    What a fantastic documentary, Rosalie.
I'm so forever grateful for the community my channel has generated. I, of course, wouldn't be here without them. Music has always been such a huge passion of mine, so why not share all the emotions it evokes with like-minded people?
I wanted to bring up something Alanna said with her being extremely visual, I am the complete opposite. I have aphantasia, which means I have no minds eye. Music for me fills that darkness.

2:07:38 wow. Wow. Wow. When I think of the length, the preparation, the content, the insights, I really see you out a ton of work into this. This is so in-depth. I think it is the defacto video on this genre. At least until someone else puts in the serious work you have. Thank you, Rosalie, for your reactions, your interviews, your analysis, and now for this thorough and comprehensive documentary. Great job, Rosalie. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 5 stars!

Something that came to mind while watching this. In regards to reaction videos, especially on places like UA-cam or some other streaming platforms. The majority of social media tends to create more masks and walls on places such as IG, tiktok, and Facebook. With all of these additional filters and changing people's appearance and photoshopping. People are finding those more empty and more distant and unrelatable. Where as places like UA-cam reactions and some other streaming platforms may be like twitch and rumble, etc. You can pick up on the rawness being authentic, less alone, connected, community, and communicating. Not only are they looking for people who are real and transparent. Something I don't believe was mentioned is just how many people need to know that there is still goodness in humanity. There are still people that care!! Regardless of what's perpetuated on social media or the news. People desperately crave hearing that everything is going to be ok!! Thank you so much, Rosalie, for doing this. It was an amazing treat.❤

I'm a bit addicted to reaction channels tbh and in my opinion I can tell you I like them for 2 reasons:
1- I can re watch something that I liked too much at the time in a shorter version.
2- I don't have many friends and reaction videos makes me feel like watching again but with someone else, someone who will give me his/her point of views as opposed to having only mine which allows you to grow as a person by learning from others.

In case you haven't heard about it, Ren has a series of (for lack of a better descriptor) oral essays about his path through all of his mental health issues since he "shouted out into an empty room." at the age of 17. They are titled simply Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. He is up t #3 and seems to be putting them out one a day. I look forward to your reactions.

I wrote my idea above, but what about creating a collaborative for the mental health reactors? If Knox, bp, AR, Dom, and Cliff can do a rap reactor podcast/video, then why can’t Anna, Amanda, and Rosalie (or anyone else I missed…) a MEGA-reaction. That would be so cool. Although Rosalie would be like ben Shapiro or Destiny with how fast she talks…

Also neat how the comments of one interview will both echo and also deepen a different interviewee.

Rosalie this was amazingly informative and interesting, the choice of people who participated was very good, a great cross section. I enjoyed Anna’s contribution she always has an interesting perspective on all sorts of subjects, and in the past she’s been really helpful to me.
I found that a lot of what came out resonates with me and explains my interest in reviews; my main interest originally came from wanting to experience new music and developed into validation of my choices. Now it’s more to do with my interests in the reactors themselves and their likes/dislikes and method of analysis. My chosen favourite reactors now span a pretty wide spectrum of approaches, from music lovers to musicians, actors/actresses, singers, psychologists, neurologists etc etc. I find their work very diverse and amazingly interesting and informative.
Very well done with this, I will definitely share it with people I know that would benefit from watching it! 🌹

