LOOSE SUBSTRATE FOR LEOPARD GECKOS? - Bioactive Substrate Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- There's always a great debate over what substrate is suitable and safe for Leopard Geckos, in today's video I'm going to review a new product that is meant to be both suitable and safe for Leopard Geckos and other animals from arid regions.

I love how much effort goes into your videos! You are always so well informed, and flexible to new idea and alternatives!
I am a brand new Gecko Mom and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos. I have had Beau for almost 2 weeks now. He is a Super Giant Tangerine Tremper and absolutely adorable although being a juvenile a little shy and jumpy. He is a Birthday present to myself and I'm enjoying watching him come out of his shell bit by bit. I find your videos so informative and calming after watching so many different care styles and the people are brutal sometimes when you question their methods. I can't imagine some of the comments you go through. Anyway thanks so much for all the time and love you put into your videos, I appreciate each and every one. 🙂💐
Greetings! I'd like to thank you for all the wonderful things you do. You are the one who convinced me to get a Leo, whom I named Bindii in honor of your old gecko. I watch all of your videos and I so greatly appreciate how much you help others with your care tips, and I just know you save multiple Leo's from improper living conditions with each helpful video. Please keep up the good work!!!
I bet the aloe went mushy because it got root rot from being over watered. Same thing happened to me because I didn't give it time to dry out between watering it. Happens.
but thats the weird thing, i watered it once when i first put it in lol
Leopard gecko 2017: “better not hurt my babies..”
I love your videos! By watching your videos i learned how to breed leopard geckos. Im forever grateful, thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for doing so many comprehensive videos. I got my first leo last week and your channel helped me so much with my research :')
Thank you so much! I was really worried about my substrate I’m not sure if it’s sand it’s a bit more rocky than sand...but now I know what will be better for my gecko. Tysm!
Hi I must say i really love your videos..* I was one of those people who just bought a leopard gecko from the pet store put sand in his cage as a substrate and had no idea they needed a heat mat nothing... Yeah i was pretty horrible not that i did not care for my leopard gecko i just did what the pet shop guy told me.. So all and all i started doing research and your videos where just perfect!!! I have 3 leopard geckos now and i just want to say thank u!! My geckos are healthy and well including my 1ste one Lilly..💝 and I'm going to move them to live vivariums now soon first need to build and decorate..
For the clean up crew, you could use springtails firebrats and giant orange woodlice, that's what I'm going to use when I set my tank up
I love your videos and love the info in them. I plan to utilize some of the recommendations as I make a new setup for a new Leo I will be getting. I did want to point out though that something that was said may be misconstrued. “All natural” does not equal completely safe. Calcium sand is all natural and will cause impacting and is definitely not safe. I feel like we all need to be careful and do research ourselves about things. Many natural substances are very unsafe.
I love your videos. They've been so helpful with my leo. Thanks
How was this flagged? Watched it 2 more times and I can figure out what it was that made them flag it.
What was it ?
The common leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a cathemeral, ground-dwelling lizard native to the rocky dry grassland and desert regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, north-west India, and Iran - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_leopard_gecko
How are we supposed to buy this product in the U.S?
right! i cant find a single way to purchase
Amazon?
@@thomasbeavers5088 nope just looked
Hey guys just found out they can’t ship it to the US thanks to customs
I DM’d the makers a while back on insta about it
I like growing succulents and the reason that they get soggy like you described is because of over watering. Succulents only need minimum water. I only water mine when the soil is completely dry.
OMG i love love love your step up that is awesome im going to try to recreate that for my leopard geckos!!!!
Would you suggest staying away from Eco Earth Coconut substrate? I can’t find anywhere that ships Arcadia to where I live! Thanks in advance!
Do you do the voice overs for Arcadias products as well?
Yes, Rebecca has produced the recent product videos on Arcadia's behalf. She is not employed by or biased toward the brand to my knowledge however.
