wajik
2. Kuih sagu
3. Kuih seri muka
4. Pulut panggang
5. Kuih ketayap
6. Kuih lapis
7. Karipap (curry puff)
We know that there are many more types available and we want to try them all since we love Malaysian food!
We hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching!

💕
All of them...hahahah...that sticky rice umph!!!!
Coconut floss for pulut panggang
Apam balik, char kueh, onde-onde, vadai, pakora, pisang goreng, ubi keledek goreng, cempedak goreng, keropok lekor, popiah, cucur udang, cekodok pisang & many many many more yummylicious snacks
The bright pink dessert is made from tapioca pearls. Not soy product. Tapioca is "ubi" or scientific name: "Manihot esculentum"; other names are cassava, yuca... We also eat the shoots (young leafs) as vegetable. Or even as salad eaten with sambal... The kuih lapis - the bright pink one is rose flavoured, not strawberry.
I love tepung pelita, popia basah 🤤🤤
Every travellers that come to Malaysia will end up being food vloggers 😂
Betul... Ha3x
Agreed....
The mat salleh guy is annoying siotttt.....nasib baik dia ada awek Indon ni yg explain....aku x boleh brain la mamat ni
That true, mate
@@nurdianarahim4468 you don't expect her to leave him just because you can't stand him, do you?
Kuih that you ate usually eaten during breakfast or for tea...but for kuih raya is all cookies that you ate during hari raya...generally kuih means snacks for us Malaysian
ah got it! Thanks for the clarification!
also since we celebrate Raya for a month, all kuih raya (cookies) last longer, while the one that you eat kinda serve like daily dessert. You should try different kind of kerepek too.
When you peel off that kuih lapis, it reminds me of what I used to do when I was a kid back in the 80s
Hahaha..include me..it's like something that could make us addicted to peel of
Haha...did that too!!
thats me
I think this is the best kuih review i've seen by a tourist on youtube. You got most of the popular kuihs and correct names. And it seems like you got good quality ones too.
Of the lot, wajik is the most time consuming to prepare. Simple ingredients of glutinous rice (beras pulut), coconut milk (santan), brown sugar (gula merah) or palm sugar (gula melaka/kabong) or both n salt to taste. The cooking is the hard part. Over slow heat to reduce the coconut milk from a fluid to the consistency that you see in the video. You have to keep stirring to not burn. Takes hours
These are only about 5% of kuih we have in Malaysia.. You need to stay longer & travel to all the states here to experience the other 95%.. Hahaha
so true! Hope we can stay longer!
@Bouya hehe you r right
@RC hehe mngkn betul
@@JetLagWarriors hope your visa will be extended. Cuz just now PM announce CMCO will end on 9th, and replace by RMCO, recovery mco. And interstate travel will be allow and domestic travel also will be allow. So you guys can travel within malaysia. Theres still a lot more places you need to explore in malaysia. To experience culture and our food.
Right
We tried kuih seri muka for the first time a few weeks ago - really tasty!
it’s very unique!! sweet on top and savoury on the bottom. Amazing flavours and textures!
@@JetLagWarriors bottom have savory lemaky taste
Seri muka translate in English is face glow , you dont need botox if you eat seri muka
Semunggil Ulasbibir wowwww😍✨✨
We Malaysians pride ourselves with these kueh. The unique thing about this is its Malay with a mix of Nyonya (Straits Chinese) and Indian flavours. Truly Malaysian delights!
yeah.. theres a WHOLE LOT more kuih u need to try.. every state have their own unique sort of kuih especially kelantan
Their name also quite unique.
I feel like Steve is an expert for sweet treats while Ivana is the cooking expert 😂
Hah! Ivana keeps telling me to do some baking videos!! When Ivana sees this she's gonna tell me again, even though I have no idea how to bake!! lol
@@JetLagWarriors sometimes not having the skills to bake doesn't necessarily mean you're not an expert Steve! Hahaha have a good one, stay safe wherever you are! Enjoyed your video as always
karipap always nice to eat hot from the frying .. with black coffee or non milk tea..
mohd shahrizzal Karipap is Malaysian version of ‘curry puff’. Hence the similar sound.
Kuih raya can be biscuits, cookies and so on. However because they r most probably easily to get during ramadhan for Raya celebration. Therefore we call them kuih raya.
These one are more usually kuih we consume during breakfast and sometime tea time. U can easily get them daily in the morning at street stalls near to ur living place.
