ok -so your video is12 years old but I still have DW733 and I need to pull off the dust port every time I store it (It's on a flip cart I made). Your solution is brilliant. Thanks!
+Mr2at Glad it worked out for you. Care to tell the UA-cam Universe where you obtained the aluminum clips or what your workaround was? +Jim Rupert, I obtained some of these brackets but don't remember where from. I have never seen them for sale.
+fishfreak911 I used kitchen cabinet wall brackets. Very similar to your brackets but mine are a bit more industrial looking. I bought them from Amazon here in the UK. Once again thanks for the idea.
I may have to do the latch mod on my DW734 as the whole dust chamber wants to come off way too easily without the bolts. I hesitate to bolt it in as I want the compactness of folding up the outfeed ramp. Just bought it and set it up today. I just need to find some kind of attachment so that the port fits my Ridgid vac hose..
I have had this problem. Mine I think is old age and wear and tear. Your's sounds like something else. Make sure it is well cleaned around teh lifting screw, and secondly, try a little oil on the posts. This has helped me. Good luck Mr. Green!
I really like the idea of mounting the gauge on the front. I wouldn't go so far as to say it makes your planer accurate to within a thousandths of an, though. Sure, you can get it to to display such a number, but I'm not convinced a piece passed through could come anywhere near that kind of consistency. Ignoring calibration, I doubt if you sampled a piece in multiple locations it would be that consistent. If it were possible, you wouldn't hear cutting on repeated passes like you do.
The reason it.s get clogged is that you are reducing extraction port from full size 4 inch to 3 or 2.5 size and large pieces of waste can easily clogg the whole tool. What you need to do is simply get extraction with full size 4 inch pipe. Never reduce extraction ports,it also makes makes loads of mess because it.s not efficient and loads of waste comes back from front then.
Those self tapping screws you used that stick in to the dust collector, do they block chips? If so, why not use a bolt and go in from the inside with the nut on top. Might not be an issue but I prefer to bolt things rather than self tappers anyway. Great job on the tips though, I'm looking to buy a used unit right now.
Hi @rockthestrand, thanks for the careful thought you put into your comment. to be honest, I have not noticed an issue with the screws, as I used the shortest possible. I don't remember exactly, but they were only a quarter inch to three eights long. You could certainly use a nut and bolt and put the roundhead of the bolt inside. This would make clogging a non-issue. thanks again for your observation and comment.
Get the Ridgid; same basic planer with assisted chip removal like the higher end Dewalt .I don't even use my cyclone with mine; just a collection brute container with filtered exhaust outlet.
BeaulieuTodd. Of course it's not perfect. What I meant was that the Wixey reads out to the thousandth of an inch. That said, in my book, if I am withing 3-5 thousandths of my desired thickness, I am happy. And I indeed DO get that close on a consistant basis. Case in pon it, I just used the planer after 3 months of no use, and checked thickness with a Mitutoyo calipers and was within .003" of my desired thickness with no calibration.
Hi i tried that but you just can't get into the bit where the blades are, I'm gonna try coming up with some way of being able to remove the v shaped port easily but don't like his self-tappers sticking down into the port, BTW hit a staple today with it! doh!
Seven years later... But maybe others will want to address the same problem. I'm thinking that pop-rivets would be the way to go for mounting the brackets without leaving grapple hooks for the shavings to hang on.
Hi there. Sounds like you need a course in planer basics since thicknessing boards is what they are used for. try this video. ua-cam.com/video/vxyQJCMLCsI/v-deo.html
@@gary24752 Honestly , I've never even heard of a 3 blade replacement for this model, though there is available the awesome Byrd Shelix carbide insert cutterhead. Unfortunately, it costs more than the planer at $420.00! Much Quieter and less tearout.
send it back to Dewalt, it's broken! I've used Dewalt tools professionally for many yrs with no prob so if there's a fault the're the best people to fix it, prob their fault anyway if you've only used it 4 times.

Brilliant idea. I customised mine yesterday. Makes declogging so much easier.

Can you do a video on installing Wixey ?

Hi - I have a dw733 - is the correct Wixey depth gauge you show the WR503 please
It's the WR510. 👍

DeWalt HQ meeting now: did you see this Sierra guy on youtube? why did our R&D Dept. never figured this out?!
Ahahahaaaa, to their credit, they did bring me an early DW735 to test out and I helped develop their blade retention system. 😊
@@fishfreak911 good man yourself
I just bought a 733 for my toy making so hears hoping I don't any problems.

David Davis I don't recall him stating he's in the market for a new planer..
can you tell me where you got the brackets?
I'm not exactly sure, but you can Google aluminum Z clip and you'll get plenty of choices. Good luck!
I like the wixie thing, but the other mod is not necessary If you don't glue on the small port , just reach in and clear the stuck pieces.

Thanks for the great mod! I just bought one of these in mint condition and look forward to upgrading it with a spiral helix blade.

Do you know what those cabinet brackets are called? Or where to get them?
Jim, I happen to have several pairs. If you Paypal me 10$ with your address, I can send you some. Message me back for my PayPal address

Jim Rupert, thank you. I'll get em out to you soon! Thanks
Have you ever thought about updating the 733 cutter head to a 734 so you have three knives instead of two?
Nope. If I were to do that is simply upgrade to the 3-blade 2-speed 734 which I helped develop.
600 extra dollars I don’t have. Curious as to whether a 3blade head could be used on a 733.