Thanks Rosalie; I've only been through 48 mins so far..... But it's been informative and has brought forth so many thoughts, questions & interpretations of what you and the guests have said. I thought about certain reactionists and how they have changed; I thought about You Tube reels, Tic Tock; several things. There is no way I could discuss everything that crossed my mind.
But I will share this: There is a reactor who has stated he is a hard core Pro football fan & even has some Football play reactions. He did a reaction of AC/DC Thunderstruck & never once mentioned hearing any part of it.
You cannot watch let's say more than 5 pro football games without hearing the beginning of 'Thunderstruck'
I no longer watch his reactions.
Another one says Led Zeppelin is his Second favorite music group now; has done at least 9 of their songs & cannot tell you the lead singer's name! & Knows none of the history.
So; that's not acceptable to me.
But this is perhaps a generational divide?? Now; it's all about that quick fix.... Tic Tock or similar; which is why some say You talk too much.
It's all about that reaction; or a toxic reply.
Keep deep diving is what my vote is & keep being honest...... I've only seen 2 Led Zep reactions from you thus far; but I will check out more FOR SURE & possibly subscribe!
Thank you for reading & for ANY feedback

    Great Conversations!
I watch a lot of reactors regularly, and you're spot on as to why. I especially enjoy watching those of a younger generation, or different ethnicity, discover and enjoy the things I've enjoyed for decades. Especially the young'uns, because they never knew that world, and it was a different one.

  • @toodlescae

I love watching reaction videos. To see the response of younger people or people who weren't into the genres of music, movies, comedians and tv that I was. The true reactions of amazement, appreciation and joy to something they've never seen but I've been watching or lustening to for decades is as closr as I'll get to experiencing it for the first again myself.
I get that in a deeper, more personal way every time I introduce a younger member of my family to music I've listened to and movies or tv shows I've enjoyed in 62 years. For instance because I've been a huge Scooby Doo fan since the first episode aired in 1969 when I was 7 I introduced it to the next generation. Starting with me there are now 4 generations of Scooby Doo fans in the family. My 4 great-great-nephews that I occasionally babysit, ranging from 6 months to 5 years old, are the newest generation of fans. Their mother is in the generation of fans prior to that along with my grandkids. The first song my now 5 year old great-great-nephew ever tried to dance to was Shake Your Booty by K.C. & The Sunshine Band. 😂
A day you can put a smile on even one person's face is a good day IMO.
I watch other youtube channels to learn things. I watch reaction channels for entertainment. To have fun and a bit of nostalgia. I do credit reaction channels for introducing me to artists like Home Free, Tom McDonald, VoicePlay, Adam Calhoun and others that I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

I had a close friend who was studying for her M(Psych) too, at her birthday party she invited 8 friends from her course, and then lonely ole me - no background in the field.
So one of them was already practising, she was quite into musical narrative therapy. I imagine part of it was expressing your own feelings and reactions to different music.

Great documentary. I find it interesting that people actually seem to genuinely care about their favourite reactors and artists and are emotionally invested in them. It's a strange type of relationship but it is a relationship, I think. It can be seen as being one-sided and it is, in so far as the viewer feels a familiarity with the reactor or artist that is not reciprocated at a personal level. However, reactors and connected artists (such as for example, Ren) also respond to their audience, which can give a feeling or sense of reciprocity. It's strange.

  • @tinytim161061
    @tinytim161061 17 днів тому +2

    Excellent video Rosalie.
I have been watching reaction videos for around 4 years and my path is probably similar to many others. ( 62 M UK ) I first came across reactors while searching videos of old rock groups - being of that era. I loved seeing young people- mostly Americans at the time, discovering the music I had grown up with and being blown away by it.
This then morphed into watching reactions to comedy, tv serials etc.
    but still predominantly music.
Then I started watching 'expert' reactors. Vocal coaches, Musicians , engineers etc which gave me a different viewpoint of the things that I listened to. Once I started building a subscription list of the reactors I enjoyed, I started listening to other reactions of theirs. This opened up a whole new world of artists and genres to me. (Ren being a good example) Then you find yourself searching for other reactions to this new music. Sometimes because you want affirmation that what moves or inspires you does the same to others, Sometimes you identify with a group of like minded people through the comments. maybe theres an element of tribalism and or community involved.
I love learning from reactors - using Ren again as an example, I knew nothing about battle rap but, watching reactors dissecting his and Knox Hills battles with King Dotta and learning about the history and meaning behind this I gained an understanding that I would never have had otherwise (Rap having mostly passed me by).
I don't like most of the modern music that is available through radio or other mainstream media - yes there's some good stuff but the amount of rubbish, waffle and advertising stops me being engaged.
One last positive and a negative,
The positive. Over the years I have heard great bands, singers and buskers that never got further than playing in pubs or on street corners never had chance to put their art in front of a larger audience. I'm still not saying its easy but UA-cam at least gives another avenue to give them a chance to be heard - with reactors playing a vital part in this.
The negative - because of the amount of similar things I watch the youtube algorithms tend to push stuff that I already know onto my front page, making it harder to discover something new - again the reactors help with this.
Right I'm off to listen to some Pete and Bas -nothing more cheery than a couple of 70 year old UK grime artists

