Another great video. I’ve been using Apple CarPlay and Apple Maps since purchasing my ‘22 ID. 4. I’ve tried to like the VW native navigation; however, it’s just seemingly missing. Thing that the VW navigation system does very well is travel lane identification, route planning for needed vehicle charging and very accurately predicting arrival SOC. There are other Apps that will do the same so I’ve relegated the VW navigation to backup use. Thanks for this video and All the Best, Art, Oceanside, CA.
Just for your info. All MEB cars build after July 2024 MY25 have software version 5.0. In this software even the AR HUD display works in the same way for Apple Maps as with the build-in. For my ID.7 I use only the build-in because the route planing is very precise. It will predict the SOC to +-1% including topography. I haven’t tested if the charging feature of Apple Maps works now with MEB 5.0.
It’s a feature which was initially only available in the US, but with Apple Maps now having live charger availability over here as well, I would hope it works for the route planning too.
This is why I gave up being an early adopter. The "new" software and underlying hardware are a massive improvement, actually so good that IMHO CarPlay - apart from media-player duties - is now the worse alternative. Btw. the _A Better Route Planner_ app, which can read the car's SoC via a Bluetooth LE OBD2 adapter, is a viable alternative for EV route planning.
While I also wish for ID. cars to gain EV SoC signaling into CarPlay - which in a utopian best-case scenario would allow to skip optioning the (albeit really good) built-in satnav when buying an ID. - it's not that surprising that Porsche supports this while VW et al. does not. Porsche does not use VWs infotainment platform and develops its own infotainment software.
It's funny, I did notice that iPhones connected to CarPlay in my Buzz stay very cool, even when connected wirelessly, but Android phones connected get very hot, whether wireless or wired. If CarPlay is using vehicle-provided GPS, it would explain this difference. Not sure who to blame for it, I wouldn't put it past either VW or Google to screw this up.
It's an Android problem. I had this issue with my Android (Samsung S22 Ultra originally and now a Google Pixel) and my BMW. Horrible problem, esp if you don't keep the A/C blasting it. Drains the battery super fast and leaves you with a baking hot phone.
It gets better with time and Updates. They are just soooooooooo slow to get it done. And They totally underpowered the system up till the new versions. And when compared to Tesla uldating everything every second Day, vw`s once a year Tactic is just slow. BIGGEST issue for me is the compeltly poorly navigation and total lack of opportunist to sort / Pick chargeing companies i want to use and not just the Big sea of what-ever the car thinks.
Hi Martin Karel, I love your content! I'm interested in discussing a potential collaboration. Could you let me know the best way to reach you? Thanks!😊
Never heard of dead reckoning before, great explanation and demonstration. Am tempted by a used etron, like a 2021 model and am curious how carplay integration is with that, vs the ID.3, if anyone knows?

What's SOC in this case?
Interesting, I did not know before that state of charge integration was possible with CarPlay. Might have to buy the Taycan instead of the ID3 now 😅

I am content with VW nav now. Especially because you can find a destination in the VW app nav and send it to the car. No fiddling with the car nav
Nice video. Thanks 👍

The id3 is fantastic car, kids love the built in games and Apple Car Play is wonderful, Audible is the best thing since sliced bread.
The only issue left is that the wheel is on the wrong side. ;-)
You mean the right side? 🤪

i consider any car which rely on external systems for "infotainment" as broken
