- Shows process & charge from 56% to 80%. Turns out this particular station NFC/RFID reader wasn't working - so had to use the app.
*EDIT* Oops, just realized the typo on the video title, it should be BMW i4 M50 ... not M5. :)

That Autumn feel and the colour of the car looks so nice
Thank you so much; glad you like it! Do you have one yourself?
Thank you for this. I, too, am about to head on out to charge at an Electrify America charging station for the first time today, and you have removed my anxiety!
Hi there @stevenweiss7129, glad to hear you found the video useful! Do you also have an i4? How long have had it and what do you think so far?
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW I have had the car for a little over a week and I love it! And I appreciated how you were brave enough to do a video on your first attempt to use the charger so it was organic and spontaneous.
@stevenweiss7129, I’m so glad to hear you love your i4! What color combo did you get? And thanks for the positive comment about the video; I sometimes feel my videos don’t have the production polish as many others on UA-cam. But I hope they are helpful.
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW Sorry for my delayed responses. I typically only look at UA-cam once a week. I got the Tanzanite Blue with a black interior. I have not yet charged at a public station and had a bad experience the first time I tried at multiple places, but I’ll figure it all out. Love the car and am pleased with the e40. I didn’t need the extra horses or the extra 10K plus in price!
@stevenweiss7129 oh, that color combo sounds gorgeous, congrats! Public charging is definitely a mixed bag; luckily I have 60A(installed)/48A(to the car) EV charger at home - it charges ~about 40 miles per hour.
Great video. We just purchased our first electric vehicle the BMW iX1 M Sport and love it. Here in Italy charging away from home is a little challenging but we recently got the BMW charging card. Paying at charging stations here isn’t straightforward which is a bit of a stressor!
Hi @jimmyvespegolf3834! Thanks for checking out the video! Congratulations on your 1X; it’s a great vehicle!! What color combo did you get? How are finding the range vs BMWs advertised numbers?
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW The range on a full charge is around 390 km but the max range is about 415 km. We got Space Silver!
@@jimmyvespegolf3834 that’s a very usable range! That’s a gorgeous color too! Congratulations!!
Thanks for your good video about EA. I live in the Bay Area and two weeks ago i sold my Model S and bought an i4 edrive40. Certainly loving the driving experience! I can trickle charge in my garage, so not much need for EA charging yet. I have signed up for EA and installed the app so i am ready (I think....) Sometime in the next month or so will drive to the EA location 20 miles North from here and check it out. Thanks for the preview.
Hi Wilber! Glad you found it useful! This was my first experience using EA - it's really pretty easy once you know how. One thing to know, your dealer should have given you a code for 2yrs free charging at Electrify America; make sure you set that up. What color is your i4? I'm sure you're loving it over your Model S.
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW Yep, BMW sent me the email with the code and i used that in creating my EA account so will get that 2 years of free charging. I also reactivated my Chargepoint account so i can use Chargepoint and EVGo chargers. I have started participating in the i4talk forum. are you over there? My i4 is just the basic one White with Black interior. only extra is the Prem package for heated seats and steering wheel. I was able to purchase this car because the person who ordered it a year ago declined to take delivery. So, i snapped it up - but had to pay $3k over MSRP.
@@wilber8260 ah great to hear you’re all set up with EA! I have a Tesla fast wall charger I’m using at home, with a lectron adapter- works no issues. I haven’t signed up for the i4talk forum - I should do.
The blue looks nice on this car. Thinking of getting one in the green with the same interior color that you have.
Hello! Thanks for commenting! That sounds like a gorgeous color combination; go for it! What car would you be moving from?
Good video. I just bought the ix50 (big brother of the i4😊) and had some similar experiences with Electrify America. A bit of confusion about whether or not to use the MyBMW app or the EA, but recommended is to use the MyBMW app. Also, I initially was not able to charge because I tried to sign in at the charging station as a “guest” vs a “member”….just thought I was a guest and they kept asking for my credit card. Then BMW app suddenly stopped recognizing my verification code/VIN and had to get the BMW Genius guys to completely reload all my info which took a couple days.
Still a bit of pain and confusion just to get started, but now feel much more comfortable w my charging experience and loving the idea that I charge for free for 2 years and will never have to buy gas again.
My only other gripe is that where I reside, the EA stations can get a bit crowded and there’s always that one individual that just lets their car sit their for hours while they shop or have dinner. So annoying and disrespectful.
Hi @swisstrader, congrats on your purchase, the iX is also stunning; I hope you’re loving it! What color combo did you get? I use the EA app instead of the myBMW app for EA charging; what are the benefits of using the myBMW instead? I have had really missed experiences with EA charges - on a road trip earlier this year, I’d estimate 50% of the EA chargers I tried to stop at were out of order; I ended up getting home with only 7 miles of charge remaining! 😮
Mine's in California (I'm in Oregon) but small problem with the software so not on the truck yet but I ordered mine in August 2021 so the wait is nearly over. I'm getting the exact same color combination as well. Portimao Blue metallic with cognac interior with carbon fiber trim. P.S. LOL at the contortions of the wheel with that camera haha.
