  • Near Dark is the dark horse of 80's vampire flicks. Armed with a western vibe and a very non-conventional approach to vampirism, Near Dark is easily one of the most unique and underrated of its genre. Let's discuss the unsung classic before daylight rises.

This was shot in my hometown of Coolidge, Arizona. They blew the semi truck right in front of where I work now and the farm scenes were shot at my friend's place in Valley Farms.

Equal accolades for Jenette Goldstein for being a vampire, getting killed by a Terminator (T-1000 in Terminator 2), then appearing AS that Terminator two seconds later, and then blowing up at least two aliens, herself, and (woohoo!) Lt. Gorman in Aliens. (Although I guess you could argue that the grenade actually KILLED her that last time.) With all that, I'm not taking away points for missing out on being killed by a Predator. And yeah, I know I listed those movies in reverse order.

Love this review but I personally always connected Jesse as one of the vampires spoken of by Brendan Feher in the cult classic "The Forsaken" who along with Jonathan Schach's (Kit) gave themselves over to the vampire when they were facing death. Given the similarities of these two films where they took place in midwestern America is why I made the connection. But Jesse's origin is similar to Jasper Hale from Twilight who was a civil war soldier turned by a vampiress.

Haven’t clicked on a thumbnail quite as quick as when I saw this in my feed. I love Near Dark. Arguably my favorite vampire movie. It’s criminally underrated and underseen.
The perfect word that describes why this movie is excellent is “atmosphere”. This movie has such a unique, creepy atmosphere that is unmatched by any vampire movie. I wish all vampire movies strived to have an atmosphere like this. I think The Lost Boys comes close, but can’t beat this movie.
Legendary Bill Paxton performance. I agree with you on Caleb too. If he was 25% more likable, this movie would be a 10/10 for movie.

Hi Cody - great review of my favorite vampire film!
I first saw Near Dark when I was 11 years old. I didn't fully appreciate it - my fav vampire film when I was a kid was always Fright Night.
But I bought a second hand DVD copy of Near Dark a couple years ago and thought it was great. Kathryn Bigalow does so well for her directorial debut.
For me, Jesse and Severen are great characters, and I like the dynamics of the vampire group, the way they interact.
Caleb and Mae are ok, I just think they're overshadowed by other characters.
The blood transfusion was a bit weak but it occurs at the end and I'm so into the film that it doesn't really bother me too much.
One thing that does bother me was a scene concerning Homer. He is an adult in a child's body but he 'likes' Caleb's sister (who is a kid) and takes her home with him ... creepy.

He is yet to do it. It’s okay. I still love you, Lee! Anyhow, as usual, I agree with everything you said about this movie-everything. You and I seem to view films with the same eyes and attitude-I don’t know how the hell that possible, but it is. This film is no doubt way underrated. The little kid that played Homer is actually the real life little brother of the actor that played Michael in Lost Boys. Interesting connection there, huh? But vampires are supposed to sparkle in the sun. No, Stephanie, they don't. 😉😂 Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, Near Dark, haven't watched it in ages, but agree, was a great movie. I'll say easily ranks up there with Fright Night, Lost Boys, and Dusk Til Dawn as some of the best from that time period. But do agree, been better if they went with the traditional, Mina/Dracula way of kill the vampire, turn back human, but all and all, still a great movie.

We always thought of the group as a family that Jesse and Diamondback created. Jesse bit her to have a female mate. He probably bit Severen to have a strong adult son who would do his bidding. Diamond bit Homer because she wanted to be a mother to a child. Mae says Homer bit her because he had a crush on her. And she bit Caleb because . . . well, it was an accident. But you're right. Homer could have been the child vampire that Jesse sold his soul to for eternal life. And maybe Homer wanted a father figure who could protect him. That would make Homer the "old man." Later, Diamond took on the role of his mother.

The "cure" isn't the issue for me, its that it comes out of nowhere. At no point did they establish in the movie Caleb having this idea or this inkling to such a thing. Even a small line about it, or maybe Calebs dad having the idea since he seems to be a vet.

One of the best vampire movies, the blood transfusion thing was a little too convenient for me but i didn't hate it just thought it was not the best choice. The acting for the most part is fantastic in this movie and Bigelow was already a very good director. A very well made, quality horror movie that even cinema snobs that usually hate on horror should be able to find some positive things to like.

Not only is Kathryn Bigelow a fantastic director, she's also a stunning one....Well, I mean she was 35 years ago. And James Cameron was one lucky SOB...

I really like this movie but I’m surprised that you did not mention the writing as a negative. So many of the lines during the shoot out for example we’re just after dub recording that just detract it from the scene

I was NOT a fan of the whole blood transfusion either. Plus, Wouldn't you have to completely train that person of blood to cure them?

Hey cody this has nothing to do with near dark so sorry about that lol but i was wondering if you can review dawn of the dead remake? Or at least compare the remake to the original? I know you're not too much of a zombie fanatic but dawn of the dead 2004 is my fav zombie movie of all time and just wanted to know your thoughts on it

Just watched this, I don't think you even see a pair of fangs in this movie. I love that they're dirty drifters, it feels so much more accurate then these eccentric aristocrats that are normally vampires....no offence to lustat and louis those guys are awesome, this is just a welcome change. I don't think ive wished for a spin of story more then wish for one with severen (only with Bill of course) severen with the bloody smile, shades, shot gun leaning against the bar is such an iconic shot. You see that image and it just makes you say "fuck I should watch this movie!"

Better than The Lost Boys or Fright Night. But yes, I thought the transfusion deal was hokie even as a kid of 13 watching this back in the day.

Definitely my favorite line in a vampire 🧛‍♂️ movie, I hate it when they ain't been shaved 😒. I remember that story, I believe Paxton was with Hendrickson that night with the cop.

I was a victim of hype on this. Heard about it for years but was never able to find it on dvd/blu-ray nor to stream. Recently at a horror convention I did find a bootleg copy. Overall, I liked it but was a let down after everything I had heard. I thought Paxton and Henriksen were as great as I had heard. What let me down was almost everything regarding lead character, Caleb, and his love interest, Mae. I could not buy into their connection at all. This brought down my overall enjoyment because that is the focal point of the movie and it just did not work for me. Maybe if I revisit it in a couple years I will like it more.
