  • Tucked away and just a stone's throw from the Midland Main Line near Chesterfield was the BR depot of Barrow Hill. Formerly known as Staveley Roundhouse, Barrow Hill was used as a stabling point rather than a depot and by the time of this visit, it no longer had any locomotives with the shed code BH. The last three to carry that designation were 3 Class 08 shunters in 1987. It was finally closed by BR in February 1991 and shortly after fell into decline. Fortunately, a preservation group was formed which acquired the land and after much hard work in restoration, Barrow Hill re-opened its doors to the public in 1998 and has since become a great success hosting thousands of rail enthusiasts with their wide collection of both diesel and electric locomotives. Further details of the venture can be found here www.barrowhill...

Nice video. I was fortunate enough to visit back in the mid 70's. Back then the roundhouse was full of 20's and 25's

I can remember standing at the bus stop on my way home from the nursery in the mid 70's and being amazed at the sheer number of lines of the goods yard.