Mike Tytula you comment and watch other videos liike a normal person that's CRAZY jk love your vids man
Oh ya I wasn't saying that she is biased I was just asking haha.
Omg Mike!
Hey I just had a couple questions would you use it as a substrate for a new leopard gecko if you missed it every couple days would it be too much moisture BTW we're getting a bigger house so I have more room to put my leopard gecko like I suggested in another video you might want to try getting a infrared camera and that way your leopard geckos to can still eat and you will not disturb then and you can still film I love your videos they inspire me every day to care more for animals
I trust your judgment on this product however, ecoearth was something you've been using for years and I've even been hooked on it for the past 3yrs. How can we actually trust that this new substrates volcanic bits won't hurt our geckos? I love zigs new tank, it's gorg. When you said "better not hurt my babies" it kinda reminded me of khaleesi from Game of thrones with her dragons 😂
In the rare cases of ingestion a healthy Gecko will pass this sort of particle with ease. The species would be long extinct were this not the case.
Shane that's not true. Sharp rocks or major pieces of substrate is proven to cause impaction. A healthy gecko cannot consume ROCKS and pass it, as she said sharp rocks can pierce a gullet inside the gecko
If you research the word - Geophagy, you will find wild Geckos and all manner of other animals actively consume mouthfuls of soil and small rocks in a bid to gain the nutrient rich content of such, it is perfectly safe for them to do so and is an evolved process.
That alone is irrefutable evidence that what you are saying is inaccurate.
If you wish to argue with evolution, do so with somebody else.
Born2Be_Ke Vlogs don't bother, I've tried arguing 😂 He doesn't budge. (Doesn't mean I will)
Anne, you were provided the information you requested via email and your questions were always answered in a polite, well written manner. Curiously, I am still waiting on your research, though I am sure that is coming any day now, perhaps when you finish typing bitter UA-cam comments?
If you, much like this young lady, who you undoubtedly have a lot in common with, wish to remain ignorant and arrogant in equal measure, that is up to you.
Great video ! Keep up the good work.
Your channel helps me so much 😄
Not that you "person making this" will see this since this video is a year old, but I just got a Leopard Gecko and I want to make a bioactive tank. Unfortunately, I learned this is a UK product and I live in the New Jersey. I wanted to know if you know of any bioactive substrates I could cook up at home or a way to get the arid earth mix in the US. Thx in advance.
Look up the different component that make up this soil mix and mix it yourself. It might actually be cheaper that way too.
As for the water problem...maybe mix it with Eco earth for the plant area's. It would allow for the water of your plants easier. Not to mention might help the success aspect better...At least I hope so. Thanks for teaching!
Hi, how often do you replace your substrate, if ever? How often do you have to add more substrate?
Your Gecko looks very happy and contented.
You can tell they love you and you always go the extra mile for their safety!
If everyone is first, who will be second?
Julia Elizabeth ....deep
Julia Elizabeth me cause im a nobody
..dang
i have a crested gecko for 3 days and scared to hold him i've had him on my arm though, and i'm finally picking up the courage to actually hold him.
Love your channel-it's my go to for any information. My only "complaint" is that being in the US, some of the products you talk about are not available here. I was able to get the Arcadia Shade Dweller pro kit which is great. I'm currently using the Eco Earth for my substrate and its working well. However I would love to try this but it's not available. Grrrr. Hopefully it will be available soon. Please let us know if you are aware of any places in the US that do or will eventually sell this.
Just wanted to update this; spoke with a local supplier here in the States, He told me that it looks like Earthmix cannot be imported to the US. Would've been nice to mention that in your videos?
Ed Scanni check expos. You could consider terra Sahara from the bio dude or making a mix of substrates for a bioactive setup.
I'm glad I subscribed to you because my 15 year old leopard gecko died and im going to need information on taming them and such.
