+Randy Piplica Lucky bugger. I saw them perform this at one of their London shows in the 70's it was great then and it is great now. Thank you Grateful Dead and Deads heads everywhere. X
I saw this video and thought I was there than i saw myself behind the girl on the shoulders and WOW - weird looking back in time at yourself - Was a great Time in SF. Miss those days
Not quite the same thing but I watched the Grateful Dead movie the first time I dropped acid on college ave in Boston 1995. I had just moved from the Philippines and it was the first time I ever heard the Dead and it was sublime. I started taking guitar lessons shortly thereafter. 25 years later I have a daughter named Rosalie who loves to sing Rosalie McFall while daddy plays guitar.
Amazing times the 70s. I was 9 at this show. Love crowds B4 IPHONE TAPERS. I true shared experience between band and audience Technologie is often a buffer but GRateFUL for UA-cam and everyone sharing " these dear oldmemories PROPS!!!!!!!!!!! M
WOW!!!!! THIS SURE BROUGHT A SMILE TO MY FACE, AND A TEAR IN MY EYE! I'M TRYING TO FIND THE WORDS TO DISCRIBE THE FEELING FROM BACK THEN BUT I CAN'T!!!!! IT LIVES IN MY MIND AND SOUL!!!! PEACE & GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss Jerry -- all this -- sooooo much. We will never see his like again. So glad they recorded so much for us to time-trip with. Seeing the movie this is taken from in the movie thee-ayters was what introduced me to the Dead. And thank-u friscobay for posting this.
I grew up listening to the Dead not a day goes by that I don't. When I lived in Portland I ate some shrooms one day and ended up at the library I checked out this video and took it home and watched it on a big TV it was amazing I laughed and cried for hours it was great.
At 21 i just went to my 2nd or 3rd Dead tribute band.....the feeling i had at those concerts are truly unmatched and i would give up 51 years of my life to live one concert back in the 70s....enjoy the memories!
Nice collection. Going to fall asleep listening to Jerry and the boys. I wish I could be in Chicago this July, but it ain't gonna happen. Keep on Truckin' boys.
It's hard NOT to smile everytime I see this video.......the cartoon is amazing, of course and then seeing the crowd/band interaction.....the guy singing while standing right in front of the stage.........right on!
this is offically the best dead song ever.i gotta get a copy of the soundtrack to this movie.and for those of you who were wondering earlier.this was recorded and taped in 1974 and released in 1977
Portland Oregon ,Early 80s My bro and I were supposed to go to the MALL .We never made it Two really cool people gave us there tickets (FOR FREE) she got sick,Missed the first 4 songs ,Still had a blast
@@lizzyfan1986 Are you serious btw? My friends and I have called him "Chickenshack" for many years now and it is an important part of our lexicon. If true, thank him for us.
@spacemeddle I'm 49 and was always told to fear hippies then I listened to The Dead at 24 and just loved the music even AFTER punk The hippies were fun to watch, I LOVED the improv jeez i'm old! but love love love the Grateful Dead best now. Why? Hmmmm.
I used to work security for Bill Graham Presents from 1987 to 1993. I worked soooooo many Grateful dead shows, lost track. I worked 5 new years shows in a row. I could have worked other shows those nights at other venues but I chose the DEAD hands down. The crowd was always into having fun and dancing. Other shows would have been nothing but trouble the whole time. I worked New years shows from '87-'91. The DEAD stopped new years shows when Bill Graham was killed in a hellicopter crash.
this is from The Grateful Dead movie. Love it!!! I doubt many of the fans are now Tea Party members. maybe centrist democrats and maybe a few republicans but i am certain there are very few tea partiers. there are hopefully a lot of partiers though.
@xrInstrumentals Thanks for the info man! That guy looks like he could be John's long lost brother. The mid 70's were some wild times for Lennon - following the Dead seemed plausible during this period.
The "Steal Your Face" concerts. 5 nights at the now-demolished Winterland Auditorium, Oct. 16-20, 1974 (Wed.-Sun.), after which they went on a brief hiatus. I was a UCB student living in student coops and I went on the Fri. night (10/18/74), the night before this video. A friend at the same student coop went on the last night (Sun.) and took too big a dose of a certain LSD with which I was familiar, on the market then, even though I warned him not to take so much. He had a rough night.
@pretaliation, I am a DeadHead. I have been to 10 + shows, not impressive by some standards but, I'VE SEEN THEM LIVE. I Love the Grateful Dead ! I also love Iron Maiden, Metallica,Black Sabbath, Ect. I am not a "Heavy Metal Moron" I love GOOD Music in Any form.
@TheIzzymuse Nice one I am 53 and I still wince when I recall fashions and trends from my youth, but fuckit young people are entitled to hold different opinions just as us oldies are entitled to talk bullshit. Peace and best wishes to you and yours.
@DSKnapierdala Thats great news man, I'm really happy for you. Its comments like this that inspire me to do more so thanks for that. Although learning this may take a little while, once you get it down, the next one will be that much easier. Keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions at all.
@Bluesman63 Could be but I doubt it. You gotta remember 1974 was right after Beatlemania, if Lennon was in the room the audience would have half forgotten about the Dead and swarmed around Lennon. Also he would have had bodyguards out the wazoo. Plus I could be wrong but I don't think he was much into the Dead... and it would have been widely reported regarding that show, and would have been mentioned in the movie. I think they zoomed in because it was a look-alike.
Biglebowskir, there is always something you can do about it, you, Daphnener, and all the others who dream the dreams. As another California '60s band (Steppenwolf) sang all those years ago, "It's Never Too Late"! You've even got a president who dreams your dreams! WE had Nixon and Ford... I believe you can do it. Me, I'm too old now.
Shake the hand That shook the hand Of P.T. Barnum And Charlie Chan!!!! ^^^^ Such an unexpectedly cool lyric. Jerry sounds like a happy Buddha when he sings "Charlie Chan!"
I was at this show for my Birthday.

