    Dionne is so criminally overlooked and under appreciated as a vocalist. She’s a real master and her musicality is insane. Truly one of the best voices! An absolute legend

      How is she criminally overlooked and be a legend?🙄

    • @nicim3730
      @nicim3730 8 днів тому +1

      @@jmh721 she is because she sang pop...early in her career they didnt want to put a face with her records so that they could sell it. She didnt perform for black audiences and wasnt on R&B stations. Her music was also very difficult and complex and not for the common "black" audience the way Motown artists, Aretha, Gladys, and other black acts of the times were going in the 60s and 70s. Lastly, Dionne Warwick wasnt signed to a label early on, she was signed to Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Because of Bacharach and David being signed to the label Scepter, the label could do what they wanted to do with the songs Dionne sang and they would end up with other artists to simplify and water them down and turn them into #1 hits.

    • @nicim3730
      @nicim3730 8 днів тому +1

      In other words. Dionne's singing was over psople's heads, not the genre of black folks, and the pop audience had crowned Barbara Streisand and Karen Carpenter as their pop divas of the time. Unfortunately, it will take music historians and analysts to fully give Dionne Warwick her just due, probably when she is no longer with us sadly.

      I think Whitney Houston did the same thing because they told her to not sing so "black"
      I think eventually she told them off and that's why her life performances are off the hook.

      @@Mntman1031 Whitney's studio recordings are still very advanced tbh. Didn't We Almost Have It All, You're Still My Man, So Emotional, I'm Every Woman, I'm Your Baby Tonight, All The Man That I Need aren't holding back or "playing it safe" recordings at all.

    • @hdlc4635

      Many of her early studio recordings have very intricate compositions that are difficult to sing. Dionne had years as a demo and background singer while finishing her undergrad degree in music education before she started recording. It’s her craftsmanship that makes it sound like “she’s playing it safe,” when in fact she was performing high level vocal gymnastics on difficult routines

    • @singingmanmd
      @singingmanmd 9 днів тому +2

      No, all Ms. Dionne's recordings throughout the years were never safe nor easy. She just was that skilled to make them appear easy. Yes, she kept it somewhat mild on her recordings for marketing purposes. However, her mildness is so different and more difficult to sing compared to her peers recordings because her recordings required so much more vocal details and intricacies and musicality. She just made it sound and appear easy. She is just that great!!

    Her influences are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, and Diahann Carrol. These people literally worked with her. Showed her the ropes when she was a young artist. Actress/ singer Marlene Dietrich also mentored her in France helping to get her career and started in Europe and introduced her to high fashion.

    Ms. Iconic Dionne vocals are pure plantinum!! She is the Pioneer! Her voice transitions smoothly and with ease thru all vocal registers, riff, runs, soft, strong belts, impecaable phrasing, sustained long notes while weaving thru different pitches, subperb breath control, mic far from mouth yet her projection is evenly distributed. Her musicality and vocal ability are completely even, meaning all the vocal skills that she has none are compromised or one being better over the other. It is all equally great! Just pure class, elegance with an amazingly unique vocal style. She is the best of the best period❤.

    Dionne is unique too in being a trained musician, can play piano/organ and sight read music. Her early songs written for her had difficult changes in octaves and fluctuating measures throughout, but she had them seem easy. Only Aretha had more charted hits than Dionne, who also won Grammys in both pop and R&B. Luther Vandross counted her as his musical inspiration and covered many of her songs, did duets w/ her and had hit (Here and Now) written by one of her sons. Whitney clearly learned much from her older cousin. In the 80s she hosted a weekly musical show and could sing with anyone, including dozens of legends who came on the show to sing with her.
