There was actually a nutty theory to explain it on DestinyLore ages ago. I can't find it, but it made a bit of sense the more I read through it.
I don't believe it, but it existed.

No one’s been reset as much as he was and he seems to know cayde very well despite having the worst memory possible.

The Ishtar collective scientists didn’t make copies of themselves, the copies were a byproduct of escaping the simulation, all the other simulated scientists were data ppl thingy
I remember back when most exo would have a dream that they were fighting at the deep stone crypt and that the people fighting them were their own friends. What if these weren’t “their” dreams but the vex they fought remembering their perspective. And what if the individual vex minds were used to create or meld with the human mind in an exo.
Do you think we will get the "other end" of the stranger's radio call from d1?

its a scannable that kind of looks like a small white pillar just a bit taller than your gaurdian, its pretty out in the open. it should be along one of the entrance routes into the tangle on nessus

Myelin I can help you with your theory. Have a listen from Cayde's journal, Treasure Island, it reads "Saturn. No, someplace else. Someplace colder. This moon has been almost completely converted, a sarcophagus of ice and iron. Stone towers rung around with glaciers, rooted deep within a heart of snow. I came here flesh and bone. Gave everything to the ice. Started over. Rebooted."
This is genuinely fascinating. The Exo are one of Destiny’s greatest mysteries and this is a rare opportunity for real development. Your theories are terrific and make sense. VEXO baby.
Hey myelin here's something Exo-related I found going through my old quests recently. While grabbing dead ghosts on the moon, I got to the Circle of Bones one. Now, it's lore piece is titled "Eriana-3s ghost" but it clearly isn't. It talks about hoping to find itself a guardian to resurrect on the moon, mentioning among other possible candidates "An exo who never came home from the war". Now, I dont think Vex were ever present on the moon before the Garden gate appeared right? And the Hive were only discovered on the moon when Crota arrived, and the Great Disaster happened. A ghost wouldn't be looking for a dead guardian to claim, cause that's not something ghosts do. Which lead me to believe it must've been some war on the moon Clovis Bray waged with its army. Do you think it was the Vex back then? The collapse? Cause I got no idea and can't remember any other instances of a war on the moon in the lore.
Love how all the Lore links together from Long ago. Other fragments that may be linked in some way or at least vaguely connected.

•Osiris & Exo Stranger know each other in some capacity. Ever since Osiris says “little light” to us in Curse of Osiris I have always thought, from a story point of view, that this indicates ExoStranger & Osiris crossed paths in the past, especially since Osiris is obsessed with the Vex & they both time travel- it’s highly likely

Btw there’s a vanilla game scannable on Nessus i don’t remember exactly where but I’m pretty sure it’s in the place you start on for insight terminus strike, anywho scan it as an exo character and you get the question
This is a reminder Bungie plans (too far) ahead, there are unique scannables that hint at future content
There's actually a few such details on Nessus, one of them Ghost openly wonders if Cayde tinkered with it, but his success rate thus far indicates no.
One of the vanilla scannables hints at the infinite forest, as well.
Dex Iceheart yes, two of them, and there are two that hinted at the warmind expansion as well iirc but I always wondered when they were gonna go into the depth of exos with that hint

Awesome stuff. I never played D1 and I love it when you use its lore to reach conclusions and make sense of the lore we get nowadays.
This kinda explains why the ornament from vault of glass was a vex leg, and how the guardian could use it (mine was an exo lol)
the crypt exists on Europa and withing the vex network, like a breach allowing a foothold in their territory. that was one of my fabourite titan marks. the vex/exo hooked up together is the creation of exostranger. great video!

Perfectly reasonable and it makes sense. The Stranger said "I was born in darkness' and the facility was built in the shadow of a Pyramid ship, so it has always been there, like the moon. Maybe that points to a time travel ability for the Darkness or an outside influence for where to leave the ships
We just need someone to work up a meme real quick of Jim Halpert on the whiteboard adding an O to make it Vexo and then removing the V.