They remind me of socializing with friends when we got a new or popular 45 record or album. But we do it online through chatboxes and fan groups. Really employed during lockdown. This is more to music reactions. This also gave consumers more autonomy and choice without record company control. Artists can connect directly and communicate and support artists we choose.

I'm only 20 min in but it's super interesting so far. A note on MrLboydReacts' comment on videos that don't give value performing well: Viewers like me appreciate the insight from reactors but also watch non-reaction content about history and other topics. Reactions are my end-of-day/nighttime stress-reliever, at which point I'm just looking for community, maybe musical and other creative insight, but nothing too heavy. The deeper stuff might be watched on weekends. Thanks Rosalie!

I'm looking forward to this video, but I just have to say that I hated all the videos of parents scaring their young kids and posting it online. I always think of the vine with the little girl in the convertible car screaming because of the top closing and the parent filming from outside the car. Having an adult you trust laugh at your terror is really messed up.

Omg I'm loving this soooo much hun lol.... during your conversation with arjen all I could think by the end was lol challenge accepted lol
Shamira left me contemplating how incredibly powerful the networking reactions are becoming while leaving me with a terrible trepidation at the thought of it becoming a replacement monster to where labels became.... through out life people constantly find new ways to bring connection only to have it ultimate exploited.... although I personally find hope as having an almost masochistic aspect ... probable pain be danged.. I truly hope we're able to hold onto the magic of it being what the individual brings to the whole that helps us keep it at bay for as long as humanly possible
The truth in the food comparison brought by enter the chronic fueling that hope with the possibility that if people are able to see music much like food we might truly find ways to open an awareness angel that we may otherwise have not pieced together...
From food being a necessity, processed food, fast food, the power of a home cooked meal, even into the concept of smorgasbords and food courts each part has brought with it an ability to accommodate our needs with a unique flexibility as to the need needed lol... like all things the benefits of difference always come at a cost but if approached actively maybe just maybe we can learn to utilize each in a manner that always keeps the cost reasonable...
Many reject the id3a of 'one' immediately fearing the conformity... some have a belief that conformity may even hold a feeling of salvation...
But what if we looked at that oneness from a less singular perspective while literally utilizing to singularity of self as a model of how to maintain our identity within it...
Humanity is sooo much bigger than the human body but what if the body were more of a map... full of different parts.. from things as big as limbs and organs right down to atoms and cells.... each playing a role. Yes technically not every part is 'necessary' tho thr loss or damage to any impacts all... over compensation and specified training proof that functionality will maintain bc to not would come at the cost of the whole but where we sell ourselves short and rip each other off maybe in our losing site that there is no means with an outcome.. even where selfishness may arrise.. where the benefits gained come anywhere close to those gained by all when each part functions optimally thus optimizing the whole...
This brings a need to have care in regards to all the other parts as well...
Our differences being the key to us ever finding a functional cohesion...
    Hmmmm... intriguing...
In a world where the divides are becoming increasingly defined...leaving me questioning my will/want to stay... the journey of seeing what we could actually accomplish has me thinking it might be worth sticking around for even ...

