Walter Carvalho I think it mostly has to do with opera being set apart from other media as the art of the privileged. The pageantry and aristocratic roots have basically cemented opera as "that thing rich people do", like polo or pissing on the peasantry.
I'm a big fan of symphonies, concertos, and sonatas, but to be honest I don't really enjoy music with singing. Operas, lieder, etc. just don't interest me for the most part.
I used to think that until I heard Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten- an opera about a fisherman who is driven to suicide after being accused of being a paedophile. It's bloody brilliant and opened my eyes to other operas. Partly I think it's the fact that it's in English and the style of singing is relatively pure and comprehensible, so you can properly get into the story and words.
OK but imagine the vampire who lived through every one of those composers. "I fucked that composer. That composer. That one too. That one fought me off with a stick."

As someone who's actually a classical vocalist in training I 100% agree with how ridiculous this field of work really is. I'm already on degree #2, ass-deep in debt, and because I haven't hit my vocal peak yet (it happens right around your early 30s) I have to spend the next 7+ years somehow feeding myself while not wrecking my voice in the meantime. I'm going to be in debt for literally 30+ years after school. Please support the arts.

vitamindubya I mean a lot of patrons of the arts tend to be older but they aren't the only ones who enjoy it. I know a lot of younger people who do, both performers and not. It kind of sucks though because there are so many stereotypes that go along with classical music that discourage new people from getting into it, which is something the field as a whole is working on disproving.

Mozart's musical joke, if I remember correctly, was more than just making musicians look incompetent - he also poked fun at incompetent composers by cramming every bad stylistic device he could think of in there and overusing all of it to a hilarious extent. I'm pretty sure the sole purpose of that piece is to make everybody involved cringe as much as possible.
There's also an old anecdote about Mozart having to write an aria for a soprano he didn't get along with - she also had the habit of raising her head when singing high notes and lowering it when singing deep notes. Mozart, being Mozart, filled the thing with pitch jumps wherever possible, and was unreasonably amused by her bobbing her head like a chicken.

I can't imagine how some people think classical music is boring. To me, it's the most intense music out there. I think classical music demands a higher attention span, and an ability to retain musical ideas for longer periods of time. What I mean by that is: if pop music is like 3+4+5, it wouldn't require a long attention span to remember all the numbers so you can come up with =12. But with classical music, the musical ideas run longer and demand your full attention to "understand" the music, so it's more like 3+5+8+12+2+5+2+8+3+5+3+5=56. In classical, you need to absorb the music as a whole rather than just some fragmented parts here and there, where as in popular music, you really don't. Really though, listen to Bach's violin sonata no 1 and tell me you don't want to cry. I can't imagine how anyone isn't inspired by music like that...

I agree that classical music is very intense, but not every piece is as complex as you say it is. I think most of the reason people don't get into classical is because it "seems" difficult and because of its perceived elitist culture. But if people just gave it a try they would see it's different than how they think.

yeah oh right The same could be said about albums though. Rush - 2112 is 20 minutes long. Pink Floyd - The Wall is an hour. It's just now albums are separated into songs that can be enjoyed individually, or as a whole. I like a lot of classical music, but there's lots of good music today as well.
The Lonely Taco Of course there's good music today as well, I listen to a lot of modern stuff. But I think you're wrong to equate the attention you need to enjoy something like Pink Floyd's the wall with the attention you need to enjoy, say, Brahms violin concerto. I can play any random song off the wall and enjoy it as is, but I can't, as a new listener, skip straight to the 7th minute mark of Brahms violin concerto and fully enjoy the piece. The Rush song is a better example, because all the musical ideas you need to enjoy it are contained within the 20 minute song, and you need to understand it as a whole to like it. But, you'll find the same thing with Rush as you'll find in classical music: a lot of people don't like Rush because their attention span isn't long enough. If you think I'm trying to take modern music down a notch, you're wrong. I really like listening to stuff like tool, radiohead, bjork, queens of the stone age, death grips, etc. But I like them for different reasons then I like classical music. Both are great, but nothing gives me goosebumps like classical.

Let's be honest, everything by Tchaikovsky is awesome. While 1812 is amazing, I would contend his 6th symphony was his greatest work. Of course there's always Swan Lake, but it feels to obvious to advocate that.

I think of Tchaikovsky's *Fourth* Symphony as the Coronary Symphony (you know, like Haydn's Surprise only more so). The third movement is this delicate pizzicato (plucked string) piece, then the fourth starts with an almighty crash from the whole orchestra including percussion and brass. I went to a performance many years ago with a highly-strung friend who was at the time going out with the principal double bass player of the orchestra. We sat up the front, and when the crash came, she squeaked and jumped, and he smiled evilly at her.

So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.

