  • This is just a quick video to follow up on the Kiesel controversy.
I think he did a good job accepting that he handled the situation badly and is making the necessary actions to fix the problems.

I’d also like to mention that I edited the original video so it’s now a far more accurate representation of the events that unfolded. It’s still not an excuse for Jeffs actions but I can’t point out other peoples mistakes without taking ownership of my own. I should have checked the time stamps more closely.

What cracks me up about Jeff's videos is that he's constantly 'offering' tone recommendations regarding pickups, woods, chambering, hardware, various materials etc. He goes on and on claiming that the woods Kiesel uses are superior compared to others because other companies "don't pay their bills on time and that's why Kiesel always gets the first pick". He even says that basswood is a terrible tone wood and shouldn't be used in guitars. On top of that, Jeff thinks that everyone is copying their designs, finishes etc - all the while Kiesel definitely has S-style, T-style, PRS-style, Gibson-style, and even Suhr-ish, guitars in their catalogue.
All this, and he doesn't even play the guitar himself, at least I've never seen or heard any proof of this even though I enjoy watching their videos occasionally. To me his opinions about guitars aren't actually very credible, which is pretty ironic.
By the way, that's my cracked ebony fretboard (in the first video). It was an absolute nightmare and I was forced to make it public since they weren't willing to resolve the situation privately.

He only owns the company because his daddy gave it to him. He acts like he's this delicate genius with all these amazing original ideas, but all of what that company does is derivative of something else. Headless? Nope, Steinberger - and the Vader is a near direct headless ripoff of the Ibanez Voyager. Bevels? Nope, Knaggs, Gibson. CT? PRS ripoff. CS? Les Paul Ripoff. Delos? Fender Ripoff. Solo? Fender ripoff.

Kiesel clearly is more of an assembly line. They can build/assemble great looking guitars but as I've owned two Kiesels myself, I can honestly say that playability and fit&finish wise they are probably comparable to something like LTD and Ibanez guitars - definitely not comparable to Suhr, Anderson and Ruokangas which I nowadays play.
I do like their business idea of selling direct and offering a ton of options but I personally won't be ordering from them anymore. Too many better and more trustworthy builders out there!

I have had dealings with Jeff in the past. I purchased a CT624 when they first switch their name from Carvin. It had a smudge in the finish that looked like someone had touched it before the last coat went on. I sent it back and they told me it was just the grain in the wood and you will get that sometimes. So I asked them why the don't display the ones with imperfections on their web site, of course no answer. To make a long story short and after arguing for quite some time they finally agreed to build me a new one but I had to pay the restocking fee, then they sold the one I returned on the web site for the full price. One last thing, I have had multiple Carvins, and the only problem I ever had was when I ordered a 1987 DC125. It came with a broken head stock so I sent it back, they called me and asked if I was fine with block abalone inlays, which at the time was a 200 dollar upgrade and I said yes of course. That was customer service. It just goes to show you it is the people at the top that make the difference.

You're a fool if you believe this is the first time Jeff has turned over a new leaf. This is typical behavior for someone like himself. They will apologize, claim to make changes or even attempt to and then they inevitably can't control their childish anger and thoughts and berate all over again. The only way to win is to not play. In this case that means don't buy from Kiesel. Ever.

As a musician who has dealt with guitar companies both large and small as an artist, one thing that I've always found curious is that larger companies are always more willing to listen to customers than smaller companies are. In my experience, that is. I'm sure there are exceptions. I've had conversations with artist reps at many large guitar companies, whether I was one of their official artists or not. With the smaller ones, they tend to ignore calls.

One reason that I don't known if I'd ever actually get a Kiesel is because certain Option 50 things they simply will not do. If you want a gloss finish on the neck, too bad, they will NOT do that. Period. So if I ever do get one, I have to also consider the added price of taking it to another shop to have the neck refinished into what I actualliy wanted in the first place. And why is it that I can get a gloss neck on a Squier but not on a Kiesel??
Also an interesting note. I used to live fairly close to their showroom and would go there regularly. So I've heard multple orders being placed. And even though a quilted maple top is a $400 option, the sales guy would say "for an extra $100 I'll make sure they choose a really good piece for you." Seems kinda sketchy. Why doesn't the $400 option look good enough?

This is exactly the kind of objectivity needed more in life.
Also, Thank you for setting a good example and striving to stay consistent - a task not easily achieved - and like some have already commented here, 'when the ego is involved.' THIS is the self trap we all fall into way more than we want to admit, and need to be continually mindful so we can be better humans.
I'd like to see the apology. Since I'm not into 'faceplant' or any other social media except here on the Tube. if anyone finds an upload, could you please send a link? Would be appreciated.
I may take some time to reconsider ordering a guitar, since Lefties get very little respect, this was pretty much my last attempt to get exactly what I wanted at a price point I could almost deal with.
Thanks, and continue using critical analysis to keep it real.