Love how colorful kuih can be!
When I was small, I loved to eat the kuih lapis layer by layer! In the end, it is called lapis which means layer 😂 well the adults usually eat it in one go
I still eat it layer by layer now in my early twenties 😆
haha it’s fun to eat!!
Hahaha a true gentleman abang2 like people would eat it whole with a cup of tea in the other hand during moreh
Man. Kamaruddin ikr 😂😂
Hahahaha i tot im the only one who eat the kuih lapis that way lol!
Always enjoy watching your vid. .. keep it coming.. love you both.
OMG ..I'm drooling here...those were my favorites kuih...yummmm..good pick guys
I have never seen a couple so excited about food like you guys! You make everything looks delicious!
They are a joy to watch. Genuine and respectful and honest ❤❤
They all look delicious. Glad you took the plate away from Steve Ivana, as he was going to eat all the treats!!Steve remember to share.😉
Now i realize its entertaining to watch tourists eating and describing local foods.
Well Malaysian use the word jajan and pasar but never for one of these. We just call it kuih/kueh. Malaysian usually use 'jajan' for snacks like potato chips and other packaged foods. That asian empenadas sometimes have sardine filling which is my favourite. Try to find Tapai I think you guys would find the taste interesting. My other recommendation is Lepat pisang.
sardines on the empanadas sound amazing!!
For those looking forward to having these in the future, my advise is hop on the ETS, ride north or south, find a local morning market, and sample the kuih there. You can also try to find hawkers in the afternoon 4-7 pm ish. Ask locals. Forget about kuih in Kuala Lumpur. The authentic kuih is outside the metropolitan. It will blow your mind. Even for me 36 years of eating these kuih, still blows my mind.
Wow!!! All the kueh are my favourite.
Kuih usually refer to ‘teatime snacks’. 2 types; savoury & sweet. Mainstream flavoring ingredients for sweet kuih usually pandan, coconut & palm sugar.
yes coconut and pandan seem to be on every Malaysian dish! From rice to sweets...
I'm really enjoy the video
Wowww... Steve sudah pandai makan.
At last!!...
Everyday I'm waiting for your new video...
haha thank you✌️
pulut panggang stuffing is usually dried shrimp, coconut shaving, cili, turmeric, onion
great combinations😋
Sago is the seed from a sago palm tree... tapioca is from a different plant.
May I suggest you go look for a nyonya kuih store. And try those kuih again.. there is another green and white kuai call kuah talam. The white part is. Made from coconut milk(santan) and the green part is from daun pandan.
thanks! we will look for more kuih to try!
just to clarify, sago is not from the seeds, it’s from the starch of the sago trees..
not to be confused with palm fruit, aka buah atap, the immature fruit of sugar palm.. it is usually candied and commonly used as condiment for ais kacang
Celia Goh thanks for the correction..
All those kueh r so mouth watering. I'm glad u guys like them too.
My fav among all of that kuih is PULUT PANGGANG 😋😋😋
Glad you like it! And now I'm starving looking at this video during lockdown ughhh
Where can i get it now 😭
foodpanda??
@@JetLagWarriors haha i don't think foodpanda sell KUIH 😅
Im glad theres no air in those karipap 😆 and the skin looks so thick, i prefer the crispy one.
the crispy one would have been so much better but the ones that we tried were really good already!!
@@JetLagWarriors karipap has many type of filling. you got a potato only filling. there are a few other choices
If you happen to come to johor bahru you even find these kuih a restaurant call SEDAP CORNER that you can get the same kuih prepared with a better ingredient but it cost you alittle bit expensive compare if you buy it anywhere ourside foddstalls.
Karipap oksigen
may you both enjoy the kuihhhhhhhhhhhh
I love kuih ketayap. and it's very easy to make!!!! delish
very yummy! we want to try to make it!
ask ivana to make kuih ketayap LOL
Word Ketayap actually means, head cover
The green wrap a.k.a the ketayap, is a thin rounded green pancake before it is rolled
that looks like a male head cover (ketayap or kopiah) they use when praying
@@JetLagWarriors try this recipe. ua-cam.com/video/dQL3yuD08zs/v-deo.html
Kueh seri muka is one type of kueh we called kueh "talam" (cos its cooked/steamed in a big round tin tray/pan we call talam) there are many version of it. Some has pumpkin flavoured top, corn flavoured, even durian flavoured. Some also has grated tapioca as the bottom layer instead of sticky rice. Those are my absolute fav. These kueh talam also comes in all shades of the rainbow!!
