I’m glad Taylor has found the space to do monologues. This is what I was most excited about when steven Colbert announced she would have a late night show
And her commentary on the monologues during the monologues is next level. She’s so comfortable with it, it’s fantastic to watch. My favourite a while back was when the show went off the rails and she said “I’m going to go back to the teleprompter now, and it IS going to feel jarring” 😂
THANK YOU... it needed to be said. Love how internet people can have such a problem with two people who had the time of their lives, did their dream role and found a family of people along the way. If you have a problem with that that's on you.
it’s just because it stopped the immersion and it was harder to suspend the disbelief. also, it feels a little lazier. you’re so right, tho, i laugh when people say stuff like that imagine the dedication it would’ve shown if the movie was shot in latin lmaoooo
Yeah, Denzel didn't take me out of the movie at all. But that guy's video seemed more like a clever way for him to present his Denzel impression than actual criticism.
As someone who's old enough to remember when the original Gladiator came out... people had problems with the accents in that movie too. And I still don't know what the issue is. It's ancient Rome, they shouldn't be speaking English in the first place. Who cares what accent the actors use. British accents aren't any more "Roman" than American ones. And if anything, a mix of accents makes sense. Ancient Rome was a mishmash of cultures and ethnic groups.
Well, I remember when the original “Ben Hur” movie came out. (Not really, but play along with me here.) There was no controversy about the accents then, because it was a silent movie.
@@EmoDragracer Hrm... Gotta keep context and relativity in mind here. I don't have after midnight's audience demographics in front of me, but i'd guess the average age is closer to 24 than legit grandpa. Somewhere around Taylor's age perhaps. Is she old enough to remember the original release ? What % of her fans are ? Suely less than the general population. As fans discussing the show, that demographic is part of our context.🖖
People complained about the sharks, which can be found anywhere, but not about the chocolate, which only existed in the Americas? That's some historical accuracy buffs there! 😄
My gut reaction was that Cynthia did not know what the interviewer meant when she said "taking the lyrics of Defying Gravity and really holding space with it."
She could be the scandalous American cousin who got sent to stay with her English relatives to quell rumours of her many love affairs with men and women
Everybody crapping on Denzel for his accent but not a single actor talks with his hands in any ancient Roman movie. Can you imagine Italians not talking with their hands?
I love this, not gonna see either movie, but it is fun to hear about them. Taylor's takes are exactly what I wanna hear sometimes. Temecula is a nice town, I lived in San Diego, and we would pop up there once in awhile, very nice as a tourist. Guess not so nice as a resident.
as a kid i would watch old movies on... TBS or something and i just LOVED it when the supporting actors had theater training and used their native English or trained "Mid-Atlantic" accents (movies from the 30's to 60's) and then the upcoming Hollywood star in the lead role just had their New York or Midwestern accent. Tony Curtis takes the cake and MAKES ME SO HAPPY in Spartacus: some masterful thespian playing a general, sarcastically reading off his skills as a personal attendant slave as tries to join Spartacus revolt as a soldier: "...and for whoom did you practice these wonderouuusss talents?" Tony in his total NYC/Brooklyn badass: "Fo my masta's childrren, whom I also twought tha classics." 😂 it's da best!!
I was part of the live audience at this show at Paramount Studios, and it was amazing! She’s incredibly talented-you guys should go see her perform live!
Okay, I gotta call BS on this whole accent thing. Yeah, Denzel's accent wasn’t Roman, but neither was anyone else’s. Since when do we all agree that Romans need to have some quasi-proper British accent? It’s Rome-they spoke Latin. So unless someone’s speaking actual Latin, nobody’s got the ‘proper’ accent 😂.
this!!! i swear to god, people for some reason think a more “historically accurate” or a more “proper” accent is always a british or borderline british one, no matter the time period, the geographical location or the native language in that place/time. i get it, british english existed before american english, so there’s the association of “british = old”. but let’s not pretend that it is “proper” lmfaoo i can only imagine a project where a movie like this is shot in the language it should be. it’s super impractical, but it would be so badass to see a movie about the roman empire in latin lmao. the accent would surely still be off, and i bet everything i have the latin would be inconsistent/badly translated/inaccurate and a mix of different eras of latin, but it would be cool as hell
@chargestone96 I get where you're coming from, but let’s dig deeper. Denzel Washington’s accent stands out, sure-but isn’t that the point? The Roman Empire was incredibly diverse, spanning from North Africa to the British Isles and all over. It makes sense that people from different regions would speak differently. If anything, the idea that all Roman characters should have a quasi-British accent is a cinematic convention, not historical accuracy. Now, let’s address Denzel specifically. He’s the only Black actor in the main cast, and visually, he already stands apart from his counterparts. Wouldn’t it make sense for his character’s speech to reflect that difference too? It reinforces the idea that Rome was a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. Also, just to be clear, I’m not knocking the joke about his accent-it was funny! But I think it’s worth challenging the notion that his performance was less immersive because he didn’t adopt the ‘expected’ accent. If anything, his natural accent could enhance the portrayal of Rome’s diversity. What do you think?
“I don’t know what’s happening...” I love how Cynthia said that. Relatable! I probably won’t see the movie, but I love how emotional people get about it. Unless they’re super mean about it - that I DON’T like.
Cynthia is an incredibly talented singer. I also think Cynthia has morphed into a fever dream she had as a kid of what she imagined being a famous person should be. Every time she gets asked an interview question she bursts into tears and pretends like she discovered the cure for butt cancer.
Nobody speaking Modern English sounds like an ancient Roman. So if you want to make the accents authentic, have the characters all speak Latin. I’m sure all 16 people who sit through that version will be very appreciative.
Why is Taylor so clutch..? You're on my top 6 woman... Josh Johnson, Aunty Donna, James Acaster, Randy Feltface, Fern Brady, and last but definitely most; Taylor Tomlinson... Tbh, men being objectified to ridiculous levels has become the new standard for press tours, promos, pretty much everything. To me, it's gross no matter who is on the receiving end because it dehumanizes and demeans the objectified person. I do get that some people feel like, "Guys, it's your turn to be treated like a plaything after women have been objectified for so long!" But that's not a way forward - that attitude only holds all of us back.
The Wicked press tour has been such a circus. It's been really entertaining to watch. 😂 I did cry during "Defying Gravity" and at the end of the movie so what do I know?
I wish you would add custom captions to these for hard of hearing people. I could have sworn the one's in the past had great captions one of the reasons I thought this was good. But now only auto generated are available.
0:55 If someone got in front of the audience at a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening and tried to do this, they'd be drawn and quartered in the parking lot outside. TO THIS DAY! Why does the gladiator cast even have accents? They spoke Latin back then. If anything, a New York Italian-American accent would be closer to reality than a british one. Lol, they even colonize the past.

With Denzel just using his regular voice, it just means he's big enough that he just has to show up and its all good. Same way Jack Nicholson just had to be Jack in The Departed, no attempt at an accent required.
Oh that's where the holding space meme came from? I thought it was because of how they spaced out defying gravity with so many long pauses between different parts of the song that the entire thing felt like it took 15 whole minutes
You think they spaced it out too much but you actually watch the stage show and it's spaced out more or less the same, it's just the soundtrack version removes the parts in between.
Please explain to me (that’s rhetorical) why we think Romans spoke in a British accent? And in English? This accent debate is nonsense. News flash, Romans spoke in Latin and we have no idea what their accents sounded like.