Hi aneebaba06! Thanks for commenting!! I *LOVE* this color combo - I'm confident you will too! I had read about some cars stuck waiting a software update; sorry to hear that yours is one of those waiting on the update. But, the wait is oh-so worth it! And yeah, lol at the steering wheel shape! I'll need to change the gopro wide angle settings for future videos. Remember to have your BMW sales guy to set up Electrify America free pass for you. ;)
Love your car man! Gorgeous colour combination! My own (San Remo) due to be delivered next week.
Some trivial questions:
Is it possible to turn off the ‘open/lock’ chirrup? I do some very early starts and can see that being unpopular. Do you have comfort access?
From the video I couldn’t see the charge rate on the machine, although I was able to see it on your dash. Charge rate varies (as I understand, from Bjiørn Nylands videos) on the current charge state of the battery, and crucially whether it was preconditioned prior to charge. As you used Sat Nav to get to the charge station I figure you already know this (!) as the navigation also triggers the preconditioning.
What is the meaning of the colour coding of the LED in the charge flap?
I’ve no idea whether BMW UK offer a similar free charge scheme - I think at the moment it’s perhaps not.
Hey there! Thank you so much! The Portimao Blue looks even better in person to be honest. And on the cognac interior! Just stunning, I love it. Congratulations on your car - I think you're gonna love it. I came from a Tesla Model 3 Perf - and the Tesla feels like a toy car in comparison. I have comfort access - so can access/unlock using my phone/watch, plus key - I've not looked into switching off the chirrup noise; it's definitely loud. Actually, I just downloaded Drivers Guide App on my iPad - and looked up the car manual, and yes, you can turn the chirrup noise off. The color of leds on the charge indicates the charging state - whether the car is charging, and whether it's reached full charge state. You can access that from the BMW app as well.
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW You have excellent taste! Well jel on the cognac - I wanted this but wasn’t an available option in Vernasca with SanRemo at the time of ordering. Thanks so much for your reply. I have quite a bit to learn with this car I think.
@@grahamsalmons2027 Thank you!! Same here to be honest - so much to learn. I was thinking I might record a video of some of the in car menus and options - there is so much there.
Yes you can switch off those sounds, the max charging speed is 200kW which you get when you out the charger into the navigation system to precondition the battery. White means you just plugged in, orange light happens during handshake, blue during charging, green when it hit the preset limit, and red if something went wrong.
@@markuserbeldinger9674 oh, great info, thank you!! Good to know about the pre-conditioning - I've not had reason yet to do a long road trip where I've needed to charge on the way. Maybe sometime in February I can try that.
Great video! I ordered my M50 (Brooklyn Grey and Cognac interior) and it should arrive in May.
Hi there, thanks for stopping by! Nice color combo! Remember to get your BMW SA to sign you up for Electrify America free charging. Let me know what you think of the car when you take delivery; I’m sure you’re going to love it!
@@FlyingScotsmanPNW The sales person mentioned about the BMW card regarding charging but I don’t remember the details. I don’t know anything about free charging in Europe. BMW website mentions a “year of free monthly payments”
Your car looks absolutely amazing in this paint job.
@@fredymon oh, my bad, I assumed you were in the US. Sorry! I’m not sure what offers, if any, BMW UK are doing. Here in the US, we get 2yrs of free charging at a high speed charging network.
@@fredymon thanks!!
I could not link my BMW i4 E40 to the EA offer for free charging. Which isn't that too much of an issue since there are no EA chargers anywhere within 40 miles of where I live.
Have an edrive40. Same EA deal. Beautiful car. Love it. Wish I could say the same of EA. You would imagine they use this 2 year deal to lure you in, after these two years are done. It's the opposite. After not even a month I know EA won't be charging my i4 in 23 months. Availability, reliability and charging speeds are just awefull
@marcelb7466, congrats on your i4 what color combo do you have? I agree with your comments about EA; I’m quite disheartened with the reliability of the network. I will emit my experience with Tesla Superchargers in my Tesla M3P was far superior. Im planning a long trip soon, mostly interstate, which will require charging - I’ll share my experience.
Hi, if you decide to charge from 80% to 100%, could you let me know how long it would take? Thanks for the video.
Hi there! Sorry for the delay in responding. Will do for sure. I keep my electric cars charged to the manufacturers recommendations, which for BMW is 80%. Tesla however recommended 90%. I also think going from 80 to 100% charging time is dependent on the temperature of the battery … but if they do it, I’ll be sure to let you know. Thanks for posting!
With my ix, it takes like an extra 30-40 mins. Also not recommended by BMW. They recommend 80%, so not worth it unless youre going on a long trip.
the range for the i4 M50 with 19” wheels is suppose to be 270miles @80% thats 216miles I haven’t made it past 190@80%. Do you have a goos way to extend the charging range?
