    I absolutely love it and you have so many cute little touches that make it homey. I love how you've kept everything so original and vintage. I'm 67 so I think just personally for me I'd probably need something with a toilet and tiny shower combo. But as far as living in a small space that wouldn't bother me at all because it's very cozy and obviously you're doing outdoor things much of the time anyway. It seems like you have everything you need and made such great use of the space!

    Love your little trailer. We just sold our 1974 boler after owning it and loving it for 15 years. A trick we found to shower inside when it's either too cold outside or you're surrounded by too many neighbours was to use a foldable dog pool, and wash sitting down with a similar shower as yours. Hope it won't take too long for you to save up for your next adventure!

      The 16ft one is amazing! I saw one for sale in great condition right after I bought my 13ft one. The weight of the 16ft trailer would have been too much for me to tow with my 4 cylinder CR-V. They weigh a little over 1800 lbs, but they are the Holy Grail of campers for sure. Thank you so much for the kind words! This little camper found me. I was looking for a Scamp when this popped up and it was the first time I had ever seen one. A day later it was in my possession. I didn't know how special and unique it was at the time I bought it, I just knew U-Haul made good quality products. The right one will find you at the right time. 💛

      Thank you so much! If I didn't have this trailer, I was definitely looking for a van as an option. In 2019 you could buy a decent van to convert for $3500... Now it is ridiculous. Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope you get to live the life you've always dreamed of soon! The only reason I get to do it is because I jumped in head first and went for it. I have several plans in place, but I'm at the end of my self-funding and I have to build my reserves again before I can go any further. I'll probably take the leap again once I get my finances back in order. It's scary any time you make that leap. I could work while I travel, but I prefer to be fully engaged and not worried about a star link connection or an agenda. It makes these excursions like little glimpses of retirement. @@tennesseewanderer Thank you. That would be really helpful. Right now, I'm working my way through repairs and renovations. That's likely to take the winter and then next year I'll be practicing with shorter trips, planning to leave mid May 2025. One thing I learned from you that has been really helpful is that I can go with a safe but less than best camper but I cannot go without funding for the trip so I'm putting aside funds from each paycheque for the actual trip and then using what I can to do the work with the goal of having more than enough saved when I leave that I can thoroughly enjoy the trip. SUCH valuable learning.

    I tell my daughter about you all the time. She has a cat and I know someday she would like to travel. She would not go without her cat! I was going to suggest peppermint oil for the rodents. I am not sure if it is safe around cars though. I know they sell some sprays that they say are safe for pets. I know you have to reapply often but I do know it does work.

    • @tennesseewanderer
      @tennesseewanderer  Рік тому

      Aw! Your daughter sounds amazing! There are so many ways to travel with a cat. She'll have so much fun! I've tried cedar oil. I hesitate with the peppermint oil just because of the pets. It's almost like having a leak, once water finds a path through, you can't stop the leak. I know there's multiple ways to get in the car. I'm going to try ultrasonic with the little stone light next to try and keep them out. I have mouse friendly traps and don't set them up until I actually have evidence that they are getting in my car. I don't want to attract them in there. Thanks so much for all the kind words and suggestions!

      Don't ever lose hope! The right one will find you when the time is right! There are other campers with similar features that are a little more reasonably priced. The market is cyclical, so you just never know what's going to cross your path. I was looking for a Scamp and the U-Haul popped up on my search. I made a quick decision to buy even though it was $800 more than the Scamp I was also looking at. The camper found me. Yours will find you at the right time, too. Keep dreaming, sometimes dreams turn into reality. 💛 Hope to see you down the road!

    Thanks for the in depth update. I can see your kitty is a much loved and pampered companion. Does your dog sleep on your bed? Does he stay in the car with you when you travel and kitty in the camper? So, you could have a guest stay with you using the bottom bunk? It does look a little awkward to get inside the bunk in between the bar supports. It looks like the bunk supports were original to the camper, is that right? A small, flexible person like you could use the bottom bunk. I can understand wanting to keep the camper as original as possible, but have you thought you might install a new refrigerator at some point? Seems it would make things easier for you. Also, it seems your cooler would take up valuable space. I don't understand why the camper would come with a sink and a water tank if the manufacturer didn't expect it to be used. They must of considered freezing temperatures. I would think you would need the water in the sink for washing, dishes, cooking, etc. I like the screen area you have for the pets outside. Is there a camper restoration site that can help you with some of the camper repairs? I have seen people install roof canopies to give you protected space outside. Do you have an outside grill? I ask too many questions but enjoyed all the details you have given. Happy trails!

    • @tennesseewanderer
      @tennesseewanderer  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes, you could have a full grown adult on the bottom bunk if necessary. Those are the original posts. I have thought about a small refrigerator, but I don't want to get rid of the original icebox. I keep the cooler in my car, so it works for the moment. I'm sure the campers were intended for the sink to be used. I just prefer to not have it as a worry for leaks and it can also be wasteful. Every bit of water that you carry in is precious and using a sink can cause you to use more. There is also not a gray tank for the waste water. It just drains out of the camper under the sink. There's hacks for using less water because it is heavy and if you haul it in, you definitely don't want to waste a drop. I use spray bottles of vinegar and rubbing alcohol as well as a washtub for bigger messes. The sink is small and right next to my bedding, so I'd rather do my dishes outside than risk spilling water in my bed. There is a Facebook group that offers a lot of suggestions on repairs for U-Haul camper owners. I've also reached out to U-Haul for my upcoming repairs and they are working on scheduling a time to consult me. (That is above and beyond from U-Haul in my opinion. It was a shot in the dark and I really wasn't expecting a response). I brought an outdoor grill and a solar oven on my first trip and only used it a handful of times. I couldn't justify the space that they take up for only using them a few times.
      Hope that answers some questions for you! Let me know if I missed anything or what other questions you may have. Here's a link for how I manage the sink if you are interested:

    • @tennesseewanderer
      @tennesseewanderer  8 місяців тому

      Hi Morgan! So happy you have one of these fun little things! I actually just took the carpet out and used it to trace a soft piece of vinyl to take its place. I found an inexpensive vinyl that had padding on the bottom. That helped cover the bolts and more uneven parts of the floor. The padding keeps the unevenness less noticeable and looks okay esthetically. It's not a professional job by any means and I've seen more quality renos than what I did. Mine was just a quick, easy fix to get the carpet out and make it easier to clean while I traveled. My cost was $20 for the vinyl floor. Hope that helps! I wish I had more insight into leveling the floor. The one benefit to the vinyl cutout is that it is easy to remove for a deep clean and also if there is a leak of some sort. I have my front window leaking, so this makes it easy to allow the floor to dry properly until I can get the leak fixed and prevent more extensive damage.

      That's a great question! I usually don't camp in established campgrounds too often. I also have a Harvest Host membership where my camper is approved to stay at the available locations that Harvest Host offers. I also have been very lucky in finding room at mostly state and county campgrounds while traveling through places like California that have stricter requirements for the camper's age. I haven't had a problem with trying to find a campground... I'm sure there are some that are more strict, but they have not been part of my experience. I've had more trouble trying to book a campground with my pets than the age of the camper. Safe and happy travels to you! 💛