I appreciate also the correctness you had in making this video. Talking of common sense, I've seen many people hating on Jeff Kiesel and his brand, and that is also very wrong. He's a jerk and full of himself and the customer is last to him. Seems nothing has changed from the 90's Carvin company. When my Carvin was done I got a call. They made it the wrong color. I was given 3 choices. Take the wrong color and be happy, have them make the correct color but I'd be put to the bottom of the waiting list or cancel and loose my deposit. WOW!!! How Low Down!! So. This kind of sucks but I have to be consistent with what I think are important values. I've bought and played Carvin and Kiesel guitars since the 80s. I grew up drooling over their catalogs that would come in the mail. I currently own both Carvin and Kiesel guitars and like the way they play. I've always liked their distinctive looks and the smaller nature of their business. Maybe I'm overreacting, but that video posted by Jeff was too much. That wasn't a single slip of the tongue. This life-long devoted customer (like myself) paid for a specific guitar and didn't get it. Plain and simple. He wasn't being unreasonable or demanding. He paid for one thing and got another. And when he appropriately expressed disappointment about this and asked for a fix, he was treated really poorly for no reason. And not just in private. Jeff attempted to make a public example of him to gin up support, which worked with some people. It didn't work with me. It was wrong and way over the top and revealed some true nature. I can't believe I'm saying this but I won't buy anything else from them and I will tell others this story instead of the ones I used to tell. The well has been poisoned.

This is a problem that started with the USA Congress. All people have to do to be vindicated is apologize. I don't think people who have made some kind of blunder in speech should be shackled with it for the rest of their lives. But I do think that their future actions should conform to what they do, and not with what they say. If Jeff Kiesel wants to be acknowledged as a reputable person, he needs to gain his buyers' trust by not only apologizing for anything he might have said (whether he was having a bad day or not), by his actions. When he gains the trust of his customers back by his actions, he should then be seen as a reputable businessman. I bought my first Carvin guitar some 20 years ago. I liked the Carvin guitars better. Furthermore, two things I don't like about Jeff Kiesel's "hard-shell" cases are (1) The rounded neck groove allows the tuning keys to touch where they lie. Carvin never did this, and (2) I've bought a number of Carvins and a number of Kiesels. If I were an employee and talked the same way to a customer as Jeff Kiesel did and got the same feedback, my job would be in jeopardy. If Jeff Kiesel knew my name, he wouldn't even know who I am or the number of Carvin/Kiesel guitars I've bought (numerous).

@@heavynov Too little too late. Especially when he's still gaslighting. IF that fretboard was roasted at all, which is a stretch, it was NOT done properly. If it wasn't noticed before, that had to have been painfully obvious when the fretboard and the neck were being matched up. Any competent luthier would have rejected the fretboard as not appropriate for this (custom ordered) guitar, and gotten another piece of wood. Any competent supervisor would have made sure that happened. Any competent owner would have immediately made good when the customer pointed out the mistake. Instead, it appears Jeff Kiesel himself probably built that neck, Jeff Kiesel himself looked at that mismatch and thought "oh well, I'm in a hurry today" and just glued the sucker right on. Whoever he has supervising and quality checking probably was too intimidated to tell the boss not to be an idiot, so it shipped. And then when the customer said "hey, this isn't what I ordered" he goes on a public rant to disrespect and humiliate his customer!
Absolutely unacceptable. A private apology no one sees does not begin to repair the damage he just did to his own business. He clearly thinks his customers are stupid, and that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. At this point, why would anyone ever buy from him again, other than out of stupidity? Yes, he makes some nice guitars, but lots of people make nice guitars, I think I'd rather spend my money with someone who isn't a raging dickhead with a history of abusing his customers.

Mine have been great until I bought this bass with antique ash finish and transparent black over it to make it look old/burnt. They gave it a solid black and you can't see the antique finish I paid for. It's totally not what I ordered, but was an option 50 because lefty multiscales are not returnable. Evidently that's the case even if they do something completely incorrectly.
I gave it a great review on their FB page with the exception of the finish and the strings that came on it. I called customer service about it and they basically said, "Sucks to be you." Jeff even went off about it on one of his fb livestreams. I was watching and could believe that mouthy little prick whined about it the way he did. I'm the one who paid over $2k for it. I think Jeff got a big piece of Humble Pie, and I'm glad to see him rectify the situation with his customer, and improve his process for future customers.
