I got my erhu yesterday..thought the technique would be just like the violin,...tried playing it last night and my mom came out of her room thinking the cat was in a fight outside.
omg LOLOL
+bubble pop2212
oh my god laugh out loud out loud???
+Auiuei You should take some classes then :P
Lol, as everything, it takes practice.
LOL!
I love the fragile "weeping" sound of the erhu. The way string instruments can bring out their sound, it's like they're singing whenever they play; the erhu's is between a soulful birds song and a weeping lady.
That is actually a really good way to put it
Mr Msan That's a stupid amount of words to say something simple: "It sounds good".
I love that description
MithranArkanere and even if you were right (I'm not, but it's just my opinion), by the way there would be no reason to call that "stupid".
MithranArkanere but how specific is that in describing the sound? Many things sound good in different ways
One of the few instruments that can sound so sad but also happy in an instant
Well... Violin by instantly changing the key.
The Allied Powers and speed..
thats true. The whole balllad for me had the sadness of an imperial war and the happiness of a villager party in a permanent swap.
Few?
Oboe
I know she is an incredible artist and the lead instrument, but lets not discount the harmony between her and the pianist. He is REALLY good and it completely compliments this arrangement. What an amazing piece of music and artists!
Bradley Wall Yeah, props to the pianist as well.
When I see this video....I think "This is how a good relationship should be...romantic or other. People who are different, but who complement each other."
YES!!!
@@DanielReyes-cd9qx I was just thinking this very thing last night.
Daniel Reyes What an amazing comment this is as well.
I'm just amazed at....
that's just two strings how do you get such a wide array of sounds out of that O_o
+skypjuh high skills are needed to play Erhu, otherwise,it will sound awful
Ciao chef Lev lol that goes for every instrument
+skypjuh Shortening and lengthening the part of the string that vibrates, but yeah i totally agree that it's amazing for just two strings.
+skypjuh must be China!!nowhere else that wud happen.Thank You China for Your musi, discoveries, culture etc.Greetings from Poland
Ciao chef Lev I agree, I've been learning it for 4 years and I'm still grade7.......
Yu Hongmei is, of course, brilliant: but let's hear a bit of applause for the pianist! A crisp, well-judged accompaniment that makes an excellent foil to the erhu's melodic line.
DieFlabbergast agreed
this is seriously the most peaceful sounding instrument I have ever heard.
Thank you Chinese martial arts movies for always playing these 😂
Lmaooo
Shaolin Hustlers
No instrument is more beautiful to listen to than the erhu
maybe pipa?
+William Z lol that one makes me want to crybecause my ears are bleeding
+걸왜 에반 Personally, the yangqin is one of the most beautiful instruments I have heard :D
+걸왜 에반 zither!
i agree, but no instrument is more painful to listen to then a poorly played erhu!
The melody actually made me wanna cry for no apparent reason.
That's how deep this is.
+Vitor Rodrigues isn't the erhu supposed to represent a human singing voice, probably why its so emotional
jablesmegee
Well, that seems a pretty credible reason.
+jablesmegee I don't know about what is intended to sound like what, but many instruments kinda sound like people singing. People playing music on wine glasses sound a little like people singing too, and of course other bowed instruments. Check out "man playing hallalujah on wine glasses" and you'll see what i mean :)
blazednlovinit i think theres a science behind the erhu tho, it has the same range or frequency,
"The erhu sounds similar to human voice, and can imitate many natural sounds such as birds and horse. It is a very expressive instrument, most well-known for playing melancholic tune, but also capable of play merry melody."
The erhu is known to have a very melancholic sound. The title for this particular piece of music may roughly be translated as "Memories of Yubei". Yubei refers to the northern part of the Henan province. Judging from the title and the melody, the music seems to be full of melancholy and nostalgia reminiscing the historical past of the Yubei area. You probably didn't know it but you clearly felt it. Hence the tears.
The mixing of cultures doesn't "ruin" anything. Beautiful music like this preserves China's musical history, even if a western instrument is thrown in. I think the Erhu and Piano sound wonderful together.
The erhu is one of the most beautiful instruments because it has the same range as a human voice, it literally touches us on an emotional and instinctual level. When the erhu sounds sad, we literally feel the sadness of another human being.
Positivo, se aproxima e muito da voz humana, faz nos lembrar uma bela voz feminina vocalizando uma canção .
the easiest way I found out about the erhu was the series' the legend of korra and avatar:the last airbender I am in love with those series' my mom gets annoyed cause I watch it. again and again and again
מח3ק
Same here.. it's what got me on the path to the Erhu and other Chinese instruments, love every sound of them. I watch both series over and over as well 😭😭
Venus Ishmael great shows
Venus Ishmael I got into it because of the Akatsuki no Yona anime (sort of an historical fantasy anime)! The character jeaha played this instrument and it sounded so good that I wanted to know what he was playing!! Then I found it!
Best series ever!
This video alone influenced me to go forth and purchase an Erhu of my own, and learn it's art.. And I have been doing such since I have gotten it. I have gotten quite good! not as good as her yet.. but that's why she's there.. to push me further and make me better.
Good luck to you buddy, it's a beautiful instrument (as they all are!).
Absolutely! Sounds of asia store, CA based so quick shipping.. got the Shanghai 4A, I believe. It's a professional rosewood erhu and it was only 180$ ! I love mine and I play it every day. Eason music (singapore based) has many more options and proceeds into higher qualities (imo) and shipping can be expensive. That's why I believe it's good to go with SOA first since it's relatively close most likey, and good shipping. Came pretty quick, too! Good luck on your journey!
;) You'll get it down!
Nate Miller did you really get yours for only $180????? I've literally searched for a good price for one and seeing you only paying less than 200 bucks for a rosewood erhu gives me so much hope :D
Nate Miller Hi, i have a question, my left hands middle finger to pinky are highly burnt to the point using them wouldn't be easy at all, is it possible to play using my right hand instead for the strings?
There are no words for China. To enter immediately into the spirit of a culture, one must listen to his music. The refinement of Chinese culture, sweetness that plucks the interiority. The erhu is the human soul that speaks, silent, cries, exists.
This is my ring tone on my phone i love it
Reading a book for my "China Today" class called 'River Town' by Peter Hessler. When he described what an erhu sounded like I knew I had to find a video of one being played! He wasnt exaggerating. This is so beautiful, Im getting choked up! 😍
Such a beautiful and weeping sound... It brings tears to my eyes.. And I am not even Chinese. Regards from Greece. She is great !
erhu is a traditional miusic in cn,二胡是传统乐器
The instrument is of mongolian origin
Edit; it originated FROM Mongolian instruments
I'm crying too
@@lil_weasel219 its from the west, central asia

