Accordion Performance in North Korea

In a recent trip to North Korea, we visited the Children's Palace in Pyongyang, where especially talented children are taught to hone their skills in arts and sports.
These girls performed on the accordian.

The name of the song is "We Will Go to Mt. Paektu." Paektu is the sacred birthplace of the Korean nation for both Sout and North Koreans. They also have a beautiful song entitled "Both Halla and Paektu Are MyHomeland"--Halla-san being the mountain found on Jeju Island, the southernmost part of Korea and Paektu-san being the northernmost part of Korea. Playing just ok....they need to work on dynamics and phrasing. The accordion has amazing abilities achieved through correct use of the bellows similar to good bowing on a string instrument or breath control on a wind instrument. Students need to be taught that....not just playing loud and flashy bellows shakes.