You forgot my favorite Mozart story. He went to see allegri's misere when he was young, the Vatican had exclusive rights to the piece and it was only played in 2 churches ever. Mozart went, wrote down the whole score went back for a second listening just to check then sold it to everyone .... technically making him the first music pirate (move over napster!). When the pope found out he summoned him to the Vatican, not to punish him but to congratulate him on his cleverness ...

I mean, if i'm honest, classical music can be (mostly as a listener) boring. I often find playing a lot more exciting (I play violin and piano), and since performing is stress city it gets hard to be bored. Plus I like to think that what I have spent countless hours practicing isn't boring. But as a listener, to some extent, it gets _REALLY_ boring. There are some pieces I absolutely adore, but there are also some that just don't manage to keep my attention. Like, hour long symphonies are cool and all, and props to the musicians (lord knows I appreciate the effort and stamina and practice needed for that kind of thing) but it's boring to listen to for me, sorry.

About Van Halen's green M&Ms, it was a clause included in the contract to assure themselves the organizer actually read it. The contract was several pages on sound and light accomodation requirements and the organizer would not always meet them because they didn't read the specifics of the contract. So by randomly throwing in the green M&M demand in the contract Van Halen knew when arriving at the venue whether or not the organizer read the contract.

Important Note about Stravinsky and the famous riot of the Rite of Spring(Ballet) :
The opening of the song was indeed controversial when it was heard in the first place, but the riot really started when the dancers came to the stage and started doing Barbaric moves along with the piece. That was created the biggest scandal as people were forced to get out of theater by police.
So not only the piece, but the ballet was extremely scandalous.

I did not know that about Prokofiev. But have studied a biography of Shostakovitch and he means so much to me... I felt like I would have laid down my life so that he could live. It was said "which was his favor Mahler... and he replied "well there is the first, then well the second and then the third and so on through Mahler's entire repertory... LOL

Actually the green m&ms thing is actually a safety measure. They wanted to be sure that the people setting up the stage actually read all their contract. It's actually a really smart idea. If they didn't read it, they would just give him a bunch of m&ms that he asked for, but if they weren't all green, he wouldn't play because they clearly DIDNT READ THE SAFTEY MEASURES. I mean they were unloaded, and weird percussion is actually pretty common in orchestra pieces too. Mahler's 6th Symphony literally has a part written for a GIANT hammer hitting a table. Like, a hammer the size of the one from SSB randomly hitting a giant block in the middle of an orchestral symphony. It's real I promise, look it up.

sounds pretty depressing to work extremely hard your whole life to have a small chance to compete to maybe win a position doing grueling exhausting music that an extremely small fraction of people even find tolerable or even pay attention to, let alone pay to watch.
I hope the musicians are compensated very well for their massive investment because this industry doesn't sound very profitable.
Generally we're not well compensated (in the United States at least) unless you make it to a major opera house or a major orchestra but we keep going because we genuinely like what we do. There are slightly more people than you'd anticipate that actually do like classical music but unfortunately there's not enough support for the arts to really make sure this is a stable job for anyone involved. Also this is the kindest comment I've seen in here so thank you for being so understanding.

I'm studying music as my minor (I play viola), so I know a few people who are looking to do this professionally as well as some who are already pros. Most musicians in an orchestra are teaching as well, at local schools or universities. It seems insane when you think about it. One bassist in town is in the orchestra, plays for the musical theater, teaches private lessons, and teaches orchestra at a high school where there are at least 200 kids playing string instruments alone. But he loves it, and everyone I know who's doing this loves it. That's what keeps them going.
xenoblad it's definitely a pyramid... If you are at the top, you are doing VERY well. If you're not, it's a livable income, but is usually irregular per-service work. If you have a salaried position, it gives you greater freedom to teach, tour and self promote vs struggling to find the next gig.

As a professional guitarist, I get this. Because Van Halen put The Green candy thing into their contract with the event centers to make sure they would pay attention to the little details, the ones that prevent you from being electrocuted by the 30,000 volts of electricity used to power the dozens of amplifiers being used at the same time, or making sure the stage, which has to hold a full drum set, many many amps, the band, and any number cables, computers, and live soundboards. It's a dangerous job. It takes finess, skill and more practice than a nfl football player. Music is hard, but it's fun. And saying your a pro guitarist for a living is a billion times better than saying you work in a tiny little cubicle.

I like opera. Who thinks opera is boring? I mean besides boring people. Okay, maybe that's a little harsh but I cannot stand this new wave of anti intellectual, stupidity celebrating, pseudo people. I don't think most people are like that but many are. To them I say, life is full of art, beauty, amazing science, sex, history and it's the human experience. Try it.
Honestly as someone studying opera, it's nice for people to finally see how badass we really are. I haven't spent five years forcing my vocal muscles to do nearly impossible feats and eating nothing but apples eggs and lukewarm water for people to think I'm 'boring'
