SOLVING ECO EARTH PROBLEMS!

- Unfortunately sometimes no matter how long you leave it out, Eco Earth (or any other compressed coconut fibre substrate) will lock in a certain amount of moisture, but once it meets the heat mat it turns your gecko's tank into a massive humid hide. This is certainly not good for Leopard Geckos, so here's what I do to tackle this problem.

Can you please make a video of your cleaning routine? Like what you do in between changing out the entire eco earth batches. Do you take out everything weekly and sanitize it all, or just spot clean the poop and mostly leave it until you change the eco earth every 6 months? It seems like a long time to not thoroughly clean things.
My leopard gecko appreciates you
I've been using Repticarpet for 3 years. I've got the warm side of the tank covered in slate tile. It warms up quite nicely. I just remodeled my tank today and bought the dry coconut husk eco earth (in bag) and I gotta say, working great so far. Even lowered the humidity a bit. The carpet was gross and it is very hard to clean.
I had carpet for only 2 weeks I quickly switched after because it smelled terrible
Oh thank heck for this vid 🙏🏼 I was freaking out when my viv got like this
Here comes The Great Substrate Debate: see comments for details...
About that
Hi! Love your videos❤️ So I'm getting a leopard gecko soon, and I just want to make sure, the Eco Earth should be bone dry for them? Just wanted to be sure because I'm not 100% sure.😊
So I’m thinking that I’ll make the eco Earth a day before I clean the gecko out so it can dry?
Can you make a second part for crested geckos? My eco earth is almost flooded I only spray it down 2 times a day. I have around 2-3 inches of it
Have you done anything with the leo natural set up/ the rocks you collected? I'd love to see what you do. I'm setting one up too.
Do you ever think about making a planted Leo vivarium?
I'm thinking of getting a leopard gecko and I want to use eco earth. I live in Arizona if I make up the eco earth and it's still wet could I put it outside to dry faster?
I know this is an old video, but where did you buy does rocks
I have the same problem but with a crested gecko which has to be sprayed on a daily basis and I don't think that will allow the soil to dry out :/ any tips ?
Thank you for this video! I actually asked you about this on Instagram this week! Lol ♥
What do you think about the issue with dust. I am just preparing the eco earth for my leo but found out data that once bone dry, eco earth crumbles, creates dust that can cause respiratory infection as well as irritation to eyes, ears, cloaca and respiratory system. I am currently drying my eco earth for days and I will later sift it in a sift with large openings hoping to remedy this. However I am a bit worried now.
Could you bake the bedding on a sheet in the oven to dry it out...?
I enjoy using Reptile carpet with both my Leopard Geckos. it's really quite excellent, paper towel is also quite good. they stay very clean and prevents pretty much anything from ever getting kicked up into the water
I'd get Eco earth or tile. Eco earth lets your gecko dig and lasts for six months at a time, and tile conducts heat well and is permanent. Reptile carpet tends to catch their teeth and claws
I suggest baking the eco earth at the lowest possible temperature for an hour or two, then letting it sit for half an hour. make sure to lay it out thinly. this really works especially since I have no access to the bags :|
So if it is parched and dry do u not have to replace it at all or just not as much as if it was moist?
And if the latter wad the case how much do replace it?
I added 2 more side vents and that helped
I have a tiger salamander he is still a larva and I bought some Eco earth is this it good for tiger salamanders
Hi! I've got a question and I hope U answer! :) I'm making a live terrarium for a crested gecko that I wanna get and I need to know what plants I can't use or r poisons to them? Thanks!! :)
Is that a marijuana leaf in your cage
I just bought a baby leopard gecko from a reptile show a few days ago. I've seen a lot of your videos on substrates and EcoEarth, and I'm wondering what the best substrate for a baby (he/she looks a few weeks old) would be? I bought a starter pack for the time being, and he/she seems to be getting comfortable in his/her new home. The substrate I use is the ExoTerra sand mat that came with the starter pack. I scrubbed it down in the bathtub and got all of the loose rocks and sand off of it. Is it still a good idea to use the sand mat or should I look for something else?
I'd get tile
I’m having trouble, I want to add eco earth because my Leo loves to burrow and be in her sphagnum moss hide so I figured I’d ass it but idk if I should add the heat mat on the inside or not.
I use it on the outside of my tank, I’ve heard that putting it in the tank can burn your gecko or can cause problems to the heat mat due to the moisture in the tank.
I'm using earth arid mix for my Leo gecko substrate, but even after trying to dry it out in the oven and it feeling very dry, it's still causing condensation in the enclosure. I'm wiping it down whenever I can but will it naturally dry out over the next few days? I don't want to go through the hassle of taking it out for a second time, but because I'm knew to owning my gecko I'm extra scared of doing anything wrong and don't want it to be dangerous
Love Diego in the beginning there 😝
Ok so I have a question. I'm getting a leopard gecko soon and I'm looking at all kinds of brands of heat mats, reptile hides, tanks and decor. I'm just wondering if anybody can recommend any brands and items. I'm on a budget $140 dollars so can anybody help me?