The lonely Meower
Why do you need to tame a dead gecko
Jack Dawson for the new one lol
Jack Dawson 😂😂😂😂
Ahh, mushy succulents means over watering!! Hard to do... Maybe you need to set up more micro climates in the tank? A more humid area for stuff that needs it, like possible cleanup crews and the air plants, and a dry area for the aloe? Not sure, I don't really know your watering schedule :P
When aloe and other succulents go mushy it usually means they didn't have time to dry out completely in between waterings
Your review is on their website! That’s how I found it :D
I've just bought some of the internet I dont have my gecko yet but can I put it in its enclosure until I get it does it dry up or no I was struggling for which substrate but u have helped me figure out which one thanks
Good review unless the rocks are big then don't worry about them being sharp if you are extremely nervous you can sand/file them down
is 10 litre back really large enough for a 36 x 18 x 18 tank? for 3-6 inches deep?
Just had my 3 and a half leopard gecko outlive impaction due to the substrate I had and I am looking for a substrate that is safe for him and, if ingested, will not come close to killing him again. Any suggestions for a loose substrate that works?
I know this video is old but the succulent going mushy if from overwatering. Either it is getting too much water too often or the substrate is retaining too much water, and not having a chance to completely dry out before the next watering.
Awe ziggy was kissing you !!
“She was trying to get out, she loved it.” Love your vids no hate
How do you keep the custodians alive in an arid environment? I tried bioactive a while back and wasn't good enough about spraying to keep my springtails and isopods alive. I didn't like how moist I had to keep it as far as the gecko... gonna try the ecoearth and see if thats a good compromise
So what do you think about the texture in the substrate now and do you think its still safe and breaks down if any ingestion happens
Any ingested substrate will be passed easily as long as you’ve got proper temps.
If my tank is not bio active, how many times should I mist it if I get a leopard gecko? Obviously if I get an aft gecko it should be done even more since they need more humidity, but how abou leos?
Could you start putting links for the products that you review and like because I looked everywhere and I can't find this.
Thanks for suggesting pangea and repashy for my crestyy she loves it and she is in love with pangeaaaaa
Hi, Im using Earthmix right now, is it worth switching to Arid? My humidity is just right.
I feel stupid for asking but what does she mean by custodians? I’m a new Leo owner and just want what’s best for my lil guy
Tiny invertebrates (most commonly isopods and springtails), usually referred to as the cleanup crew, which clean the enclosure for you in a bioactive setup. They take care of any poop and mold.
Do you not get any humidity problems, I have started using this substrate but am getting a high humidity in my leopard geckos tank now!
Leave your earth mix out for a few days to dry out a bit before using
I'm going to put it in my Leopard Geckos enclosure. Do you think it will be safe for Emerald Tree Skinks?
Yep! I’d go with earth mix rather than earth mix arid, though, since I’m pretty sure that species requires higher humidity. And you could make your own mix for cheaper.
Awww my baby is asleep!!She is OBSESSED with your voice I'll have to put her in her new play area! Then she can hear your voice😍
I just got a leopard gecko today and he's so cool !!
If your succulents become mushy it is a sign of overwatering
Im 15 and love animals.i know how to care for all of mine, in fact i spoil them. Ive wanted a leopard gecko for a while ( my twin brothers got one and i absolutely love him) ive done so much research, more than i need to know to care for them, i know about the different morphs, how youre supposed to use heat mats instead of heat lamps and what kind of food is best for them , i know a lot. But i cant convince my mom into letting me buy (as in i pay for everything) one and keep them in my room. My dad might be able to sway to saying yes with lots of convincing, but my mom is not budging, any advice? Thanks
Olivia Rose if you can go to the store alone or with a friend that can drive just buy the tank and gecko and say you are attached to the pet she won't have you get rid of it
Taranturtle thats a good idea, however i will be in HUGE trouble, she will take away my phone, art supplies, ect.
I don't have eco earth where i live, what type of soil should i use?
I love your videos so much. You're just amazing
What do you think about the bio dudes Terra Sahara substrate? You think it's safe enough for leopard geckos? I live in North America and can't get earthmix arid.
