  • This Saturday, November 13 Blackfish Charter was, simply put, amazing. We limited in under an hour with some nice sized tog mixed in.
More importantly, and as described in the video, a valuable lesson was learned about rod selection when jigging. Let me know what you think.

With the type of jigging we do, just before and after either tide seems to work best.

Started building my own rods a year ago. This past season we used primarily RodGeek 730 blanks on our boat and found they are perfect for the light tackle jigging. Nice soft tip. Def check them out if looking into a custom rod in the future.

I agree. For tog jigging it’s all about the tip. I use a 6’3” shimano trevala s. ML The medium light gives it such a sensitive tip but when it loads up it got back bone. Very similar to the slim wave that skinner uses but higher end. I like the slim wave but the trevala s is the slim wave just better quality. I think the night ranger is good rod but it’s a different animal then what we need for tog jigging. It’s different then what Elias does in north Carolina with the night ranger. when comes to tog jiggin for us it’s gotta be a lighter action “jiggin” rod. A regular like st croix medium heavy rod that we would throw soft plastic for striper with I don’t like for tog jiggin

The fast action is way up front on the rod on the St Croix and Slimwave. I ask about SPJ rods as they seem to be to slow for jigging blackfish as you cant set the hook quick enough with the slower action of rod. Maybe in 10-20’ of water is ok but i havent had much success with them in 60’+ . Im fishing a 6’5” Centuar UL Combat Arm SPJ. Any experience with SPJ in deeper water?

Great vid as always and awesome fishing. The rod can definitely make the difference. I find it also depends on how they’re hitting that day. I’ve had days with a stiffer rod and they’re just slamming the jigs. Other days I’m doing better then my buddies cause I got the lightest rod on the boat feeling every little tap and pick up. And like we all do had days I can’t catch a cold lol. Happy holidays capt and tight lines. 🎣🎣🎣

Enjoy your videos but this one broke the cardinal rule. I live here and you live here but there are a lot of people who come out here blackfish season. Only ever see a few people at a time on that spot. Next year it will be interesting. Guess you’ll have more “Sweeney moments” of people fighting over spots. When I moved here 20+ years ago you could fish the Lawns on Fluke opening day with a decent crowd of knowledgeable fisherman. Fast forward to the Internet crowd and you could walk from boat to boat. People short drifting, waking, and a general lack of courtesy. I don’t fish it any more. Besides the fishing there isn’t anything like it was. Sorry for the rant but like I said in the beginning I enjoy your (and Skinner’s) videos. Never to old to learn but please let those who want to fish the waters out here learn just like you and I did. Happy and Healthy New Year!