Kuih lapis! Fun to peel off the layers
Lol...who told ya....tat ma fav .
in the old days, the Kuih Lapis was like a rainbow of colours. Blue, yellow and green too.
As a kid, I would slowly peel off layer by layer. It all taste the same sweet creamy in rice pudding. Just different colours.
Satisfaction.
Seeing you guys eating the kueh make me craving for kueh akok(Kelantan's tradisional kueh).
Your reaction is exactly like me when I first tasted this when I was kid, just whoa uhh woww mmm 😋 especially the kuih ketayap 😂
haha😋
please guys...come to east coast of peninsular malaysia..
beautiful beaches every state..
nice n superb state dishes and kuih..
you'll falling in love...
trust in me..
🥰🥰
Maybe one day! COVID messed up our travel plans, but we hope to make it there one day.
Great video. I love the pulut panggang, too. For curry puff, it tastes better when it's freshly fried. The one at IKEA tastes good, too.
If you like durian....seri muka durian and wajik durian is super delicious.
yumm durian! we love it!!
Pulut panggang is the best🇲🇾❤️
Ivana’s favourite!
..it is not pulut panggang..in Kedah we call PULUT UDANG...😋
@@remyh.9530 not all pulut panggang use udang as inti btw.
@@JetLagWarriors my no.1 favourite as well. I love spicy pulut panggang and these days, it is a bit hard to find those spicy ones.
Looks like you are in Kueh heaven 🤗🤗
Kuih ketayap is my favourite. I ate it almost every day during buka puasa (breaking fast) last Ramadan.
You should try onde-onde/buah melaka. It's a small green ball covered in coconut shaving and filled with gula melaka (hence the name). Sweet and juicy; just like ketayap, but tastier.
we will look for onde onde next!
Ivana's pronunciation of the kuih names are spot on 👍
Karipap = curry puff! tried ikea's karipap, bigger size with 1/2 hard boil egg!
Sedapnyer,nyumm nyumm
That how I eat Kuih lapis..
Layer by layer.
So much fun.. 😁
Please eat a lot and well.... this is a good review of our traditional kueh...
My fav...kuih ketayap!
For kuih lapis, you can add tapioca flour instead of using only rice flour. It makes it more elastic....
u guys really did yr own researh.
The 2nd kuih is my favourite dow!
that red one's..my favourite..sagu
Our friends frm France love those serimuka
ALL OF THOSE ARE MALAYSIAN FAVOURITE AAAA I WANT SOME
As a mlaysian..i love kuih wajik as well..glutinous rice plus brown sugar n coconut milk etc..
I love all that kueh... but missed all that as no bazar ramadhan this year 😭😭😭😭😭
The brown one is called wajik, or here we in northern region we called it pulut kacau. Its sticky rice with brown sugar.
The green&white one might be kueh talam, or seri muka if the white bottom a sticky rice.
The red one is kueh sagu if im not mistaken.
The stripe red&white we called it kueh lapis.
The middle one is karipap, or currypuff i think in english. Dont knwo if its the same thing, maybe the local version of currypuff.
The other green one is called kueh ketayap, inside coconut with brown sugar.
And the other one, the bake stick one, we called it pulut udang, at least here in northern region.
Awesome! Which one is your favorite?
@@JetLagWarriors if i had to choose. The kueh ketayap one. Or the green log/sweet bomb that you called it. Lol. Its the best.
@@repz9190 me too. having it with teh o/ kopi o panas. ohhhhh it is a wonderful world
My husband's grandfather was a Javanese from Indonesia and he loved Pulut Panggang which he called Lemper. I love that savoury pulut panggang too.
there are different versions of kuih Sago.
My favourite would be in a small banana leaf cone. The preboiled sago is placed in the piece of soft banana leaf. A line of brown sugar in the middle. The whole pack is rolled into a cone. Then, it is steamed to make the sago stick together and soften the leaf.
You can also find this in Bangkok. Last I bought it was along a street next the pier that visitors to the Grand Palace would alight.
Hey guy😆 kuih lapis my favourite
My favorites are kuih kole kacang, kuih cara berlauk, cucur badak, keria gula melaka, ondeh-ondeh, kasuie, karipap sardin, keropok lekor, cempedak goreng, pisang goreng,
Jajan is snacks, pasar is market. Market snacks as in snacks bought from market. So basically the same things.