There are a handful of ghost scannables that further hint at a link between the Vex and Exos. The most notable one is the Conflux in the Tangle on Nessus that gives you different dialogue if your character is an Exo, but there are also a bunch of scannables on Io, namely in Terrabase Charon, that hint at that as well as Savathun and even a possible link between the Vex and the Cabal. I highly recommend you go explore every nook and cranny of that area for yourself before Io gets vaulted.
One out of context question: what in the world happened to the other subwarminds? I know Rasputing assimilated them all in to him but we barely hear anything from them
They were destroyed in the collapse, weren't they? The only reason Rasputin (earth submind) survived is because it was cut off from Rasputin Proper (Mars) and hid from the conflict.
I believe the Mars DLC retconned the other minds into being fragments of Rasputin only and never separate warminds.
There’s also a Red War campaign quote from Ikora saying, “There is only one warmind.”
When Rasputin used to be called “The Tyrant it was because he spanned the solar system so I think it was always the plan for their to be one Warmind across the solar system.
They retconned it in D2 and Warmind, so Hephaestus and such warminds no longer exist.

Going back on io there was a mode that exos can time travel. Which gives us a big hit how the exo stranger went through time. Preparing us for the vex and veil army. Like the hive and taken from the taken king.
I think what probably happens is: Exos were created by using a Vex to simulate a perfect copy of the "Host" IE: They copy your entire conscience and implant it into a robot frame. The reason why Exos need to have all their senses (Eating, drinking, pain) is because there is literally a person inside them, and they would go mad if they didnt have any attachment to their humanity. Thats why periodically they wiped Exos before they went crazy.
The "Long Slow Whisper" refered by Cayed probably means that somewhere in the DSC, an original copy of the mind was stored.
The "Existential Threat" alluded in the lore card is probably referrening to the fact that...yeah, you can be copied. Not like, an evil clone, but an exact copy of yourself that would raise the question of who was the "Real" one.
It's about time we got an Exo origin story.
Unrelated, but I hope to see a lot more of Mithrax next month. And some verbal confirmation that Exo Stranger is Elsie Bray would be the best. Would love to see her interact with Ana in some capacity. Especially if the raid sends us to put Rasputin in an Exo body.
Id suspected at least with Elsie/Stranger. But yeah the Vex and the Exos, there's def symmetry there. Great video Myelin.

there's a good 1 year gap betweet each expansion, and if Lightfall is about the battle between traveler and pyramid ship, maybe they will give us the story about why the traveler chose humanity, even though it can leave us just like the fallen?
There is a ghost node on IO, a vex antenna off the beaten path, that makes a comment that the vex signal is reacting to your exo body. You only hear this line if, of course, you check it as an exo character. So I've suspected this for a while because of this

I am not a big one at remembering all the lore, but could Rasputin possibly be Clovis Bray himself or his first attempt at trying to live forever
As far as we know, Rasputin is just a highly advanced AI created by Clovis Bray. Not a human mind implanted in a machine.

Keep up the Lore Myelin 💪🔥🔥, its so sick to know these back stories and then see them play out in the game. I've been watching you since D1 and your lore vids really hit on point with curiosity and speculation of what is and what's to come in Destiny. This franchise has such a rich story of many stories,that I hope a live action movie is made one day or maybe even a sick series animated or real life on Netflix/HBO etc would be so cool.

No it makes sense. Bray gets a vex core, already has a) warminds and b) exos. They try to reverse engineer vex skills to their own robotic shell and the vex come knocking to get their stuff back. Also I agree with daddy Bray finding a way to exo himself but without the ability to wipe him. Cool stuff
Maybe even the Exo stranger squad's was specifically designed to infiltrate the vex networks with the vex core technology? hence her easy time travelling shenanigan's
Also Ana downloads rasputin and takes him before mars gets destroyed , could rasputin be Clovis bray aka Anas father . Which is why she has such a emotional connection with rasputin ?
The title got my imagination going. So, Covis was in the midst of making what almost was the T-800 series Terminators with alien technology...This is so fucking cool.