I love how you pointed out the different things you learned/gathered from the various conversation segments. I believe, yes it’s absolutely worth sticking around :-) you being a healthy part of the whole can impact the parts of the body you touch and even if we can’t control every aspect, it’s a wonderful life we get to impact our own and those we’ve been blessed to be surrounded by. I'm 1:38 in and I'm loving the hell out of it. What a fantastic job Rosalie! I though I'll wait till the end, but I can't shake two feelings:
    1. The Avengers (Anthony Ray, Black Pegasus, Cliff Beats, Knox Hill and That Singer Reacts) really need to get their act together and affiliate with you in some way. Of course you guys are different in many ways and I'm not suggesting you should be in the same exact group, but both you and then are pushing this networking effort and you have to align somehow.
    2. I'm really missing Disco Doc in this documentary. He has such a unique perspective about it, being hidden behind an AI persona, that you wouldn't get from any other reactor. I'd really make a 1.1 version to add him to the mix.
Anyway, fantastic, you are really one of the pioneers of something new ❤

@@rosalieelliottofficialI’m pretty new to reaction videos but think it’s great that you’re looking into this and exploring reactions , reactors and the communities around them.
I definitely think you should explore Disco Doc as a reactor and get his insights into this subject. His approach is a unique one in the sense he is an AI persona but his message is one of community and mutual support.
I think it would be interesting to get his take on reactions and how his experiences as a reactor may differ given the AI persona.
Really enjoyed digging into this though.

I will chime in here maybe to help your research. I watch music reactions not to find new music but to see other’s opinions on music I know
    1. I want to share and or relive my emotions or experience and compare
    2. Watching a reaction with someone that knows music many times will give me an outlook or view that I never saw in a song before after listening to a song or group for 30+ years

Great documentary Rosalie well done...Personally i started watching reaction videos to see how other people reacted to REN his music his vidoes as i was curious to see if his music brought up the same emotions/joy/shock/Awe etc in the reactor watching them and then to join in the comments with my own thoughts and feelings......i have now watched hundreds of reactor videos mostly all REN but also some other Artists too.....

Our senses are closely linked to our memories. A smell, a sound, a taste will remind us of different precise events of our lives, bad or good. In the case of music reactors, the "proposer" will want the reactor to feel and discover the "good" feeling the proposer himself/herself felt, and probably still feel, when hearing that particular song. Be it joy or sorrow, knowing that the reactor might connect with yourself, and get what you ecxperienced earlier in your life is a direct connection to another human being, a real sharing.
Also, as a "petitioner", you feel that you'll be able to reach out to other people (the reactor's viewers) and make them discover new artists. For my part, I try to propose less known artists, so people might enjoy discovering them, as I did earlier in my life.

I am pretty early into this video but I would like to respond to Mr L. Boyd. I typically only watch reactions to movies or music that I enjoy. I value a reactor's views more when they don't always gush positivity. It makes the times that they do praise or enjoy something more genuine. Mr L. Boyd is one of these reactors, I don't always agree with him but I still appreciate his point of view.

Now if i hear a song with deep lyrics or words that speak on God... I get tears in my eyes. NF is a big one for me Ren... Even Eminem because i relate with him alot. Hmm, like reactors say, that's a lot to unpack. So, no essay leaves comments to be on specific bits or in general. How things are built is interesting to me and this was an adventurous construct that turned out to have enough of relevant (to me) content that I watched the whole package. Congrats on the structure that worked well to present content while holding interest on enough levels to keep folks watching. Yeah, I almost clicked on when the blatant child exploitation lead off and would have without checking the outline of what else was on this path. Good work is always good to see, thanks.

I'm definitely not a fan of fake reactions, or even exaggerated. Some people are naturally very expressive, so it can look like they are exaggerating, when they aren't, so it's best not to automatically assume. Nor am I a fan of those who watch a video, and only say a few words of praise. I like it when I can learn something about a song or artist, learn why a song or artist does better than other similar songs or artists. And I enjoy seeing the top artists that aren't getting the attention they should be, getting introduced to new audiences.