I heard Chicken Shack Guy is at Evergreen college in Washington state teaching a course--"How to Have Fun at a Concert" 101.

It is really wonderful watching young Jerry and the Band
I miss Jerry -- all this -- sooooo much. We will never see his like again.

The happiest audience ever!
Such joy! The band and the audience digging and enjoying the vibe. Get your freak on and be cool with each other. If only the Dead ran the world.....
Amen!
Love The Dead.
I love Deadheads even More!
I don't care how rotten my day was... watching this just makes everything ok... and puts a grin on my ears.

Still gives me chills. Wave that flag! Wave it wide and High. Love the guy at 2:33.
GREAT CROWD! Don't want it to stop.
It's hard NOT to smile everytime I see this video.......the cartoon is amazing, of course and then seeing the crowd/band interaction.....the guy singing while standing right in front of the stage.........right on!
this is taken from the Grateful Dead Movie, the animation you see is the end of a introductory bit by an artist named Gary Gutierrez
GAWD ! We're all 40 years older now... shit! how... when did that happen? I'm 17, trapped in a old guy's body... dammit.
Man,how can you not want to sing along with this!!!!

HAPPY FOURTH!!! God Bless You Mr. Garcia!!! MISS YOU
i think 74 is one of the best years for the dead because jerry is healthy so his singing is great.
hearing this and seeing the people just puts the biggest smile on my face ever. I guess it's time i rose out of my seat and moved my feet :-D
Happy Birthday, Capt'n.
i love this guy at 2:30 :D and 3:00 !
That guy at 2:30 is a super dork rocking out on a crappy song!

@@lizzyfan1986 Are you serious btw? My friends and I have called him "Chickenshack" for many years now and it is an important part of our lexicon. If true, thank him for us.

This could be the greatest footage ever - of the BEST American band ever.
Could use The Dead these days.
Crao you know your are getting old when ya see yourself in the crowd - Winterland was a magical place.
This song just seems to become more and more increasingly relevant...
GAWD! I still have this around here (somewhere) on VHS...
I really enjoy the groovy, jazzy year of '74 for the Dead. That and Phil's beard!
this is from The Grateful Dead movie. Love it!!!

They had the wall of sound from 5/12/74 up until these shows that were in Oct. of 74. (as per Dead base)
How can you sit down and listen to this?
Everyone is having a grand old time. Sigh
I managed to miss these shows. I was in the Coast Guard... :(... but we did get 1st dibs on all the good stuff... even if it was a bit damp.
