Discarded Furnace Blower to Shop Fan Conversion

- Today we investigate the ease at which something worth nothing becomes something very useful. As the title suggests, an old and discarded 110 volt blower assembly out of Brand X gas furnace is transformed into a shop accessory. This is one that's at least 30 years old, but its also got plenty of life left in it as a device used daily during the hot summer months to help a fella (or gal) keep their cool.
This is a little fan that's capable of delivering 1,000 cubic feet of air (CFM) per minute on high speed. So figure the actual size of your particular shop by multiplying the lengh x width x height. When you get than number divide it by 1,000 and you'll see how many minutes of running it takes to move enough air to completely fill your shop. For instance, a shop 30'x30'x10'=9,000. So every nine minutes it will move enough air to totally fill every square inch of your shop. That would be more important if we were looking to this as an exhaust fan for removal of dust and /or fumes. In this case,we are only wanting to create air movement across the area where we are concentrating our work, so the satisfaction level is much easier to attain.
Unfortunately this is a fan that I put together for this function at least 10 years ago and the work to accomplish it is not done on the video. We do, however, cover the vast majority of details to do the work. A simple two speed wiring diagram is shown only for the convenience of indicating exactly what I do to make these things work, and is not intended to be a DIY instructional video. As always ,I do NOT provide Do It Yourself videos and do not intend for them to be used as road maps for electrical work. If you do have the basic knowledge and understanding of electrical circuitry you should be able to easily figure out for yourself a safe way to accomplish the same action. #blower, #shop, #wiring - Розваги
Thank you my friend. I built one back in the mid 80's Still going. It has a belt drive motor. The motor I use was made back in the 50's. : ) I just keep everything oiled well. As always my friend I liked and shared. All my very best to you and yours.
Oh yeah the old belt drives were really good. If you had a fancy one, it was a TWO SPEED belt drive !! Those are few and far between though, but we had to add those to the old furnaces when we added central air to a 'heat only' furnace back in the early '70's.
41 years ago, when we bought this old farm house, there was a junk 220v air conditioner unit on the dirt floor of the machine shed.
I took the small fan out of it, made a bracket out of scrap metal and hung it on the wall behind my work bench, I wired it up to 110 and plugged it in.
Last year, it wouldn't start up when plugged in, but give it a bit of a spin and it works. 😁
Hahahaha....good story. Some of those old motors just won't die !! On one workbench I have a fan-pack of 4 small paddle fans that sent cooling air across the mainframe of a commercial computer bank. They were old when I got 'em and have been running now at least 15 more years !!

Well, its a cheap and simple way to use 2 of the speeds on the motor instead of just one. I repurposed commercial rotary multi-position switches to switch 3 and 4 speeds too. But if you have to buy the parts, the two light switches is the way to go, just gotta make sure its a 3 way for the speed selection. Thanks for watching today Richard.

I have made a few of those for friends, i recommend that chicken wire be screwed to both sides of the squirrel cage to keep Noisy cats and other animals from getting hurt whenin use, even smaller gaped wire for use arond kids.
Yessir, a very good idea Tom. I've done it on others in the past. Little fingers seem to find bad places to get poked into. Years ago one of my dogs wagged his tail right at the wrong time next to a belt drive blower.....Yeah, he yipped a little !!
Oh and thank you for showing how to wire a three speed. I have a blower from a heat pump I will need to wire up. All my very best. I meant to say that in my first comment. Old brain not work so good : )
They are getting fancy with some of the new motor...they are called ECM motors and are very expensive to replace and will not work as these style old motors do. I haven't paid too much attention to them, but they are Electronically Commutated Motors. Too much fancy stuff to do a simple job, Bobby !!

Now I understand why our squirrel cage fans to electric motors quit. I just plugged them into 110 and let them run full blast.
Heck yeah....it's like overloading a little 4 cylinder truck with an 8 foot bed !! An unlimited load will work it to death. That's what ductwork does. It LIMITS the amount of air able to enter the inlet of the fan, so its load is limited.
I mounted my blower on a wood frame an on two casters ( like you said ) and use it to blow sanding / sawing dust right out the door ( don't have any neighbours to complain about the dust ) These are really good blowers, aren't they?
Hot dang, you better believe it, they are good for many applications. I've used condenser fan motors as exhaust fans as well. They won't allow themselves to work very well when exposed to static pressure though. But squirrel cages are designed for that application and work very well for what you use yours for.

Just another way to make the shop more comfortable in hot weather. If you have an old pot belly stove for heat, you can just set the blower behind it and circulate the heat better too !!
