  • Makoto Shinkai manipulates all of our heartstrings very effectively. He uses the common theme of distance that transpires in all of his works so far.

    I’ve never been this deep in my feelings right now because I am experiencing this right now. I recently moved far away from my hometown and there is a person that I love very much that I had to leave behind. We tried to maintain a long distance relationship but eventually we drifted away and it hurt too much to be together because we both knew that we would become distant. I feel like I can relate to almost all of his works because I too yearn to be loved but there is a great distance between us and I am willing to do anything it takes to ensure we maintain a strong relationship

      Holy s*** I completely forgot about this comment. But to answer your questions, in the 3 years since I posted this comments I moved on and found love for 2 years. Ironically I ended up moving back to my hometown a few months ago and our relationship started to decline again. Though, this time it didn’t hurt as bad since I was surrounded by people I already do and loved that gave me major support during it.

    I am moved to tears by your analysis of the movies of Shinkai, realizing that I watched his movies inadvertently from Voices of a Distant Star to Kimi no Na wa without knowing it was Shinkai's. It transported me as how important motifs and thematic touches a writer/artist stylistically choose their undertones. Shinkai's purposeful use of distances as means to evoke emotions and subliminally correlate human experience regardless of space or time are so universal and yet compelling that it moves audiences to tears or bring them at the verge of happiness and melancholy. Thank you for your exquisite video.

      To this day, 5CMs is still my favorite, the way it started and the way it ended, I felt it emotionally for weeks. Everything from kids hoping to stay together, to not having your love reciprocated, to finally letting go. It hurted so much when I finished watching it. Not only did Takaki lost contact with Akari, but he didn't notice Kanae..... and when he grew up, he broke up with his girlfriend..... lost..... it's at least some solace that we find out Takaki gets into a relationship with Kanae though. But that thing hurts.

    what kind of distance do you guys think Weathering with you picks as a thematic representation of it's romance?

    • @magnus7153
      @magnus7153 4 роки тому +3

      I think distance in of terms of duty. Hina was suppose to stay in the otherworld to stop the rain from overflowing tho Hokada refuses this. I think also distance of terms of socioeconomic status. Hokada is from the countryside while Hina is from the city. Hina is struggling to support herself and her little brother while Hokada ran away from his family (due to family problem) thus must look out after himself.

    I've agreed with everything you've said so far...but....I disagree with your interpretation of Garden of Words. The entire conflict of the film is their age gap, which isn't a problem in platonic relationships (For example, Doc Brown and Marty McFly in Back to the Future) but it is a problem in romantic relationships, specifically.
    The idea is that everything about their relationship is a societal taboo. Not just the age gap, but also the fact that he is a student and she is a teacher and the whole reason they meet is because they were avoiding their societal obligations (going to school).
    The climax of the film occurs when he confesses his true feelings for her and she denies them, believing she's doing the right thing as a responsible adult...but in the end, making herself (and him) miserable.
    I think the message of the film is an extreme take on the question "is doing the right thing in service to society or your own happiness?"
    If there is no conflict, there's no story. If their relationship was platonic, there's no conflict.
