Hi, I'm a retired railwayman living in Devon whose major interests lie in transport, particularly old railway locos and aircraft, world travel and have a particular fondness for all things Spanish. I've been hosting UA-cam shorts of late with an interest in growing the channel by entertaining (hopefully), other enthusiasts. Take a dib in and view some of the videos, it all helps.
Fire Damaged 85017 at Coundon Road, Coventry
Following an overnight incident where AL5 Electric loco caught fire at Berkswell, the fire brigade were in attendance the morning after as the engine had been previously moved to the safety and convenience of the signalbox at Coundon Road. The incident marked the end of 85017's career as the locomotive was subsequently moved to Crewe and then onto Glasgow. She was finally scrapped some years later by MC Metals, Springburn in May 1993.

Locosheds in Scotland
Переглядів 1,2 тис.7 годин тому
A brief look at two small locosheds in Scotland that no longer exist - Grangemouth shed and Thornton. As the crow flies these locations weren't too far apart either side of the Forth estuary and at the time of filming, class 26s were very thin on the ground. Moving north to Thornton and days before closure, our cameraman records a small handful of locomotives stabled between duties alongside a ...

The amazing sight of Class 33s in Scotland
Переглядів 1,8 тис.16 годин тому
Having spent the majority of their working lives on the Southern Region of British Rail, the Class 33 is not a locomotive one would readily associate with Scotland. However three class 33 locomotives were sent to Scotland on 1st October 1999. 33025 (grey/yellow) and 33030 (EWS livery) were allocated to Motherwell, and outbased at Aberdeen for local freight duties whilst 33019 (grey/yellow) was ...

Hockley Station (Birmingham) in the 1960s
Переглядів 1,9 тис.День тому
Just a mile north of Birmingham's Snow Hill Station was Hockley station. It served as an intermediate station on the Great Western Railway's London Paddington to Birkenhead line not only serving the residents of the Hockley area of Birmingham but playing host too to a number of enthusiasts and photographers. Here are extracts shot on silent 8mm cine camera film showing both freight and passenge...
Nuclear Traffic to Sizewell 'B'
Переглядів 921День тому
On Suffolk's coast near to the villiage of Sizewell is Britain's newest nuclear power station. The site consists of two nuclear power plants, one of which is still operational and is known as 'Sizewell B'. Trains to and from the complex have ran for many years transporting nuclear spent fuel to the Sellafield spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facility. On a warm and sunny June day in 2000 the fla...

Working Banbury North Signalbox
Переглядів 1,2 тис.14 днів тому
For a very brief period and during a desperate staffing crisis, I ended up filling in for a few shifts at the busy Banbury North Signalbox. It was the year 2000 and the box still had another 16 years of life left. Both Banbury South and Banbury North finally closed on August 8th 2016 with control passing over to West Midlands Signalling Centre.

Return to Bedlam Lane Crossing, Coventry in 1986

Trainspotting at Coventry Station in 1962
Переглядів 1,9 тис.21 день тому
Before the arrival of electrification and with the newly-opened power signal box, the new modernised Coventry Station still played host to numerous steam-hauled trains. In this short extract some examples of these are to be seen including a special excursion train along with regular services and indeed Duchess 46240 'City of Coventry' also making an appearance.
Haulage in the Highlands - 1980s
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
Another find whilst trawling the archives is this silent Super 8 cine film of a group of lads haulage-bashing in the 1980s in the far north of Scotland. Class 37s still dominated the scene during this time with the odd Class 26 filling in for failures and other services.

