- In this video I'm sharing some very simple and easy steps for updating a vintage wool coat. They're little changes that anyone can do (no sewing expertise required) and they make a big difference! I hope you enjoy. Oh, and I apologize for the very click-baity thumbnail, but y'know... a girl's gotta get those views!
Everyday sewing supplies like seam rippers, fabric scissors etc. can easily be found at your local fabric store or online.
The buttons I used were from an Etsy store called Duncan and Birch - www.etsy.com/c...

I love the color and the coat. I liked the gold buttons
This video came at the best time! I bought a vintage cost yesterday and wanted to change the buttons and remove the shoulder pads. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
I have this exact cost both were my moms and I love how warm they are. Thank you for the tips. Much appreciated❤
That is such a beautiful coat! It reminds me of old Balenciaga
Isn't it lovely!
Like it , I love all my wool clothing , all from thrift or as we in the UK call the charity shops .
This was great timing because I also had a coat with shoulder pads that I needed to remove! I just did it like you showed and it was a really easy 😊 thanks for the inspiration
I'm so glad you found it helpful! :)
What a beautiful coat, Emily; it's hard to believe it cost only $30.
"A little bit TOO nostalgic. "
Chuckled hard at that polite turn of phrase :)
Buttons are such an easy way to restyle a coat or jacket.
I like to use Wooden or dark brown bakelite-like buttons to upcycle military Wool greatcoats and Jackets (think peacoats). They usually come with plastic golden buttons with motifs like anchors, rifles or birds. The plain buttons give it a more utilitarian look that has a timeless feel to it.
Having said that my first upcycle was a vintage Olive Drab Australian Army Greatcoat with hideous gold plastic buttons in my size. I replaced them all with 25mm (1 inch) Light-wood buttons that had coconut trees laser etched/burnt into them. I even kept the corporal Chevrons on the soldier and made them wings for some Baby Milo patches i added .
Its a bit of steampunk anime-ish garment that people often respond to it positively.
I affectionately refer to the garment as the Greatcoat once worn by "Sargento Coco Mico of the Flying Monkey's Division".
Probably would do an antagonist counterpart to it in Grey wool with Cog shaped buttons if I found the coat. All my other coats are styled in the usual conservative way.
Yes, buttons can totally change a jacket! Your style sounds awesome :)
Love your channel! Such good information. Now I want to sew! So, just bought a sewing machine!
Wonderful! Happy sewing!
Which thrift store did you find yours at? I'm in Canada too and am hunting for a new maxi, hooded, winter coat :) I'm even considering making my own but I'm not a seamstress and it might turn out looking crazy haha
What a great coat! It is such a gorgeous color, and your modifications really updated the look. I am so looking forward to going thrift shopping again one day!
Yes, I miss the thrift store so much! Hopefully soon xx
Pro trick : watch series on kaldroStream. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Drake Marcellus Definitely, been watching on Kaldrostream for since december myself =)
I bought an overcoat which fit good but not for the shoulders pads. I'm tall so I thrifted a large coat but the shoulders pads are not exact. They drop down. I was wondering how can i fix that?? Thans you so much
Hi..I have a black wool coat (now too tight around the body) and a nice check wool coat that I want to cut some panels from and insert into the black coat so I can make it bigger and wear it again....any ideas on the makeover?
My tips would be to try on your jacket and see where you would like to make it larger, then draw it out so you have a plan that you can follow. Also cut the panels larger than you think you need as you can always make them smaller but you can’t make them bigger. Pin everything in place and try it on so you can see how it looks before sewing.
Aaaaaagh! Don't tell people this! I've been using vintage women's Wool coats from thrift stores as a fabrjc source for jackets of mine.
Nothing against you dear but I brought a smile to my face when you allowed Mum to get her coat back which meant that she only let you borrow it. It takes a coat to be very special before I adopt it into the fold but once it’s there and trust me (I’ll even have triplets of a particular style but differing in shade or manufacturer,) and a few coats I may not even wear this season but I am glad to know that they are in my arsonal and if were to become missing would bother me quite a bit
I just made a coat like that was really excited then I finished and I just don't like the style
Too bad! Some things just don't turn out :(
Its a lovely material but its still WAYYY TOO BIG! its like a 22x coat on a size 12 body!