Since we've already dealt with time paradoxes... Wouldn't it be AMAZING, If during "Beyond Light" Elsie thanks us for our assistance after we complete the raid. THEN (the payoff) during the Witch Queen expansion, there is a time where we are getting overrun, and our ghost makes a call to Elsie. The same call she receives when she was talking to us in the past!
I don't know if this changes anything, but we know that Exo tech wasn't exclusively controlled by Braytech. The Black Armory managed to get their hands on some Exo tech to build Ada-1. And they were definitely not affiliated with Braytech. Maybe they stole it?
it matches with the idea that the Exo stranger companion is made with Vex technology (we already know it's not a ghost). Vex technology is the best candidate to explain her capacity for time travel (or between alternate realities)

At first I didn't care about exo lore or the stranger but it steadily gets more interesting as it connects to the Vex, time travel and potentially the darkness
what you say does make sense and i mostly had that theory assembled myself since the stranger is one of the characters i study in more detail than others in destiny. there is just one thing that doesn't really make sense for me. why would Elsie Bray, one of the leading engineers of clovis bray and from what i belive one of the people responsible for creating the exos in the fist place be sent into battle like she is jsut another soldier? i'm not denying the possibility that she has vex tech in her (which at least wordline zero has) but i don't think she would just go into battle to be thrown away like that. especially in a situation where all the others died. she could have been involved with the vex battle but i don't think she would haev been part of the battle described in the lore text(s). from how i understand her character she would be a specialist workign alone or commanding a small team. that team might well be the "exo squadron" the she is the last one of. but i think a person with as much significance as Elsie Bray would not just grab a rifle and charge into battle. she would have somethign different in mind. she's a top engineer after all. not a soldier

to add a little context: i don't think that the vex tech in exos enables them to time travel. similar to how Worldine Zero is kind of related to time travel and doesn't require our guardian to be an exo (though mine is). i totally do belive that Vex tech is used in exos though. and i even have an explanation why. see Elsie Bray obviously remembers her past life. how? she would have gone mad from DER right? i don't think so because what Vex bodies are is literally just Exos made for radiolaria life forms like the vex. i think Clovis bray analyzed the Vex bodies to improve on the Exo designs to make them more efficient at interfacing with a human mind. a side effect of that would be the "cure" for DER. which is probably why Elsie can remember everything. of course Clovis Bray never acnowledged this because they wanted to keep their scapegoat for mind-wiping exos whenever they want to hisde their shady practices.
we also forget that Elsie mentioned that becoming an Exo aswell as Ana Bray saved her life. that doesn't sound like she was an Exo long before the Collapse. the lore doesn't specifically state what happened but i think it went something like this:
- Elsie sees the Future and the imminent Collapse when she makes Worldine Zero.
- After hiding the weapon in the sleeper nodes she contacts Ana who unlike Willa Bray she trusts
- Ana helps her hide from Willa and Elsie, knowing that the Collapse will very likely kill her decided to become and Exo to get a better chance at survival.
- Sicne Ana is very close to her she agrees and helps her
- now an Exo (and probably with some extras installed since as stated above i believe she was involved in the exo's creation, this is maybe how she can remember everything. that or she figured out a way to rebuild the lost memories of Exos. or my earlier explanation applies and it was never a problem) she manages to get off mars
- during the collapse she is in hiding and perfects the technology behind worldine zero enabeling her to time travel
- The Exo Stranger is born
while my way of understanding the story is not confirmed it is unlikely that Elsie was an Exo before the collapse. if she was, Ana would very likely know that. and hearing the reports of the Stranger she would have known it is Elsie. but Ana doesn't so there can't be any mentioning of her being an Exo in the Clovis Bray database so it had to be at the time when the Collapse happened so there was no way that it found its way into any kind of data archive.

Zoras Tech you gotta remember he had a different mentality back then. That was his pre Felwinter time where he decided sacrificing humanity for himself was what he wanted to do
They hinted at this at the beginning of the game on Nessus, if you're an Exo, there's a Vex construct where if you scan it with your ghost the ghost says something along the lines that Vex have a connection with the Exos.
The area is close to the beginning of that one Psion strike

I caught harpy’s from unprotected vex. It’s not a joke, and I can only pray others will choose wiser.
My son is doing the infinite forest and he noticed that none of the harpys would attack him, not one, so I asked him what type of character he was, he said exo...so I'm left wondering if certain character classes really have inherent traits.

