  • There's always a great debate over what substrate is suitable and safe for Leopard Geckos, in today's video I'm going to review a new product that is meant to be both suitable and safe for Leopard Geckos and other animals from arid regions.

    I am a brand new Gecko Mom and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos. I have had Beau for almost 2 weeks now. He is a Super Giant Tangerine Tremper and absolutely adorable although being a juvenile a little shy and jumpy. He is a Birthday present to myself and I'm enjoying watching him come out of his shell bit by bit. I find your videos so informative and calming after watching so many different care styles and the people are brutal sometimes when you question their methods. I can't imagine some of the comments you go through. Anyway thanks so much for all the time and love you put into your videos, I appreciate each and every one. 🙂💐

    Greetings! I'd like to thank you for all the wonderful things you do. You are the one who convinced me to get a Leo, whom I named Bindii in honor of your old gecko. I watch all of your videos and I so greatly appreciate how much you help others with your care tips, and I just know you save multiple Leo's from improper living conditions with each helpful video. Please keep up the good work!!!

    I bet the aloe went mushy because it got root rot from being over watered. Same thing happened to me because I didn't give it time to dry out between watering it. Happens.

    Hi I must say i really love your videos..* I was one of those people who just bought a leopard gecko from the pet store put sand in his cage as a substrate and had no idea they needed a heat mat nothing... Yeah i was pretty horrible not that i did not care for my leopard gecko i just did what the pet shop guy told me.. So all and all i started doing research and your videos where just perfect!!! I have 3 leopard geckos now and i just want to say thank u!! My geckos are healthy and well including my 1ste one Lilly..💝 and I'm going to move them to live vivariums now soon first need to build and decorate..

    I love your videos and love the info in them. I plan to utilize some of the recommendations as I make a new setup for a new Leo I will be getting. I did want to point out though that something that was said may be misconstrued. “All natural” does not equal completely safe. Calcium sand is all natural and will cause impacting and is definitely not safe. I feel like we all need to be careful and do research ourselves about things. Many natural substances are very unsafe.

    Hey I just had a couple questions would you use it as a substrate for a new leopard gecko if you missed it every couple days would it be too much moisture BTW we're getting a bigger house so I have more room to put my leopard gecko like I suggested in another video you might want to try getting a infrared camera and that way your leopard geckos to can still eat and you will not disturb then and you can still film I love your videos they inspire me every day to care more for animals

  • @isaiahgreye1728

    I trust your judgment on this product however, ecoearth was something you've been using for years and I've even been hooked on it for the past 3yrs. How can we actually trust that this new substrates volcanic bits won't hurt our geckos? I love zigs new tank, it's gorg. When you said "better not hurt my babies" it kinda reminded me of khaleesi from Game of thrones with her dragons 😂

    • @Zuxeh
      @Zuxeh 7 років тому +8

      In the rare cases of ingestion a healthy Gecko will pass this sort of particle with ease. The species would be long extinct were this not the case.

    • @isaiahgreye1728
      @isaiahgreye1728 7 років тому +3

      Shane that's not true. Sharp rocks or major pieces of substrate is proven to cause impaction. A healthy gecko cannot consume ROCKS and pass it, as she said sharp rocks can pierce a gullet inside the gecko

    • @Zuxeh
      @Zuxeh 7 років тому +13

      If you research the word - Geophagy, you will find wild Geckos and all manner of other animals actively consume mouthfuls of soil and small rocks in a bid to gain the nutrient rich content of such, it is perfectly safe for them to do so and is an evolved process.
      That alone is irrefutable evidence that what you are saying is inaccurate.
      If you wish to argue with evolution, do so with somebody else.

    As for the water problem...maybe mix it with Eco earth for the plant area's. It would allow for the water of your plants easier. Not to mention might help the success aspect better...At least I hope so. Thanks for teaching!

I was able to get the Arcadia Shade Dweller pro kit which is great. I'm currently using the Eco Earth for my substrate and its working well. However I would love to try this but it's not available. Grrrr. Hopefully it will be available soon. Please let us know if you are aware of any places in the US that do or will eventually sell this.

    Ahh, mushy succulents means over watering!! Hard to do... Maybe you need to set up more micro climates in the tank? A more humid area for stuff that needs it, like possible cleanup crews and the air plants, and a dry area for the aloe? Not sure, I don't really know your watering schedule :P

  • @jessicat4047
    @jessicat4047 7 років тому

    When aloe and other succulents go mushy it usually means they didn't have time to dry out completely in between waterings

  • @dvious_
    @dvious_ 5 років тому

    I know this video is old but the succulent going mushy if from overwatering. Either it is getting too much water too often or the substrate is retaining too much water, and not having a chance to completely dry out before the next watering.

Ive wanted a leopard gecko for a while ( my twin brothers got one and i absolutely love him) ive done so much research, more than i need to know to care for them, i know about the different morphs, how youre supposed to use heat mats instead of heat lamps and what kind of food is best for them , i know a lot. But i cant convince my mom into letting me buy (as in i pay for everything) one and keep them in my room. Do you have any recommendations on anything similar to the Arcadia arid mix? I live in the US and have spent the last hour trying to find somewhere that will ship to the states and its proven to be almost impossible

      A mix that’s 60% manure-free potting soil and 40% playsand (or soil/sand/clay. Or zoo med’s Reptisoil, or terra Sahara from the bio dude.

    Any update on if this worked out
    ? I’m looking to maybe get a leopard gecko and just doing research on different acceptable and safe substrates.

      It’s a great option. Other good options include reptisoil or a soil/playsand mix (60%:40%)

      Most likely it's just the morph but if you see them act weird I would do some research on the behaviors and if you aren't able to identify it take it to a vet

      It should be at least a couple inches deep. I’d get a bigger enclosure, 36x18x18” or larger.

    Is a cleanup crew a need for a leo? I have repti carpet and I think it might freak my gecko out.

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому

      It’s not a need. But reptile carpet catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. It’s best to offer digging enrichment. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment.

    Strange problem with watering. This shouln't happen. If you take wild soil from dry-rocky-grassy regions, water immediatly disapeares, even if soil is dusty dry. Got a few bags from the mountins this summer for my geckos.

    Hey guys I'm planning on getting two leopard geckos but am confused about what to use for heating. I know I should definitely not use light emitting bulbs, if I get a under the tank heater should I get two for two leopard geckos? Also are ceramic heaters good too?

      House the Leos separately and use heat mats :)

      @missgreen2784 7 років тому

      Fiona Shepley thanks, I was really hoping I could house them together but if you think that's a bad idea I'll take your word for it.

    • @bloodslushy346
      @bloodslushy346 7 років тому

      Actually it depend if you want 2 together just make sure they are female and get 20 gallon and make sure to have plenty of hides and make you let them meet each other first if you see any problems separate them I actually have 2 female Leo's together and they love each other one is slightly bigger and is the dominant one also I would feed them separately

    • @sarahlewis7333
      @sarahlewis7333 3 роки тому

      @@bloodslushy346 I wouldn’t do anything smaller than a 4x2x2. Two Geckos (especially females) will fight for dominance. They are a hierarchical species, and you should provide multiple feeding/hides/etc. but you best bet is not housing them together period. Even if they have been able to work out the relationship others will not. I know you’re well intentioned just be careful.
