@@TheSew4realNot yet, its a very young tree, from last winter. But' already taller than 1m (3.28 feet). BTW, I put t outside for it to get some sun light and rain until end of September. Do you have one? And if so, is yours blooming?
Hi Euan You speak clearly (I'm partially deaf), so thanks for that. Love watching you and following the jacarandas. Could I make a suggestion that you specify "it's early spring" or whatever to give us an idea of timing please. Could you tell us the makeup of your soil please. Sand and ???. Many thanks Phil
Thanks for the update! Seems like these can grow real fast given the right conditions, that will become in nice tree in a few years for sure. I doubt I will be able to get the same vigour for mine here in Europe 😅
I have a tree near me that just dropped a lot of semi softwood branches , the one I grabbed was maybe a little over 5 feet . Could I plant that in soil if I prune it ?
Hey, it might be a little ambitious but if you prune it down to a short piece you might be able to get away with it. Just keep it somewhere warm that doesn’t get too much direct Sun
hey mate thanks for the vid I got a jacaranda shooting up from the ground about 2/3 inches tall, and put it in water for 1.5 weeks now in soil. How regularly do you think i should water it?
Hey mate, I water mine daily but they’re in small pots with well draining soil, and cop some brutal sun 😅 they like to dry out a bit. What kind of conditions do you have them in?
@@EuanEllery Hey thanks for the reply - i have it in a medium sized pot (about 6 inches tall) and i have it kept under a mesh sort of shade so its not complete direct sun 👍🏾
@@jasper-dq4ut Ah cool, maybe just do a finger test to see how quickly the soil starts to dry out and that should give you a good indicator :) sounds like a good set up though
You're welcome :) is yours grown from seed? If so it can take quite a while (7-14yrs) but you can often cut that down to 2 or more if it's grown from a cutting
I bought a jacaranda that is 40cm/15" tall (from a seed), should I start pruning and cutting now, or should I wait. When is it advisable to start the pruning to dwarf it? (P.S. it is very hot, all year sunny area north of the equator)
How tall do you want the bonsai? So long as you've got some leaves low down to prune back to still you should be fine. It is a good idea to let grow a bit so that you get a thicker trunk :)
Do the cuttings you took flower? Or does it need to establish for a period? Considering taking a cutting or just buying a more established tree if I’m going to have to wait either way haha
Hey Milly, it depends on the source tree really. They normally take about 20 years from a seed, but if you grow it from a cutting you can reduce that. So, if for instance, the source tree was maybe 10 years old you'd likely reduce your wait time by about the same. Hope that makes sense? :)
@@EuanEllery Indeed it does, I ended up pinching a new branch from a carpark near Garden City Mt Gravatt.. currently in water so hopefully it roots and I can transplant. Not sure how it'll go as a bonsai but an exciting experiment nonetheless Cheers, Milly
I just pulled a white cedar out from a drain near my house, similar to your jacaranda..... all tap root and nothing more. All the foliage died off within a few days but I'm hoping it will reshoot. Didn't know jacarandas grew from cuttings, so info please on whether it was hard or softwood cutting. Cheers!!
Hi Jonathan, you can yeah, one of mine I grew from a cutting. I put a bunch of clippings in cups of water on my windowsill and waited for the roots to start to show before potting them
3:14 to skip the updates and jump straight into the root pruning :)
Thos was very helpful. I'm so happy that I have a beautiful jacaranda. She'll always be keept inside, since I'm in Canada.
Hahah yes, I was in Canada a few years ago and as beautiful as it is that's a good idea! Gets so cold there :P

haha perhaps not, they do like a warm climate! But yes - I'm sure if you keep it in good soil and water it right your seedling will do quite well :)
Talk less demonstrate more. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your video...it's simple ...can you give some more on how to get thick trunk..thank you
Sure thing :)
Thanks for this straightforward instructional vid. 🙏 Will pruned flowering trees still bloom after being turned into bonsai?
Hi Horeb, if they're fed well they should bloom fine :)
Good

soil what else in there besides sand? Is this more like the Cactus/succulent one?
That would work well yeah 😊
hey mate thanks for the vid

@@EuanEllery Huh? I thought that the trunk gets bigger BECAUSE you start pruning, no?
@@HTaddict The trunks get bigger when you let it grow, but the pruning helps to develop taper and ramification :)

I have about a 4 foot in want to make a bonsai ,can I cut the top off
You should be fine to when it comes into spring and it begins to bud after losing its leaves in winter :)
Can you root a clipping?
Hi Jonathan, you can yeah, one of mine I grew from a cutting. I put a bunch of clippings in cups of water on my windowsill and waited for the roots to start to show before potting them
When is the best time to do this process ? Autumn ?
Probably best in spring, but so long as it's warm and the tree is healthy you should be fine
