If we look at the equation for Upper Operating Line in McCabe-Thiele method, you would notice that its slope (gradient) is determined by reflux ratio, as R got larger the slope gets steeper, there is less chance of creating a "bounce" or more horizontal line because the vertical line has to travel further down before eventually bounce and create a horizontal line. So generally, the less the space between the VLE curve and the operating lines , the more likely it is to form more stages and vice versa
