The demise of Saturday mornings on the Peacock could be considered a perfect storm of: (1) NBC relying too long on four cartoons (The Smurfs, The Snorks, Alvin and the Chipmunks and until it moved to ABC in 1989; the Gummi Bears) as their heavy hitters; (2) the replacement newcomers being extremely weak (Yo! Yogi and ProStars, especially); (3) NBC News wanting to expand the Today show to Saturdays (the one day they did not air on; Today had only expanded to Sundays about 1987) and finally the success of Saved By the Bell leading to NBC executives doing what most network execs do when a show is a huge hit: order as many clones as possible.

@Avery Merrick I felt that the 1991-92 season was when NBC was on its last legs of airing Saturday Morning cartoons. If they could improve during that season, then we could see a better lineup for Saturdays on the Peacock.

A market they indeed had to have regretted abandoning once Fox Kids and Kids’ WB! both peaked in 1993 and 1999.

NBC was the lowest-rated Saturday morning cartoon block of 1991, and one of the main reasons for it was because its competitors had better cartoons. Why watch Yo Yogi! on NBC when you could watch Bobby's World on Fox Kids? Why watch Pro-Stars and Wish Kid on NBC when you could watch Garfield and Friends and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) on CBS? Heck, Nickelodeon had their then-new Nicktoons at the time; Doug, Rugrats (1991), and The Ren and Stimpy Show.

I had just turned 9 exactly one month earlier. Here's my analysis of the shows on the lineup.
Yo Yogi: Even as a little kid I realized Yo Yogi was trash. Even young children know the difference between something that's actually cool as opposed to something masquerading as being "cool."
SMW: Oogtar needs to die. As far as the cartoons, and the games for that matter, SMB3 was the best.
Captain N: Meh... Kinda Cool. Princess Lana was hot. I kinda preferred the Power Team on Video Power, prior to its gameshow makeover. Johnny Arcade was one coked out MoFo. Both were better than JD Roth and his stoner buddy on GamePro. He can go back to emulating Mark Summers DD schtick on Funhouse.
Pro Stars: Bo knows merchandising. Meh... it was okay. Was never a huge sportsball fan, but every kid knew who these guys were.
Wish Kid: I was super psyched when I heard there was going to a show starring Culkin. He was huge after Home Alone. When this show premiered though I was SEVERELY disappointed. In retrospect though, it seems like Butch Hartman is a plagiarist in addition to a scumbag, an indoctrinating evangelical D-bag, a no-talent hack, and a fraud.
Chip & Pepper: Never heard of these D-bags, which is interesting because I flipped back and forth between all the Networks on Saturday Morning, and am pretty familiar with even the most obscure children's programming. I'm guessing it was some sort of live action lead in show to older cartoons?!?