The 'Crompton Colliery' railtour was a 'Pathfinder' tour that started in the early hours at Crewe station on the 20th November 1999 and incorporated a number of colliery lines in the East Midlands which included Calverton, Gedling and Bentinck Collieries. The cookers never got that hot when I was a driver
I agree with other comments on here. It is amazing to see how Coventry has changed. The 80's being such a memorable decade. Some beautiful cars on the road. Too young to drive then. Thank you for the videos.
Some beautiful classic cars here. You could actually get a space, to park on Queensland Avenue.
Fantastic to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks John, oh dear another Sparkler gets a bit warm. This one was a regular at Carlisle new yard and Upperby Carriage Shed for the Manchester Pullman 10 years earlier.
This is on the Coventry to Nuneaton line I think. Perhaps this happened before the passenger service was restored to that line in the late 80s? A quick look on Google Maps shows no signalbox any more, and new houses have been built next to where the locos are parked.
Proper train, proper signals
What date was this?
The date is on the video, right at the beginning!
Possible rail industry factoid (?) One member of the pop group Lieutenant Pigeon ( ' Mouldy Old Dough ' ) was a signalman at Coundon Road for a while .
It was the same chap who filmed this.. ;-)
👍
The hours i spent in the 1980s looking over that wall at 0:29 during the blue British rail era. Took lots of photos. Interesting to see the WCML before its electrification. Unfortunately roade cutting is all fenced off now to the public so the days of spotting down there are long gone.. Many thanks for this great video of times gone by.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Well captured.
Rare bit of footage there good Sir
Brilliant!!!!!!!…... Absolutely bloody brilliant... Thank you so much for posting a beautiful nostalgic video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I wonder how or why it happened as it was being pushed or pulled by the other loco, would it have still needed some form of electrical power to move even though it wasn't connected to overhead wires?.
It was dragged off its train with the Class 31 and moved to Coundon for the fire service to attend.
Gosford Street and Gosford Green look so different. So many buildings are gone, especially where Sky Blue Way now is.
Wow you actually drove past my old house!
This was before Sky Blue Way was built? Binley Road looks quite different but everywhere else hasn't changed much. I was hoping to see more of the city centre to see how it looked when I was a little baby.
There's some interesting stuff in there - the 6 wheelers in the breakdown train and the Caprotti Black 5
Very good!
Thanks!
Thank you again
Always welcome
Thanks for the memories John. I visited both sheds a few times back in the 80's chasing those hard to get Scottish class 20's, along with Dunfermline Townhill shed.Great times they were and now that i live in Scotland i spend my time filming mainly class 66's up here. Got any more videos like these ? Regards, Colin.
Hi Colin, Yes there are plenty more in the pipeline to be edited. Stay tuned! ;-)
It was great hearing the sound of Sulzers in Aberdeen again.
My Grandad, Henry "Harry" Roper worked in the parcels department at Hockley. He did 51 year's on the GWR and BR until his retirement. I remember him taking me on the diesel railcar from Bilston to both Hockley and Snow Hill. He was well respected by his work colleagues. I still have his clock which was presented to him after 45 year's of service.
Eric Pollards antique selling days 😅
Thanks for keeping this history alive.
Superb shots from the grubby yet still majestic BR green Duchess to a random B1 on a birds eye rake of wagons
Many thanks!
Epic! As a kid I would cycle to a bridge near Chichester station to see the double header 33's working the Brighton to Bristol train just one train on a Saturday, we didn't get many loco's on that line so a double header was an awesome sight. This was 45 years ago I can't believe they are still going!
Thanks for the memory of 45550 which I saw only once in the late 1940's exiting Nottingham on the Trowell branch. Being a young lad I was so disappointed it was not named that it stuck in my memory to this day
A very noble class of engine the Patriots. The last originals went in 1962 to the Horwich graveyard.
Awesome :)
Thanks 😁
Those straight eight sulzer engines just sound great. Paired up they're pretty good.
Thanks for the memories.
Very interesting, Birmingham,a tradegy what's happened to it. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome
Great footage many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Never knew that
Oh what great days ,the best of my life.
Excellent video John loved the close up shots.
Many thanks!
Brand new EE Type 4 in there too!
Those diesels have been coming to the rescue of every make of locomotive for 60+ years 👍👍 great yolks . 1:11
Lovely old steam locos
Greater days indeed. Trent Valley diversions for electrification I would suggest. Breakdown crane had an interesting array of long lifers in attendance. 👍👍👍
Love the sound of Cromptons ❤❤❤❤
Interesting!
great video!
Inter city trains
Had forgotten all about those 33's being based in Scotland for a while. Never got to see them north of the border myself so thanks for sharing.
A lovely ending the night sky
I like the class 33 disels they are like the class 26s diseals from the 1980s they were classic trains they will never be forgotten Stuart
Wonderful! Thank you for posting this film.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always loved the 33s….saw loads of them down South 🙂 33030 looked fab wearing EWS livery! Thanks for the video!!
Thanks for the watch.
Great film. Thanks very much.