Can I use coconut husk as a substrate
can crested geckos live in this environment? I know they enjoy the humid and being misted, but to the point where there is condensation like this?
what about the condensation on the inside of hides?
i have my viv with my 2 new geckos i just got and the humidity is about 55% how will i reduce it
I watch your videos so much and i just got mine! My father surprised me with her! Her name in Sunny and she is an angle! Though i do have a question, what should I do when she start to lay eggs, (should i donate the infertile eggs, should i just throw them away?) what should I do?
Could you bake small batches to dry/sterilize for later use like with peat moss?
Yep.
Your videos are really good
I have bought the Komodo Tropical Terrain Compact Brick and I was just wondering if it's a good substrate for a leopard gecko because it seems like eco earth
Sounds fine
i get this sometime just clean the glass when it mist up. but i found that my leopard geckos like it so tend to do a full change when they are about to shed. as long as it not really damp as can get wet noises. so i leave mine to dry for bit but still has a dark look. and when i do change they like staying in their like house where the heat mat is more.
Just be careful, because too much moisture can cause respiratory infection
Just be careful, too much moisture can cause respiratory infection
most of the time its very dry.
I'm not sure if anybody is having the same problem, but I've found that the condensation doesn't stick to the glass because I have a screen top but the humidity is still high. Can anyone help me with any other solutions for this istead?
When my Leo eats food he gets so exited he snaps at nearly everything one time he invested a peace of ecoearth.Help what do I do
hi leopard gecko i know this may sound strange but do you own your own house and have a separate room for your geckos
thanks for all the great videos
Where did u get your tank?
Hi! I've been such a big fan of your channel since I got my baby leopard gecko, Loki :) He is now nearing 6 months old, I have him on reptile carpet, but I feel like it bothers him and sticks to his feet too often. I am wanting to switch to eco earth. Do you know what the proper age is to use eco earth since the little guys tend to eat more? Or does it not really matter? Also, do you know anyone who has experienced impaction or negative things from eco earth? Thanks!!!
Becca Carter
Yep, he can be on eco earth. He won’t get impacted if his husbandry is good. If you’re worried you could feed him in a separate container or use part solid substrate :)
So what exactly should be the humidity for leopard geckos? A local petco I've been to says 30-50. But petsmart says 10-20? Aslo online I have gotten a lot of variation. Curious Cuase a just got a gecko baby. His humidity stays around 30 percent.
Fairly low. They can have a warm humid hide.
wot in condensation?
I keep mine in a ten gallon aquarium with a screen lid, so it lets out almost all of the moisture. I never have problems with it being too moist
If it’s an adult that’s too small
How much does he way in Grams? and hello by the way.
What could a white moss be growing on a log in a tank
Great Video!
Hey guys I could really use help, my tank has eco earth in it and It seems even as a thin layer the pad wont heat up the eco earth. I don't want my lil buddy to get sick, can someone help me
Maybe you’ll have to try using a deep heat projector then the heat will come from above and have more chance of heating the substrate :)
Also, does anyone know of any good US sites where they sell succulents/air plants that are safe for leopard geckos? (Not sprayed with pesticides?)
lgsvuuuuuu Josh's frogs.
Should you put the eco earth thicc Layer or thin when putting it in you tank
Thicc
How many gallons is your tank?
The glass on my tank dont fog like that. Is it because you're using a vivarium?
Paty Romero probably. If your tank has a mesh lid, then it will dry out very quickly
I think this is fine for cresties ,right??#
I do not have the condensation anymore but it still stays at about 80-90proc humidity
I have just noticed very tiny white bugs in my eco earth for my aft. I do not know what they are. Are they normal or are they mites? Please I want to help my gecko if these bugs are dangerous.
Rogue Pets sorry if I’m to late but it’s basically a clean up crew
So would eco earth be an ideal substrate for crested geckos then?