Imagine if the Vex evolved from the Exos. What if they went back in time to understand how/why they came to be. What if they then went back further in time to understand why/how the Exos came to be. Then why/how humans and awoken came to be. Then even further to understand why/how the universe exists. Working backwards in the timeline from the future and simultaneously existing in our past, present and future. Their simulations are our reality, we just haven't turned that potential page yet. 🤔
I feel like the "whispers" and "nightmares" the exo's get are the DSC calling them back to join the collective.

I think you're right as far as Elsie goes, as well as the potentiality that Clovis Brae has control over multiple worlds. I think they may have abandonned Sol when it became clear the Collapse was absolute.

One thing that I am curious about is that it doesn't seem that Else/Stranger doesn't need to do the mind wipe thing and neither did the Black Armory vendor. I imagine this probably was explained already somewhere but it seems like it wasn't actually necessary to reset people's minds and was something Clovis Brey did on purpose for their own ends.
It is also possible Clovis started to develop Exo technically to save Elsy, not himself. That they eventually switched to development for them as weapons to justify the cost. I base this off of the lore where most Exo dream of bodies and endless war, but a few dream of lonely peace. I think this shows a change in the core purpose of the Exo. The first or oldest see peace and the newer are made on mass for war.

Clovis Brey been using Vex technology and knew about the Vex for a very long time before the Collapse.

Found a lost sector in which my ghost commented on bray experiments with very tech and what vex fluid does to people

Also, knowing that you uploaded this a month ago, you should be aware that Europa created a certain faction of EXO, but not all of them were created there. Ada was made by the black armory. Felwinter was made by rescue. We didn’t know until the collectors journal came out that Ishtar had their own version of the EXO’s.

I think it would be very cool (and not totally unreasonable) if the next major expansion location would be Venus. I mean it’s a fan favorite, a lot of lore surrounds it, and we haven’t seen or heard from it in so long. Then again, the witch-queen could just have a second Dreadnaught but who knows
Awesome vid. This actually confirms a theory that I’ve been having and who the big baddies are going to be. Better yet if it goes the way I reckon, Clovis played God and took a book from Full Metal Alchemist (see Chimera episode). I understand his motive but everything comes with a price. The next season is going to pull on the heart strings of players.
In d1 my main was an exo warlock, he always thought there was something about the vex, then in d2 I had other thoughts and my hunter became my main, but still the vex always concerned me and had me wondering about exos
Hey, quick theory, seeing as how we’re going into the Deep Stone Crypt, which is Clovis Bray and people are talking a bit more about SIVA, which is also made by Clovis Bray, what if we find a prototype Exo made from SIVA? Perhaps that will be a mini boss for the raid?

So if Clovis Bray was trying to live forever... and managed to transfer his conscience into a machine... he’ll either be the next raid boss, or he is Rasputin. Certainly Rasputin has been finding ways to keep on no matter the cost...

A somewhat different theory on the link between the Exo and Vex.
It could be a little confusing, but I'm starting to think that an Exo's consciousness comes from a person from other timelines conquered by the Vex. Since it's confirmed that through the Vex network alternate realities and timelines exist. It could mean that when they conquer a reality they analyze and replicate the consciousnesses of the people they destroy and use that "data" to help their simulations. Then Clovis Bray simply extracted that data and placed it into an Exo frame.
Myelin, is there a possible connection between Bray and the Darkness ships? I know it's a stretch, but I noticed that the Bray statue on Africa, and the shape of the building that holds the Warmind, it two tetrahedrons stacked bottom to bottom. Maybe I'm reaching, but the architecture looks very similar.

I would like to suggest looking into the nessus adventures with failsafe in regards to the subject. There seems to be some stuff on mind transplants.
The brainwaves thing? The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If the vex have a way to, as failsafe puts it “digitize brain waves,” that would be a plausible answer to the creation of the exo

But the fact that quote said “if I had a vex core... I can push it to its full capabilities” makes me want to believe this theory works

The Vex back story is definitely some of the most intriguing Bungie has crafted. I'm really excited to see what turns up in Beyond Light.