What I took away from your video and interviews is that these channels are largely therapeutic, A bonding communal almost tribal experience, And for some a cathartic connection with the reactor that helps them heal and grow. That sounds profound and a bit much BUT if the reactor is trusted to be genuine enough so the viewer can ingauge it can be very deep. For me the feeling of being connected to the reactor far out weighs the music, And I feel it helps me! And the right reactor can enrich you and aid in your journey some have no idea how much they touch humans on that level...

I definitely prefer Carl Jung to Freud, I think that Sigmund oversimplifies human nature. Through the internet we are able to learn about cultures we know we may never experience personally. I am a Dimash Dear and a fan of Forestella, there are many who appreciate both, although many Dears profess they only ever listen to Dimash. Most Dears will admit that they are the only ones in their family who are fans of Dimash, it’s a worldwide community, his concert on May 4 had fans from 77 countries. I didn’t watch reaction videos much prior to 2020, I didn’t have time, but I think now that I am no longer working, I think it’s my only form of socialization, which sounds bad. Unfortunately while scrolling on UA-cam the ability to truly escape reality is not there, so many videos of negativity, which I should avoid, but I don’t always do. I have enjoyed watching this, several of the reactors that were guests are ones that I have watched or still watch. Seeing Jacob reminded me of home because I discovered him when I on Long Island which is where he’s from. Thank you Rosalie, once again I have enjoyed your perspective and questions about what is the draw of reaction videos, what are the negative effects or positive effects.

  • @garyseabolt
    @garyseabolt 17 днів тому +1

I'm not surprised by reaction videos popularity at all. It is an effect that has probably been going on since humans have been in existence. From my own anecdotal experience I have exercised this same thing many, many times throughout my life. Whether it be through introducing a friend or family member to a new song or a new movie or any other new thing really and watching and waiting in anticipation to see how they react. Do they like it, do they hate it, do they feel the same way about it that I do. Reaction videos are the exact same thing in just a different format made available to a broad audience rather to the individual or narrow audience that is present. Lboyd, (who I have watched many times) siad people want to be in an echo chamber and have a negative response if the reactor doesn't agree with the viewers opinion. This isn't me. I'm interested in their reaction no matter what it is. I have discovered by watching many videos by the same individual you start to get a psychological profile of the individual, you start to understand how their mind works. By doing this with a large number of people you start to get a broader sociological profile in general. Then over time, (I have been doing this over a period of 4 or 5 years) you start to see these profiles shift and morph into something new and different. This leads to developing a more elastic understanding of sociology and culture. It also obviates the fact that nothing stays the same whether it be individual psychology or sociology in general. While at the same time from a 3rd party perspective you can see things that the individual can't see. I have discovered that many people seem to not really know what they think even though they believe they do. They will make a statement but later make offhand comments that contradict that statement, sometimes immediately and sometimes at a later point in a different video. But other people remain consistent without contradictions. This may be largely due to them just trying to generate commentary off the cuff without taking time to think about what they are saying or sometimes it may be simply people trying to say what they think they are expected to say or "should" say. All in all it is an interesting thing to observe and learn from.