Zoe Tuinman yes
why is it bad for them ?
wait wrong person srry
My male leopard keeps shredding daily and it keeps getting stuck on his eyes please help
Hi love your vids and your geckos
Love your vids
leopard gecko talk i have a question my gecko only eats big mealworms and i tried to get her to eat dusted crickets but she always refuses and i am scared for her helth and i wont ask the people at the pet store becuz they just want my money and they say get sand and bla bla bla...... so yeah what should i do please help me thank you and your vidos rock
There's lots of other insects you can try. Superworms, roaches, locusts, etc. Will he eat crickets that aren't dusted? If so, maybe you could try a different brand of supplement
While it is better to also try other insects, as said by Fiona, you can also try other supplements, and if all else fails mealworms are not too unhealthy and your gecko should be fine
Just a tip to anyone watching this, now only do this if you know your lizard won’t jump out and escape BUT if you leave the doors of your viv open a bit so you don’t fully close them the moisture with escape through that crack instead of staying in your vivarium. It took about 2 days for 2 thirds ( only 2/3 of my viv is covered in eco earth) of a vivarium to dry out fully and since then I’ve had no condensation and I’ve had eco earth in my viv for a little over a month. I hope that made sense
what would be the more affectionate/ liking to be handeled between leopard geckos and crested geckos? what one is more demanding on care level?
I have a couple of Leos. Both are very easy to care for. Cresties may be a little easier because they don't need insects or heat (usually). Leos are very tame and generally easier to handle because Cresties tend to jump a lot. Hope this helps :)
thank you!
I can only find the bricks, are those the ones you getting?
I was planning on just pulling them apart, or adding water then letting them dry out while I use paper towels for "substrate" cant wait to get my gecko! Ima name him Kiwi or her Ruby
What is the correct humidity for leopard geckos ?
30-40%
❤ awh adorable geckos
maybe you can bake/dry it in the oven?thanks for yet another great video!
can you feed your leopard gecko only mealworms and not crickets ?
i want to get one but i apsolutley hate crickets
but hey if they need to eat them its a price im willing to pay
While it's best for the gecko to have a varied diet, it can eat mealworms. I would suggest learning more about crickets, because they're not as bad as they seem, so do try to use crickets. If you're still unsure, then I'd suggest going over more of Leopard Gecko's videos. She explains everything.
Did you recently change the eco earth or are you currently using it? 🤔 I'm considering using eco earth for my leopard and I want to make sure it's the best decision.
a lot of people say organic soil is the way to go, but i do use eco earth, and so far it is alright. I did see a video where people say eco earth can stink, and mold or something like that
I watched one channel that said put it in the oven to dry it out 😊
So the moisture is good for African fat tail leopard gecko. But is it too moist?
your gecko is so friendly and personable. My leopard gecko was spooked by the front door closing while i was cleaning her talk one day and now she hates me. FeelsBadMan.
my gecko loves rearranging her eco earth.
TexanMarksman mine too
Is there a difference between male and female leopard geckos, behaviour wise?
I'm looking into getting a leopard gecko and I just wanted to know if I should be picky in my gecko's gender.
Like when i got my budgie, it was recommended that i get a male as they are a lot less moody.
veinsveins I think she has made a video on this before
XTheDeadUnicornX no, it's just physical differences.
TIMMY THICC ic there alone very slight males do mark their turf by wagging their tlae but thats
Could you mix it with loose non clumpy sand?
Never use sand
i hope you add triops 3.0
So the eco earth is supposed to be bone dry right
I usually don't run into this problem I have a ton of ventilation
Probably if you put leca and coconut chunks and put garden barrier and of the top is your eco it can breath well and will not have bad conversations. I live in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for 8 years and we have very high humidity and winter. Some parts of Saudi, Iraq and Jordan have snow too. Basically Middle East most likely have all same weather in general.
I’m planing on getting a gecko and purchased a ten gallon tank with no cover do I need a cover?
Gavin The gamer adult leopard geckos need at least a 20 gallon long. Do you have any cats or dogs that could get in? Will they be able to escape?
I’m late lol but yea I would suggest one just in case he/she is a climber
Hello I need help, where do I put the heat mat in the tank? I don't want a fire or my gecko getting burned
You put it on one side, under the tank if its glass, inside if it's wooden. It won't burn your gecko, just get a thermostat
I am getting a glass tank so if I put it under the tank and make sure it's not to hot will I be ok?
Yea, but you need a thermostat
I tried all Eco Earth in my tanks and my tanks have screen tops. I did not like the constant dampness it had so I went back to pellets for most of my tank. The dehydrated paper pellets stay dry, capture heat easily, do not attract bugs or germs, and make clean up so easy. So in 2/3 of my tank, I use pellets. On the cooler third, I use pellet and Eco Earth, and in the cool hide, I use purely Eco Earth, keeping it moist every day inside a tuperware container and topping it with a log hide. I have no condensation issues, no over moist, over heating, or any problems combining these substrates.
If you keep the moist hide in the cool side, it will cause respiratory infection. Have you ever considered trying tile?
its not that moist to cause any problems. We live in a very dry climate. There is a very dry cool part of the tanks also which is covered in addition to their moist hides so they have a choice. I also have a humidity and temp reader in the tank and a temperature probe inside the warm hide. Respiratory issue develop when the environment is too damp for too long of periods of time, too humid, unclean conditions, or lacking circulation. We do not have any problems at all.
