+ 1 for the Windmaster. Truly love this stove. Used it in heavy wind to boil water and it always surprises me how fast it get’s the job done. Expensive but worth every penny.

Different systems for different conditions and trips make sense. The MSR Windburner is unbeatable in high wind conditions. I always add a three-legged cannister stand to prevent spillage, especially in wind-blown tusuky areas, and a wind screen that clips above the cannister for BRS type stoves, in some conditions. Heat exchangers, coffee presses, clip- on bowls, strainer lids, and insulative cozies are convenient, but don't always make weight sense.

I haven' t used any burner, that hadn't had the need for wind shield. If you are touring the mountains, or open valleys, it's an absolute. No matter the system. The Jetboil and copies, are meant to, and just works for boiling water. That's the whole idea and design. I just got a "Gravity" and will probably forever prefer that over everything else. Except when just going for a couple of hours hike, wanting to grab a coffee out in the woods. Then the Jetboil excels.

That’s totally correct about wind protection. I also use the Jetboil style during the shorter tours when I just want to grab a coffee or something.

After different setup's over the years as a solo adv rider, I think I found the best setup for me. It's you're second choice, the BRS and the toaks 750 ml cup. I completed the set with a wildo folding cup and a titanium folding spoon.
As a for motorcycle traveling it's not about weight but more about the volume you carry. And the taste of some of the freeze-dried meals😁

I have done extensive testing of numerous stoves and cook pots.
Without exception, I have found that pots with wide bottoms outperform otherwise identical pots with narrow bottoms. A tight-fitting, non-ventilated lid reduces boiling times as well. I sometimes put a rock on top of the pot lid to enhance the tightness of the fit.
Additionally, pots with concave bottoms are more prone to burning food than pots with flat bottoms. Oil put into the pot (as in when attempting to pop popcorn) will flow away from the center of the pot bottom and collect around the sides. Popcorn will burn in the center.

      That’s really good input! Thanks!
I planning to make a video about different kinds of pots and my experience is very similar to what you is writing about.

As a super light cooking system, I use the 750 ml Toaks as follows:
I rounded the ends of the legs of an orange 3-legged folding stand so that I can fit it upside down into the pot. Then I put my gas bottle upside down, so that its cap fits into the hole in the stand. The upside-down bottle shows its hollow base, which frees up some more space for the stove and a mini BIC lighter.
The Toaks pot and its lid fit into the bag and I put a dismantled metal filter (Bestargot) atop the lid, with a synthetic foam washer (which avoids rattling). This gives me an extra French Press-style coffee maker.
As a "normal" cooking pot, I confirme the Toaks 900 ml wide model is better, as it allows slow cooking.
Thank you for your informative videos 😊

I'm going for the BRS and small pot. I use with a aluminum foil wrapped around almost all the way as wind protection but also for keeping heat in. Works very good.

For me it depends on what kind of trip I'm doing.
If it's only going to be freeze dried food and coffee I go for the Windburner.
If I need to proper cook food I go for my Trangia system.
If it's something in between I go for the Pocket Rocket DLX.
Thanks for a nice video!!! =)

Thanks for review. I started with my fathers Trangia from early 60´s in the early 80´s, then a Primus kit with gas, now a Jetboil Zip since about 5 years. Love it. Fast, easy and light enough at 340 grams. Just for boiling water but thats what I need for coffe, freeze dried and soups etc. I just need one 100 g gas canister for a week.

A liquid fuel pump up the pressure stove is KING when the temperature is 15ºF or colder. Yes, I have the original model Whisperlite that first hit the market back in the mid to late 60's. Paid all of $35.00 for it. And it still works like new. Yes, I do know how to properly keep it clean, to disassemble the burner components & shine 'em up with steel wool, once a year.

I had just bought a primus "express spider 2" when I saw about the soto... I wanted the larger flame surface and adjustability, its 200 gram without pot so its heavier (but cheaper) than the Soto and the soto with its pressure control is great so I dont really know what to do now. I have mostly used mrs liquid gas stoves, the wisperlite and the dragonfly before and of course the traditional Trangia in different setups.

I have a Jetboil, pretty good. A good hiking rig. Fights the wind well. The Soto is trick from what I see. I don't have one yet but will. They are just getting started in USA. I also carry a BRS all the time. Compact affordable and great if something else fails. I also have my old standby, Svea Optimus. Never fails and takes very little fuel, has it's own pot. I like to be able to use an 8 inch frying pan. So I use a Coleman gas stove, solo unit Sportster or some other variants I have for many years. They do require pumping but run on any available fuel. Heavy though. Since I motorcycle camp a lot weight isn't a real big factor. When I hike I go light. Hot water meals and Coffee. BRS. Assorted Toaks for whatever the mix. Matti the top handle is called a "Bail" handle. Bailing water. Good vid. Informative.

Hej! I also use the 750ml titanium pot, but with the optimus burner. Not ideal in windy conditions but very small and lightweight. For more slow cooking and 'real' food I use a Trangia 27 sometimes with the gas burner and not the alcohol stove. I also have the Trangia Triangle that I use with the gas burner when going for lighter weight but a bigger pot for proper cooking and not just boiling. It is also good in windy conditions.

    Thanks for the review.
A good competitor to the Soto Windmaster is the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe.
Quite same features, very similar burner and also a built-in regulator, but slightly smaller package size than the Windmaster.
I use the Pocket Rocket Deluxe during summer tours, very happy with it.

I have & use the 4-Plex Soto Windmaster, carry the small 110 gram fuel canister inside a Toaks 750ml pot + I carry a smaller Toaks 450ml pot/cup. I've made my own Koozies for both pots/cups from Reflectix which keeps my coffee or foot HOT HOT right down to the last sporkful. The piezo igniter always works. Thanks to their excellent designed pressure regulator it provides the same flame/heat whether the canister is full or near empty. Soto was the first to add pressure regulators to their stoves, all others are copycat pressure regulators.
Matti, do yourself a favor, write to Soto & ask them for a spare set of rubber gaskets/O-rings for your Windmaster so that you have them on hand, if or when needed. I was not charged for 'em.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Agree, Soto Wind-master is the best. Recently I have paired it with a titanium heat exchanger pot. It’s from nature hike or another chinese brand I think. It works really well and is more efficient without a lot of extra weight. You just have to be careful how you place the pan on the stove, due to the heat exchanger, it needs to be well centred. I only use to boil water. Have you tried using the wind-master with the Primus pot? It would be a little bit the same I think. Like your videos, honest without the typical sales pitch.

  • @SurvikingNL

According to the primus, it will fit with the stove on the canister in the pot

  • @bonilsson3161

I have heard lots of good things about the "Soto" gasburner and I personaly like it for its larger flame surface and the great adjustability. What I would like to know is how much water can you boil with one big canister with the different burners? Thats not important for 3-4 days trips or if you backpack along a trail and can buy new canisters but if you are out on extended trips like 2- 3 weeks then it can be really valuable. It would be hard (tiresome) to test it and on a long trip you can also mostly use a woodfire for cooking and save on the gas. Would love to hear your opinion on that, my guess is that the primus with the heat exchanger maybe is the most efficient. The stoves would have to be equally windprotected of course. My choise would probably still be the Soto burner.

I used the Primus Lite system on one canoe trip and it was OK. I decided to sell it because the bottom of the nylon handle melted, poor design. I use an MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe and a Toaks Titanium pot. You can also cook with a frying pan too because it will simmer.

i like the small BRS stove, but the problem is that it is quite filmsy and you cannot really use heavy pot on it. also the flame is very concentrated to a point. so it is hard to cook evenly.