Erhu - what a beautifully sad instrument, like leaves falling during a lament. Sounds like it was made to mimic crying or meditation.
Just finished writing that when the piece got fun and cheerful. Instrument is like crickets or meerkats. :)
The skill. The phrasing. That precise control of the Erhu, and all with absolute perfect pitch. Just absolutely gorgeous. And that pianist ... they are so locked in together. Just beautiful.
I found out a out this instrument from my penpal from China. She told me she loved this instrument so I looked it up on here and I’m not disappointed. I never knew about this instrument but i love how calming it is.
This music is as beautiful as she is. The instrument is so "simple" but elegant and refined and beautiful.
I love her emotion as she plays.
Her beauty brings tears to my eyes.
I fell in love with the Erhu after i first heard it in Uncharted 2. Mainly the Marco Polo theme.
YES
this may be the most beautiful instrument I've ever heard
...also looks like the hardest one to play that I know of o_O
One of the hardest Chinese instrument. It's very easy for you to play out of tune even if you got the position correct. This is because, the amount of strength you use to press the string also affects the tonality.
Look up the sitar
Listen to Indian Sarangi. You'll like it a lot
@@chingles2404 so the trombone? Done and done
The erhu is one of greatest instruments ever.
one minute on stage takes decades of work......yu h., you have definately mastered the erhu, it was a pleasure to hear you play, thank you so much!
When you realize that the erhu was the instrument that was played in the legend of Korra that you have been wondering about for years...
in my opinion the erhu produces the most beautiful sound of all instruments. it feel.... inherently sad.. but i dont think it really is. i believe it is instead inherently honest and passionate. it is melodic and it demands your attention, because it has a message to deliver.
If you've heard that instrument before but you don't know where, you probably heard it in Avatar or Korra.