IzzyGecko Videos ITS AMAZING HES DONE HIS RESEARCH AND HOMEWORK ITS JUST PRICEY BUT THE TARA SAHARA WITH ISOPODS N SUCH SHOULD BE PERFECT
You can still get EarthMix arid, it's just HARD to find. Luckily I've actually found a place where you can order it, i'll give you the link! www.reptilesrus.ca/arcadia-earthmix-10ltr-bag/
utub that’s just earthmix not earthmix arid
I've talked to Keith from there and they will not ship Earthmix or Earthmix Arid to the US due to it being confiscated at customs.
I'm using a 20 gallon FISH tank as what my lizards home will be when I get it. Is there any reason that I should NOT have a FISH tank?
That's fine, just make sure there's a gap between the tank bottom and table for air flow.
cool, thanks! ill keep that in mind
What do you do when feeding? Do you leave the insects in the tank even tho he hasn’t eat them? Is the insect going to harm the Gecko if he never catch it during night time?
Insects left in the tank can bite at the gecko. That’s why I feed one at a time, waiting for my Leo to finish one before giving her another
I''ve been looking into bioactive for my leo and AFT. This substrate is only in the UK? I heard that terra Sahara is what should be used for arid species in the US. Everybody just have their own take in bioactive.
Hey~ can i use anytype of potting organic soil for my leopard gecko as the ZooMed and Arid soil are not available where i live. What type of soil must i look for?
Organic top soil is fine, just make sure it doesn’t have any fertilizer
wait so if we can't get this in the US or if this is only good for a bioactive tank (idk). Would eco earth be the next best? Are there different types of eco earth? what's the best for leopard geckos?
Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate would be best. For a bioactive substrate you can use Terra Sahara from the bio dude or make your own mix of 60% organic top organic and 40% playsand.
I live in the U.S. on the east coast and I want to make a bioactive tank. What substrates are good bioactive substates thats I can get in America.
Would it be possible to use this substrate in a setup that is not bioactive? And would that be better or worse than something like eco earth
Ok now the real reason i needed to message is this.... Do you have n drainage layer in that tank?
Ok so my gecko has black spheres on the middle of its body im not sure if its just its morph im really worried please reply
My favorite youtuber!
Hey so my Crested Gecko Mushu was doing some weird stuff. So he accidentally got his tail jammed in the door of his tank, he didn't drop his tail but after I tried to grab him to see if anything happened but when I touched him he shook head and tail and made a sound almost like a creaking door. I'm just worried if there is anything I should do. Please if anyone knows if I should see someone or leave him alone. Thank you
Hi there. I'm interested in getting a crested gecko, and I was wondering if besides the normal feeding formulas, the geckos can eat fresh goods and veggies, like bell peppers..etc..
holdingoutforahero No they cant. However, they can eat repashy pangea watermelon. But you have to buy it online or in a pet store, since it is prepared specially and they cant eat regular watermelon.
constipatedcarrot ok, one more question, do you know if there are any vacation feeders for crested geckos, or timed misters for crested geckos?
So I’ve just bought some earth mix and had to take my leopard geckos out as the humidity levels were way too high! How the hell do you manage to keep humidity between 30-40 especially when you spray your tank? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Humidity in the range of 35-65% is fine for leopard geckos, as measured by a digital hygrometer.
If you water your plants twicw a day will increase the humidity does your gecko will became sick because that?
Alex's aquatic succulents are good since they need less water. You can keep any eye on the humidity with a hygrometer, 55% is the maximum :)
Do you have any recommendations on anything similar to the Arcadia arid mix? I live in the US and have spent the last hour trying to find somewhere that will ship to the states and its proven to be almost impossible
A mix that’s 60% manure-free potting soil and 40% playsand (or soil/sand/clay. Or zoo med’s Reptisoil, or terra Sahara from the bio dude.
Any update on if this worked out
? I’m looking to maybe get a leopard gecko and just doing research on different acceptable and safe substrates.