To watch someone react to something they are actively choosing to be subjected to I've always enjoyed no matter the emotion I've found I'd just shared with said individual
To see someone.. especially a child.. be subjected to something they couldn't possibly do so to from a perspective of informed consent having the understanding going in that what they are about t be subjected to will have entertainment value for those setting them up for said experience while the likelihood of that individuals experience being anything better then horrible instead has always left me in a negative mind space if I actually even subject myself to it at all
Sharing having both aspergers as well as being agoraphobic I used to be much like Mr Banks tho being a female with a aspergers as you know imposter syndrome tends to play a much more prominent role in my case which in turn brought a whole new aspect to reactions that nearly turned my new found positive into an extreme negative as it bordered on addiction....
Uniquely enough Mr Banks was actually the ground wire who's point blank honesty was what allowed me to surface enough to realize how close I'd almost come to leading myself into an extremely bad situation
BP being someone I've actually followed far far longer than he's been a reactor has been another one of those groundwires being someone I knew stuff about beyond the way he reacted to things! This in and of itself became an extremely important aspect of which reactors I follow finding that the ability to connect with why they as an individual had a said reaction kept me aware of my own feelings limiting the risk of not being able to differentiate between their and my own
This is something that your psychology background helps with as well ❤ yet with yourself and a couple others I find I turn to more when it's content where that line being to blur ... so I want to thank you for always being there even not knowing you have been. You are appreciated ❤

My only real interest in reaction video's is watching young black teenagers who have never heard all our best classics from the 70's & 80's. Most of the other types of reactions I find annoying and don't bother. So many are just looking for attention or a way to make a few extra bucks. I'm not even interested in hearing this particular opinion.

We’re all standing on the shoulders of one another. Ripple effects and inspiration. Long before reaction videos, there was (and still is) journalism for example. Reporting on the events and actions of others. Or theatre and plays, acting out stories written by another. Concerts - instruments played to the composition written by another.
:) we’re all more connected than we realize. In my opinion. That isn’t to say a good reactor should add some type of value or bring his/her own talent, experience and education though.
I do notice how many reactors often have some field of expertise of their own.

1:36:16 don’t agree with Professor Leary. It makes sense, but from a Christian perspective, his comments downplay the dishonesty. Why can we not admit to our peers what we like? Two deep issues:
1st - are they really friends if we cannot open up? And this needs to be clarified. There should not be more than 5-10 friends at this level of honesty, else they tend to be superficial.
2nd - what we are enjoying could be(and most likely is) wrong. And wrong in the broader sense of not profitable(not beneficial to my immediate relationships). So my secret, safe enjoyment is growing. And auto-strengthening. So after weeks of fortification, if a true real live friend were to question it, it would cause one to even further align with the online, safe world, and alienate from the real person.
So the dangers of the ‘safe’ reaction community are real. But only in relation to healthy, deep relationships. The online community is good for the increasing numbers of those who are truly isolated. But it is a temporary solution.
The best hope for reactors and other online communities: is to cause one to look in the real world for the authentic connections you experience in the online world.

32:46 Hi Rosalie! Only about a 1/3 through, and sorry to start with a critical comment, but the editing is very sub-par. Hate to suggest you spend money, but you could probably get an upwork or fiverr to edit your documentary at a very affordable rate. I think you still need to do the content editing, but a professional or skilled amateur could add some overlays, cutaways, transitions. The intro was excellent but the transitions between interviews have no flow.
Edited: i do notice some of the overlay shots. Great. Needs more. Also the main criticism is transition between interviews.
I promise my next comment will be glowing, as what you are doing, capturing, conversing, and creating is EXCELLENT - content-wise.

There are some good reactors and a lot of very very bad ones (some of those very bad ones have a ton of subscribers), some of the best and worst are regarding the Welsh boy wonder known as "Ren"... Now to be honest, i'm a fan of the sheep shagger, my sister in law is one (a taffy) FFS , but some of the sycophancy at times in the reactions is vomit inducing, The Welsh boy wonder has certainly made money for reactors and there does seem to be a lot leeching off his success without ever daring to say a bad word about him or any of his tracks, Yes some of his music is fantastic, but some is very averagely shit.... and i'm sure he knows that.........

I think that people are basically looking for validation of their own feelings. I tend to watch videos of people reacting to things that I like. If the reactor likes it too, it validates my own feelings about the media. Also, on occasion, the reactors will see things that I missed in a particular piece of media. Seeing it through someone else's eyes can help me discover things that I may have overlooked.