Jajan is a Javanese slang word used in some parts of peninsular Malaysia, usually you can hear the word being used in selangor, johor, perak & negeri sembilan, where malays of Javanese descent mostly reside
Kuih lapis is kids😂😂 favoret is just fun to eat it just sweet children love it..
Ivana,if ur fav is kuih sagu,u should try "sagu gula melaka"..u will love it!👍👍
Kuih ketayap my favorite.
You guys should try sagu gula melaka which is sagu in coconut milk and it’s easy to make at home!
sounds yummy!!😋
Never cross in mind to enjoy the kuih lapis the way you did....layer by layer😂😂😂

Hey i need to tell u guys that i've been viewing all of your vlog for the past week,n yesterday i've dreaming in my sleep steve came in to me and ask for a raya visit to my house. Hahahahahahahaah. What r u doing in my dream steveeeeee??
sago is made frm the corky core of the sago/rumbia tree trunk which first processed into flour then into the pearls (i don't know the process exactly), not tapioca (btw tapioca is starch that is extracted from ubi kayu (cassava))
much like how you process other kinds of starch, shavings of the sago tree trunk is washed off of the fibre first. then the starchy mixture is left to sediment out, and water is discarded through decanting. at this point, the wet starch can either get dehydrated directly to get the powdery starch or rolled into beads before dehydration to get sago pearls.
@@CeliaGoh thank you celia
My favorite are karipap, pulut panggang and kuih seri muka. Karipap have many versions. You should try Karipap Pusing. The skin is flaky and buttery. Yummy
All this kueh is best made by the nyonyas. The Baba and Nyonya descended from the entourage of the Chinese princess betrothed to the Sultan of Malacca in the 14th Century. It is the adaptation of local food made fit to eat for the princess.
I only watch half of the video cuz i got very hungry just by watching this. LOL.. out to get some food now.
Love the reaction 😄 kuih (desserts) we usually have it in the morning or in the evening as light meal (or while having hot tea). There is a lot of type of kuih in Malaysia.. some you may like it, and some may not. All you have to do is try 😁

Ivana's pronunciation for every kuih name is so good. Even better than some Malaysians😂
Steve sneakily gave Ivana half of the pulut panggang and reached for the other one. But Ivana caught on to his schemes and instantly snatched the other half of the other pulut panggang thus thwarting Steve's attempt to eat one and half by himself.
Dang, you caught my whole scheme and trick. I plead guilty
My fv is kuih sri muka and karipap
Must try ikea Malaysia curry puff,is the best to me
Curry puff is also known as epok epok.
Kuih ketayap is kuih dadar to Singaporean malays.
Serimuka is Putri Salad
Kuih Lapis is Kuih Genggang to old Johorians. Just sharing what I know....😍
putri salad = salad (as in veggies) princess?
Sorry it’s salat not salad. Lol
Check it out on Google
When i was child I like to eat kuih lapis layer by layer, i called it kuih bendera bcos it looked like malaysian flag hehe
am I a monster to just eat it without peeling it?
lapar weh
Suggest to try the onde-onde nyonya kueh if you get to try another round of desserts. It's my fave!
Please try Ondeh ondeh..... maybe you will shuffle your list after trying that. 😀👍
The kuih sagu is pretty delicious when you chilled it in refrigerator first 😄😁 eat it in hot weather, such a delicious and heaven treat
If u like kuih sagu u have to try sagu gula melaka, its a dessert very famous in malaysia especially during ramadhan
Sedap siot wajik.. Lama dah tak makan.. Dulu arwah nenek slalu buat.. T_T
Mostly kuih for breakfast or evening.. all the kuih u selected are the the best here.. well my top 3.. kariipap.. few selections.. sardine.chicken or eggs etc.. everybody can make karipap so the taste are different.. if I managed to get a good karipap 10 just me alone.. seri muka is always a must buy kuih..and ketayap wow wow.. if u lucky to eat the perfect textures of ketayap then its your lucky day.. haha.. not all selling delicious kuih.. some just ok.. ok for me.. best for u guys... kikiki... good job for the kuih selections again.. surprised myself cos all of the kuih are my favorites too..I eat kuih every morning ok... eat more..ur in Malaysia..
