"Violence is not strength and compassion is not weakness."
I still take this to heart 50 years after seeing it.
Such a great actor. Nobody, could have done this better.
In my opinion, Richard Burton did it best.
To me THIS will always be King Arthur, not a cool sword or tales of adventure define him, this does. Despite the pain and betrayal he resolved to be better and rise above and rule as a kind and CIVILIZED king, a king who preservers to always rule without cruelty and understand others.
You said it, though love and magic speak to me character is what the kings table is about!!
Perseveres. Yes.
'COMPASSION IS NOT WEAKNESS"
❤ right is right
What a fantastic performance of love, compassion and leadership. I am such a fan of Richard Harris, RIP!
I first saw this movie 47 years ago as a seventh grader. It touched me then and it still does today as a 60 year old. I guess I am a hopeless romantic.
Nope
Absolutely powerful. I am in tears.
I admired Richard Harris so much! I believe in dragons and magic! But he lives on through his work. Judy
So well written and exceptionally well acted....and a lifelong code that I have tried to live by since I first saw this movie in 1967...it has served me well....Thanks so much for this post!!!!
I watched this film as a child, and it awaked in me the love for Arthur and his Knights,I read every book I could find. on this , years later when I listened to the words with a better understanding ,I find it even more beautiful
He really captured King Author! The voice was so much like Arthur and he will be the king! Judy Sherry
Just superb. No actor can compare. Breathtaking, Richard. Where ever you are.
Wow over 51,000 views. I thought this was a movie that would fade with time. I believe I’m the only one in my 30’s to love this great movie. I thank everyone of you that stopped to watch this great speech. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I am 65...saw this when it first came out...Camelot...liberty...repupublic...loyalty...love...passion...compassion...betrayal...agony...forgiveness...mercy...timeless and human....and A great musical score
I’m 18 and this is my favorite film.
sarah Munday-Allee I’m not a jealous man. I’m really not. But I’m a little jealous you saw this on the big screen and not me. Hahaha
Great speech, great writing and delivered brilliantly by a truly great actor.

So many values and themes in this movie
When he says "a man's vengeance" my heart cracks !
Magnificent. One of the greatest films ever made in my opinion. Magical. ❤
So immotional , the utmost actor ,love Richard Harris . . .
At last I have found this!
Absolutely a classic when it was new
Fabulous Actor! Fabulous!
Muse! Thank you for sharing
I love the non-subtlety of Arthur overcoming the literal phallus next to him, casting a shadow across his face.
I was looking for this because this is Linkara's favorite movie. Also he quotes it sometimes.
Amy Villanueva Me too.

I did this soliloquy in high school drama class.
Un musical precioso. Con una música que no olvidó.
This is Christian Theology, and it's really Beautiful.
Paul List, so true. Amazing grace and the joy he finds in it.
It’s why we have trial by jury not trial by combat
This is almost Shakespearian
This is how it should be performed anyway.....
King Author is the foil of Henry VIII. Author was, even if only fictional, a real MAN, while Henry VIII, though demonstrably a real historical man, was a spoiled tyrant, monster child. Follow Henry VIII at your own peril, friends.....
King Author?
Impish and playful. Regal and a great purveyor of idealism and fellowship. Harris is King Arthur for me. The voice, the smile, the delivery of words. He will always be my favorite in my favorite film. I use to drag anyone I could to see the film.❤
Best Love Scene EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
If only we had a leader like King Arthur now in our WH. Saw this movie when it first came out and never have forgotten the beauty of it.
Lol sound byte when the doors open... I remember it clearly in the opening cinematic from the game Daggerfall.
We could This speech right now thank you
I can make out his hint of an Irish accent.
Marcus Aurelius
Do you suppose the sword handle is that shape on purpose? Check it out in the close-up at 2:35.
I demand a mans vengeance
I honestly believe that Richard Harris does a better job of this soliloquy.

Geez, King Solo....you couldn't let this critical scene and its music play to the conclusion -- music builds to a magnificent climax as the first half of the movie ends and the intermission card displays? How could you cut that music off so abruptly?! That music fills the theatre as the curtains close and house lights dim up.
BTW, has anyone noticed that the post on the chair that Arthur stands next to, looks uncannily like a phallus? And as he considers a man's vengeance for this betrayal, the shadow of the phallus plays across his cheek as clear as day. Then as he comes to the realization that "violence is not strength and compassion is not weakness" he moves out of the shadow and the penis is gone from his face. He resolves to be civilized -- not to love himself above all others. That phallus is a not too subtle, well placed symbol; I can't believe it is just accidental. Joshua Logan had to have done it on purpose.
Haha. I wish I could play this out till the end; I really do. But, the copy write thing stands in the way. That’s is all I could give. As for the phallus, swords were purposely made this way. Well for better control of the weapon. It was a sign of strength and peace. The sword handle will always represent the phallus.
What movie is ?