It’s a great option. Other good options include reptisoil or a soil/playsand mix (60%:40%)
What is the name of the substrate for the next time I try to get some substrate?
I have just received my earth mix arid but it just looks like soil not with little volcanic bits in it its definitely earth mix arid
How sad i cant order here in the Philippines any suggestions on how i can have a substrate similar there
hi, i'm worried about my gecko. I got her a week ago and she's eating well and drinking, also i'm dusting her food with calcium and vitamins, she shed yesterday and today i noticed green pigment on her back and head. I dont know what it is and cant find anything about it on the internet. Should i worry? Pls help
Most likely it's just the morph but if you see them act weird I would do some research on the behaviors and if you aren't able to identify it take it to a vet
Hi love your videos !!!!❤️❤️❤️
i cant buy this substrate in my country. do you think i can mix 70% potting soil with volcanic dust? i can find it easily here
Do you have a video showing the cleaning up the cage?
Can this be purchased in the US? Can't find it anywhere, been watching your vids for years and I finally want to ditch the reptile carpet because this substrate caught my eye but now I can't find it 😭😭
DOUBLExOHxKIRA maybe at expos
I can watch the video fine, so I don't think UA-cam is blocking it..
Would you be able to post a picture of this tank? I love the design and would love to replicate!
I saw that kiss ziggy gave you >w
I know this video is really old 🤣... but I hope you can help... how much substrate should I put in the tank I have a 2ft tank but not sure 🤔
It should be at least a couple inches deep. I’d get a bigger enclosure, 36x18x18” or larger.
Is a cleanup crew a need for a leo? I have repti carpet and I think it might freak my gecko out.
It’s not a need. But reptile carpet catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. It’s best to offer digging enrichment. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment.
Fiona Shepley ok cool thanks
Strange problem with watering. This shouln't happen. If you take wild soil from dry-rocky-grassy regions, water immediatly disapeares, even if soil is dusty dry. Got a few bags from the mountins this summer for my geckos.
I love this tank set up!!
What do you feel about the biodudes terra Sahara
Is it oksy to put shamrock the plant in the cage dirt?
Do you have to use this as a bioactive tank or can you just use it as a loose substrate?
lou hicks you can use as loose substrate
What age is the best to buy a leopard gecko
Tell me about your background! It's beautiful!
Is there an alternative since I live in America?
Use a mix that’s 60% manure-free potting soil and 40% washed playsand, or soil/sand/clay.
@leopardgecko I want to start taming my leopard gecko but it has been sitting in it's log hide for a very long time... when it comes out should I remove this hide? What should I do? I don't even know if I can feed it crickets unless I put it inside the hide
Try letting climb onto your hand. It may take time. Don't remove any hides.
Fiona Shepley Okay, thank you very much for the help
Thank you so much very helpful
Hey guys I'm planning on getting two leopard geckos but am confused about what to use for heating. I know I should definitely not use light emitting bulbs, if I get a under the tank heater should I get two for two leopard geckos? Also are ceramic heaters good too?
House the Leos separately and use heat mats :)
Fiona Shepley thanks, I was really hoping I could house them together but if you think that's a bad idea I'll take your word for it.
Actually it depend if you want 2 together just make sure they are female and get 20 gallon and make sure to have plenty of hides and make you let them meet each other first if you see any problems separate them I actually have 2 female Leo's together and they love each other one is slightly bigger and is the dominant one also I would feed them separately
@@bloodslushy346 I wouldn’t do anything smaller than a 4x2x2. Two Geckos (especially females) will fight for dominance. They are a hierarchical species, and you should provide multiple feeding/hides/etc. but you best bet is not housing them together period. Even if they have been able to work out the relationship others will not. I know you’re well intentioned just be careful.
Just got my gecko, I've had him on carpet. Poor thing seems to want to dig but it never works for him. I'll be switching later today.
I found this substrate is very very humid and it's constantly getting the glass condensates
I know I'm late but are you sure your using earthmix arid and not earthmix?