Hi @jaimevaldez, typically, on my i4 M50, I see about 190 to 200 miles range at 80% charge. I found the most effective mechanism to extend that long road trips is (1) obviously charged 100%, (2) put the car in Eco pro mode, (3) drive conservatively (aka no heavy accelerator usage!) and (4) maintain a constant speed on the freeway. I also observe a noticeable increase in range while driving at 60 mph vs at 70mph
Sadly it will only charge at full speed up to 50% capacity, then past 50% it drops to 100kW and then gradually down to 50-40kW towards the end. Not worth charging past 70-80% at public stations unless you have time to spare or there are no chargers on the way.
Oh, good to know!! I’ve not done a lot of public charging yet. Need to experiment more.
I get the same car i am very happy with it it is driving very good 👍
Hi @lucthegreat5321; thanks for commenting! How are you finding the range estimate? I would love to hear what color combo you got.
Very temping to buy this car… i have a tesla model Y currently, but can’t get my eyes off of this BMW… do you think it is worth it? No regret? 😅 thinking about Brooklyn grey vs the matte blue color
Hi! I had a Tesla Model 3P before this - which other than the acceleration, I really never loved. I found the M3P to be like a toy car - cheap feeling and not well built. Plus, there were things I came to hate - like you had to do control everything via touch screen, with menu options that would change and move around (messing up muscle memory) and I disliked the handling and ride quality (I always felt it was very unsettled). I actually couldn’t wait to give it back. The BMW though - I love it. It’s in a different class altogether. It’s fast - maybe not quite as “brutal” acceleration as the M3P, but ride quality and handling are vastly better than the M3P. Sure, the BMW doesn’t have a frunk, but honestly I never used it on the M3P, and the trunk on the BMW is vast. I highly recommend test driving at your nearest BMW dealer.
Just took delivery of my M50 a few weeks ago. Probably my 7th BMW. Best car I’ve ever owned.
congratulations, and welcome to the club! Thanks for commenting! What color combo did you get? This is my 5th BMW - and I’m so happy I made the decision to give up the Tesla and return to BMW.
I had a 2020 TMY. I really enjoyed the car. When mine was totaled, I decided to look around. I bought my i4, not the M4, and have zero regrets. Much less phantom energy loss on the BMW, whereas everything seemed to drain the battery on the TMY. Some things I miss, such as the auto-open charging port. Other things I don’t, such as the rattle and harsh ride.
@@tmcquitty hi there, welcome and thanks for commenting! I also have zero regrets about giving up on my model three performance. The ride quality and interior fit and finish are so much better than the Tesla. The more I drive the BMW, the more I come to appreciate it over the Tesla. I’m understanding the range estimates on the M50 better now - I got about 240 miles in a recent road trip. What color combo did you buy?
Charging is not 30 minutes per day but per session. Enjoy your car
Hi @HenryM, thanks for watching a posting. Yeah you’re exactly right, I realized that later. When I looked into it, it’s actually 30mins charging every 60mins per day. Did you buy an i4?
You should make more pov drive
Hi @amine, thank you!! It’s been a while because, well, life. Request heard and received - I’ll look for more opportunities in the future.
Nice video, but your camera setting makes me dizzy. Couldn't watch your video more than 2:43. I myself have ordered (i4 M50) 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed the video; but sorry to hear the camera settings made you dizzy. I realized afterwards I should have changed settings. Excited to hear you bought an i4 M50 - what color combo did you order?
Love the Tesla and the Charging Network...but the interior of the cars is so bad. Seriously considering the i4 instead. 95% of my driving is local and I wouldn't need the charging network. Electrify America network is very small here in Virginia, but i'm assuming it would grow over the next few years.
Hi @mikeshumate1840, thanks for stopping by! 9 months in, and I'm loving the i4 M50 - huge step up from the Tesla; I'm reminded of that every time I sit in the i4. We have a reasonable EA charging network in WA - but honestly, I've had a mixed experience with them (last road trip, many chargers offline). That said, like you, 95% of my driving is local - so I just keep topped up with my L2 home charger. Actually, I'm using the Tesla wall charger, with an NACS -> J1772 adapter ;)
I have within about 20 miles 4 EA locations. About 25 chargers I guess. Decently working, maybe between 10 and 15 at best. So really maybe half. Sometimes a bit more , sometimes a bit less. Not nearly enough. Got to charge those hours when people are not up and running yet. Never owned a tesla but was passenger. I always feel like I am sitting in a cheap Ikea room.....
Hi @marcelb7466, here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a pretty EA network around the greater metropolitan Seattle area; where I find it lacking (weirdly) is the i5 corridor between Seattle and Portland - there’s a really long stretch with no chargers. The first time I took a road trip down to the Portland area, on the return trip home, only ~50% of chargers were working, with long queue times - I ended up getting home with only 7 miles charge remaining. It was worrying to say the least. The Tesla Supercharger network is way more comprehensive in my experience.