I responded above.
Is it normal for eco earth to smell like chemicals when you first open it? or is it just my nose
No? It smells like soil
do you prefer eco earth with your gecko?
So, I recently got a couple of leopards in a exo terra low large terrarium (40 gallons) and I did eco earth. It's dry and I have the heating mat on the bottom instead of underneath. My question is, is eco earth flammable when exposed to the heat given off the mat?
A little worried. If you can respond or anyone knows the answer. It'll be deeply appreciated.
Put the heat mat underneath. It'll be fine, just make sure the heat mat is connected to a thermostat. Are the Leos both female and similarly sized?
Fiona Shepley yea it's been attached to a thermostat. It's already stuck to the bottom. But it's staying at a stable 90 degrees.
Sonny is slightly larger. But they have their own separate hide on the warm side. One in the middle and one on the cold side.
The temp sounds good. But are they both female? Because males will fight and a male and female will breed. Even if they're both female, they might fight so it's best to keep an extra tank handy in case they do :)
BrianZatzke Hi, wondering if i am the only one with this problem? I am getting Eco Earth but currently my reptile carpet doesn't get enough heat from the heat mat i believe, it is set at 108 as 90 Fahrenheit is very cold when i feel it, any advice? I do have a thermostat
108 is way too hot. You need a temp gun or a digital thermometer with a probe to measure it.
I just used the brick and I added too much water so i put another brick and still too moist for my ball python. I’m having to dry it out and hopefully it will dry soon so my snake can go back to his tank.
How often do you change your eco earth?
I'm a bit late, but you should switch out the eco earth every 6 months, and spot clean daily. I hope I help!
I thought I was fine until you said that you had the pre made one 😔 (mine is on its way)
Is this the same for coco fibre?
im pretty sure there is no difference
Ahh Diego is so cute! its always nice to be able to visit where your pets come from.
Eco earth is ok for my leopard gecko because my tank has a sliding screen on top which that's the moisture leave
What I did to dry out the eco earth is placed it for a few days on a very large tupperware lid so it was sitting shallow and spread out--more so than it would be even in the tank. I put my ceramic heater on its side and turned it on when I was home so it quickened the drying. I mixed it around as it dried and it was completely dry within about five days.
i got a leopard gecko on tuesday and it hasn't eaten yet.. it already shed and i think it went ok but it's not eating. what do i do?
Miss Asiatica it's normal for them to not eat instantly it's just getting used to it's new home .. if you want to try offer it smaller food I did that and it wirked then started gicing mine the bigger stuff to hope this helped 😊
Miss Asiatica same here I just got lil guy and he hasn't eaten since I've goten him, give him 2 weeks if he hasn't eaten then I would get a lil worried make sure you give him space.
Miss Asiatica she will eat just be patient and congratulations
Miss Asiatica just wait offer he/she some food and if not eaten take out and replace it. But my Leo did the same thing.
mine hasn't eaten properly for about 2 months just be patient and keep trying offer it wax worms but before it bites it very quickly swap It for a mealworm or cricket so it won't realise it works sometime
How do you dry eco earth?
you can leave it outside in the sun to dry or what i do is bake it in the oven (around 200-250°, it takes a bit longer to dry but if you do around 300-350° it’ll make your house smell)
Its actually the opposite mine is a bit too dry
Hi i have seen nearly all of you videos. I think you know your stuff and have inspired me, i am going to start a channel similar to yours but about crested geckos as i am getting one next month!
Thanks
Ben
My gecko is healthey and has no issues but she is not eating at all please help tail is fat but has not ate for more then a month
If they aren't losing any weight, and otherwise seem healthy, losing their appetite for a while is okay. I wouldn't worry unless they went over 2 months or started losing weight.
Probably brumation, nothing to worry about. One of mine's doing the same thing. What's the warm side temperature?
Temp is fine and she has not been eating for about a month and a half lost a little runt wait and eats very little portions every month it seems I have had 2 geckos already and have never seen this I though it was brunating 3 months ago but it's not it's just not eating
Is eco earth and humidity "problems" bad for crested geckos?
Frazerer crested geckos need high humidity
I know, just making sure something bad doesn't happen to mine "if" something is bad for it
I have the EXACT OPPISITE PROBLEM. It's like dry for some reason.
I have a question. Is it really grave if the substrate is sand for my leopard gecko's?
pls can someone tell me
Well if his care isn't correct then he will become impacted. I recommend Eco earth or tile
Luca Sparenberg yes sand can cause impaction and they will die :)
sand is bad and can kill unless you provide the proper care using sand. I'm not sure about that care because I use eco earth. there are a few videos on it, but I would recommend not using sand because if improperly cared for it CAN cause impaction and death.
Sand should never be used with reptiles
Sand if fine
