- This is what I call my chainsaw therapy. I'll show you how to cut up a downed tree like Grandpa taught me to do it. This is the best way to keep your chainsaw from getting stuck in the wood. I also found a great piece of the tree to cut up for chainsaw milling.
Follow along as we explore and learn to build a homestead in middle Tennessee. In 2016 we packed up our three kids and decided to leave suburban life in order to rediscover our love of outdoors, and learn the necessary skills to build a homestead from scratch. As I’m getting older, 32 now with a young family; I am starting to appreciate the need for protecting oneself. An ounce of prevention/safety is worth a pound of cure. Thanks for setting a good example.
Good advice on making several partial cuts before doing the complete cut and rolling it over. I've always done it one at a time, but your way looks more productive.

Never thought of using the length of the blade as a measuring tool to get accurate lengths.. pretty sure that's stuck in my head now.
I can appreciate the trauma kit coming along. Also, great advice. I have a smaller chainsaw and am undertaking a larger tree this week so needed to figure out how to not get stuck. Thank you!

I love my backyard view here in Maine. But I was raised in a big city. And Maine the other half..😊 a 110’ tree fell and a forty foot branch! Lots of destruction! Many many wind storms never seen here.

Always be learning! That’s what I’m doing. I’ve got a lot of family up in the Main and NH area. In fact my Grandfather who taught me to run a saw was from up there. You’ve got lots of smart people to learn from!

I’ve recently started using my saw more and I use the same trick to avoid the pinch. I also use the trick of using my bar to measure my next cut. Good tips
We've got a bunch of trees down that I'll be cutting up this spring, so I'll be using all the little tricks to get more firewood put away for next winter.

Thx, very informative. I have some older felled trees that are "soiledl" and partly decomposed underneath - any suggestions for minimizing chain damage after brushing off as much of the soiled material and getting to it? Thx
You have the Easy Start on that saw. I have one that has it as well and I find that it works great. I read and hear a lot of negative stuff about them but I guess it's because people try to start them like a normal saw(?).
Yeah. I got reprimanded by the guy from STIHL when he saw me try to start it with a full hard pull after I first got it. Two quick half pulls and it starts every time.

I love the safety gear, in the last video I watched about "how to use a chainsaw" the F'ing guy was literally in shorts and a t-shirt with decksider shoes on. WTAF!!
It only takes one slip to be called peg leg for the rest of your life.
Any suggestions on a downed tree that is straight and flat on the ground but you can't roll it due to obstacles? In that case i will try to cut it as short as possible and lift it. I thought i saw some lay something on the ground beforehand or notch it at the stump but that is beyond me.
