One of the best movies I've ever seen. Mike Leigh is a universal storyteller. I've never set one foot in England, but when I watched this movie, I saw people that I've known throughout my life.
One of my favourite Mike Leigh films, a wonderful portayal of a North London working class family. Totally funny with a tinge of sadness, works amazingly well.
I had to force myself to keep watching in the beginning but the last hour is SUPURB. I think it's SO real life you almost feel like a voyeur watching it.
It used to be on UA-cam. The full film, that is, but I checked recently and it's been taken down. Great film. I lived quite happily in North London in the 80s and this was fairly typical.
Not by way of disagreement but by way of elaboration: American here, and I totally identified with this movie; I've met these people here in the States as well. A sign of a cinema genius is that his movies will have universal resonance.
I was just wondering are they're going to be any more Mike Leigh films made with Timothy Spall apart from Life Is Sweet, Secrets and Lies, Topsy Turvy, All or Nothing and Mr Turner?
Finally found! The "yanked...racist!" bit has lived in my head for years. They used to show this on Bravo back when it was an amazing movie channel and not reality drivel. I knew it was Jane Horrocks, just didn't remember the twins were two actresses and not a dual role.
+cryingonion2 I so hoped you were joking - sadly I think you're not! It's films like this which constantly remind me why the UK has such a small, underwhelming film industry.
@@revol148 Mike Leigh is one of the greatest British film makers ever. He has to go to Studio Canal in France for most of his funding because we have pitifully poor funding of films in the Uk

I have only one question. Why Nikola doesn't want to have children is presented as something bad. She is definitely an unpleasant character, but a completely life position

Timothy Spall is Iconic in this!
A underrated classic.
Shit it is! Criminally underrated!
An
it is a Criterion Classic and an RT 95% - so you might mean "under watched".

As a working class north Londoner I agree.

The ending was amazingly moving and realistic. And no tidy resolution.

I'd bring you a pineapple. (Also, yeah, I remember when it was up. Watched it nearly a million times.)

+stnicholas54 Capitalists!!
Yes! 'Aubrey' (Timothy Spall) with his Radio 1 DJ style clothing and red glasses is a clearly recognisable 80s/early 90s north London type.
I just recorded it and Turner Classic Movies never seen it before. 89 Rotten Tomatoes interesting
This is a darling movie. Ive seen it many times.
PhancyPants99 Didn't you just want to hug Nicola?
Me too
Leigh shows life as it is really lived in this country. Don't know how he does it. Cast is amazing.

I loved this movie! Makes me remember all the good days, kinda sad :(
It was, once upon a time, available to watch (sans commercials) on UA-cam before they became a bunch of mean spirited tossers.
Amazing film!!! Alison Steadman
Wow. How did I not know that this film exists? Funny to see that a lot of the actors in this movie ended up in the Harry Potter series.
Absolute gold
my life IS a Mike Leigh film
And mine too good to see Pam without James Corden
Amazing film!!
i really loved that movie 😭
wonderful piece of life.

The funniest film I've ever watched. British films at it's best

Possibly my favourite ever film. Where is the title track? It used to be on youtube. Alison Steadman with the children dancing.

Whoa. Brilliant film and that preview showed too many of the highlights, IMO.

Agreed.
I love this music
English director who made Czechoslovakian films.
1:16 is that peter pettigrew?
The actors who play Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), and Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall) are all in this movie :)
love Barbra jane & Broadbent, mostly horrocks V
5 people have never tasted pineapple.
SLUGHORN AND LUPIN????
and wormtail lmao
Characters are too over the top and exaggerated. Leigh's best work was Nuts in May and Abigail's Party. Both very true to life.
I wonder how they voted in the Brexit referendum.
Bong Joon Ho brought me here
Slughorn, lupin and wormtail
Omg, now I NEED to watch this movie
Moaning martyle too
I barely made it through the trailer.