I listen to so much music little shakes me yet there are moments in this performance that are so fine its as if she is weaving with a strand of silk through a cloud and I'm amazed
Sound as deep and profound as matching the Empire's 6,000 years of civilization and Hong-mei has grasped the soul of the art and soul of the nation. Few outsiders really can understand and appreciate!
thanks !
she is also unworldly pretty and highly cultivated !
6000 years? isn’t that too much? iirc it was 2000 years B.C.E and 2000 years C.E, unless you also count late Neolithic periods, in which case society gets a whole lot elder
China is closer to 5000/4000 than 6000 years old, still a very lovely comment
@@supermouse73 oof... thats off, around 4000-5000 year with folk tales etc... but the evidences proves that it is more around 2000-3000 years max..., a bit earlier than romans...
appreciating music has nothing to do with where you're from!
The erhu is such a beautiful instrument, a lot of emotion can be brought out of it. You can really feel with the music.
Not only does she play beautifully, but the performer is beautiful herself, and her movements as she plays are beautiful as well. She isn't just playing the instrument, she's singing with it.
I don't know what to say. Both the musicians are extremely talented and tremendously practiced. The erhu has piqued my interest since I heard of its name in a few books I read. I tend to be a very curious person and did my research on this instrument. I can't even imagine how long it would take to learn even the basics of playing the erhu. two strings that can make so many different astoundingly beautiful sounds must surely be worth learning. what makes me sad is how few people I've asked have never even heard of an erhu. it's beautiful and is even possible to move someone to tears (which I have tested on a few of my friends). I wish this kind of music and instrument would be better known by those I have encountered.
+Era Darksky It's Ok, basically all Chinese know this instrument that that alone guarantees that the erhu is extremely well known
I suppose he means in the Western world of music and culture
Did you ever get the pianists name?
I have always loved the sound of this instrument and wondered what it was called and what it looked like. Now I finally know and can find more of this beautiful music! Thank you for sharing!
Also I think that traditional Chinese music should be more popular. It's so beautiful but often is overlooked. Really I appreciate all kinds of traditional music and think that we shouldn't forget about our (and other cultures') roots.
one of the most underrated instruments out there
Playing the Erhu like that must take incredible skill and practice, there are no marks or guides to finger placement. Getting the right notes out of it means always putting your fingers in just the right place on the strings. The speed and precision with which she plays is amazing. The pianist is good too.
Incredibly beautiful beyond description. Ancient yet timeless and speaks to the soul. Love and respect from an Armenian.
Erhu - Ballad of North Henan Province 豫北叙事曲
Absolutely beautiful!
Gene Emerson thank you!
I've heard some pretty bad erhu, but this is FAR better than anything I've ever heard before. It was beautiful.
The erhu is a really difficult instrument to play; though in theory it is like a violin, the techniques involved are very different. It's really hard to switch strings because of the fact that the bow is actually between them. The fingerings are also farther apart than on a violin.
Switching strings is not difficult at all, it's a natural movement. I play Erhu and also provided an Erhu for my adult Daughter to play. I'm just ok, not someone who should be recorded, still I do have my moments of really nice music as I play upon my Erhu.

Sometimes the erhu sounds like human crying itself.
Same!!!! Whyyy?????
I love how much peace is in her eyes while she plays !
This is a terribly epic piece of music. I am also practicing this song, but I bet I'll never play as beautiful as her :)

we are all culturally richer thanks to world peace and trade and the Internet.
Just got back from Foshan and finally was able to buy my first Erhu, which has been a dream of mine since I was around 10yo. I'm still unable to play it correctly yet its sound is almost healing to me, no matter how little I can play.
I can't wait to be able to perform simple pieces.
那个二胡是真的好听啊! 我热爱听到中国传统的音乐!
Very beautiful music. I want to research the story of Henan province now to understand how this song is a reflection of its history.
a beautiful piece played to its highest standards. I heard this master piece was only played by man during the 70s, but she has certainly done and better.. I salute and bow..

Just love this music, so pure.

this came up in my feed in 2021!! such a great performance!!
The sounds these artists get out of this instrument is amazing. The crying of Time, and of ancient birds and lost winds...I wish I had this talent.
Wow! Absolutely brilliant! Moving, energetic! Amazing!
This is so soulful... Thank you for the upload...
There's something about the erhu's low tones that sounds like some melancholy soul holding back the tears while singing.
I can't breath while watching them playing the instruments. They're breathtaking.
Para mí, el Erhu es el instrumento más bello.
